DESCRIPTION:Lunch & Learn: Negotiation and Conflict Resolution \nNo matter what profession we lead\, our daily life will always have a variety of situations where there are conflicts of interests\, opposing views\, and problems that need collective cooperation to overcome. Many people choose to avoid confrontations and forgo having to negotiate\, in fear of going into an unpleasant situation or sabotaging their relationship with others. \nIn this 2.5 hour workshop\, you will be introduced to the basics of negotiation and communicating your position\, by identifying different types of behavior taking place in communication and build a listening style that helps to assert your needs and concerns. You will also identify the main elements that make a good negotiation and get the chance to practice different tools in order to negotiate and achieve suitable outcomes. \nThis workshop is aimed at young professionals from various sectors\, students\, and anyone with little to no prior experience with negotiation and wants to get introduced to the subject. \nThe session will be run by Dr. Tareq Omairi\, a Learning & Development expert\, Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy\, and a Certified Project Management Professional (PMP). DESCRIPTION:The event has been postponed! \nLaunched in 2018 through a collaboration between the Peace Innovation Lab at Stanford University and the City of The Hague\, the Peace Innovation Institute works in the intersection of behavior design\, engineering\, technology\, innovation and business. \nThe best way to undo the damage that rampant capitalism and irresponsible use of technology have done\, is from the inside out. \nThe Peace Innovation Institute is working to catalyze a new peace technology industry by bringing about change from the ground up and making positive social change profitable. \nOne of the challenges surrounding peace is the fact that it hasn’t always been measurable. For over a decade now\, PII has been working to establish a metrics-based approach to measure and price the value of peace. The result was the Hague Peace Data Standard. \nIt measures various dimensions of real-time interactions\, between both individuals and groups. These are measured in the form of episodes of engagement\, across difference boundaries\, to determine the environmental and social impacts of both human behavior\, and of the mediating technologies people use to engage with each other in their daily lives. \n  \nMeasuring Peace: The Hague Peace Data Standard will examine peace data through the following four research directions: \n\nGroup identities: the characteristics of an individual that connect them to a group dynamic (e.g. Hindu\, Jew\, Christian or Muslim)\nDifference boundaries: the common characteristics of the differences in the group identities between any two individuals\, (e.g. Religion in the previous example)\nEpisodes of engagement: the unilateral sub-components of interactions between individuals.\nLongitudinal data: in which the sequence of engagement episodes over time is essential to understand which chains of interaction behavior\, in which order\, lead to sustainable peace.\n\nIf you’re interested about learning how you\, as an engineer\, can measure your impact\, and learn more about building peace into your process\, register before spots are taken! SUMMARY:Everyday experiences of ‘trafficked’ person in India
DESCRIPTION:In this Migration Series Seminar\, Jaffer Latief Najar will discuss everyday struggles of migrant urban migrants who are seen as ‘victims of trafficking’ in India. He will consider how they perceive and experience the current anti-trafficking practices\, looking into the harms that the current anti-trafficking system in India is introducing into their lives. \n\n\n\nHe looks specifically at the experiences of migrant sex workers and construction workers in India. \nThe presentation will highlight the role that agency\, citizenship and ‘unfreedom’ plays in migrants’ experiences. These migrants are often seen as ‘victims of trafficking’ by anti-trafficking stakeholders\, despite the fact that they do not see themselves in this light. This view by stakeholders causes harm to the migrants as it places them in a position of victimhood\, hence denying them their agency. \nThe migrants use the concept of citizenship as a form of belonging to struggle against and deal with these harmful interventions by anti-trafficking stakeholders. \nBackground\nThe dominant global discourse of human trafficking has been largely sketched as a campaign against the exploitation of human being. However\, the everyday realities of those who are framed as ‘trafficked victims’ indicates that the voices of these migrants are made invisible\, ignored or silenced. Such silencing (re)produces the harms and sufferings in their lives. \nIndia’s anti-trafficking system is not immune to such practices and (re)production of these harms. This presentation by Jaffer Latief Nafar is based on the biographic narratives\, observations and experiences of migrant sex workers and migrant construction workers in India. DESCRIPTION:During an interesting science night in Amsterdam\, professor Thea Hilhorst\, will give a 15 minute lecture on why the humanitarian aid system needs to be fixed. \n\n\n\nCurrently\, 135 million people in the world rely on humanitarian aid because of war\, persecution\, poverty and climate-related disasters. Climate change is a game changer: expectations are that many more people all over the world will be forced to flee their homes. It’s impossible for humanitarian agencies and NGOs to keep up with this number of people in need. The traditional ways of providing aid are no longer working in this new era. The event on 30 January will focus on Iran’s relations with the international community. Events at the start of this year once more juxtaposed the choice between diplomacy and negotiations and hard power.  \nThe JCPOA agreement between world powers and Iran was in 2015 hailed as success for diplomacy. Yet the agreement is now in tatters\, and the year started with the risk of yet another costly war in the Middle East. Is diplomacy always better than hard power? What space exists for informal diplomacy and track 2 initiatives in such circumstances? \nWe are delighted to welcome our keynote speaker\, Susan Collin Marks – Peace Ambassador and Former Senior Vice President of Search for Common Ground – a non-profit founded in 1982 with the mission to transform the way the world deals with conflict\, away from adversarial approaches\, toward cooperative solutions. DESCRIPTION:On 23 January\, 2020\, the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD Global) is hosting a launch event at the Hague Humanity Hub for their report: “The Many States of Activism: A Global Survey of Youth P/CVE Activists.”  \nThis report comes from their Youth Civil Activism Network (YouthCAN)\, a global initiative dedicated to inspiring and amplifying young\, positive voices against hate and extremism. As part of their work to enable youth leadership in P/CVE\, they surveyed over 700 youth activists in 83 countries about the barriers and opportunities that they face in their activism\, as well as which skills they need most. This report communicates their findings and offers recommendations for working with young P/CVE activists across non-violent\, violent and highly-violent contexts. \nContribute to the conversation with key stakeholders – including youth activists\, policy makers and NGOs – about the challenges facing youth empowerment in P/CVE and solutions that will enable truly youth-led responses to hate and extremism globally. SUMMARY:European Arms Exports and the Case of Yemen
DESCRIPTION:European arms exports are regulated by domestic law\, the European Common Position on arms export controls and the Arms Trade Treaty. These legal frameworks prohibits arms exports to countries where there is a clear risk that they might be used for internal repression or to commit serious violations of international humanitarian or international human rights law. \nThe reality\, however\, is different. The armed conflict in Yemen is a striking example. Despite an abundance of documented serious violations of international humanitarian law in Yemen committed by the Saudi Arabian-led military coalition\, many countries including Germany\, Italy\, Spain\, the UK and France continue to export arms\, components and spare parts and to provide crucial maintenance and support services. European arms companies are profiting\, but their wares are fueling the conflict\, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis\, and may even be contributing to international war crimes. \nThese exports are a flagrant example of non-compliance with arms export control laws. Can the European defense industry and authorities responsible for authorizing arms exports to regions of conflict be held to account for their roles in serious human rights and international humanitarian law violations? SUMMARY:Expert Roundtable: The Nexus from a Refugee Programming Perspective
DESCRIPTION:In refugee settings humanitarian aid is often delivered for many years. Therefore\, refugee camps are advantageous settings to develop and strengthen links between humanitarian action and development work. KUNO presents an expert meeting with Richard Sandison and Bram Jansen to explore the humanitarian-development nexus from a refugee programming perspective.\n\nRichard Sandison will bring a practical perspective on implementing various nexus approaches in specific refugee settings\, based on his experiences in Malawi and Tanzania. Sandison will discuss the challenges in implementing a nexus approach in Malawi\, look at the linkages between informal and formal CP systems and first-hand experience in implementing the CRRF in Uganda and how it is aligned (or not aligned) with the nexus. \nBram Jansen will bring an academic perspective\, based on his anthropological fieldwork in South Sudan and Kenya. Jansen would like to explore the idea of refugee camps as ‘drivers for development’. Jansen will share examples of development interventions in camp contexts\, but also of more organic processes of change that have emerged in protracted refugee contexts. SUMMARY:Profiles of the Missing from Colombia
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of International Human Rights Day\, the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) is organizing a public discussion in The Hague on the effort now underway to address the huge legacy of missing persons in Colombia. As many as 120\,000 people are missing as a result of five decades of conflict. All sectors of society have been affected by disappearances – perpetrated by state actors\, paramilitary and guerrilla groups\, and organized crime. \nAt ICMP’s Profiles of the Missing from Colombia\, relatives of missing persons\, as well as political activists\, members of the armed forces and former guerrilla groups\, and members of indigenous communities and others will examine the causes of the conflict\, the impact of disappearances on society and the rule of law\, and the central role that families of the missing can and must play in implementing key provisions of the Peace Agreement. \nThe Peace Agreement signed in 2016 between the Government and the largest guerrilla group\, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC)\, provides for specific measures to address disappearances and recognizes the central role of civil society and families of the missing and the de-mobilized FARC in providing information to the Search Unit for Missing Persons. \n[av_button label=’Register now!’ link=’manually\,https://www.eventbrite.com/e/profiles-of-the-missing-from-colombia-tickets-83311499939′ link_target=” size=’large’ position=’center’ label_display=” icon_select=’no’ icon=’ue800′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’theme-color’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \nThe event will be in Spanish with simultaneous interpretation in English!
