In the research Tim identified a ‘justice gap’. What justice problems do people run into and does one get the solutions that are needed? \n\n\n\nTim studied international law in The Hague and Maastricht. DESCRIPTION:Graag nodigen Building Change\, Global Compact Network Nederland\, MVO Nederland\, Partos en SDG Nederland in samenwerking met de Rijksoverheid je uit voor de bijeenkomst ‘Route 2030: Hoe kunnen we versnellen om de SDG’s te behalen?’ op woensdagochtend 19 mei. Tijdens deze bijeenkomst worden in het kader van Verantwoordingsdag twee rapportages gepresenteerd: De ‘Monitor Brede Welvaart en Sustainable Development Goals 2021’ van het CBS en de vijfde Nederlandse SDG rapportage ‘Nederland Ontwikkelt Duurzaam’ van de Rijksoverheid. \n\n\n\nDe lancering van deze rapportages vormt een mooie aanleiding om te bespreken hoe het ervoor staat met de uitvoering van de SDG’s in en door Nederland. En nog belangrijker: hoe we met elkaar en met de overheid kunnen versnellen om de doelen in 2030 te behalen.  \n\n\n\nNa de presentaties van de twee rapportages vindt een dialoog plaats tussen vertegenwoordigers uit het bedrijfsleven\, van NGO’s\, financiële sector\, jongerenorganisaties én Tweede Kamerleden over thema’s waar we in Nederland extra stappen gaan zetten met de verschillende sectoren\, te weten: welke extra stappen gaan de verschillende sectoren met elkaar zetten om de SDG’s te behalen en wat moet de overheid doen om dit proces te versnellen?  \n\n\n\nDoel van de bijeenkomst is om inzicht krijgen in de doelen waar we op achterlopen (mede gezien COVID-19) en wat er nodig is om te versnellen. DESCRIPTION:The average level of peacefulness deteriorated for the ninth time in twelve years This link opens in a new tab. The nature of conflict is transforming across the world. Yet the information space is changing so quickly that it threatens to leave many early warning/early action (EWEA) efforts behind. Availability of big data\, including easy access to what people say and do online\, combined with advanced computational capacity\, opens a potential for the EWEA community to use the momentum and advance their field further. We believe that an important step in achieving this goal is exchanging the lessons and latest efforts transparently between actors and regions. With this goal\, we are facilitating this workshop as an open space for this exchange to happen. Join us! \n\n\n\nObjectives \n\n\n\nThe overall objective is to facilitate peer-to-peer exchange on best practices in EWEA. The event will bring together at the international level (for the first time) national and international actors working on early warning/early action to share lessons learned on effective models\, practices\, and methods to influence decision making and enable conflict prevention on the ground. It will also help to establish networks and create opportunities for capacity building with data visualization tools. Substantively\, the conference will shed the light on advanced techniques with the greatest potential to revolutionize the field. \n\n\n\nFormat \n\n\n\nThis conference will create an online space across different time zones and gather voices around the world to discuss the latest developments in EWEA. DESCRIPTION:Stories have the potential to be extremely effective. They have the power to alter how we perceive our surroundings\, interact with one another\, and persuade us. The viewer is able to shift perspectives and challenge their own way of thinking by identifying with the characters. Because of this ability to empathize with story characters\, story is one of the most powerful ways to change belief and behavior. When it comes to changing people’s minds about contentious political or social issues\, stories have been shown to be the most effective.This session will explore how you can tell better stories to reach your audience and shift them through emotion. \n\n\n\nThe Media Development Collective is devoted to the transformative power of stories. We recognize (digital) media’s potential as a new frontier for knowledge transfer and attitude shaping. We believe in the power of collectives; “people working together to effect change.” The Media Development Collective is a new\, collaborative consultancy and training organization focused on the media\, civil society\, and for-good sectors. We have years of hands-on experience in the media and international development sectors\, and we have worked in over 30 countries around the world. We provide media training\, coaching\, and assistance with the implementation of media campaigns and programs. Professionals and subject matter experts in our network\, as well as those who have taken part in our organizational trainings and collaborative programs\, are part of our “collective.” We work in the traditional media development space as well as the media for development space. We foster good journalism and assist those who fill journalism’s gaps in contexts where it is restricted. We create interactive trainings and work with partners to build behavior change campaigns. Our “media for” approach aims to mobilize civil society by training them in strategic communications – which help amplify their messages by using the right message\, in the right channel\, at the right time. \n\n\n\nSession Leads\n\n\n\nJanet H. Anderson works a journalist and podcaster on a wide range of human rights issues. She also trains NGOs and campaigners in engagement and persuasive storytelling for impact. For the past 5 years Janet has lead innovative Social Change Campaigning courses globally. Trained by the BBC\, she has worked for a wide range of media development NGOs\, broadcasters and content producers across Europe and Africa.  \n\n\n\nBrandon Oelofse is the founder of Media Development Collective\, a training\, and consultancy company focused on strategic communications for the civil society sector. He’s an award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker and his work has been represented at numerous festivals\, including the Cannes festival and the Oscar. DESCRIPTION:Applying humanitarian standards in urban settings has been a challenge for a long time. The recent blast in the harbor of Beirut is yet another example. The urban context has consequences for the disaster management: communities are fluid and complex\, with perhaps hidden groups (refugees\, IDPs)\, great socio-economic differences and probably a big amount of first responders\, self-organization and self-recovery. \n\n\n\nTrainer: Aninia Nadig\, Policy and Practice Manager of Sphere. \n\n\n\nStarting point for this training will be the recently updated guide ‘Using the Sphere Standards in Urban Settings’\, which can be found here. \n\n\n\nPrimary target groups for the training are  professionals working in needs assessment\, programme design and management of humanitarian response (head quarters and country offices). Since September 1998\, PGA progressively launched a Campaign for the Universality and Effectiveness of System of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).  