DESCRIPTION:About the SDG Action Day \n\n\n\nThe SDG Action Day is a yearly event that takes place on or around September 25\, which is the birthday of the SDGs – making it the Dutch event on the Sustainable Development Goals. The aim is to give participants insight into where we are standing with the SDGs\, which goals still require more attention\, and how we can take steps to finally meet these goals.   \n\n\n\nOn the 25th of September\, local partners of SDG the Netherlands will organise activities all around the Netherlands. The Hague Humanity Hub\, being one of the SDG Houses\, will also participate by creating a platform to show how our community members are contributing to the SDGs. Our event: ‘from the Netherlands with love’ will take place in the afternoon\, from 14:00-15:30! \n\n\n\nSDG Action Day at The Hague Humanity Hub\n\n\n\nThe Hub has published an awesome SDG community map This link opens in a new tab showcasing the wide variety of SDGs our vibrant community is working on! As you can see this map is a great starting point for this event and we selected the 4 SDG’s that our community members are contributing most to:  \n\n\n\nSDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.SDG 16: Peace\, justice and strong institutions. SDG 17: Partnerships for the goals.\n\n\n\nThis SDG Action Day will be a very fun and informal event\, with a lot of room for interaction and\, of course\, actions! The participating organisations will give presentations on specific topics/problems related to the SDGs that they are struggling with or could use some advice on. As such\, you will have an advisory role and thus a real ‘action‘ in the SDG Action Day! SUMMARY:Art of Peace - Garden Walk
DESCRIPTION:Poetry\, music and true stories about individuals who have dedicated their lives to peace and freedom\, all these ingredients come together in “Art of Peace.” This artistic evening walk will take place in the garden of the Peace Palace from 23 to 26 September 2021. Participants will walk through an attractively lit garden\, listen to a story or a poem via an audio tour and enjoy live music. “Art of Peace” not only connects different artistic elements\, but also the history of the UN\, freedom and the Peace Palace. \n\n\n\n\n\nGarden tour ‘Art of Peace’\n\n\n\nAt the beginning of the route\, visitors meet the Goddess of Peace Irene who addresses them through the art of spoken word. In addition to historical characters and works of art\, fragments from the history of the UN will also be featured. For example\, the participants are introduced to the Nobel Prize laureate Dag Hammarskjold\, who was Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953 to 196. Not only during the Suez Canal crisis he advocated for dialogue and de-escalation.  \n\n\n\nThe repercussions of the Second World War and the history of the Peace Palace are illustrated by the story of Max Chotzen. He worked as a librarian in the Peace Palace and at the same time was active in the Dutch resistance. Together with colleagues\, he printed illegal newspapers on a stencil machine hidden in the basement of the palace. \n\n\n\nThese and various other stories and art interventions about solidarity\, hope\, peace and freedom are experienced by visitors as they stroll through the garden. \n\n\n\nYou can find more information here! Each tour will take place on Sunday September 19 starting at 10:00\, 11:30\, 13:00 and will last approximately 1 hour. \n\n\n\nDuring the small-scale Walking Tours\, participants can meet some of the people who work making the concepts of justice and peace a reality in The Hague. Together with trained volunteers from Volunteer The Hague\, Humanity Hub is organizing four different walking tours in different parts of the city. DESCRIPTION:After the successful sessions on Community-Led Development and Human-Centered Design last year\, which we organised in collaboration with Butterfly Works\, The Hunger Project and The Movement for Community-Led Development\, the fourth session focuses on tools and localisation tactics for cross-cultural co-creation. This session\, on September 16th 2021 from 15.30-17.00\, will be hosted by Butterfly Works. \n\n\n\nThis session will explore a tension we often experience: how to ensure localisation and community-led programming while scaling your successful interventions. \n\n\n\nAfter having invested in an innovative approach\, a well-designed intervention or a fully developed digital product\, organisations look for scaling and expansion. They want to ensure the time and money invested can be translated into results. DESCRIPTION:The Film:\n\n\n\n“BLIND TRUST: Leaders & Followers in Times of Crisis” is about the work of Vamik Volkan who grew up as an ethnic minority on the divided island of Cyprus\, home for two warring ethnic groups – the Turks and Greek. After training to be a psychiatrist in Turkey Volkan founded the “Center for the Study of Mind & Human Interaction” at the University of Virginia and\, over the next four decades\, brought enemy groups together for dialogue in traumatized regions around the globe. Based on his fieldwork\, he has created a new vocabulary for understanding group emotion\, one based on shared trauma\, its transmission across generations\, and the task of collective mourning. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us! Hear first-hand experiences of young peace-builders from areas around the world and how they reflect on the work of Dr. Volkan from their youth perspective. \n\n\n\nOn September 9 at 6 pm CET\, you can join the live panel discussion and engage in a Q&A via Zoom. Established in 2014\, YPI empowers youth to be partners in peace and to be recognized as such. SUMMARY:A Rule of Law Approach to Accelerating Climate Action
