DESCRIPTION:From the 14th to the 20th of March a group of young Israelis and Palestinians\, and youth from other conflict affected settings will come together in The Hague to discuss and explore how youth can play an active role in peace and reconciliation processes. Together\, they will explore past examples and look towards future possibilities. In addition\, this group of young leaders will receive training in order to provide them with the tools to do so. \nThe MEPP Conference is part of YPI’s Young Leadership Experience\, a year-long programme for Israeli and Palestinian youth interested in expanding their leadership capabilities to strengthen their role as actors of change in the peace issue. \nWith this conference week of dialogue and training sessions coming to an end\, we would like to close the week by presenting our results\, before continuing the Young Leadership Experience in the region of our delegates. Together with you\, we would like to explore the following question: ‘How can Israeli and Palestinian youth play an active role in peace and reconciliation processes?’  \nThis event is by invitation only.

This hackathon is organized by the Mothership\, a collaboration between Space4Good\, World Startup Factory and AI Lab One. In the Mothership Missions\, select teams engage in an 8-week prototyping period using space data and AI technologies to help vulnerable landscapes on Earth. \nThe Big Blue mission invites coders to explore the oceans\, marine ecosystems and their declining health. DESCRIPTION:The Hub Lunch will take place on March 2\, 12:30 pm.  \nWe will be hosting it with Avinash Kulkarni from India\, the winner of the soft-landing challenge of The Hague Business Challenge. His start-up\, Kaizen Voiz Secure\, is about creating voice recognition systems\, which can be used as a learning and teaching tool\, for voice conversion\, tracking end beneficiaries of NGO projects\, and other uses.  \nKaizen Secure Voiz is a bootstrapped startup\, with market validated products and presence in India\, Netherlands\, and the USA. Their products are related to voice authentication\, voice biometrics\, voice to text conversion\, IVRS. \nWhat’s voice authentication? This is an ability to prove the identity of the speaker\, in a 10-sec phone call\, using signal processing and algorithms. Speaker can use his voice as a unique password and connect through IVRS/mobile app/laptop etc. \nUse cases: Tracking end beneficiaries of NGO projects\, providing learning and teaching tools through voice for local agency staff at donor countries\, use voice-based authentication for classroom attendance\, execute new compliances and “must attend” training programs for diverse staff across countries \nBenefits of this: Impact assessment becomes tangible with authenticated data on actual beneficiaries in the funded project\, flexible learning through voice-based tests for the target audience\, language-independent tool for any country for not for profit projects and creates a continuous engagement for NGOs\, with their investors/donors/beneficiaries beyond the project timeline. \nThe lunch will be provided by The Hague Business Agency to all of the participants.  \nThis is the Hub members-only event.  \n

His work focuses predominantly on security\, geopolitics and data. Prior to joining HCSS\, Paul interned at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he worked on global cyber capacity. \nProject Summary: \nThe Agrifood Dashboard measures Dutch interests in agri-food through trade\, development aid\, and infrastructure. Asser Institute in The Hague in the ‘Human Dignity and Human Security in International and European Law’ strand. Her work reflects on counterterrorism and\, more precisely\, on our evolving legal and policy capacity to deal with security threats\, where new forms of non-state transnational risk\, counter-risk strategy and technology are in play. \nProject Summary: \nThe digital revolution has led us to build virtual identities. Simultaneously\, modern states have acquired unprecedented capacities to collect data about everyone in a timely and almost invisible manner. How can our data be used to counter-terrorism in a legal\, democratic and trustworthy way? Citizens are consulted and informed. The project Rebecca will present aims at building a bridge between the state and its citizens in regulating the use of big data in security practices. DESCRIPTION:The event has been postponed! \nLaunched in 2018 through a collaboration between the Peace Innovation Lab at Stanford University and the City of The Hague\, the Peace Innovation Institute works in the intersection of behavior design\, engineering\, technology\, innovation and business. \nThe best way to undo the damage that rampant capitalism and irresponsible use of technology have done\, is from the inside out. \nThe Peace Innovation Institute is working to catalyze a new peace technology industry by bringing about change from the ground up and making positive social change profitable. \nOne of the challenges surrounding peace is the fact that it hasn’t always been measurable. For over a decade now\, PII has been working to establish a metrics-based approach to measure and price the value of peace. The result was the Hague Peace Data Standard. \nIt measures various dimensions of real-time interactions\, between both individuals and groups. These are measured in the form of episodes of engagement\, across difference boundaries\, to determine the environmental and social impacts of both human behavior\, and of the mediating technologies people use to engage with each other in their daily lives. \n  \nMeasuring Peace: The Hague Peace Data Standard will examine peace data through the following four research directions: \n\nGroup identities: the characteristics of an individual that connect them to a group dynamic (e.g. Hindu\, Jew\, Christian or Muslim)\nDifference boundaries: the common characteristics of the differences in the group identities between any two individuals\, (e.g. Religion in the previous example)\nEpisodes of engagement: the unilateral sub-components of interactions between individuals.\nLongitudinal data: in which the sequence of engagement episodes over time is essential to understand which chains of interaction behavior\, in which order\, lead to sustainable peace.\n\nIf you’re interested about learning how you\, as an engineer\, can measure your impact\, and learn more about building peace into your process\, register before spots are taken! SUMMARY:Everyday experiences of ‘trafficked’ person in India
DESCRIPTION:In this Migration Series Seminar\, Jaffer Latief Najar will discuss everyday struggles of migrant urban migrants who are seen as ‘victims of trafficking’ in India. He will consider how they perceive and experience the current anti-trafficking practices\, looking into the harms that the current anti-trafficking system in India is introducing into their lives. \n\n\n\nHe looks specifically at the experiences of migrant sex workers and construction workers in India. \nThe presentation will highlight the role that agency\, citizenship and ‘unfreedom’ plays in migrants’ experiences. These migrants are often seen as ‘victims of trafficking’ by anti-trafficking stakeholders\, despite the fact that they do not see themselves in this light. This view by stakeholders causes harm to the migrants as it places them in a position of victimhood\, hence denying them their agency. \nThe migrants use the concept of citizenship as a form of belonging to struggle against and deal with these harmful interventions by anti-trafficking stakeholders. \nBackground\nThe dominant global discourse of human trafficking has been largely sketched as a campaign against the exploitation of human being. However\, the everyday realities of those who are framed as ‘trafficked victims’ indicates that the voices of these migrants are made invisible\, ignored or silenced. Such silencing (re)produces the harms and sufferings in their lives. \nIndia’s anti-trafficking system is not immune to such practices and (re)production of these harms. This presentation by Jaffer Latief Nafar is based on the biographic narratives\, observations and experiences of migrant sex workers and migrant construction workers in India. Climate change is a game changer: expectations are that many more people all over the world will be forced to flee their homes.
