SUMMARY:Anticipating and responding to disasters
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a masterclass on Anticipatory Action\, organised by KUNO\, the University of Twente (UT)/ITC\, the Hague Humanitarian Studies Centre-ISS\, the Netherlands Red Cross\, and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. \n  \nAbout the masterclass\nThis masterclass aims to raise awareness and build knowledge on the motivations for\, as well as on the how of anticipatory action (in more detail). It also seeks to facilitate critical reflection and explore its limitations. Through interactive sessions\, participants will acquire a deeper\, hands-on understanding of the practice of anticipatory action. The masterclass is designed for humanitarian practitioners\, policy makers\, academics and students. \n  \nAnticipatory action\nAnticipatory action refers to actions taken to reduce the humanitarian impacts of a forecast hazard before it occurs\, or before its most acute impacts are felt. The decision to act is based on a forecast\, or collective risk analysis\, of when\, where and how the event will unfold (IFRC 2020). It is a type of preemptive intervention informed by early warnings; for example\, distributing cash transfers to farmers ahead of a predicted drought. It has been used to reduce the impacts of crises by triggering early actions before disasters unfold. It is used as an extension of humanitarian aid. \nAnticipatory action is gaining increasing attention\, also within the humanitarian field\, and sees a rise in funding\, for example\, in the Netherlands and Germany. Anticipatory action started with small pilots in 2016. Since then\, over 154 active frameworks have been developed in 48 countries\, with at least 285 UN/Red Cross and NGOs involved and several donors. \n  \nPreliminary programme & speakers\nTime: 13:00-13:45.\nPlenary\nWelcome and opening by Carla Jonkers\, Manager Disaster Preparedness & Response Unit\, Netherlands Red Cross.\nPresentation on anticipatory action\, and on the work the Red Cross does in that context by Marc van Homberg\, Professor Data4Disaster Resilience (UT/ITC) and Scientific Lead at 510 Global of the Red Cross & Eefje Hendriks\, Assistant Professor of Disaster Resilience and Humanitarian Assistance (UT). \n13:45-14:30\nPlenary\nRound table discussion with 3 humanitarian organisations (tbc) on their anticipatory action work\, a case study and challenges on the ground. \n  \n14:30 – 15:00\nBreak \n  \n15:00 – 16:15\nBreakout groups\nBreak up into smaller groups for group activities guided by experts\, to work towards resolving certain challenges in AA response. SUMMARY:#DemocracyDrinks | Defending Democracy in Georgia: Where to from here?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this year’s last #DemocracyDrinks\, on November 13\, to reflect on Georgia’s fight for democracy and avenues for moving forward.\nIt has already been a year since the Georgian people began courageously protesting the results of an unfair election and the ruling party’s decision to halt the country’s path toward the European Union. In response\, the government has cracked down on protesters\, filled prisons with political opponents\, and sought to silence civil society and independent media – and is now moving to ban opposition parties. \n  \nThe EU – including the Netherlands – has condemned these actions\, freezing parts of Georgia’s EU accession process and reconsidering its cooperation programmes. Yet many argue that more decisive action is needed to support Georgia’s pro-democracy movement. \n  \nJoin us for the next edition of #DemocracyDrinks on 13 November\, where we will reflect on what has happened so far\, and ask experts from and on Georgia what can be done to support the pro-democracy movement moving forward. The panel will be moderated by Amy Eaglestone (Leiden University)\, and we will hear insights from Dinara Gagoshidze (Netherlands Helsinki Committee) and Simona Ognenovska (European Centre for Not-for-Profit Law). \n  \n	Register here! This link opens in a new tab\n	\n  \nWhat are the Democracy Drinks?\n#DemocracyDrinks The Hague brings together democracy advocates\, thinkers and enthusiasts at our monthly informal networking events. It is a great way of making new contacts and catching up with people you know; for testing ideas and planning actions; for moral support and inspiration. Feel free to invite friends and colleagues that work on or are interested in defending values like democracy\, rule of law\, human rights… Come along and you will be made welcome! \n  \nThis event series is a collaboration between the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC) and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH). \n  \n#DemocracyDrinks were launched in 2018 by Defend Democracy Executive Director Alice Stollmeyer. Over time\, #DemocracyDrinks have expanded their reach and have been organized in Aarhus\, Berlin\, Brussels\, Budapest\, Copenhagen\, Kathmandu\, Montreal\, The Hague and Washington DC\, and soon also in other cities. The events attract a lively mixture of people from NGOs\, international institutions\, think tanks\, national governments and representations\, academia\, public affairs consultancies\, social businesses and other active citizens. \n  \n\nPhotos – yes or no? \nPlease note that during Democracy Drinks a photographer and/or videographer will be present to take pictures\, for use by the #DemocracyDrinks partners in future marketing efforts. These can include social media usage\, blog posts\, as general marketing material\, and to market future events and initiatives. \nBy attending #DemocracyDrinks you give permission for your image to be used to promote The Hague Humanity Hub\, Netherlands Helsinki Committee\, and Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy in the future. SUMMARY:[Roundtable] Implications of the 2024 ICJ’s Advisory Opinion on Israel’s occupation of Palestine: The Dutch context