DESCRIPTION:Climate change and the loss of biodiversity are exacerbating inequality\, hampering sustainable development\, and threatening the enjoyment and exercise of human rights worldwide.  While the growing climate crisis will affect all of us\, the consequences will be felt differently and disproportionately by women and girls\, vulnerable groups\, and future generations. \n\n\n\nThe rule of law is an important tool in achieving effective climate action and facilitating the realisation of SDG 13. A rule of law approach to climate action\, in line with Sustainable Development Goals 13 and 16\, can help accelerate transformative\, sustainable\, and low-carbon development. Fair\, effective and equitable legal frameworks can pave the way to resilience and adaptation to climate change. \n\n\n\nThe rule of law can also empower communities to take the lead in climate action\, helping to ensure that champions for climate action have a voice in setting climate and biodiversity-related policies that help reduce inequalities and eliminate climate-related drivers of conflict. \n\n\n\nOccurring in the run-up to 26th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change\, the event will explore the links between Sustainable Development Goals 13 and 16 and highlight the ways in which the rule of law can accelerate fair\, inclusive and just climate action to help achieve the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement. \n\n\n\nAmong the event’s panel of experts who will present innovative approaches to sustainable development to address climate change and its negative impacts are: UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment Dr David R. Boyd; UNFCCC Adaptation Committee Member and Chief Negotiator for Chile’s COP-25 Presidency Julio Cordano; World Resource Institute’s Director of Climate Negotiations Yamide Dagnet; Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development Policy Analyst Luigi di Marco; UNFCCC LDC Group National Focal Point for Sudan’s High Council of Environment and Natural Resources Hana Hamadalla Mohamed; University of Nairobi School of Law Professor Patricia Kameri-Mbote; and IFAD’s Director of the Environment\, Climate\, Gender\, Youth\, Nutrition and Social Inclusion Division Jyotsna Puri. \n\n\n\nAll4Climate – Italy 2021 is a series of events taking place in Italy this year. SUMMARY:How Europe’s (anti-)migration policies are fuelling a humanitarian crisis
DESCRIPTION:On the 9th of September\, IHSA and KUNO present key humanitarian concerns highlighted in a special journal issue on ‘Politics\, humanitarianism and migration to Europe’. \n\n\n\nWhen some one million people crossed the Mediterranean in the course of 2015 to seek refuge\, European countries called it a crisis. Yet the real crisis was created by European immigration and asylum policies and by the challenges they posed for aid providers. The Covid-19 pandemic has worsened the violence experienced by people seeking safety in countries such as Italy\, Greece\, France\, Belgium\, Germany\, Norway\, and the UK. \n\n\n\nPolicies such as strengthening border controls\, the externalisation of borders\, and a focus on smuggling and trafficking rather than on the causes of forced migration all result in humanitarian crisis. The new reality affects humanitarian organizations\, including the criminalisation of assistance provision\, as well as the rise in resistance and activism by newly created volunteer groups. \n\n\n\nThe International Humanitarian Studies Association (IHSA)recently published a special issue of International Migration journal\, based on contributions to their conference in The Hague (2018). Sadly\, the humanitarian concerns arising from migration to Europe are still very relevant today. Adding to the challenge are the political and institutional contexts of the country. Leading international experts and practitioners will provide unique insights into international best practices and water governance tools. DESCRIPTION:The CPB was created to advise the Hub on developing the community and ensure that the Hub programming is of value to both the community and ecosystem by identifying and creating opportunities to connect and collaborate. After experimenting with this in 2020 we would like to bring it to the next level this year. We will also be inviting new members to constitute a cross section of the community with about 12 people. Joining the CPB is a commitment to join 7-8 meetings per year. \n\n\n\nSome of the key activities for this year will include: \n\n\n\nPut to practice the seasonal quarterly theme concept for Hub programming that we developed together last year Develop a cornerstone event format to foster connection and collaboration within the Hague ecosystem on specific themes Keep developing member peer to peer groups Continue developing the Hub as an SDG House (first project: SDG Traineeship programme) Co-create\, identify and leverage ad hoc programming and event opportunities for the community\n\n\n\nOther potential activities on the horizon include the development of the Hub as a public debating platform\, activities to boost the international reputation of the Hague ecosystem\, and further cultivate the Hub as hub for development and access to talent. \n\n\n\nPlease send an email to programming@humanityhub.net if you would like to attend. \n\n\n\nNote: The Community Programming board is set\, but members can join the meetings as guests.

