SUMMARY:Fragile States Index 2021 Launch
DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\n\nPerhaps the clearest lesson of 2020 was that fragilities can affect any country in the world. What started as a health crisis quickly cascaded across all the FSI indicators with overlapping and compounding challenges such as recessions\, protests\, and in some cases\, violence. However\, this year also presents a unique opportunity to explore what resilience looks like in different contexts\, and the role played by the development community\, civil society\, the private sector\, and government institutions to manage shocks and pressures. \n\n\n\nThe Fund for Peace\, in partnership with the peacebuilding INGO International Alert This link opens in a new tab\, will be holding a global virtual event on Thursday\, May 20\, that will bring together leading experts to discuss how societies can emerge from the COVID-19 crisis stronger and more resilient. Opening remarks will be given by Senator Chris Coons and Congressman Michael McCaul\, both of whom have been leaders in the drafting and passage of the landmark Global Fragility Act\, which could majorly impact the future of U.S. foreign policy. \n\n\n\nThis will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Alliance For Peacebuilding This link opens in a new tab’s Acting President and CEO\, Elizabeth (Liz) Hume. \n\n\n\nFeatured Speakers:\n\n\n\nSenator Chris Coons\, Member of US Senate Committee on Foreign RelationsCongressman Michael McCaul\, Ranking Member of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs\n\n\n\nPanel:\n\n\n\nCindy Chungong\, Africa Regional Director\, International AlertNealin Parker\, Co-Director\, Bridging Divides Initiative\, Princeton UniversityNatalie Fiertz\, Programs Manager\, Fund for PeaceSenior Representative\, African Development Bank \n\n\n\nThe 2021 Fragile States Index is the 17th annual iteration of a data-driven policy tool that stands as a leading measure of political\, social\, and economic pressures across 179 countries.  \n\n\n\nFor over 60 years\, The Fund for Peace(FFP) has been a world leader in developing practical tools and approaches for reducing conflict. With a clear focus on the nexus of human security and economic development\, FFP contributes to more peaceful and prosperous societies by engineering smarter methodologies and smarter partnerships. FFP empowers policy-makers\, practitioners\, and populations with context-specific\, data-driven applications to diagnose risks and vulnerabilities and to develop solutions through collective dialogue. SUMMARY:Countering Hate Speech Online Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the past year\, communicating online has been more popular (and necessary) than ever before. While there are clearly many benefits to online communication\, online hate speech poses an increasing threat. Hate speech can take on many different forms and is often not easily detected\, and rarely efficiently countered. Most commonly\, hateful comments and posts are reported\, which can solve the problem in the short term but not sustainably.  \n\n\n\nThis year’s World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development\, we want to contribute to raising awareness about the importance of safe online environments and the threat that hate speech poses to dialogue and development.  \n\n\n\nIn collaboration with our partners Youth for Peace (BiH) and the ALTer Hate Campaign (BiH) we are organising an interactive workshop on May 21. Aiming to raise awareness about online hate speech\, it will also equip participants with practical tools to counter online hate speech and help to create more peaceful and safe online environments. \n\n\n\nRegister for the free workshop below to receive the Zoom link. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:The Hague Conversations on Conflict - Yemen: Once again at a crossroads
