SUMMARY:Refugees of Development’ and ‘Sacrifice Zones’: Humanitarian crisis in the Amazon\, capitalist expansion and state intervention
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Callum Blacoe on Unsplash \nIn this Humanitarian Governance webinar\, Professor Marcel Hazeu (Federal University of Para\, Brazil) for a discussion on various humanitarian crises unfolding in the Brazilian Amazon. \nSantiago del Hierro Kennedy (PhD Researcher\, ETH Zurich)will follow the presentation with a reflection on how development initiatives interact with resource extraction\, widescale agriculture and encroachment on Indigenous territory in the Northern Andean Amazon. \nThe Amazon is central to international debates on climate change\, framed both as a vital carbon sink (‘lungs of the world’) and a contested space for green capitalism. Global and local policies have turned the region into a site of financial speculation\, greenwashing and geopolitical negotiation. \nHowever\, these discourses often obscure the severe humanitarian crises unfolding in the region\, where environmental degradation intersects with systemic violence and displacement. It is a zone of ‘necropolitics’\, environmental racism and sacrifice zones. Yet it is also a space of resistance. \nWithin this presentation\, Professor Hazeu will consider cases including: \n\nThe Indigenous Refugee Crisis and Displacement of Venezuelan Indigenous migrants (Warao)\nForced displacement and sacrifice of local communities due to large-scale economic projects including the industrial harbour-mining complex in Barcarena\nThe Yanomami Genocide  and state neglect and violence against Indigenous peoples\nCarbon markets and the loss of livelihood security for traditional communities\nDeforestation\, Fire\, Drought and Ecological collapse that threatens the socio-ecosystem.\n\nThese crises reveal patterns of omission\, neglect and denial by local and international actors\, contrasted with grassroots resistance. \n	Register Here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Migration and Local Authorities Course
DESCRIPTION:Worldwide more than 100 million people have been forced to leave their homes due to conflicts\, violence\, fear of persecution and human rights violations. There has been a remarkable increase in the number of people that have been displaced since 2012 with no sign of this trend reversing.  Among them\, there are 53 million people internally displaced\, 27 million refugees and almost 5 million asylum seekers. Local governments often find themselves at the forefront of the global response to human displacement and need to take measures before national governments develop and adopt response strategies and policies.  \n\n\n\nThis course explores how local authorities can develop innovative solutions to the complex challenges of displaced populations. We will discuss how different levels of government interact and specifically what role local governments and local institutions can play in dealing with forced migration. We will examine how they can provide housing and health care for migrants and refugees while maintaining the level of services for the host community. Furthermore\, we will discuss social cohesion between migrants and host communities\, especially in communities with a significant presence of migrants. The course will also focus on ways to secure the economic inclusion of refugees and migrants in the local context.   \n\n\n\nKey Information \n\n\n\nThe course is aimed at professionals working on local policies for refugees and migrants. Participants work for national\, regional and local government\, NGOs\, donor and development organisations\, and research institutes.  \n\n\n\nThe scheduling of the training will be established at a later time. \n\n\n\nThe course fee is € 3\,895*. This includes all training related costs as well as drinks and warm lunches during the training days. Group discounts are available if you participate with three or more colleagues. \n\n\n\nThis training takes place in The Hague\, Netherlands. \n\n\n\nAfter this course\, you will receive a professional certificate of completion from The Hague Academy for Local Governance. \n\n\n\n*Professionals working in local government or for local NGOs on the DAC list of ODA-recipient countries (OECD) may qualify for a reduced course fee. Contact us for details. \n\n\n\nLearning objectives\n\n\n\nThis course will help you: \n\n\n\nDescribe the roles and responsibilities of local authorities in managing large movements of refugees and migrants; \n\n\n\nDiscuss the linkages between local migration challenges\, the national context\, and global trends as well as legal and institutional frameworks; \n\n\n\nRecognise the importance of investing in social cohesion in all aspects of the local response to migration and displacement; \n\n\n\nDescribe different approaches to support local authorities in planning for migration and displacement; \n\n\n\nDevelop approaches to strengthen service delivery in an inclusive manner. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Find out more here This link opens in a new tab