As states’ resources have been stretched by the global COVID-19 pandemic\, terrorist organisations have sought to exploit the reduced public attention on their activities to strengthen their base and fuel divisions. In North America\, Western Europe and Oceania\, the threat of far-right political terrorism has been steadily rising\, with an increase in far-right incidents of 250 percent between 2014-2019 (Global Terrorism Index 2020). \n\n\n\nAlthough ISIL has been less active\, 27 countries in the Middle East and North Africa recorded an attack by ISIL or by its affiliate groups\, with Sub-Saharan Africa having been hit the hardest. Within the EU\, ten people died and 27 were injured following terrorist attacks\, and more than a thousand individuals were arrested on suspicion of terrorism-related offences. A further 119 ‘foiled\, failed and completed’ terrorist attacks were reported by 13 EU member states (Europol). \n\n\n\nAcross the world\, extremist and terrorist activities have continuously triggered an increase in security-related laws and measures. To prevent terrorism as early as possible\, states have introduced limitations on freedom of speech\, curbs on financial and other support and have resorted to revoking nationalities. \n\n\n\nHow proportionate and legitimate are these measures? DESCRIPTION:The European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI) and the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) EADI General Conference will take place entirely online. \n\n\n\nEven in this virtual format\, the conference will be a very special event. It will benefit from the virtual hospitality of ISS\, one of Europe’s oldest and largest centres for research and education in the field of development studies. \n\n\n\nThe conference will be combined with the Development Dialogue\, the annual European conference of PhD candidates working in development studies. \n\n\n\nAbout the conference\n\n\n\nThe central theme of the conference is ‘Solidarity\, Peace and Social Justice’. Together\, these three concepts represent the organization’s aspirations for approaches to global development that address inequality\, poverty and political marginalization\, also in connection with climate change and other environmental threats.  \n\n\n\nSolidarity is essential for any process of social change. Based on mutually shared interests and human values\, solidarity can be extremely powerful yet can also be easily undermined in an era of fake news and (electronically) manipulated elections.  \n\n\n\nPeace and social justice are similarly important values in (as well as aspired outcomes of) struggles or transformation processes in which solidarity is key. \n\n\n\nThe conference will be hosted by the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS)\, one of Europe’s oldest and largest centres for research and education in the field of development studies. DESCRIPTION:The CPB was created to advise the Hub on developing the community and ensure that the Hub programming is of value to both the community and ecosystem by identifying and creating opportunities to connect and collaborate. After experimenting with this in 2020 we would like to bring it to the next level this year. We will also be inviting new members to constitute a cross section of the community with about 12 people. Joining the CPB is a commitment to join 7-8 meetings per year. \n\n\n\nSome of the key activities for this year will include: \n\n\n\nPut to practice the seasonal quarterly theme concept for Hub programming that we developed together last year Develop a cornerstone event format to foster connection and collaboration within the Hague ecosystem on specific themes Keep developing member peer to peer groups Continue developing the Hub as an SDG House (first project: SDG Traineeship programme) Co-create\, identify and leverage ad hoc programming and event opportunities for the community\n\n\n\nOther potential activities on the horizon include the development of the Hub as a public debating platform\, activities to boost the international reputation of the Hague ecosystem\, and further cultivate the Hub as hub for development and access to talent. \n\n\n\nPlease send an email to programming@humanityhub.net if you would like to attend. \n\n\n\nNote: The Community Programming board is set\, but members can join the meetings as guests.