DESCRIPTION:Started in 2019 by LINKS Europe and The Hague Humanity Hub\, The Hague Conversations on Conflict aim to rethink approaches to conflict prevention and resolution and to provide a forum where the changing nature of conflict can be analysed and assessed\, together with the responses of international society. \n\n\n\nA new situation is emerging in Yemen\, both on the military and the political fronts\, with several ongoing efforts to revive and support the UN peace process\, including efforts by the US Special Envoy for Yemen\, Timothy Lenderking\, and the European Union.   \n\n\n\nThe recent military campaign in Marib suggests that no talks will be held before there are gains on the ground. This undoubtedly poses serious concerns for the humanitarian situation amidst poor donor pledges in both 2020 and 2021. This reality cannot be ignored as it could shape the peace process going forwards and is capable of redefining Yemen’s relationship with its neighbours.  \n\n\n\nLooking at the conflict from a regional perspective\, it is now clear that neither Iran’s nor Saudi Arabia’s roles can be ignored or be disregarded in the peace process. In addition\, other actors have pitched in\, with some\, such as the UAE\, playing rather ambiguous roles. Conversely\, Oman has been active since the beginning to foster dialogue between the different Yemeni groups and is open to mediate between all Yemeni actors.    \n\n\n\nWith Yemen at a crossroads on various fronts\, this event will look into the current political\, security\, regional and humanitarian prospects for the future.  \n\n\n\nAfter the panel discussion and Q&A\, participants will be given the chance to discuss the topic and network in online break-out rooms during which some of the issues discussed can be further unpacked. Grab this chance to meet new people and keep the conversation going! \n\n\n\nSpeakers:\n\n\n\nH.E. Ms Sahar Ghanem – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Yemen to the Kingdom of the Netherlands\, and a Non-resident Ambassador to Sweden and Norway; Permanent Representative of the Republic of Yemen to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical WeaponsAmbassador Peter Semneby – Sweden’s Special Envoy for YemenAhmed Nagi – Nonresident Scholar at the Malcolm H. SUMMARY:UNHCR Webinar: “Op de vlucht tijdens corona”
\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

DESCRIPTION:This edition of the DCHI Academy on Thought Leadership is powered by RSM and featuring highlights of the DCHI Humanitarian Innovation Course. \n\n\n\nWhat role does knowledge management play in the design of your partnerships? How do you develop a commercial perspective on your humanitarian aid or development project? Will it help you? And where should you start?   \n\n\n\nHumanitarian organisations and businesses differ significantly. Running a food bank is not the same as running a supermarket\, and an organisation delivering relief items after a disaster can’t be compared to PostNL delivering packages. Although collaborating with the private-sector is strongly encouraged when it comes to innovation\, the differences in objectives and cultures often act as obstacles that can be off-putting\, and seem risky.  \n\n\n\nThis DCHI academy aims to open up the conversation from all sectors\, and explore how we can start sharing insights and knowledge with each other. We will explore some of the fundamental differences between the NGO\, NPO and commercial sectors\, but more importantly how we can exchange knowlegde and how do Academics and Universities enable us learn from each other.  \n\n\n\nYou can join our free learning event on 1 June from 14:30 until 16:30 hr. (CEST). Tune in at this edition of the DCHI Academy with humanitarian managers\, business leaders\, philanthropes\, innovators and academics. The programme has speakers on Strategy\, Partnership Management\, Non-Profit Management\, and Humanitarian Logistics. The event also features an exercise from our latest DCHI Innovation Course\, facilitated by alumni\, that will help you elevate your future approach to cross-sector partnerships.  \n\n\n\n\nPROGRAMME & REGISTRATION

SUMMARY:Bring Human Rights Home: Conversations on Human Rights and Why they Matter
DESCRIPTION:“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”\n\n\n\nThis basic principle forms the foundation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights This link opens in a new tab – a globally recognized affirmation that all rights apply to everyone everywhere. No matter who you are\, where you live\, or what you do\, everyone has the same rights. But our ability to enjoy these fundamental freedoms remains fragile – because “human rights” seem like an abstract concept with little connection to our daily lives\, or because claiming them may even be dangerous. In order to go back to the core and talk about what human rights mean for us all\, we need to bring human rights home.Through the #BringHumanRightsHome campaign\, the Netherlands Helsinki Committee\, in partnership with human rights organisations from across Europe\, is sharing the personal stories of courageous people from eight different countries whose rights were severely violated. Hailing from Azerbaijan\, Hungary\, Kazakhstan\, Poland\, Russia\, Turkey\, Ukraine\, and the Netherlands\, they overcame opposition in court\, personal threats\, and financial hardship; stood up to actors much more powerful than themselves – yet never gave up. With the support of friends\, family\, and communities\, they reclaimed their rights – for themselves\, and ultimately\, for us all. Their stories stand as a powerful reminder that we can all stand up for human rights.  