A limited number of seats have been opened up for the public—register soon to secure your spot! \nWe are thrilled to welcome Mette Gonggrijp\, former Dutch Ambassador\, leadership coach\, and founder of IMind2Lead\, to share her personal and professional journey. \nWhether you’re a student\, a young professional\, or considering a career shift\, this is your opportunity to: \n\nHear Mette’s inspiring story of diplomacy\, resilience\, and reinvention\nExplore careers in international relations\, leadership\, mental health\, and social entrepreneurship\nAsk your burning questions in an open Q&A\nConnect with like-minded peers and professionals\n\n“My journey has taught me that as leaders we can achieve more meaningful impact in the world by staying whole\, open and healthy” – Mette Gonggrijp \nIntroducing Mette\nMette Gonggrijp has been a Dutch diplomat and ambassador for over two decades. She served at the Dutch Embassies in Zimbabwe and Costa Rica (including Honduras\, El Salvador\, Guatemala and Nicaragua). She has been posted at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague as Director Sub-Sahara Africa and Ambassador Women’s Rights and Gender Equality. \nHer grandfathers’ resistance activities during WOII and his subsequent experiences as Prisoner of War have motivated Mette throughout her educational and professional career. She chose to focus her Master European Public Administration on international relations and international law. Internships at the Stockholm Peace Research Institute\, Asser Institute for International Law and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) led her to apply for the diplomatic training course in 1998. \nHer commitment to human rights and human dignity for all inspired her to consistently seek positions at Dutch MFA in the field of governance\, human rights\, social justice and international cooperation. When Mette resigned from MFA in 2022\, she had been working zealously in leadership positions for over 10 years. Known for being a ‘modern leader’ within the diplomatic service\, her leadership style had been characterised by a drive to foster thriving teams that realise true differences for others in the world. \nMette’s resignation from MFA followed the manifestation of unacknowledged complex (intergenerational) trauma. Drawing from her personal healing journey and her diplomatic career\, she founded the social enterprise IMind2Lead in 2022. Her recent education in coaching\, trauma\, mental health and well-being at Standford and NICABM have deepened her understanding and commitment. Mette’s belief is that the current uncertain\, polarised and complex world needs a different kind of leadership. Leadership that is being practised from a healthy\, open and conscious mind/body/heart congruence. With IMind2Lead through coaching and community she has been passionately guiding ngo\, public\, diplomatic and corporate mission-driven leaders towards ‘whole leadership’ for change. \nWhat is The Handshake?\nA career inspiration series spotlighting leading voices in peace the justice ecosystem. Through honest conversations and personal stories\, The Handshake offers an inside look at real career journeys\, beyond titles and job descriptions. \nParticipants can engage directly\, asking their pressing questions about career journeys\, field developments\, and the key skills needed for future professionals. For those who find the peace and justice sector daunting or do not know where to begin\, these conversations provide practical insights and help set realistic expectations for entering the field. \nRead about previous editions of The Handshake here \n	Register Here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Democracies under attack: the anti-rights movement and their tactics to influence the public narrative
DESCRIPTION:As part of a series of Brown Bag Sessions on the anti-rights movement\, we present our second Brown Bag Session of 2025\, a short online\, informal learning session. In this brown-bag session\, we will take a deep dive into the global anti-rights movement coordinated attacks against democracy and civic space.  Joined by RNW Media\, CIVICUS\, the University of Gothenburg and the Love Alliance\, we will present why the anti-rights movement is a threat to our democracies\, and give examples of what misinformation and disinformation tactics anti-rights groups are using. We invite you to bring your own lunch and engage! \nAnti-rights groups & dis/misinformation tactics\nCivil society worldwide is under growing pressure from the rising anti-rights movement\, with more outspoken and direct attacks on civic rights\, freedom of expression\, and on democratic values. Actors linked to anti-rights groups are trying to interfere in democratic processes\, and attacking civic freedoms. \nAnti-rights groups continue to win ground by using tactics such as disinformation (spreading deliberately deceiving or misleading information) & intimidation including aggressive litigation to drain resources of civil society organisations\, exploit public funds and influence institutions like the UN and EU to advance regressive agendas. Their tactics\, ranging from spreading false and misleading information to strategic lobbying\, have the potential to polarise public opinion\, erode trust in democratic processes\, and promote extremism. \nWhat to expect?\nIn this brown bag session\, representatives Giovana Fleck (RNW Media)\, Ines Pousadela (CIVICUS) and Post doctoral researcher Haley McEwen (University of Gothenburg) will be interviewed by Aidsfonds on how the anti-rights movement poses a threat to our civic space and democracies. We will explore: \n\nProvide insight into how misinformation and disinformation influence public narratives and are instrumentalised by certain groups.\nWhy it is important to understand the tactics of the anti-rights groups\nHow the anti-rights offense is going beyond attacks on the LGBTIQ+ and women’s rights.\n\nAbout the Partos LNOB Brown Bag sessions\nThis Brown Bag lunch session is the sixth of a series organised by the Partos Leave No One Behind Community of Practice (LNOB) with inspiring presentations on intersectionality and Leave No One Behind in practice. Digest fresh from the shelf\, or yet to be tested\, best practices\, tools\, and approaches that aim to put rights holders in the driving seat and reduce discrimination. \nMissed the first session on the anti-rights movement? Find the summary here. \n	Register Here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:The Global Public Interest Lawyering Program: International Law in Practice
