DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 23 November\, FMS\, Africa in Motion and ‘the Association of the Sudanese Community in The Netherlands’ would like to welcome you to their political cafe on the current situation in Sudan. \nIn April this year\, 30-year ruling President Omar al-Bashir and his government were replaced by the military after months of vast protests\, which started over a tax on bread and fuel subsidies issued in December. After the military overthrew al-Bashir\, the demonstrators demanded a rapid transition to a civilian government. For weeks there were tense negotiations with the military\, while mass demonstrations were held. After severe escalations in June 2019 in which more than a hundred civilians were killed\, the two sides reached a power-sharing agreement. \nWhat does this power-sharing agreement entail exactly? What are the political challenges of Sudan? And what is the way forward? We will answer these and other questions\, and reflect on what our role can be together with experts\, activists\, and an engaged audience. \nCome and join the conversation on Saturday\, 23 November! SUMMARY:Accountability for the Rohingya Genocide: the ICJ Case
DESCRIPTION:The Rohingya genocide in Myanmar is one of the most pressing human rights challenges of our times. There have been various attempts at accountability\, including the UN Fact-Finding Mission and Investigative Mechanism and the pending ICC investigation\, although nothing has borne fruit yet.  \nHowever\, at the United Nations General Assembly in September\, The Gambia announced its intention to bring a case to the International Court of Justice under the 1948 Genocide Convention for the Rohingya genocide. \nOn Monday\, 11 November\, No Peace Without Justice is convening a meeting with the participation of Hon. SUMMARY:The Hague Conversations on Conflict – Human Rights and Conflict
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce the third in a new series of events by LINKS Europe and The Hague Humanity Hub\, which aims to rethink approaches to conflict prevention and resolution. \nOrganised in collaboration with the journal Security and Human Rights Monitor\, the event on 31 October will focus on Human Rights and Conflict\, highlighting how human rights violations can be the cause of an outbreak of conflict\, and the importance of respect for human rights in ensuring long-term sustainability in any resolution of violent conflict. Amongst other things\, the event will look to assess three main subtopics: \n– To what extent are human rights a domestic issue\, and to what extent are they a concern of the international community; when is humanitarian intervention justified? Who can/should authorise humanitarian intervention? \n– How can human rights be embedded in conflict prevention and conflict resolution processes in order to secure the sustainability of peace? \n– How do you monitor and address human rights issues in areas controlled by non-state actors and unrecognised states; Is the European response to the human rights situation in its geographical neighbourhood adequate? \nOur panel of experts will each open with their thoughts and experiences in relation to the topic\, before an open discussion\, in which we welcome and encourage the participation of the audience. The event will end with networking drinks for all those in attendance. \nAmong the panelists will be Piet de Klerk\, the current Chairman of the Netherlands Helsinki Committee and former Netherlands Ambassador-at-large on Human Rights Issues; and Dr Nienke van der Have\, Senior Legal Specialist advising on human rights and author of ‘The Prevention of Gross Human Rights Violations Under International Human Rights Law’. SUMMARY:Humanitarian Reality in Colombia: Solidarity for Human Rights Defenders
DESCRIPTION:A profile of The Community Leaders: Who are they? And what is their story? \nGenaro Graciano\, Defender of Human Rights and Nature\, specialised in agriculture and coffee culture. Coming from the municipality of Ituango (Antioquia). In 2009\, at the beginning of the construction of the extractive megaproject “Hidroituango”\, Genaro started witnessing the negative impact on the environment\, farms\, crops and social structure that this project was having. The seriousness of the problems\,  motivated him to devote himself to work in defence of human rights. He has joined the Movimientos de Rios Vivos Colombia and opposes the use of the river as merchandise for the construction of hydroelectric complexes. \nMilena Florez\, Defender of Human Rights and Nature\, mother of two children\, she has made use of her skills as a trader and entrepreneur to reproduce and defend life. As a lover of stories and guardian of memory\, she takes advantage of every opportunity to go out and tell the events of her region and to learn how the story of her land interconnects with the narrative from other regions. Since 2010\, she has been a member of Association of victims and those affected by megaprojects and of Movimientos de Rios Vivos Colombia. \nSince their arrival to Spain\, Milena and Genaro have met with the bank of ParisBas in Paris\, the Bundesbank in Frankfurt and the European Union in Brussels\, with whom they have exposed the Human Rights violations on how European banks investments generate suffering and insecurity to the local population. \nCarlos Paez: At the age of 22\, following multiple threats by the paramilitaries\, he and his family were expelled from their lands at gunpoint. Since then\, in the process of his struggle to regain his family’s farm\, he became a social leader fighting for the restitution of land. Founded the Urabá Land Claimants Association to help peasants to exercise their right to reclaim their land. In December 2018\, after 10 years of