The Campaign intends to promote a universal culture of upholding the Rule of Law\, human rights and human dignity by fighting impunity for the commission of genocide\, war crimes\, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression\, the most serious crimes of concern to the international community as a whole. These efforts are in line with UN Sustainable Development Goal 16: “To promote just\, peaceful and inclusive societies”\, particularly Target 16.3 which refers to promoting the rule of law at the national and international levels and ensure equal access to justice for all.  To adapt the campaign’s efforts to the needs of specific countries\, group of countries or regions\, the PGA Secretariat works with members of parliament at national\, regional and international level  in approximately 40 target countries. \n\n\n\nWhat to expect \n\n\n\nThe Open House event will last about 45 minutes with an overview of the organization and a focus on specific projects. SUMMARY:SDG 16 CONFERENCE 2021 : Transforming Governance for a more Peaceful\, Just\, and Inclusive Future
DESCRIPTION:Conference summary \n\n\n\nBuilding on the outcomes of the first SDG 16 Conference This link opens in a new tab held in Rome\, Italy\, in May 2019\, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA)\, the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) and the Government of Italy are organizing a second SDG 16 Conference. The 2021 Rome Conference will consider the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on SDG 16 as well as the transformative contribution SDG 16 can make in helping to safeguard and accelerate progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It will contribute to the deliberations of the 2021 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF)\, while aligning itself to the vision for the United Nations System and the wider international system in the years to come as mandated by the Declaration on the 75th Anniversary of the Organization. \n\n\n\nThe Conference will help to generate a preliminary assessment of how progress towards SDG 16 has been affected by COVID-19 and the pandemic’s wider implications for the realization of the 2030 Agenda. It will highlight the importance of policy orientations embodied in SDG 16 to efforts to build resilience to shocks and provide a roadmap for a more just\, inclusive and equitable recovery required to sustain peace and development and deliver on Decade of Action to deliver the Global Goals. \n\n\n\n\nLIVESTREAM

DESCRIPTION:The world is facing fundamental and interrelated systemic challenges\, including the COVID-19 pandemic as well as environmental and social crises and issues. Those issues cannot be solved by business as usual. Fortunately\, there is a framework that can help navigate efforts to deal with them: the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Right now\, the SDGs are the best agenda available to share ambitions and measure progress towards the achievement of a large number of common goals. \n\n\n\nThe private sector’s active involvement is vital in this ambition. But progress is too slow – not because of a lack of intentions\, but because of the serious gap in developing advanced strategies in realising the SDGs. SUMMARY:Private sector engagement in humanitarian-development-peace collaboration
DESCRIPTION:The UN emphasizes the need to bridge the gap between humanitarian\, development and peace silos and advocates for closer collaboration between the different actors. It calls for shared analysis\, collective priority setting\, as well as joined up planning and programming with the overall aim of reducing humanitarian need\, risk and vulnerability. As part of the communities in which they operate\, businesses have an innate interest to support before\, during and after crises\, often seamlessly moving across humanitarian\, development and peacebuilding responses. This session will discuss how and when do humanitarian\, development and peace practitioners come together with private sector entities to leverage their comparative advantages. It will make a strong case that private sector actors should be encouraged to actively participate in the different elements of the nexus approach. Through an interactive panel discussion\, speakers will highlight concrete examples of how strengthened collaboration and coordination with and among the private sector have benefitted vulnerable people. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

DESCRIPTION:Leiden University’s Institute for Security and Global Affairs and Dual PhD Centre jointly organize an online lecture by Cleveringa ProfessorGeneral Roméo Dallaire on “How a better world is possible”: Cooperation between Science and Practice. \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, General Dallaire will reflect on the complexities of international governance and leadership on ‘wicked problems’ in the human security realm and share his personal lessons from his career and provide recommendations for different generations of scholars and practitioners\, from students to active policy makers. General Dallaire will emphasize the importance of lifelong learning and cross-fertilization of real-life experience and academic knowledge. The presentation is meant for students\, and practitioners and policy makers\, especially those being actively involved in academic (doctoral) research. \n\n\n\nOn Roméo Dallaire\n\n\n\nGeneral Roméo Dallaire is founder of the Dallaire Institute for Children\, Peace\, and Security\, a global partnership with the mission to end the recruitment and use of child soldiers.A celebrated advocate for human rights\, General Dallaire is also a respected author\, government and UN advisor\, and former Canadian Senator. Throughout his distinguished military career\, General Dallaire served most notably as Force Commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda during the 1994 genocide. He continues to bring international attention to situations too-often ignored\, whether the prevention of mass atrocities\, the struggle that he and many other military veterans face with post-traumatic stress disorder\, or the recruitment and use of children as weapons of war.  \n\n\n\nOn ISGA and the FGGA Honours Class\n\n\n\nThe Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) focuses on multidisciplinary research and education within the international scientific field of security studies. The Institute analyses and studies issues in a coherent way from their local transnational\, and global impact. ISGA operates from The Hague\, the third major city of the Netherlands\, centre of national governance and International City of Peace\, Justice and Security. ISGA runs the annual Honours Class on “A better world is possible” – allowing the best 25 students across all faculties to interact with thought leaders and security practitioners in order to come up with innovative policy solutions.  \n\n\n\nOn Dual PhD Centre\n\n\n\nThe Dual PhD Centre offers a Dual PhD programme that enables professionals to combine work and PhD research.