DESCRIPTION:The GPIL International Law in Practice Intensive Program (“GPIL Summer Intensive Program”) provides a hybrid (i.e.\, both in-person and remote) experiential learning opportunity designed to advance practical understanding of public interest lawyering in public international law. In 2025\, the GPIL Summer Intensive Program will be offered from 28 July to 02 August in The Hague (Netherlands)\, known as the “City of Peace and Justice” as it features a range of core institutions in public international law from the International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court to international organizations such as the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. The Hague is also one of the greatest sites of diplomatic exchange in the world and hosts a strong diplomatic presence from a range of States globally. The GPIL Summer Intensive Program will be held at the Hague Humanity Hub\, a center for collaboration and exchange among international civil society organizations active in The Hague. \nOver the course of this condensed week of learning\, participants will have the opportunity to gain a practical foundation in public international law by attending a series of lectures by leading practitioners and legal academics as well as by putting their new-found insights and skills to the test in an international legal advocacy exercise. Although subject to availability and not guaranteed\, The Global Pro Bono Bar Association is also working to facilitate (1) tours of the Peace Palace (site of the International Court of Justice and Permanent Court of Arbitration) as well as of the International Criminal Court for in-person participants; and (2) a virtual tour of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (“OPCW”) for remote participants. \nThe tentative schedule for the GPIL Summer Intensive Program is available at Annex I in this packet and information on how to apply is available at Annex V. As the 2025 GPIL Summer Intensive Program will be the inaugural in-person offering of this program\, The Global Pro Bono Bar Association is conducting the 2025 GPIL Summer Intensive Program with no program fee for both in-person and remote participants. Participants should understand that these early iterations of the GPIL Program remain a work-in-progress and incomplete or imperfect in some ways. Participants should expect technical and other issues to arise and approach participation in the 2025 GPIL Summer Intensive Program with a good measure of patience and humor as the bugs are worked out. Please direct any inquiries on this program to Adina Darbyshire at pgmcoord1@probonobar.org. \nDownload the full programme here \n	REGISTER This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Humanitarian Reset: Who's Being Left Behind
DESCRIPTION:As the internationally dominated humanitarian system undertakes soul searching amid a collapse in funding and escalating crises\, USAID has now officially joined DfID\, AusAID and other agencies in the rearview mirror of aid history. Traditional humanitarian donors are making cuts across the board\, with estimates of a 40–50% decrease from the peak of funding in 2023. \nIn response\, the ‘humanitarian reset’ has garnered widespread attention\, seeking to direct the system reform agenda. It has attracted extensive critiques\, particularly owing to major decisions being made behind closed doors\, with voices from the so-called Global North dominant. \nThe perspectives of crisis-affected communities have been thoughtfully amplified and it has been made clear that the ‘humanitarian reset’ must not fail local actors\, but what about the people and local actors at the heart of humanitarian response? \nHow are Global South humanitarians responding to the funding crunch? What changes do they want to see? How can we ensure their influence in reimagining the humanitarian system? \nJoin us for an online-only webinar as we hear from Global South humanitarians on how to realise a better humanitarian system. \n	Register Here\n \nInterpretation will be available in Spanish and Arabic. \nThis event will be delivered in collaboration with the Humanitarian System Transformation through Local Humanitarian Leadership (HST-LHL) programme\, of which HPG is a part with Oxfam and other partners\, generously funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

SUMMARY:Terrorism\, counter-terrorism and the rule of law