various judicial instances\, the Supreme Court\, under the transitional justice framework of the Victims and Witnesses Act\, ruled in their favour; a historical case for Colombia. Carlos is now a member of Tierra y Paz. \nNubia Russi: Leader and human rights defender\, member of the Human Rights Defender Committee of the municipality of Rocensvalles (Tolima). For more than 17 years\, she has worked devotedly with civil society and institutions for victims’ rights and peacebuilding\, especially for the victims of forced disappearance. Nubia is a member of CORFUPAZ. \nMilena\, Genaro\, Carlos and Nubia\, following the life threats that they have received in Colombia\, are under the Humanitarian Temporary Refuge program in Spain. \n  \nCitizen Diplomacy 5-A took this opportunity to invite them to come to The Hague to explain\, before the international community\, the reality in Colombia and how the transition to real peace in Colombia remains an “extremely complicated” process. \nGénaro\, Milena\, Carlos and Nubia have toured four European countries (Spain\, France\, Germany and Belgium) where they explained the difficult situation faced daily by human rights defenders in Colombia in the region of Antioquia\, Urabá and Tolima. DESCRIPTION:According to the INTERVICT Institute and Research and Documentation Center in the Netherlands\, more than 200\,000 individuals fall victim to domestic violence every year. This scenario is happening in a country that is described as the one who “cares the most about human rights” according to the 2019 Best Countries Ranking. \n  \nSo\, why is domestic violence still such a deep wound in our “civilized” societies? \nHumanity of Things (HuOT) in partners with ARISE-NL community\, are setting their aim in the empowering and support of domestic violence victims by providing them with the vital information\, awareness and clear roadmap of the helping points in Netherlands\, by using new technologies and digital platforms. \nVictims need to have a knowledge survival tool kit available at any time in order to save lives\, prevent victims from falling in the abuse cycle as well as protecting the children that become traumatized survivors of these relationships. \n  \nThrough this event\, we want to bring together multiple stakeholders to create a strong task force focused in the field solutions that can be a role model world wise and can help the non-Dutch victims in the Netherlands\, to have a better support designed to their specific challenges. \nDomestic violence affects us all as a society and we should respond as such\, as together we are stronger. \n  \nWe will be joined by speaker Marisa Monteiro Borsboom: with a legal background\, as a lawyer\, mediator\, legal manager and lecturer\, this was still not enough. SUMMARY:Hague Talks: How can humanitarian aid workers build resilience in high-stress environments?
DESCRIPTION:As a global society\, we rely upon 570\,000 humanitarian aid workers to bring security\, comfort and basic services to more than 131 million people in need\, including over 68 million refugees displaced by conflict and insecurity. Relief workers operating on the front lines of humanitarian response are routinely exposed to stress and chaos\, and as a result\, the sector continues to shoulder a largely overlooked mental health crisis. \nWorking in countries affected by war and natural disasters is inherently stressful\, yet aid workers also face a layer of psychological vulnerability which is exacerbated by the lack of adequate training\, support and management for such issues. The failure to adequately prepare and support staff has enormous negative consequences at three levels: \n\nIndividual humanitarian aid workers suffer increased trauma and stress levels\, perform under their potential\, get burned out and leave the field earlier.\nHumanitarian organisations operate less efficiently\, with higher costs for insurance and medical care\, and high staff turnover causing loss of institutional knowledge and inflated recruitment costs.\nPopulations in need receive a lower quality of care from agencies with high staff turnover and aid workers who are over-stressed\, less experienced and under-trained.\n\nThrough this event\, we explore more around the need for support amongst humanitarian aid workers in relation to stress management. We ask: what are the main stressors experienced by aid workers\, and how does stress impact them? What are the potential routes to resilience\, both at the individual and organisational level? What duty of care do organisations have in relation to the wellbeing of their staff? \nSPEAKERS \n\nDaniel Siegel – as one of the world’s leading neuropsychiatrists\, Dr Siegel focuses on exploring how human consciousness can evolve to meet the unprecedented challenges we face in today’s world. He is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA.\nHelen Barley – has worked in the international humanitarian sector for over 10 years\, with a focus on managing protection\, education and psychosocial support interventions for crisis affected populations. Helen is the Programme Director of the Contemplative Based Resilience (CBR) Project of the Garrison Institute International\, which aims to develop a more resilient and compassionate humanitarian aid sector.\nLya Jawad – is from Lebanon and for the last six years has worked with local and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Lebanon\, Syria\, Afghanistan\, Iraq and Turkey. Her work in the humanitarian field focused on gender based violence\, psychosocial support\, child protection and empowering the LGBTQIA community to strengthen their resilience.\n\nModerator for the event is Sander Tideman. He is an executive coach\, teacher and author\, with a focus on leadership transitions and strategic change. DESCRIPTION:The science of mind and its relevance for policy making in education\, health care\, humanitarian aid and the environment.