As part of our campaign\, the Netherlands Helsinki Committee invites you to join in the conversation on human rights and why they matter at our international online event on 1 June. \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nModerator: Jelle Brandt Corstius\, Dutch journalist and former Russia foreign correspondent \n\n\n\nWord of welcome by Pepijn Gerrits\, Executive Director of the Netherlands Helsinki Committee \n\n\n\nKey note speech by Caroline de Gruyter\, journalist and expert on European politics and history: How did human rights evolve in Europe’s recent history? \n\n\n\nThe campaign: Stories from the Netherlands \, Hungary and Ukraine \n\n\n\nKirsten Meersschaert\, Netherlands Helsinki Committee \n\n\n\nAnikó Bakonyi\, Hungarian Helsinki Committee \n\n\n\nTetiana Pechonchyk\, Human Rights Centre ZMINA \n\n\n\nYou can also show your support for human rights and by joining and sharing the #BringHumanRightsHome campaign! This link opens in a new tabAbout the NHCOur mission is to build and secure justice and compliance with international human rights agreements among OSCE participating states. Established in 1987\, we represented Dutch civil society in the Helsinki Movement. For over 30 years\, we have helped build bridges between public institutions\, international organisations\, practitioners\, and civil society. We look at the big picture\, taking a holistic approach in strengthening the rule of law\, safe-guarding human rights\, and building the capacity of civil society. We do so through our four programmes: Access to Justice\, Criminal Justice Reform\, Human Rights Defence and Integrity & Accountability. For more information please contact Marcela Rilovic\, Communications Manager at the NHC (mrilovic@nhc.nl This link opens in a new tab). \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Cooperative Urban Futures 2: Placemaking for sustainable transition at the street-level
DESCRIPTION:Do you think more emphasis should be put on creating streets for people and not cars? Are you wondering how experimental placemaking initiatives can become permanent? \n\n\n\nJoin in on 1 June at 17.00 – 18.30 CEST to discuss how tactical urbanism\, notably street-level experiments and placemaking\, can lead to systemic sustainable transition at the city-level. With COVID-19 serving as both an accelerator and a barrier to placemaking and conviviality\, we will examine some of the positive and negative aspects of the pandemic when it comes to street-level change. Experts from the field will come together to discuss the enablers and barriers to sustainable street transformation and look at how such initiatives can be upscaled.  \n\n\n\nGuests\n\n\n\nLuca Bertolini\, Professor at the University of AmsterdamAnna Bradley\, Researcher & Project Manager at STIPO and Placemaking EuropeJulia Jarass\, Researcher at the German Institute for Transport ResearchLior Steinberg\, Founder of HumankindRoland Krebs\, SuperwienModerators: Bahanur Nasya\, Eutropian & Livia del Conte\, EUKN\n\n\n\n\nWATCH HERE

SUMMARY:The decolonization of aid #2: a conversation from a development cooperation perspective
DESCRIPTION:In a series of dialogues\, this conversation will be the second.  \n\n\n\nThe series\n\n\n\nWith the  #BLM debates\, and other anti-racism protests\, the discussion about the decolonization of aid got an impulse. Blogs\, panel discussions (sometimes very heated) and Tweets stumbled over one another. We witnessed many statements and opinions\, but perhaps not so much common ground to proceed from. \n\n\n\nKUNO\, Partos\, and The Institute of Social Studies (ISS) we take one step back and approach the discussion in a series of talks. Step by step\, we highlight an aspect of this debate. We ask two experts to engage in a conversation with one another to explore the controversies and perhaps find some common grounds. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nTulika Srivastava\, Director Women’s Fund AsiaLydia Zigomo\, Global Programmes Director at Oxfam International.\n\n\n\nAll dialogues in this series will be moderated by: \n\n\n\nKiza Magendane\, The Broker\, knowledge broker\, essayist and writer\, andThea Hilhorst\, professor Humanitarian Aid at the International Institute of Social Studies\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Opportunities for Iraq: An online event
