The 2021 Rome Conference will consider the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on SDG 16 as well as the transformative contribution SDG 16 can make in helping to safeguard and accelerate progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It will contribute to the deliberations of the 2021 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF)\, while aligning itself to the vision for the United Nations System and the wider international system in the years to come as mandated by the Declaration on the 75th Anniversary of the Organization. \n\n\n\nThe Conference will help to generate a preliminary assessment of how progress towards SDG 16 has been affected by COVID-19 and the pandemic’s wider implications for the realization of the 2030 Agenda. DESCRIPTION:The UN emphasizes the need to bridge the gap between humanitarian\, development and peace silos and advocates for closer collaboration between the different actors. It calls for shared analysis\, collective priority setting\, as well as joined up planning and programming with the overall aim of reducing humanitarian need\, risk and vulnerability. As part of the communities in which they operate\, businesses have an innate interest to support before\, during and after crises\, often seamlessly moving across humanitarian\, development and peacebuilding responses. This session will discuss how and when do humanitarian\, development and peace practitioners come together with private sector entities to leverage their comparative advantages. It will make a strong case that private sector actors should be encouraged to actively participate in the different elements of the nexus approach. General Dallaire will emphasize the importance of lifelong learning and cross-fertilization of real-life experience and academic knowledge. The presentation is meant for students\, and practitioners and policy makers\, especially those being actively involved in academic (doctoral) research. \n\n\n\nOn Roméo Dallaire\n\n\n\nGeneral Roméo Dallaire is founder of the Dallaire Institute for Children\, Peace\, and Security\, a global partnership with the mission to end the recruitment and use of child soldiers.A celebrated advocate for human rights\, General Dallaire is also a respected author\, government and UN advisor\, and former Canadian Senator. Throughout his distinguished military career\, General Dallaire served most notably as Force Commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda during the 1994 genocide. He continues to bring international attention to situations too-often ignored\, whether the prevention of mass atrocities\, the struggle that he and many other military veterans face with post-traumatic stress disorder\, or the recruitment and use of children as weapons of war.  \n\n\n\nOn ISGA and the FGGA Honours Class\n\n\n\nThe Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) focuses on multidisciplinary research and education within the international scientific field of security studies. But what is the impact of this on the mission of the organization? It is a critical issue for the humanitarian system to address and the stakes are high. In February 2021\, the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) published new Operational Guidance on Data Responsibility in Humanitarian Action This link opens in a new tab. The Operational Guidance\, which is a first\, will ensure concrete steps for data responsibility in all phases of humanitarian action. It is intended to help humanitarian staff\, organizations\, and their partners practice data responsibility in different response contexts. It is the result of an inclusive and consultative process involving more than 250 stakeholders from the humanitarian sector and co-led by the International Organization for Migration (IOM)\, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)\, and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Centre for Humanitarian Data. \n\n\n\nIn this Humanitarian Networks and Partnerships Weeks (HNPW) briefing session\, representatives from the Danish Refugee Council\, IOM\, OCHA\, and UNHCR will present the Operational Guidance and share examples of how it is already being adopted in different response contexts. DESCRIPTION:A Rule of Law Based Approach to Sustainable Economic Recovery for Least Developed Countries: The contribution of ISP/LDCs as a dedicated public-private partnership for investment capacity development in the least developed countries \n\n\n\nThe impact of the global crisis triggered by COVID-19 is being felt most severely by LDCs and by the most vulnerable people within them.  It is becoming critical to develop new solutions to unlock LDCs’ capacity to create an enabling environment to attract FDI and access the resource flows required to finance their recovery efforts. Against the assessment by the LDCs of the path to their socio-economic recovery in preparation for the 2022 DOHA Conference\, this Side Event will review the initial experience in implementing IDLO’s Investment Support Programme for the Least Developed Countries (ISP/LDCs)—a dedicated public-private partnership geared to supporting LDCs in managing and sustaining FDI. Discussions will focus on the distinctive features of the Programme and their contribution to innovation and enhanced impact in the international effort to support LDCs’ capacity development and help level the playing field in investment negotiations and the settlement of commercial disputes. \n\n\n\nThe Side Event focuses on IDLO’s Investment Support Programme for Least Developed Countries (ISP/LDCs) This link opens in a new tab as a public-private partnership that seeks to make distinctive contribution to the international efforts to help accelerate LDCs’ recovery from COVID-19 and to advance their sustainable development goals. \n\n\n\nISP/LDCs provides\, at no cost to beneficiaries\, legal and technical advice and assistance\, as well as complementary capacity-building\, to both governments and eligible private sector entities in LDCs on investment-related matters\, including investment negotiations and dispute settlements. Such assistance is provided by harnessing the services of lawyers and experts who provide support to the beneficiaries on a “pro bono” or reduced fee basis. \n\n\n\nISP/LDCs was jointly designed by the UN Office of the High Representative for Least Developed Countries\, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States