\nWe are at a pivotal moment in our collective history in which the human mind and the sense of self that emerges from it\, are changing the face of our living world.  The events in the outer world can move us rapidly between denial and despair\, from anxiety to depression\, and our often-isolated efforts to make a change in the world can lead us to a feeling of frustration\, fear\, futility and burn-out. \nAt the same time\, insights from the new “science of the mind” into our mental and emotional life can give us great hope. We now know methods to empower our consciousness\, emotions\, beliefs\, identity\, relationships\, health and behavior away from stress and anxiety into resilience\, compassion\, well-being and meaningful action. Moreover\, with these insights we can also envision more effective human-centered policies in fields such as education\, health\, the environment\, peace and justice. She founded the Women Lawyers Group-Middle East and is board member of the International Women Business Group Abu Dhab.\nFrauke Heard-Bey\, historian and political scientist\, based in the UAE. She has studied social and political developments in the Gulf region over the past five decades.\nFatima al-Banawi\, actor and social artist\, based in Jeddah\, Saudi Arabia. DESCRIPTION:The Hague Hacks bridges the gap between human rights and technology. We facilitate and connect a range of trans-disciplinary actors to create and develop ideas and technology that empowers human rights defenders (H.R.D.s) and improves the safety and freedom of victims of human rights violations. The Hague Hacks Festival is our main ideation (idea creation) event of the year where we create a trans-disciplinary space for human rights defenders to engage with a wide diversity of disciplines\, and where they can share their experiences and unpack human rights violations in their communities.   \nAt The Hague Hacks Festival\, we bring tech experts\, designers\, engineers\, academics etc.\, as well as H.R.D.s\, diaspora members\, and human rights problem-owners together to share their plurality of perspectives and thus enrich the problem-solving process. This leads to innovative new ideas for human rights advocacy which we believe would never have occurred outside of our Festival ideation sessions.  \nThis year’s theme is Set Free: Tech to Empower Human Rights and Freedoms. So far\, we have established workshop themes: Political Participation (Nicaragua)\, Gender Inequality (Bangladesh)\, Peace Education (Netherlands\, Northern Ireland\, Turkey/Kurdistan\, North Korea)\, and Right to Expression and Association (Hong Kong).   \nWe would like to add a workshop on the theme of the Environment and Human Rights. We believe that the climate crisis presents an urgent threat that transgresses all human rights. There is a link between human rights and the environment\, and we would like to organize a workshop on this theme\, however we feel that we lack the experience and knowledge in environmental activism to effectively draw this link. As such\, we would like to invite you to a consultation in the form of a Hub Lunch at The Humanity Hub on Monday\, October 14th\, from 12–13:00.   \nAny input\, experience or resources that you may offer would be extremely appreciated.   \nThis event is open to Hub members. DESCRIPTION:The International Centre for Counter-Terrorism – The Hague (ICCT) in collaboration with the Program on Extremism at the George Washington University (GWPOE) and the New York Times\, cordially invites you to an event on “The ISIS Files”\, part of a series of events discussing the Program on Extremism’s newest research endeavor. The event will be held at the Humanity Hub in The Hague on 10 October 2019. \nOver the last few years\, New York Times foreign correspondent and Program on Extremism senior fellow Rukmini Callimachi led an effort that gathered over 15\,000 pages of documents left behind by ISIS in Iraq. These documents\, which became known as the “The ISIS Files\,” reveal the group’s sophisticated and organized governance structure and provide detailed evidence of their activities and atrocities. In September 2018\, the Program on Extremism and the New York Times announced a research partnership that will enable George Washington University to create the virtual public archive for the ISIS Files. Since the formalization of the partnership\, the Program on Extremism and the George Washington University’s Libraries and Academic Innovation division are in the process of creating a public\, free access digital repository that will allow researchers around the world to access the documents. \nThe event will begin with an opening introduction by Rukmini Callimachi followed by a panel discussion with her and Lorenzo Vidino\, moderated by Renske van der Veer. Following the panel\, there will be a public Q&A session. DESCRIPTION:The Power of Representation & the Representation of Power in Water Conflict and Cooperation\n\n\n\nThe 10th Hydro-hegemony conference (HH10) discusses ‘The Power of Representation & the Representation of Power in Water Conflict and Cooperation’. The conference is co-organised by IHE Delft\, Wageningen University & Research\, King’s College London\, the University of East Anglia\, and the London Water Research Group\, supported by the City of The Hague\, the Netherlands. It will take place on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 October 2019 in the Humanity Hub\, a venue within easy reach of The Hague Central Station. \n\n\n\nThe HH10 conference provides a platform to discuss representation of interests and issues as well as representation through discourses\, narratives and images.