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Tima Miroshnichenko on Pexels\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom Monday 25 to Friday 29 August 2025\, the T.M.C. Asser Instituut and the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) will host the 15th-anniversary edition of the Advanced summer programme on terrorism\, counter-terrorism and the rule of law. During inspiring and interactive classes taught by leading practitioners and academics in the field\, you will gain deep insight into the current and emerging threats as well as international and domestic legal aspects of countering terrorism and violent extremism. \n\n\n\nOverview \n\n\n\nAs we navigate an increasingly complex and unstable global environment\, the threat of terrorism and (violent) extremism remains a persistent challenge. The Islamic State (IS) and its affiliated groups remained the deadliest terrorist organisation globally in 2023 (Global Terrorism Index 2024). Sub-Saharan Africa is the region most impacted by terrorism followed by the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) (Global Terrorism Index 2024). In parallel\, right-wing extremism continues to grow in influence worldwide. \n\n\n\nThe rise of new technologies has led more and more terrorists and (violent) extremists to use digital technologies\, cyberspace and artificial intelligence (AI) to further their aims. The internet today plays a pivotal role in radicalisation\, extremism\, and terrorism as a means of recruitment and spreading ideology. The convergence of social media\, gaming platforms\, and virtual reality also raises concerns about how (young) people are targeted and radicalised in digital spaces. \n\n\n\nAcross the world\, terrorist and violent extremist activities have continuously triggered an increase in security laws and measures. To prevent terrorism and violent extremism as early as possible\, states have grappled with defining terrorism and proscribing terrorist and extremist organisations\, introduced early prevention mechanisms\, and expanded domestic and international legal and policy toolkits to counter the ever-developing threat posed by terrorism and violent extremism. Are these measures lawful\, legitimate\, and proportionate to their impact on the rule of law and human rights? What are the future threats and how can they be countered while respecting the rule of law and human rights? \n\n\n\nAbout the programme \n\n\n\nThe 15th-anniversary edition of our renowned summer programme will bring you inspiring and thought-provoking lectures by leading experts in the field\, interactive sessions\, in-person study visits to Europol and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons\, group discussions (under the Chatham House Rule)\, and panel presentations. The opening keynote will be delivered by Prof. Ben Saul\, the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism. You will also have the unique opportunity to network with fellow professionals in the field: based here in The Hague and further a field. \n\n\n\nThe following sessions have been confirmed as part of the programme: \n\n\n\n\nOpening keynote: Definitional debates and current challenges\n\n\n\nPathways to extremism and terrorism\n\n\n\nEU regulation of online spaces\n\n\n\nOnline radicalisation\n\n\n\nConflict zones or terrorism ‘hot spots’: the evolution of (violent) extremist actors and geographies\n\n\n\n\nThe list of confirmed sessions will be updated regularly as more speakers and topics are finalised\, so be sure to check back for the latest updates! \n\n\n\nAlumni have said about previous editions of the summer programme: \n\n\n\n“The course challenges the way you think and exposes you to countries and professionals that have different perspectives on the same issues and threats I deal with.” (2024 edition) \n\n\n\n“A very good choice to acquire background knowledge on the political and legal framework of terrorism\, violent extremism and counter-terrorism in the EU/international contexts. Also relevant for tech professionals working in the sector of trust and safety and policy – if you’re looking for crisp thinking\, the most updated findings\, and research in the area of online terrorism and violent extremism.” (2023 edition) \n\n\n\n“Very inspiring\, great networking opportunity and a lot of food for thought. SUMMARY:Integrity and Anti-Corruption
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Markus Spiske on Unsplash \nIntroduction\nCorruption is a fundamental cause of poverty\, conflict\, and state fragility. It undermines a state’s ability to effectively deliver public services\, uphold the rule of law\, and foster a conducive business environment. Furthermore\, corruption presents a significant obstacle to sustainable economic and social development. Research has consistently demonstrated that marginalised communities are disproportionately affected by its consequences. \nThe course examines the underlying factors driving corruption and their impact on development. Participants will explore strategies to address these root causes and gain insights into international initiatives\, legislation\, and agreements aimed at combatting corruption. The course presents examples of integrity policies that prevent corrupt practices by fostering a culture of ethics within public institutions\, and ensuring that governments operate in the best interest of their citizens. Additionally\, various policy instruments\, including codes of conduct and whistleblower protection regulations\, will be discussed. \nThe programme includes a workshop on integrity dilemmas\, in which participants share experiences\, challenges\, and practical insights from their professional environment. By engaging with fellow professionals from