and IDLO\, with support from the Government of Italy. It became fully operational in 2019\, thanks to funding from the European Union and a contribution from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development. Since then\, the Programme has delivered investment-related technical support to a wide range of countries. From these 425 submissions\, 30 finalists have been selected to take part in an online regional showcase event. \n\n\n\nThis event will feature an assessment of the efforts underway in countries in Europe\, North America and Central Asia to “build back better” from the challenges posed by COVID-19. This portion of the program will be led by WJP’s partners for the region\, the Municipality of The Hague and The Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law\, and will focus on four areas—access to justice for all\, accountable governance\, fundamental rights and non-discrimination\, and anti-corruption and open government.  \n\n\n\nThe event will also give the finalists from the region an opportunity to present their projects and share key insights into their objectives and impact as a basis to select the six winners of the World Justice Challenge 2021. Daniela has served as a Lecturer at Yale School of Management\, Watson Institute\, and Oxford’s Saïd Business School where she was also the Deputy Director of the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship. Her report and subsequent article\, Tackling Heropreneurship\, have been widely referenced. From that research she designed a tool called the Impact Gaps Canvas\, used at universities around the world. At Oxford she launched educational programming designed to help incorporate systems thinking into social entrepreneurship education\, including Map the System\, a contest now running at ~40 global institutions. Daniela’s work in education design builds upon six years of emerging market entrepreneurial experience in Cambodia\, running a hybrid social enterprise. SUMMARY:Learning from the Beirut Port Explosion Response - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The humanitarian response after the Beirut Blast took place in a complex urban setting. Numerous responders from local organizations\, ad hoc informal initiatives and international humanitarian organizations worked hard to save lives and help victims. Many of the new ad hoc initiatives remained active\, also after international NGOs moved in. \n\n\n\nWhat can we learn from the Beirut Port Explosion response? Was the input and work of local actors recognized and supported adequately by international NGOs and UN Agencies? What role did the various actors play in the ‘first phase’ of the response and how can international NGOs and agencies align with local CSOs\, informal networks and initiatives more effectively? \n\n\n\nThe learnings on collaboration\, coordination\, and community engagement will contribute to better preparedness of humanitarian actors for humanitarian responses in an urban setting. \n\n\n\nDuring the session local organizations from Beirut will share preliminary learnings\, as will representatives of international NGOs. \n\n\n\nIntroductions:\n\n\n\nSetting the scene – A growing awareness on the specifics of an urban response by Prof. Thea Hilhorst\, Erasmus University.Preliminary findings of the local actors by the Lebanon Humanitarian and Development NGOs Forum (LDFH) and partners.Preliminary findings international NGOs by the Lebanon Humanitarian INGO Forum (LHIF) and partners.\n\n\n\nAfter the introduction a panel with the opening speakers and representatives of local actors\, Save the Children International\, and the Dutch Relief Alliance will discuss how these learnings could lead to a better preparedness of humanitarian actors in an urban setting.The working session will be facilitated as a webinar: attendees to the session are invited to participate to the panel discussion via the chat and Q&A-box. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

DESCRIPTION:On February 1\, the Myanmar military staged a coup\, placing civilian leaders including Aung San Suu Kyi in detention\, declaring a state of emergency\, and taking hold of all levels of power. Opposition and resistance to the Myanmar Military Coup have been immediate and widespread. People from all sectors of Myanmar society have been on the streets\, organizing and demonstrating against this military takeover. Repression by the military has intensified\, with the death toll now exceeding 500. Yet the Civil Disobedience Movement continues\, including many in their teens and 20s. \n\n\n\nJoin the voices of the civil movement against the military regime!  \n\n\n\nYou will hear from Khin Ohmar\, human rights practitioner and activist who has been a leader of the movement and tirelessly communicating the situation in Myanmar to the international community. DESCRIPTION:The CPB was created to advise the Hub on developing the community and ensure that the Hub programming is of value to both the community and ecosystem by identifying and creating opportunities to connect and collaborate. After experimenting with this in 2020 we would like to bring it to the next level this year. We will also be inviting new members to constitute a cross section of the community with about 12 people. Joining the CPB is a commitment to join 7-8 meetings per year. \n\n\n\nSome of the key activities for this year will include: \n\n\n\nPut to practice the seasonal quarterly theme concept for Hub programming that we developed together last year Develop a cornerstone event format to foster connection and collaboration within the Hague ecosystem on specific themes Keep developing member peer to peer groups Continue developing the Hub as an SDG House (first project: SDG Traineeship programme) Co-create\, identify and leverage ad hoc programming and event opportunities for the community\n\n\n\nOther potential activities on the horizon include the development of the Hub as a public debating platform\, activities to boost the international reputation of the Hague ecosystem\, and further cultivate the Hub as hub for development and access to talent. \n\n\n\nPlease send an email to programming@humanityhub.net if you would like to attend. \n\n\n\nNote: The Community Programming board is set\, but members can join the meetings as guests.

Hotelschool The Hague students conducted a survey amongst coffee consumers.
