The audience will understand how such skills are more and more important to cope with complexity and foster resilience in a time of fast-changing educational needs. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nDaniela Papi-Thornton \n\n\n\nDaniela Papi-Thornton is an educator whose work focuses on systems-led leadership. Daniela has served as a Lecturer at Yale School of Management\, Watson Institute\, and Oxford’s Saïd Business School where she was also the Deputy Director of the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship. Her report and subsequent article\, Tackling Heropreneurship\, have been widely referenced. From that research she designed a tool called the Impact Gaps Canvas\, used at universities around the world. At Oxford she launched educational programming designed to help incorporate systems thinking into social entrepreneurship education\, including Map the System\, a contest now running at ~40 global institutions. Daniela’s work in education design builds upon six years of emerging market entrepreneurial experience in Cambodia\, running a hybrid social enterprise. SUMMARY:Learning from the Beirut Port Explosion Response - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The humanitarian response after the Beirut Blast took place in a complex urban setting. Numerous responders from local organizations\, ad hoc informal initiatives and international humanitarian organizations worked hard to save lives and help victims. Many of the new ad hoc initiatives remained active\, also after international NGOs moved in. \n\n\n\nWhat can we learn from the Beirut Port Explosion response? Was the input and work of local actors recognized and supported adequately by international NGOs and UN Agencies? DESCRIPTION:On February 1\, the Myanmar military staged a coup\, placing civilian leaders including Aung San Suu Kyi in detention\, declaring a state of emergency\, and taking hold of all levels of power. Opposition and resistance to the Myanmar Military Coup have been immediate and widespread. People from all sectors of Myanmar society have been on the streets\, organizing and demonstrating against this military takeover. Repression by the military has intensified\, with the death toll now exceeding 500. Yet the Civil Disobedience Movement continues\, including many in their teens and 20s. \n\n\n\nJoin the voices of the civil movement against the military regime!  \n\n\n\nYou will hear from Khin Ohmar\, human rights practitioner and activist who has been a leader of the movement and tirelessly communicating the situation in Myanmar to the international community. DESCRIPTION:The CPB was created to advise the Hub on developing the community and ensure that the Hub programming is of value to both the community and ecosystem by identifying and creating opportunities to connect and collaborate. After experimenting with this in 2020 we would like to bring it to the next level this year. We will also be inviting new members to constitute a cross section of the community with about 12 people. Hotelschool The Hague students conducted a survey amongst coffee consumers. These goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future – where no one is left behind. In practice\, achieving this goal by 2030 means: taking explicit action to end extreme poverty\, hold back inequalities and fast-track progress for the furthest behind. Enough reasons for Partos to establish the Dutch Platform Leave No One Behind. \n\n\n\nThe Leave No One Behind Platform consists of organisations and actors in the field of development cooperation. They develop\, share and promote knowledge\, innovative solutions and policies that contribute to ending poverty and exclusion. The Platform is planning to meet regularly to discuss several issues related to the topic Leave No One Behind.  \n\n\n\nThe upcoming meeting will take place on April 1st.  \n\n\n\nThe goal of this meeting is for the ​new members of the platform to get to know each other\, ​and for the existing members to re-connect and share information about the current situation in their organisation concerning LNOB. The Biden administration has placed democracy at the heart of its policy agenda; in the words of its March 2021 Interim National Security Strategic Guidance\, “Democracy is essential to meeting all the challenges of our changing world.” Yet democracy is under threat worldwide from populists and rising authoritarian powers. \n\n\n\nStill\, civil societies continue to fight for their rights. In Belarus\, a pro-democracy movement led by teacher-turned-presidential-candidate Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya is bravely protesting the fraudulent August 2020 election\, despite violent repression by the government of Alexander Lukashenko. \n\n\n\nOn March 26\, as part of the seventh annual Justice Stephen Breyer Lecture on International Law\, Foreign Policy at Brookings will host Tsikhanouskaya for a keynote address that examines democracy and human rights in Belarus. Afterwards\, senior fellow and Fritz Stern chair Constanze Stelzenmüller will join Tsikhanouskaya for a conversation on how the United States and Europe should support democracy in Belarus and the surrounding region. DESCRIPTION:Eliminating Discriminatory Laws: Achieving Gender Equality on Paper and in Practice During Challenging Times\n\n\n\nDiscrimination in law has severe repercussion to women’s lived realities – and more so now as the world is facing the impact of COVID-19. Without the protection of the law\, women and girls\, especially those facing intersectional discrimination\, continue to be left behind in accessing and enjoying their human rights. Globally\, over 2.5 billion women and girls are negatively impacted by discriminatory laws.  In many countries\, women are still not guaranteed equal legally treatment with men. There are still legal provisions that prevent married women from registering a business or signing a contract in the same manner as their husbands; or from traveling outside the family home. \n\n\n\nGlobal commitments have underscored the importance of eliminating discriminatory laws and the establishment of strong legal framework on gender equality. The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) as well as the Beijing Platform for Action condemn discrimination against women in all its forms and urge legal protection of the rights of women through constitutions\, laws\, and competent justice institutions. \n\n\n\nThis event will highlight the urgent need to eliminate discriminatory laws across women’s lives\, with heightened focus on gender-based violence. SUMMARY:Webinar: Myanmar\, Hong Kong\, Egypt - From Activism to Strategy?
DESCRIPTION:Three non-violent activists from Hong Kong\, Myanmar and Egypt will share their experiences with non-violent activism and express their insight\, thoughts and questions about how non-violent direct action is connected to peacebuilding and leads to ‘peace writ large.’  \n\n\n\nThe webinar will focus on what peace activism looks like in repressive contexts. Three case studies will show how these peace activists conduct a non-violent direct action and their thoughts of keeping a peaceful movement and what are the lessons for strategic peacebuilding. Lisa Schirch will be a conversant who will frame questions having co-authored the SNAP – Synergizing Nonviolent Action and Peacebuilding – An Action Guide.The peace activists will talk about how peacebuilding and peace activism has been done in various repressive contexts. They will be sharing their own experience on what they are doing in terms of active direct non-violence and what are their questions about strategic non-violence and how it fits in the larger movement of peacebuilding and building of peaceful societies.The conversation will reveal the non-violent activist thinking strategically. Does it add up to the extending of peace constituency? It will reflect on who is thinking strategically in the context of Myanmar\, Hong Kong and Egypt. Or is it protective non-violence? How to keep peaceful strategies within the movement and avoid fragmentations? And how does this contribute to the peace constituency?