diverse backgrounds\, participants will broaden their perspective on integrity and anti-corruption efforts worldwide. \nKey Information\nThis course is aimed at professionals involved in anti-corruption\, transparency and accountability processes concerning development and governance. Participants come from national\, regional and local government\, knowledge institutes\, NGOs and donor and development organisations. \nThe course fee is € 3\,895*. This includes all training related costs as well as drinks and warm lunches during the training days. Group discounts are available if you participate with three or more colleagues. \nAfter this course\, you will receive a professional certificate of completion from The Hague Academy for Local Governance. \n*Professionals working in local government or for local NGOs on the DAC list of ODA-recipient countries (OECD) may qualify for a reduced course fee. Contact us for details. \nLearning objectives\nThe Integrity & Anti-corruption course will help you: \n\nDefine key concepts and international frameworks for the promotion of integrity and prevention of corruption;\nExplore the widespread nature of corruption and its effects on social and economic development\, as well as the rule of law;\nIdentify and practice with methodologies for corruption analysis;\nUnderstand integrity systems in organisations\, and the tools needed to design them;\nRecognise and respond to ethical dilemmas in their work;\nReview integrity and anti-corruption policies from their local context\, and identify actionable steps to address gaps and drive positive change.\n\nExperience\nParticipants will engage with leading practitioners and experts in the field of integrity and anti-corruption\, gaining insights into global trends\, best practices\, and challenges. They will analyse real-life cases\, learning how different policies and interventions have been applied in various contexts. \nInteractive exercises help participants develop practical skills for handling integrity-related challenges in their own work environments. In a dilemma-workshop\, participants will discuss ethical dilemmas from real-life cases and explore decision-making scenarios. Through role-plays and simulations\, they learn how to deal with the complexities of enforcing integrity policies and corruption risks in a controlled setting. \nStudy visits to the city of Rotterdam and the Ministry of Defense show how public authorities in The Netherlands develop integrity policies and work towards a culture of integrity in their organisations. Participants will also experience transparency of government data during an open data tour in the city of Utrecht. Furthermore\, the Public Prosecutor for Anti-corruption of The Netherlands shares experiences with the enforcement of anti-corruption policies. \n	Register Here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Book Presentation MCLD – We Power Our Own Change: Community-Led Development in Practice
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a timely conversation on the future of development—rooted in community leadership and local knowledge. To celebrate the launch of their new book\, We Power Our Own Change\, Gunjan Veda and other co-editors will lead a discussion on how community-driven development is challenging dominant\, top-down narratives in global development and why it is the way forward. \nAbout the session\nWhat is Community-led Development\, how does it work and why is community-driven impact the way forward for the future of our sector? \nPartos invites the Movement for Community-Led Development (MCLD) to present their recent book: Community-led Development in Practice: We Power our Own Change.  Drawing on insights from 30 international contributors from a range of organizations\, the book centers non-Western\, locally-led solutions that hold powerful lessons for development practitioners\, funders\, students and academics. It focuses on the “how to” of community led development. \nAs Official Development Assistance (ODA) continues to decline\, it is more urgent than ever to foster self-sustaining local development ecosystems that reflect the priorities and lived experiences of communities themselves. This event situates the book within these “post-ODA” conversations—highlighting why the future of development is community-led. \nThe editors\, Gunjan Veda and Elene Cloete will be joined by chapter contributors from around the world\, who will share practical strategies from their work on operationalising community-led development as showcased in the book. \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:[Webinar] Fifteen years of review: The Office of the Ombudsperson to the UN Security Council ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee
DESCRIPTION:Since the establishment of the Taliban and Al-Qaida sanctions regime (“1267”) by the United Nations Security Council in 1999\, which evolved into the ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee\, over 600 individuals and entities have been subjected to travel bans\, asset freezes and arms embargoes. Although playing an integral role in the fight against terrorism\, such sanctions can fundamentally impact the human rights of those targeted and can also have a collective impact. The establishment of the Office of the Ombudsperson to the ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee was therefore a significant step forward in ensuring due process for petitioners through an independent and impartial review of delisting requests. Fifteen years on\, the Office continues to provide a critical mechanism for due process within the 1267 sanctions regime; nevertheless\, improvements to the delisting process continue to be called for. Join us on 9 September for a webinar with a panel of experts – including the current Ombudsperson\, former Chief Justice of Malaysia\, Mr Richard Malanjum – to critically reflect on counter-terrorism sanctions\, delisting processes\, and human rights law. \nThe creation of the Office of the Ombudsperson allowed\, for the first time\, those designated under the UNSC ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida sanctions regime to challenge their listings before an independent and impartial expert. The Ombudsperson recommends to the 1267 Committee to retain or delist petitioners. In total\, 106 cases have been completed through the Ombudsperson process\, with 73 delisting requests granted – resulting in the delisting of 68 individuals and 28 entities. \nThis webinar\, organised in cooperation with the Office of the Ombudsperson\, will\, among others\, assess the 15 years of the mandate and critically reflect on the difficulties of ensuring human rights protections within the context of countering terrorism. To do so\, the current Ombudsperson\, Mr. Richard Malanjum\, will be joined by a panel of experts\, including lawyers\, practitioners\, and academic experts. SUMMARY:[Panel discussion] Business and human rights in times of Russia’s war against Ukraine: Rethinking corporate accountability
DESCRIPTION:More than three years have passed since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine\, and it has been ten years since the annexation of Crimea. To date\, Russia’s capacity to sustain the armed conflict is largely maintained through the exporting of fossil fuels and international trade. \nHence\, Russia’s invasion also created unprecedented scrutiny on the roles and responsibilities of businesses in the conflict. This is the backdrop for a panel discussion critically exploring how the Russian war on Ukraine has transformed the business and human rights landscape\, which is co-organised by the Asser Institute and the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence on Corporate Sustainability and Human Rights of Wageningen University. \nThe discussion will focus on how wartime circumstances have influenced corporate human rights practices and what ‘responsible business conduct” means during (and after) Russia’s invasion. Thus\, we will touch upon the issue of corporate complicity of companies operating in or with ties to Russia. Should businesses that continue operations or maintain supply chains in Russia be seen as indirectly sponsoring war? Conversely\, what are the risks and responsibilities of exit or disengagement? \nAs Ukraine will hopefully move toward eventual recovery\, there is also a need to envisage the role of businesses in this process\, as the private sector is expected to play a key role in post-war reconstruction. This involvement will need to be grounded in international human rights standards\, conflict-sensitive practices\, and forward-looking policies\, which are set to shape Ukraine’s long-term development path. Moreover\, questions will also be raised on the role of businesses from a transitional justice mechanisms point of view\, including with regard to accountability\, reparations\, etc. \nThe event will explore 3 key themes\, including:  \n\nThe application of the UNGPs\, heightened due diligence\, and responsible business conduct in conflict settings\nLegal and moral questions of corporate complicity and the risks of maintaining or exiting operations in a complex environment (aggressor state)\nThe role of businesses in transitional justice and post-war reconstruction\, and integrating business and human rights into Ukraine’s recovery\n\nBy drawing on both academic insights and real-world experiences\, the event seeks to identify challenges\, best practices\, and normative developments relevant to corporate accountability during and after conflict. The event is scheduled to be held on-site only and will be followed by a small reception. \nSpeakers:\n\nOlena Uvarova (Head of the International Lab on business and human rights at Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University\, Researcher at the Law Group\, Wageningen University\, business and human rights specialist at UNDP).\nElla Skybenko (Eastern Europe/Central Asia Senior Researcher & Representative at Business & Human Rights Resource Centre).\nWaleed Mahmoud (FWO Doctoral Fellow at Ghent University & Visiting Researcher at the Asser Institute)\nEva Gerritse (Project lead Business\, Conflict & Human Rights at PAX)\nFurther speakers to be confirmed\n\nModerator:\nDmytro Cherneha (Research intern at the Asser Institute) & Dr. Antoine Duval (Senior researcher at the Asser Instiute) \nThis event is co-organised with the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence on Corporate Sustainability and Human Rights (Wageningen University) \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Communicating with impact: How to bring global citizenship and global issues close and create real engagement for international cooperation