DESCRIPTION:It has now been over a year since the International Court of Justice (ICJ) rendered its much-awaited Advisory Opinion (AO) on Israel’s occupation of Palestine. Therein\, the Court made it abundantly clear that Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) is unlawful and that it must end and that Israel’s practices and policies in the OPT violate fundamental rules and principles of international law\, including the right to self-determination\, rules on the use of force\, human rights law and international humanitarian law. \n  \nAt the same time\, the Court also addressed the international law obligations of third States in relation to Israel’s unlawful acts in the OPT. It found that third States and other international actors must not recognize as legal the situation arising from the unlawful presence of Israel in the OPT\, they must not render aid or assistance in maintaining it and they must co-operate to bring the illegal situation to an end. What do these duties entail for the EU’s (and its MS’) relations with Israel – particularly in light of the Union’s constitutional commitment to ‘the strict observance of international law’ (Art. 3(5) TEU)? \n  \nIn a recent Expert Legal Opinion on the Implications for the EU of the 2024 ICJ AO commissioned by several MEPs\, the authors stress that EU’s ongoing review of Israel’s compliance with Art. 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement must take into account the findings of serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law in the ICJ AO. \n  \nIn this light\, the present roundtable aims to bring together a number of international and EU law experts and practitioners as well as national and EU officials with a view to providing legal and practical insights on this important and timely topic that lies in the interface of international\, EU and national law. \n  \nSpeakers:\n\nProf. Gleider Hernadez (KU Leuven)\nProf. Ramses Wessel (University of Groningen)\nProf. Janne Nijman (UvA\, Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies\, Geneva)\n\nThe event will be chaired by Eva Kassoti – researcher at the Asser Insitute \n  \n	Register now This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Growing beyond this moment: The closing of the Partos DEI and anti-racism trajectories
DESCRIPTION:Closing a chapter\nOver the past three years Partos has facilitated the DEI trajectory\, a series of powerful sessions centring on reflection\, dialogue\, and action around DEI and anti-racism. Together\, we have explored how exclusion and racism manifest within our organisations\, and how we can take intentional\, collective steps to dismantle them. \n  \nYears after the global outcry for justice and equity (#BLM\, #metoo)\, society shows us that these values are easily broken and under pressure. The DEI trajectory proofs that DEI\, when justice-led and part of a broader strategy\, is still a way to practice commitment to equity in a world where racism\, sexism\, ableism\, discrimination\, xenophobia and trans & homophobia is still imminent. \n  \nClosing Community Event\nAs this shared journey comes to a close\, we’re excited to present the final report\, capturing key learnings\, experiences\, and insights gathered along the way. During the closing event\, we’ll share these outcomes and invite you to look ahead with us\, identifying how we can sustain and deepen this work in the years to come: \n\nMaking sense of the state of DEI beyond 2025\nInteractive workshop that will spark your DEI (resistance) stamina by Elodie Kona\, DEI Expert and co-author of Uncomfortable Conversations & co-editor of the “Inclusion Marathon” and our very own “Partos DEI Handbook”\nLaunch and presentation of the Partos DEI handbook\, a publication capturing all lessons learned\, tips and tools of the DEI Trajectory\, which has been made possible because of all of you!\nPlenty of space for conversation\, inspiration and connection.\nDrinks & food\n\nPlease note\, that we only have 35 places available of which 7 will be for people outside of the trajectory. If two people from the same organisation\, please let us know so we can check for availability. \nWe look forward to seeing you there\, to celebrate what we’ve built together\, and to grow beyond this moment!\n	Register here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Harvesting Insights\, Planting New Seeds: the closing of the Climate Justice CoP
DESCRIPTION:Over the last 3 years\, the Partos Climate Justice Community of Practice has provided a platform that brings together professionals from a wide range of organisations\, working on programmes that promote climate justice in different ways. We have had inspiring learning sessions on a wide range of topics\, such as climate finance\, nature-based solutions and locally led adaptation. \nThis year\, the Climate Justice CoP will come to an end. Therefore\, we are organising a closing session to look back at what we have learned and plant seeds for future collaboration. Together with the The Hague Humanity Hub\, we are hosting this session as an opportunity to (re)connect with each other\, share challenges and explore possibilities to work together in the future. \nThe session also provides a chance to situate the CoP’s work within the broader community of changemakers connected to The Hague Humanity Hub. At the Hub\, the Climate Justice community is a network of actors working at the intersection of climate\, peace\, and justice. By bringing together diverse voices\, the Hub aims to foster dialogue\, spark collaboration\, and support collective action toward a more just and resilient future. In this context\, the Hub’s Climate Justice community hopes to explore ways in which some of the initiatives developed under the Partos Community of Practice (CoP) can continue to grow and inspire further collaboration. \n  \nWhat to expect\nDuring the session we will look back on the past years and look forward to identify concrete opportunities for collaboration beyond this community in the future. Together we will explore: How can we keep collaborating to put climate justice principles into practice \n  \nThe programme includes:\n\nPresentation of the Climate Justice learning document with the main insights and learning from the past years.\nOpen Space session\, exploring: How can we keep collaborating to put climate justice principles into practice? Through this methodology you will help shape the agenda by bringing forward the topics and ideas that matter most right now. Together\, we’ll explore what issues and challenges still need attention\, and how we can continue to support each other and work together in the future.\nExposition: A glimpse into the future. SUMMARY:Fireside Peace Chats: Peace at Home
