SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night x Guarding Gaia
DESCRIPTION:Just Peace Movie Night: Guarding Gaia\nJoin us for a thought-provoking evening organised by Human Rights in The Picture\, Lawyers for Lawyers and The Hague Humanity Hub\, part of the Just Peace Movie Nights series. \n  \nOn 28 January\, we screen the documentary Guarding Gaia\, which exposes the risk that environmental lawyers face in their everyday work. They represent marginalised groups in cases involving oil exploitation\, deforestation\, wildlife trafficking\, mining and other environmental harms. By holding powerful economic actors to account\, they become targets themselves. The documentary explores their daily work\, often with limited resources and in isolation\, facing growing risks of physical attacks\, harassment and intimidation from state actors\, organised crime and other hostile groups. \n  \n🎬 About the Film – Guarding Gaia\nGuarding Gaia is a 30-minute documentary produced by Human Rights in the Picture. The film is a central component of a two-year campaign by Lawyers for Lawyers to support legal professionals at risk who work on the front lines of climate justice. Through this campaign\, Lawyers for Lawyers aims to raise awareness about the crucial role these lawyers play\, advocate for their safety\, and call for greater international support so they can continue their essential work. \n  \nThe movie screening will be followed by a moderated discussion in collaboration with Lawyers for Lawyers and Human Rights in the Picture. The confirmed speakers are: \n\nRitwick Dutta\, environmental lawyer from India\, founder of LIFE\nTara Fiechter\, Lawyers for Lawyers\nNadia Sánchez Castillo-Winckels\, Climate Legal Consulting\nSjoerd Lopik\, partner De Roos / research fellow Leiden University\n\n  \n	Get your ticket here! SUMMARY:Blue Drinks x Climate Justice Community
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us on January 29 for the first 2026 edition of Blue Drinks at The Hague Humanity Hub\nFor our first gathering of 2026\, the Climate Justice Community Drinks is teaming up with Blue Drinks at the Hub to bridge the gap between climate action and water justice. \nLast year\, many of us sat together to reflect on the hurdles we faced and the lessons we learned. Now\, we are shifting our focus forward. We want to hear about your aspirations\, your big plans\, and your hopes for the months ahead. \nWater is often missing within climate conversations and that is why this collaboration is so important. While it’s frequently buried in technical reports or sector-specific silos\, we know that water justice is a deeply social and political issue. It’s about access\, equality\, and resilience\, and it touches every single one of us regardless of our discipline. \nThe evening will be a relaxed space to connect\, hear from a few experts in the field\, share reflections on why water justice matters more than ever\, and trade goals for the coming year. Whether you’re a regular at the Hub or joining us for the first time\, come as you are and help us kick off the year with some collective momentum. \nBlue Drinks is an informal networking series bringing together professionals across the climate and environmental sectors to connect and collaborate. \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:AI and the Planet: Can Democracy Survive AI?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second event in our AI and the Planet series as we discuss AI’s influence on modern politics.\n  \nThe 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal exposed the vulnerability of our democratic processes in the digital age. As AI algorithms increasingly dictate the flow of information online\, fuelling outrage and division\, the capacity for AI to influence political discourse has grown on an unprecedented scale. With the introduction of generative AI and its capacity to produce hyper-realistic deepfakes and synthetic media\, this risk has only accelerated. \n  \nIn this event\, we discuss AI’s influence on modern politics with Claudia Chwalisz\, Founder and CEO of DemocracyNext\, and AI ethicist and action philosopher\, Nathan (Nate) Kinch FRSA. Join us as we explore whether we can use AI to enhance democratic principles rather than erode them. \n  \nAbout the series:\nAI and the Planet is a webinar series hosted by the RSA’s Oceania network and AI ethicist\, Nathan (Nate) Kinch FRSA\, and supported by the RSA Sustainability Network. Each event features a discussion with a leading scholar whose work deepens and expands our understanding of the current AI moment – the risks\, challenges and potential. Together\, we will explore the rapidly evolving relationship between Artificial Intelligence and the world it is reshaping. \n  \nFor questions about this series\, please contact RSA Global Manager (Oceania and Asia)\, Philipa Duthie on philipa.duthie@thersa.org. \n  \n	Register here! SUMMARY:The Politics of Dry Feet: The political economy of flood risk management in Indonesia