DESCRIPTION:How do you embed global citizenship in your organization\, and how do you create real\, lasting engagement with global issues? How do we bring these topics closer to a wider audience – and how do we also reach young people in the process? During this meeting\, we will share learning experiences and insights on how we as organizations deal with global citizenship. Together\, we are investigating the role of communication in this and how we can give international solidarity more meaning and visibility. A moment to exchange experiences\, gain inspiration and go into depth together. \n  \nWhat can you expect?\nHow do we give global citizenship a meaningful place within our organizations\, at a time when rapid fundraising and marketing strategies often predominate? Is it possible to make room for awareness and involvement\, even if the pressure on short-term results is great? By putting global citizenship more at the heart of our work\, we aim to build broader support and sustainable support for international cooperation. \nBut what does this require of us? Do we need more time\, trust and patience to form real relationships and create lasting engagement on global issues? And how can we engage citizens in an inclusive and meaningful way on topics such as human rights\, democracy\, equality and climate justice? \nIn a previous session\, we already explored a number of insights. This meeting builds on that. Together\, we look for strategies\, inspiration and space to deepen communication and engagement — for more impact\, connection and global citizenship. \n  \nComponents of the meeting\n\nBest Practice | Marcel Catsburg of Woord & Daad discusses how the organization integrates the concept of global citizenship into its policy and how it seeks to connect with its supporters in a communicative way.\nInspirational Talk by creative strategist Ard Lok: What’s the secret of effective communication to engage people in a cause/movement?\nBest Practice | ErnstJan Stroes of Wilde Ganzen explains the steps the organization is taking to give global citizenship a crucial place in its policies and programs.\nExchanging and learning from each other.\n\n  \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab\n \n  \nPlease note: this event was originally posted in Dutch.

SUMMARY:Humanitarian Studies: Adapting and reworking in new times and contexts
DESCRIPTION:The International Institute of Social Studies is hosting the third edition of The Hague Humanitarian Studies Centre’s One-Day Conference which will look at how global political currents affect the work of humanitarian actors and researchers. \n\n\n\nGlobal political currents are buffeting humanitarian action and humanitarian studies in multiple contexts across the world\, with decisions taken in places like Washington severely affecting everyday humanitarian actors.  \n\n\n\nFor humanitarian actors and researchers\, these new times require adapting\, reworking and remixing of humanitarian activities to ensure adherence to principles like ‘do no harm’\, and continuing to work in vulnerable and fragile places. A major concern is the status of respecting and upholding International Humanitarian Law\, including the protection of medical and humanitarian workers.  \n\n\n\nAt the same time\, humanitarianism has a strong focus on localised responses\, with contextual actors and affected populations being required to take more and more of the brunt of funding cuts\, and more and more of the tasks associated with humanitarian programming.  \n\n\n\nThe questions that will be approached during this conference are:  \n\n\n\n\nHow can humanitarian studies adapt and remix within these new contexts? \n\n\n\nWhere does power lie now\, as the responsibilities and complications pile up? \n\n\n\nWhat is the role of academia/researchers in these challenging times?\n\n\n\nAnd how can we see the positive within a sea of negative headlines? \n\n\n\n\nThis third edition of The Hague Humanitarian Studies Centre’s One-Day Conference brings together humanitarian scholars and practitioners to share their knowledge\, pose questions and exchange ideas. \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nThe keynote speaker and programme will be announced in the coming months. \n	Register Here This link opens in a new tab\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Local Economic Development Course
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Jose Antonio Gallego Vázquez on Unsplash \nIntroduction\nBecause of globalisation and decentralisation\, economic development has shifted from large-scale national plans to territorial bound local plans known as Local Economic Development (LED). LED allows localities to plan and implement their economic development through a representative and participative forum that can build on existing economic advantages of its locality. The local government plays an important role in facilitating the development of the economy and creating ecosystems for entrepreneurship through priority setting in policy making\, convening all stakeholders and alignment with the higher tiers of government. \nLocal Economic Development (LED) requires an integrated approach where the public and private sector are aligned on priorities and where local governments have a certain level of decentralisation. \nThis course discusses the challenges of development\, LED as a concept in itself\, LED as an integrated approach\, the role of national and local government\, the role of the private sector and other economic stakeholders and the materialisation of a LED strategy. After having set these fundamental and contextual elements\, the course assess multiple LED strategies