SUMMARY:ICCT Annual Conference 2023 - Hybrid Extremism: Causes and Responses to Anti-Institutional and Far-Right Extremisms
DESCRIPTION:International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) is hosting their Annual Conference\, where researchers\, practitioners\, and policymakers will come together to explore the causes\, challenges\, and responses to far-right and anti-institutional extremisms in a world of flux. \n\n\n\nDemocratic principles are being challenged on all sides\, the social fabric is eroding\, and public trust in core institutions corroded. Trends like these are not entirely new\, but have been further exacerbated by the Covid-19 crisis\, thriving conspiracy theories\, and proactive disinformation campaigns. These conditions are conducive to the rapid emergence of so-called “anti-institutional extremism”\, the re-emergence of right-wing extremism\, and the hybridisation of extremist ideologies\, facilitated by a changing and pervasive information ecosystem. Such developments have far-reaching effects\, manifesting both locally and globally\, which will be discussed throughout this conference.  \n\n\n\n\nFind more information and sign up here

SUMMARY:ISS: Conflict compounded: Implications of the war in Ukraine on global development challenges
DESCRIPTION:In February 2022 Russian forces invaded Ukraine\, devastating the lives of an estimated 44 million people. Approximately 21.2 million people\, mostly women and children\, have crossed the border and fled to neighboring countriesOpens external. \n\n\n\nWith many countries actively or indirectly involved\, this conflict can be considered a gamechanger\, with far-reaching global consequences. \n\n\n\nThis event\, the fourth episode of Research InSightS LIVE\, will explore the compounding effects of the war in Ukraine on global development challenges. Our speakers will look into this issue from different lenses: \n\n\n\n\nWhat is the impact of the war on the liberal international order?\n\n\n\nHow does this war affect the political and economic survival of vulnerable countries in the global south\, like for instance Sri Lanka?\n\n\n\nWhat are the current and longer-term implications for global development\, including food (in)security?\n\n\n\nHow does this war impact the work of organizations involved in humanitarian work or development both internationally and on the ground?\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\nDr Oane Visser (ISS) – Based on his long-term research in Russia and Ukraine and on global food politics\, Oane Visser looks at the current and longer-term implications of the war in Ukraine for global food (in)security and development. He situates this in the increased geopolitical fragmentation (including of international agencies\, and ‘global’ value chains)\, the long-standing vulnerabilities of the global food system (such as excessive corporate concentration and speculation) and recent vulnerabilities due to climate change\, and indebtedness exaggerated by the covid19 pandemic.\n\n\n\nDr Shyamika Jayasundara-Smits (ISS) – Drawing on her past and ongoing research on impact of armed conflicts and war economies on post-war transitions\, Shyamika Jayasundara-Smits will focus on how the ongoing war in Ukraine is affecting political and economic survival and foreign policy choices of small states in the Indian ocean region. She will focus on Sri Lanka\, a small island nation in the Indian ocean to show how Russia’s war in Ukraine is being felt by Sri Lanka; that is caught up in a twin crisis of economic-political in the post-pandemic period\, that is also caught up in the midst of militarised power play of global and regional powers that are competing to control and dominate the Indian ocean region. \n\n\n\nProfessor Wil Hout (ISS) – Wil Hout will focus on the international ramifications of the war in Ukraine\, in particular for the operation of the so-called liberal international order. The liberal order that came into being at the end of World War II is a rules-based order in which multilateral institutions have been playing a central role. The Russian invasion of Ukraine should not only be understood as an attempt to rearrange the geopolitical order in Eastern Europe\, but needs to be assessed also as an attack on the fundamental principles governing the post-war international order.\n\n\n\nRajin Alqallih-van der ZijdeOpens external (PAX) – While the war in Ukraine is dominating daily news\, there are currently 26 other ongoing conflicts in the world\, including the war in Yemen which has been raging for almost a decade. Rajin Alqallih-van der Zijde will speak about the effects of the war in Ukraine on the work of humanitarian and development organizations in Yemen.\n\n\n\n\n\nSign up here

SUMMARY:Democracy Drinks