DESCRIPTION:Floods represent one of the most persistent and damaging disasters in Indonesia\, a nation highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. \nDespite significant investments in flood management infrastructure\, several Indonesian cities continue to grapple with flooding issues\, while others have effectively reduced their risks. In Politics of Dry Feet\, Dr Yogi Permana explores the reasons behind these disparities. \nBased on extensive field research\, Permana argues that local political economies – not merely technical capabilities – are key to understanding divergent outcomes. By examining four cities\, he shows how collusion between political and business interests undermines spatial planning\, flood defence and emergency response\, while alliances between reform-minded leaders and civil society foster more resilient outcomes. \nBridging anthropology\, political science and urban political ecology\, Permana offers a political economy perspective on flood risk management that is relevant to scholars\, practitioners and policymakers alike\, both within and beyond Indonesia. \nThe talk will be followed by a ‘reflection’ by Professor Lisa SchipperOpens external (University of Bonn\, Germany) who will broaden out the discussion around Disaster Risk Reduction\, and the everyday politics of vulnerability. \n	Register here

SUMMARY:Community Drinks: Peace & Justice Beyond the Bubble
DESCRIPTION:What if your next game-changing connection is just a drink away?\nJoin us for Community Drinks to wind down around a glass\, make new connections\, and get inspired by the spotlights of the evening. Hosted at The Hague Humanity Hub\, this is the place for you to get away from your busy schedule and enjoy after-hours with purposeful conversations. \n  \nWhat can you expect?\nCome to the Hub on Tuesday\, February 17th\, between 17:00 and 19:00\, for a drink (or two) and meet professionals working on making peace and justice more accessible for everyone. \n  \nThe Hague is both the International City of Peace & Justice and a city where neighbourhoods can be socio-economically and culturally divided. While hundreds of institutions work on peace\, justice\, human rights\, and security\, the field can often feel closed-off\, technical\, elite\, or geographically distant from the lived realities of many residents. \nThis edition of Community Drinks takes place right before the municipal elections\, making it a timely moment to reflect on who feels included in the city’s peace and justice ecosystem\, and who does not. \nWho are the speakers?\n\nNetwerk Haagse Helpers\n\nThe Haagse Helpers is a community of volunteers who are building a socially connected city. Young people help fellow citizens\, inspire each other\, and flourish themselves. The Haagse Helpers pay attention to raising awareness among young people to contribute in and to the city. In addition to doing volunteer work\, we have fixed monthly activities\, and we also offer workshops and training to volunteers to strengthen the community’s feelings even more. \n\nLeiden University\n\nLeiden University’s Campus The Hague is the home to teaching and research focused on international law\, governance\, urban issues\, global affairs\, and health—the series brings together academics\, students\, practitioners\, and citizens to explore inclusive approaches to building peaceful societies. Leiden University will be represented by Maja Vodopivec\, Senior University Lecturer at Leiden University College. Drawing on her background in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina\, her PhD research in Tokyo\, and her teaching in peace and conflict studies\, Maja co-founded Fireside Peace Chats to counter increasing securitization in academic discourse and reconnect discussions of peace with lived realities in the world’s capital of peace and justice. \nWho is it for?\nIf you are interested in connecting with people and their work towards a more peaceful\, just and sustainable world\, this event is for you. Whatever your role or sector\, join Community Drinks to relax\, exchange perspectives\, and connect with this vibrant community committed to making the world more peaceful\, just and sustainable\, one conversation at a time. \nMore information about the speakers to be shared shortly. \n	Register here! SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night x GHRD: SOLD. A Child Trafficked
DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout SOLD\nSOLD. A Child Trafficked\, a powerful 2012 film that sheds light on the realities of child trafficking and exploitation. \nShot mainly in Nepal\, it follows the stories of several survivors of child trafficking who fell victim to sexual slavery in brothels across India. SUMMARY:Why International Law is Failing as a Discipline: Geopolitics\, Legality and the Crisis of Cartographic Vision
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a keynote lecture by Prof. Nikolas Rajkovic (Tilburg University)\, exploring how our traditional way of seeing the world through maps is being strained by an increasingly complex reality of infrastructures and systems\, leaving international law in a ‘perceptual lag’. \nThe territorial trap \nFor decades\, territorial maps promised order. But this ‘cartographic imagination’ is breaking. Prof. Rajkovic warns that international legal discipline is stuck in an outdated mindset that ignores modern reality. \nToday\, the things that truly control our lives do not respect lines on a map. Power is increasingly projected through pixels rather than polygons\, found in:\nData infrastructure and undersea fibre-optic cables.\nSatellite arrays that monitor and manage global movement.\nSanctions systems and supply chains that bypass national borders. \nInvisible governance\nThe main problem is not that international law is disappearing\, but that it is failing to ‘recalibrate’. As governance migrates into technical systems and mobile ‘things’\, it becomes invisible to traditional legal eyes. When lawyers try to solve modern problems\, they often default to old-fashioned ‘map thinking’ instead of confronting how much the world has changed. \nTo restore relevance to international law\, Prof. Rajkovic calls for a new kind of ‘visual literacy’. He will argue that we must stop looking at the world as a static map and start paying attention to the digital and physical infrastructures that now function as boundaries. Without this shift in perspective\, international law may well continue to lose its grip on a reconfigured geopolitical world. \nThis keynote lecture concludes the ‘International Legal Resonance in the Global Attention Economy’ workshop\, which was funded by the KNAW Early Career Partnerships programme from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. \n  \nSpeaker\nProf. dr. Nikolas M. Rajkovic\nChair of International Law\, Tilburg University \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Youth Speak Night
DESCRIPTION:Youth Speak Night (YSN) is an interactive\, dialogue-driven event organized by AIESEC Leiden/The Hague under the NOUR Project. It brings together students\, professionals\, and experts for an evening focused on meaningful exchange and cross-cultural understanding. \nThis edition of YSN centres on the theme “Connecting Cultures\,” aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals. The evening explores how global cooperation— particularly between the Arab and Western worlds— can be strengthened through dialogue\, knowledge exchange\, and youth engagement. \nYSN brings together professionals\, academics\, and NOUR Project representatives\, ensuring a balanced perspective that combines practical experience\, academic insight\, and on-the-ground youth engagement. Attendees can expect interactive elements\, real-life perspectives\, and the opportunity to ask questions directly to the speakers. Rather than being a one-sided lecture\, YSN is designed as a space for conversation. \nBy the end of the evening\, attendees should walk away with a deeper understanding of how equal\, cross-cultural partnerships are essential for global progress\, how young people can actively contribute to these collaborations\, and how initiatives like the NOUR Project translate dialogue into concrete action. Ultimately\, YSN is a platform where youth are not just listeners but active participants in shaping a more connected world. \n  \nThe Agenda \nThe programme will include an opening\, a keynote that bridges theory and practice\, and a 45 minute moderated panel discussion with professionals. The panel includes academics who will provide broader insights into Arab-Western relations\, professionals working towards intercultural understanding in The Hague\, and NGO representatives who strive for intercultural connection on multiple societal levels. \n	Sign up here! SUMMARY:Fireside Peace Chats: Youth & Peace with Jonathan van Varik
