SUMMARY:Women Delivering Justice: Achieving Gender Parity in the Justice Sector
DESCRIPTION:The equal representation of women in the justice sector is a human right\, guaranteed by the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against and reinforced by the Beijing Platform for Action under the critical areas of concern on Women in Power and Decision-Making and on Human Rights of Women. \n\n\n\nDespite incremental country progress in achieving gender parity in the justice sector\, women continue to encounter overall social\, economic and institutional challenges to their full and effective participation as justice agents. Challenges range from gender stereotypes to sexual harassment\, time poverty\, limited opportunities to career advancement and obstacles to access leadership positions. In some cases\, barriers have been further amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. \n\n\n\nAgainst this background\, this event will highlight the importance of investing in the equal representation of women in the delivery of justice. DESCRIPTION:Slovenia will hold the EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2021. In this context\, two EUKN Policy Labs organised for Slovenia in 2020 unravelled the ‘green’ actions of the Urban Agenda for the EU\, with a focus on Better Regulation. The next EUKN webinar in this Policy Lab series builds on the findings of these two events and develops them further.  \n\n\n\nThe first part of the webinar will explore the urban dimension of the European Green Deal in order to strengthen the linkages with the Urban Agenda for the EU\, positioning the ‘green’ actions in the wider political debate and institutional context.  \n\n\n\nThe second part will build upon the 2020 EUKN Policy Labs for Slovenia and address their key findings\, particularly in the fields of the Circular Economy\, Nature-Based Solutions\, and the Better Regulation strand of the Urban Agenda for the EU. SUMMARY:Webinar: Myanmar\, Hong Kong\, Egypt - From Activism to Strategy?
DESCRIPTION:Three non-violent activists from Hong Kong\, Myanmar and Egypt will share their experiences with non-violent activism and express their insight\, thoughts and questions about how non-violent direct action is connected to peacebuilding and leads to ‘peace writ large.’  \n\n\n\nThe webinar will focus on what peace activism looks like in repressive contexts. Three case studies will show how these peace activists conduct a non-violent direct action and their thoughts of keeping a peaceful movement and what are the lessons for strategic peacebuilding. Lisa Schirch will be a conversant who will frame questions having co-authored the SNAP – Synergizing Nonviolent Action and Peacebuilding – An Action Guide.The peace activists will talk about how peacebuilding and peace activism has been done in various repressive contexts. They will be sharing their own experience on what they are doing in terms of active direct non-violence and what are their questions about strategic non-violence and how it fits in the larger movement of peacebuilding and building of peaceful societies.The conversation will reveal the non-violent activist thinking strategically. Does it add up to the extending of peace constituency? It will reflect on who is thinking strategically in the context of Myanmar\, Hong Kong and Egypt. Or is it protective non-violence? How to keep peaceful strategies within the movement and avoid fragmentations? And how does this contribute to the peace constituency? SUMMARY:Symposium: How are novel military technologies changing modern conflicts?
DESCRIPTION:The rapidly growing use of drones and robots\, and data-driven military analysis  will likely have profound impacts on the future of warfare. To better understand the implications of these developments for our armed forces\, military interventions\, and foreign policy\, PAX will host an online symposium with a broad array of experts on Friday\, February 26th at 15:00-17:30 CEST.\n\n\n\nIn recent years\, major developments in military technology have allowed for a rapid growth in the use of un-crewed systems for the detection and clearance of explosives\, surveillance and reconnaissance operations\, as well as the elimination of targets. At the same time\, countries like the Netherlands are increasingly resorting to remote warfare. This type of warfare generally involves a combination of airstrikes\, military training\, the use of militias and special force units\, the sharing of intelligence\, and the forming of alliances with non-state armed groups. \n\n\n\nWhile this shift from “boots on the ground” to countering threats from a distance may appear to bring military advantages\, there is an important need to further explore resulting implications for the protection of civilians and assess its effectiveness for long-term peace and security. Will these developments lower the threshold for the use of force? How do they influence the operations of Dutch military forces and their participation in peacekeeping operations? What are the additional risks faced by Dutch soldiers when other countries or non-state armed groups acquire these technologies?