DESCRIPTION:On 29 June 2023 from 17:00 to 19:00\, the next edition of the #DemocracyDrinks will take place at Grand Café Utopie This link opens in a new tab! This edition is titled: Stepping up the protection of civic space: What can you do? \n\n\n\nAs we discussed during the Summit for Democracy This link opens in a new tab and Democracy Under Threat Coalition This link opens in a new tab in March 2023\, democracy is under threat. This is unfortunately our current reality across Europe\, as well as the Netherlands. Democracy is about more than free and fair elections. It is also about restoring trust and protecting the space where people can have their voices heard and advocate for a better society. \n\n\n\nAt this edition of #DemocracyDrinks\, we want to reflect on what we can do to protect our democracy\, more specifically civic space. How can we build vibrant and open civic spaces to strengthen our democracies where we can make sure citizens can speak out\, assemble and advocate? \n\n\n\nSpotlight Speakers\n\n\n\nThe June edition of the #DemocacyDrinks offers a unique opportunity to hear a short assessment of the civic space in Europe and The Netherlands from our spotlight speakers: \n\n\n\n\nMarjolein Kuijers\, Policy Officer Right to Protest\, Amnesty International\, The Netherlands. This link opens in a new tab\n\n\n\nAïcha Chaghouani\, Relations and Advocacy Officer\, Netherlands Helsinki Committee This link opens in a new tab.\n\n\n\n\nThe event will be moderated by NHC Executive Director Kirsten Meijer. \n\n\n\nFollowing this panel discussion\, there will be ample time for a Q&A session\, followed by time for an informal discussion\, drinks\, and networking. \n\n\n\nWhat are #DemocracyDrinks?\n\n\n\nOur #DemocracyDrinks bring together democracy advocates\, thinkers and enthusiasts to connect in an informal setting. \n\n\n\nAs a valuable opportunity for networking\, the event will be all about making new contacts and catching up with people you know. You can test new ideas; plan common initiatives; and find moral support and inspiration. \n\n\n\n#DemocracyDrinks were launched by Defend Democracy This link opens in a new tab in Brussels in 2018. And\, since then\, the idea has taken off. #DemocracyDrinks have taken place around the world\, including in Washington DC\, Berlin\, Kathmandu and\, since last year\, The Hague. \n\n\n\nOur previous #DemocracyDrinks in The Hague have attracted a lively mixture of people from NGOs\, international institutions\, think tanks and national government\, among others. \n\n\n\nThe event series in The Hague is a collaboration between the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) This link opens in a new tab\, the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC) This link opens in a new tab and The Hague Humanity Hub. SUMMARY:Knowledge-Sharing Session- Staying Secure: Protecting Digital Communications and Data
DESCRIPTION:Join Richard Costelloe and The Hague Humanity Hub for an exclusive knowledge-sharing session on July 4 about the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats. Cyber attacks threaten to disrupt organisations by targeting critical assets\, undermining the confidentiality and integrity of data\, causing financial losses\, and eroding the trust of customers and partners. \n\n\n\nIn this training and workshop Richard Costelloe\, cybersecurity expert\, will review how to protect personal and professional email account and data\, secure digital devices and promote the safe use of social networking. We will dissect common phishing and malware attack techniques\, shedding light on the tell-tale signs that may indicate a digital attack. SUMMARY:KUNO: Humanitarian situation and response in Sudan
DESCRIPTION:KUNO is hosting a panel on the ongoing situation in Sudan. \n\n\n\nThe ongoing fighting in Sudan has a devastating impact on the population: more than three million people have been displaced\, and 24.7 million – over half the population – are in need of assistance. Aid organizations are struggling to adjust and increase their humanitarian efforts and programmes: employees of five international and national aid organisations operating in Sudan told reporters that their employers had suspended humanitarian and development programmes. The humanitarian response in Sudan is dealing with funding and security constraints\, and tries to navigate its way through bureaucratic obstacles imposed by authorities. Sudan’s war is barely a few months old\, yet aid actors already fear international fatigue and neglect. \n\n\n\nAs we are dealing with so many challenges to get humanitarian aid to the places where it is most needed\, whilst Sudanese civilians are struggling to survive and face high levels of violence every day\, there is a strong need to exchange amongst practitioners working in the Sudanese context.   \n\n\n\nThe following topics will be reflected upon: \n\n\n\n\nWhat are the main humanitarian (access) challenges which organizations are facing?\n\n\n\nHow do humanitarian organizations deal with those challenges and how to create and preserve humanitarian space? \n\n\n\nWhat does conflict sensitivity mean in the current context in Sudan\, and how does it define and shape our programming?\n\n\n\nWhich actors are best placed to operate in conflict hotspots\, and how can the international community support and learn from those actors?\n\n\n\nHow can we together -policy makers\, humanitarian practitioners\, researchers- make sure to keep the conflict in Sudan on the international agenda? How can we expand our collective impact to improve the situation for Sudanese civilians?\n\n\n\n\nPanelists\n\n\n\n\nAnette Hoffmann\, Senior Research Fellow\, Conflict Research Unit\, Clingendael Institute\,\n\n\n\nTinomuzivashi Zhou\, PLAN Head of humanitarian action\, DRA joint response lead\,\n\n\n\nLeon Willems\, Senior Advisor\, Free Press Unlimited\,\n\n\n\nSaad Abdulmahmoud\, engaged with several humanitarian initiatives of Sudanese diaspora organizations\,\n\n\n\nMarie Smit\, Second Secretary\, Development & Humanitarian Affairs\, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Sudan\, Eritrea & Chad.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nTo sign up\, send an email to: kuno@kuno-platform.nl \n\n\n\n\nFind more information here

SUMMARY:Global Risk Advice: Hostile Environment Awareness Training
DESCRIPTION:The Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) is a 3-day\, residential course\, hosted by Global Risk Advice\, designed for those who contribute to the world in challenging\, remote\, or hostile regions. In areas of poor governance\, conflict\, and natural disasters or facing threats of war\, crime and conflict can result in real danger and medical facilities can be few\, substandard\, or remote. \n\n\n\nHEAT participants learn to recognize\, assess and avoid or handle risks. Should an incident occur\, they are trained to respond according to best practices in the field that optimize and promote the likelihood of a positive outcome. SUMMARY:ICCT to Host - Victims of terrorism and their right to access justice: Challenges and solutions
DESCRIPTION:International Centre for Counter-Terrorism is hosting a panel discussion on victims of terrorism and their right to access justice. \n\n\n\nVictims’ right to access to justice is a fundamental human right and a principle of the rule of law. To exercise this right\, States have the obligation to provide adequate avenues for victims to access the judicial system and have their cases heard before a competent jurisdiction. How can these obstacles be resolved? How can the experiences\, perspectives and priorities of victims be (best) considered during the investigation and trial process? And what are the victims’ experiences with the judicial system? These are some of the questions to answer in order to facilitate victims’ fight to access justice. The following panellists will discuss these and other questions: Niki Siampakou This link opens in a new tab\, Jeanne Sulzer This link opens in a new tab\, Hope Rikkelman This link opens in a new tab\, Catherine Marchi-Uhel This link opens in a new tab \n\n\n\n\nMore Info Here! SUMMARY:#DemocracyDrinks – Disrupting democracies
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 26 September for our monthly #DemocracyDrinks.   \n\n\n\nFor this next edition of the #DemocracyDrinks we want to reflect on some of the geopolitical dimensions between Russia and the EU. In the previous edition we focused on what we can do to protect our civic space and strengthen our democracies. Now we are zooming out and looking at the tensions on democracies by foreign states.   \n\n\n\nOur guest speaker will be Amy Eaglestone\, PhD researcher at the University of Birmingham who will speak about her research which focuses on the role of political parties in democracy reform in the Eastern European Neighborhood. This year she has also been working with the KPSRL on a project about responses to polarization in the region. She will also discuss the geopolitical relationship between the EU and Russia.  \n\n\n\nJoin the discussion on September 26th at the Hague Humanity Hub.   \n\n\n\nWhat are #DemocracyDrinks?  \n\n\n\nOur #DemocracyDrinks bring together democracy advocates\, thinkers and enthusiasts to connect in an informal setting. \n\n\n\nThe event series in The Hague is a collaboration between the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy This link opens in a new tab (NIMD)\, the Netherlands Helsinki Committee  This link opens in a new tab(NHC) and The Hague Humanity Hub This link opens in a new tab.   \n\n\n\n\nSign up here!