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn this next edition of FPC\, we will discuss the unique perspective and position that youth can and should play in advancing peace from the local to the global level. Our guest speaker for this FPC edition is Jonathan van Varik\, youth worker\, freelance peace-builder\, and the lead coordinator of the 2026 Youth Peace Summit! With Jonathan\, we will discuss how we can  connect youth\, institutions\, organizations\, and governments in dialogue\, innovation\, and inclusion to empower young people worldwide to become active creators of peace. Within that context\, we will explore the contribution of the Youth Peace Summit\, its 2025 Youth Peace Manifesto\, and the summit’s innovative infrastructure for connecting youth peace-builders year-round\, which will be launched at the upcoming 2026 summit! Join us for an informal conversation intended to bring peacebuilders\, enthusiasts\, and citizens together to connect\, share experiences\, and exchange insights on how we can promote resilience within our local communities. \n  \nWhat are the Fireside Peace Chats?\nThe Fireside Peace Chats aim to create a space where practice\, research\, and policy in the field of peacebuilding come together in an informal way through the experiences of people on the ground. By sharing personal stories from peacebuilders and other figures with extensive experience in conflict areas\, we want to contribute to a locally informed paradigm shift in liberal peacebuilding. \nThe Fireside Peace Chats originally emerged as a joint initiative of Leiden University College (LUC)\, the Knowledge Platform for Security and the Rule of Law (KPSRL)\, and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH). SUMMARY:The Hague Local Election Night
DESCRIPTION:  \nMaking local democracy accessible to all residents of The Hague. Learn who can vote\, what’s at stake\, and ask the parties directly.\nMany residents of The Hague are unsure whether they can vote in municipal elections\, what the city council is responsible for\, or how local politics affects everyday life. This Election Night is designed to make local democracy clearer\, more accessible\, and easier to engage with\, especially for people who may feel unsure about where to start. \nThe evening offers a clear and practical introduction to how local democracy works in The Hague\, with a focus on accessibility for internationals and residents who do not speak Dutch fluently. Held in English\, the event welcomes anyone who wants to better understand local decision making\, regardless of background or previous knowledge. You will learn who is eligible to vote\, how voting works in practice\, and what the municipality actually decides on\, from housing and mobility to public space and local services. \nAlmost all major political parties will take part in the event. They will present their core priorities and engage directly with the audience during a debated-style moderated live Q&A\, giving you the opportunity to ask questions and hear different perspectives in one place. The evening concludes with informal drinks\, creating space for personal conversations and further discussion. \nThis event is intended for anyone who wants to feel more informed\, confident\, and included in local democratic processes in The Hague\, whether you are voting for the first time or simply want a clearer understanding of how the city is run. \n	RSVP here

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch – How Can Data Science Strengthen Your Programming?
DESCRIPTION:Seva Foundation invites you\, as a fellow hub member\, to a brown-bag lunch. It will be an informal gathering to get to know each other and explore how data science can help strengthen programs\, improve decision-making\, and increase impact. Because many organizations collect large amounts of data\, yet turning that data into meaningful insights for programming remains a challenge. This session offers a space to exchange experiences\, reflect together\, and discuss practical ways in which data science can support stronger and more effective programs. \nSeva’s Executive Director\, Kate Moynihan will host the session\, and she will be joined by Claudio Privitera\, Seva board member and leading neuroscientist and biomedical engineer at the School of Optometry of the University of California at Berkeley.  His background in statistics\, quantitative analysis\, and engineering brings a strong data-driven perspective to strategic discussions\, particularly where technology and innovation intersect with real-world impact. \nThis will be an interactive and informal exchange rather than a formal presentation. Participants are encouraged to bring their own experiences\, questions\, and examples. Seats are limited\, so early registration is recommended. Seva will provide coffee and tea\, and participants are invited to bring their own lunch. \nSeats are limited\, and you can register bij sending an email to Rick ten Holder: rtenholder@seva.org \n