DESCRIPTION:NIMD has teamed up with Het Grote Midden Oosten Platform This link opens in a new tab to organize a discussion on the future of Iraq. The event will be held online in Dutch at 4-5.30pm (CEST) on 8 June. \n\n\n\nSince 2019\, Iraq’s streets have regularly filled with protesters. In the capital\, Baghdad\, but also in the southern Basra and in northern cities\, young people in particular are calling on politicians to implement political reforms. And to commit to jobs and better services to citizens. \n\n\n\nHow can the Netherlands contribute to democracy in Iraq\, and support these young people so that they know they are not alone? \n\n\n\nOn 8 June\, we’ll team up with experts and Dutch politicians to explore. \n\n\n\nThe programme\n\n\n\nThe role of the UN cannot be overlooked in any conversation about Iraq. That is why we are pleased that UN envoy Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert This link opens in a new tab will join us. She will address the challenges faced by the United Nations Mission in Iraq This link opens in a new tab (UNAMI)\, and reflect on the opportunities for reform. \n\n\n\nOur second guest speaker\, Arabist and lawyer Laila al-Zwaini This link opens in a new tab\, believes enormously in the strength of young people in Iraq. She sees a growing civil movement starting to emerge amidst all the chaos and violence. The Arabic word for civil is ‘madaniya‘ and this concept\, which is rooted in cultural values and traditions\, could guide these groups as they build their homeland. \n\n\n\nThe meeting will be introduced by Erwin van Veen This link opens in a new tab (Clingendael This link opens in a new tab). He will provide an analysis of the political\, economic and social developments in Iraq affecting the transition. Dutch MP Ruben Brekelmans This link opens in a new tab (VVD This link opens in a new tab party) and MEP Thijs Reuten This link opens in a new tab (PvDA This link opens in a new tab) will also share their view of Iraq’s future. \n\n\n\nThe event will be moderated by independent advisor and editor\, Mark Snijder. This link opens in a new tab \n\n\n\nFollow the discussion\n\n\n\nThe event will be in Dutch. You can join via livestream.  \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:The Virus and Violence
DESCRIPTION:Background \n\n\n\nWell into the second year of the deadliest pandemic in a century\, a growing number of studies have sought to unpack the link between COVID-19 and conflict. However\, those studies tend to either rely on anecdotal evidence\, or they systematically focus on one outcome only: violence. Yet\, we know that the effects of exogenous shocks like a pandemic on conflict can take time to develop and may not be reflected in immediate surges in violence. At least some of the causal mechanisms between COVID-19 and violent conflict\, if they exist at all\, are most likely indirect. Factors such as socio-economic marginalization\, diminished state capacity\, and an erosion of social cohesion potentially serve as key mediating factors that develop gradually or initially operate latently. In other words\, we must consider the potential impact of the pandemic on conflict drivers and processes\, not just outcomes such as violence. \n\n\n\nTo account for the possible effects of COVID-19 on overall conflict dynamics\, Mercy Corps has led research using a systems-level approach in three conflict-affected countries: Afghanistan\, Colombia\, and Nigeria. A more holistic assessment of the pandemic’s impact thus far will help to not only anticipate changes in conflict dynamics and identify leverage points for humanitarian\, development\, and peacebuilding interventions\, but also flag vulnerabilities for further disease spread and the factors that help and hinder public health responses\, including vaccination campaigns. \n\n\n\nIn an online webinar hosted by the Knowledge Platform for Security and Rule of Law\, two of Mercy Corps researchers who led this study will present its findings\, as well as discuss its implications for future policy and programming. \n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\nGabrielle Aron\, Research Project Lead\, Mercy CorpsSheilla Uzor Onasanya\, Strategic Learning Manager\, Mercy Corps NigeriaDutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) representative\n\n\n\nRegistration \n\n\n\nRegistration is mandatory to attend this event.