SUMMARY:WO=MEN Dutch Gender Platform - Gender MPI: Werk Maken van Politieke Participatie (Dutch Event)
DESCRIPTION:Verandering begint met actie. Want woensdag 22 november komt snel dichterbij.  \n\n\n\nHet evenement wordt geco-host door Tweede Kamerleden Songül Mutluer This link opens in a new tab (PvdA) en Derk Boswijk This link opens in a new tab (CDA)\, met de moderatie in handen van Laila Ait Baali\, directeur WO=MEN Dutch Gender Platform. \n\n\n\n\nMeer Informatie Hier!

SUMMARY:Leiden University - GTGC Lunch Seminar: Human Rights for Governing Digital Platforms
DESCRIPTION:Our member\, Leiden University’s research program Global Transformations and Governance Challenges are hosting a research presentation. On Monday 9 October 2023 from 12:00-13:00 in room 4.78\, Jelena Belic This link opens in a new tab\, Matthew Canfield This link opens in a new tab\, Rachel Griffin This link opens in a new tab\, Henning Lahmann This link opens in a new tab\, and Barrie Sander This link opens in a new tab will present their research on ‘The Promise and Perils of Human Rights for Governing Digital Platforms’.  \n\n\n\nRecent decades have witnessed the emergence of digital platforms as the “core organisational form” of informational capitalism. While platformisation is facilitating greater interconnection between actors around the world\, many perceive it as threatening core social and democratic values.  In response\, policymakers\, civil society organisations\, and academics have begun to frame platform governance through the framework of human rights. Yet while it offers a salient language of social justice\, it is unclear whether it is legally and conceptually adequate to address the issue. \n\n\n\n\nMore Info Here! This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:BarefootLaw's 10 Year Anniversary Celebration - Failing Forward: Building resilience through Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Our member\, BarefootLaw\, as one of the forerunners of innovation in access to justice\, invites all the legal enthusiasts for a day of reflection and deliberation on the future of law. How do we creatively use technology to promote access to justice and how can technology be used effectively to achieve the SDG16 goals? \n\n\n\nOn this occasion\, they aim to reflect on their journey\, recognizing that innovation often blooms from the seeds of failure. “Failing Forward” as the central theme focuses on the invaluable lessons and opportunities that arise when we embrace innovation in the field of law. It is heartfelt exploration of the lessons\, challenges\, and opportunities that have shaped BarefootLaw’s journey in redefining access to justice in grassroots communities. \n\n\n\nCelebrate with BarefootLaw as they look back on ten years of using technology and innovation to facilitate access to justice in Africa. \n\n\n\nAgenda \n\n\n\n\nShort film\n\n\n\nKeynote address by ED BarefootLaw\n\n\n\nPanel Discussion\n\n\n\nNetworking Reception\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\n\nGerald Abila\, Executive Director of BarefootLaw\n\n\n\nSarai Chisala-Tempelhoff\, Founder of Gender and Justice Unit Malawi\n\n\n\nLisa Jordan\, Managing Director of Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here! SUMMARY:The Handshake (3rd Edition)
DESCRIPTION:Navigating your career in the world of peace & justice can be tough: with so many potential options\, causes\, and routes into the sector. Sometimes it can even be difficult to think where to begin- do I need to do several internships? Does everyone need to go into ‘programme management’? And why does every UN job require a 24-page application form?  \n\n\n\nThat’s why The Hague Peace & Justice Talent Hub has launched ‘The Handshake’: an event series where we invite senior figures from the world of peace & justice to join in conversation and reveal how they have ended up where they are in their career! You will have the chance to ask questions\, get insights\, and be inspired. The third edition features Siobhan Richards from the Mukwege Foundation This link opens in a new tab. \n\n\n\nSiobhan Richards joined the Mukwege Foundation in 2018 as a fundraising officer\, responsible for institutional fundraising with foundations\, governments and multilateral organisations. She has many years experience of both fundraising and grant-making gained in the UK and the Netherlands. Her diverse experience includes public-facing roles as a trainer and teacher\, managing partnerships and networks\, and capacity building in the non-profit sector. Prior to her work for the Mukwege Foundation she worked for the Heritage Lottery Fund in the UK as a development officer and grants manager\, and as a freelance entrepreneur in the Netherlands. \n\n\n\nJoin us on October 17 (17:00 – 18.30) to hear more about her career journey! \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!