such as entrepreneurship development\, value chain development\, matching educational curricula with needs of the labour market\, assisting vulnerable groups to work and public-private partnerships. The course includes study visits that are aimed at lessons learned on the role of different stakeholders with the LED process. Furthermore\, the course embeds exchange moments between the international participants to stimulate peer-learning. \n  \nKey Information\nThis course is aimed at professionals involved in local economic development processes. Participants come from national\, regional and local government\, NGOs and donor and development organisations. \n  \nLearning objectives\nThis course helps participants: \n\nIdentify the typical economic development challenges that countries face\nUnderstand the LED framework\, including its characteristics and phases\nDefine the role that local governments\, the private sector and other important stakeholders can play in the promotion of LED\nUnderstand the stages of LED promotion processes at the local level\nLearn from examples of matching educational curricula with labour market needs\, assisting vulnerable groups with finding work\nIdentify the potential public\, private and development partner sources of LED finance\nComprehend how entrepreneurial ecosystems can be supported\nExplain how LED links to conflict prevention and peacebuilding\nIdentify the requirements for a sustainable and inclusive approach to value chain development that contributes to inclusive LED\nAnalyse how smart and creative city concepts promote LED\n\n  \nExperience\nThe course includes visits to a municipality where civil servants will explain the LED-strategy and implementation. Participants will also visit a ‘triple helix’ institute where public\, private sector work with research and development institutes\, a vocational training school and the private sector. Furthermore\, participants will work on different case studies from the work-practice of participants to apply the LED process to a locality and facilitate peer-to-peer exchanges. The training includes daily presentation by participants to further reflect and share lessons learned from their specific context. \n	Register Here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:[Colloquium] Securing (the minds) behind the quantum dream?
DESCRIPTION:Quantum innovation faces major engineering hurdles in translating quantum science into quantum technologies that can scale up and commercialise. The key to unlocking quantum ambitions is the coming together of scientific expertise\, engineering acumen and commercial savviness. \nAchieving these ambitions has sparked intense global competition for talent and expertise. Governments and institutions are responding by developing rules to protect sensitive research and technologies – a concept known as “knowledge security.” In light of the proposed Dutch Knowledge Security Screening Bill (tabled for early 2027) and the recent EU Quantum Strategy (July 2025)\, this talk explores on what “knowledge security” means for the pursuit of quantum innovation. \nSpeakers:\nAnh Nguyen is a PhD researcher in the Law and Governance of Quantum Technologies research group within the Institute for Information Law (IViR) at the University of Amsterdam. Her PhD looks at how legal dynamics play out in the emergence of quantum innovation value chains. The project delves into the role of law in the ring-fencing of access to material resources\, the politics of knowledge production\, and value appropriation from techno-scientific research in quantum innovation. \nProf. Dr Machiko Kanetake is the academic director and the chair of the executive board of the T.M.C. Asser Instituut. She is also Professor of International Law and Security Governance at the University of Amsterdam. \nHer groundbreaking research explores the intersection of international law\, security\, human rights\, and technology\, with a focus on sanctions\, arms and dual-use export control at the international\, EU\, and national levels\, and the regulation of surveillance technologies. Her current work centres on “research security” in Europe. \n	Register

SUMMARY:From Surveillance to Empowerment: Advancing the Responsible Use of Technology in Alternatives to Detention
DESCRIPTION:Governments are increasingly turning to digital technologies such as GPS ankle monitors and tracking apps as so-called “alternatives to detention.” But a new report from UNSW Sydney’s Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law\, the International Detention Coalition and the Refugee Law Lab shows these tools too often replicate detention in digital form\, restricting liberty\, undermining dignity and causing real harm for people on the move. \nThis launch will present the findings of our global study and introduce 10 Guiding Principles for ensuring technology reduces\, rather than expands\, detention. \nJoin us to explore how governments\, civil society and technologists can move towards genuine rights-based alternatives that promote freedom\, dignity and community integration. \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab\n \nWith thanks to the Global Migration Centre at the Graduate Institute of Geneva for kindly hosting this event\, and to Robert Bosch Stiftung for its generous support for this project.

SUMMARY:Just Peace Dialogue: Stemmen uit de stad
DESCRIPTION:Dit is een Nederlandstalig evenement/This event will be held in Dutch.