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThis event will be held in Dutch. \nHow can we achieve peace in our own city? What scope is there for dialogue as an instrument for peace\, amid increasing tensions in Dutch society? Come to the upcoming edition of Fireside Peace Chats\, where we will talk to Jakob de Jonge\, chair of The Hague Peace Projects\, about ‘Peace at Home’. Against the backdrop of global geopolitical instability\, this evening offers an opportunity to reflect on how peace can be achieved at the local level\, the balance between security and solidarity\, and what vigilance means in an increasingly militarised world. \n  \nThis informal conversation is intended to bring together peacebuilders\, enthusiasts and citizens to connect\, share experiences and exchange insights on how we can promote resilience within our local communities. \n  \nWhat are the Fireside Peace Chats?\nThe Fireside Peace Chats aim to create a space where practice\, research and policy in the field of peacebuilding come together in an informal way through the experiences of people on the ground. By sharing personal stories of peacebuilders and other figures with extensive experience in conflict areas\, we want to contribute to a locally informed paradigm shift in liberal peacebuilding. The Fireside Peace Chats were originally created as a joint initiative of Leiden University College (LUC)\, the Knowledge Platform for Security and the Rule of Law (KPSRL) and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH). SUMMARY:Annual T.M.C. Asser Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Asser Institute is very pleased to announce that Professor Joyeeta Gupta\, winner of the prestigious Spinoza Prize and a leading global voice on climate and environmental governance\, will deliver the 10th T.M.C. Asser Annual Lecture. The lecture\, which will address the need for abandoning fossil fuel and the role of social movements and independent courts providing access to climate justice\, will take place on Wednesday 26 November 2025 in The Hague (in-person). \n  \nAbstract \n“Protecting the public interest in times of climate change: from abandoning fossil fuel to sharing our Earth” By Joyeeta Gupta Fossil fuels are the biggest contributor to climate change\, which\, in turn\, is the key driver of all other environmental problems\, such as changing hydrological patterns\, biodiversity loss\, as well as air\, water and soil pollution. All of this is detrimental to human health and wellbeing. Scholars argue that a global temperature increase of 1℃ is the just objective and that the global system must accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels to prevent significant harm to people and irreversible harm to Earth’s life-supporting systems. This lecture will discuss the need for abandoning fossil fuel\, why it’s not happening\, and how this can be countered by social movements and independent courts providing access to climate justice. It then discusses the bigger picture of crossed planetary boundaries. Research into ‘just boundaries’ shows we must accelerate multilateralism\, not retreat into nationalist rights to pollute. When resources are scarce\, three rational actor responses often emerge: neo-liberal capitalist\, hegemonic state-centered\, and polycentric approaches. However\, only a social practice model building on multilateral goals and principles\, institutionalised in a possible global Constitution\, could help us address our dire situation. Though seemingly impossible today\, in five years\, the world may call for such a dream. \n  \nAbout Joyeeta Gupta \nJoyeeta Gupta is the 2023 winner of the Spinoza Prize\, the highest academic award in the Netherlands. She is full professor of Environment and Development in the Global South at the University of Amsterdam and IHE Delft Institute for Water Education\, and Faculty Professor on Sustainability (2019–2024). A leading global voice on climate and environmental governance\, she co-chaired UNEP’s Global Environment Outlook-6\, presented at the UN Environment Assembly and was awarded the PROSE Award for environmental science. She was co-chair of the Earth Commission and a member of the Global Commission on the Economics of Water\, contributing to the UN 2023 Water Conference. In 2022\, Gupta received the Piers Sellers Prize for solution-focused climate research. She was a lead author in the IPCC panel that won the Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore in 2007\, and of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (Zaved Second Prize). Gupta has published over 120 journal articles\, with 17\,000+ citations and an h-index of 64\, and has supervised nearly fifty PhD students. In the Netherlands\, she has served on high-level advisory bodies including the Commission on Development Cooperation and the Advisory Council on International Affairs (2011–2019). In 2019\, Joyeeta Gupta received an ERC Advanced Grant for her work on climate and fossil fuels.   \n  \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab\n	\n  \nFurther details on registration and attendance will be announced soon. SUMMARY:[Exhibition & panel discussion] Framing Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nOn 3 December 2025\, from 18:00\, the Asser Institute and the Royal Academy of Art\, The Hague (KABK) will present ‘Framing Climate Justice’\, an exhibition that visually investigates the entangled consequences of our current global system. \nThree emerging photographers\, Emilie Tizien\, Jamie Smith and Tori McCrea\, spent 3 months within the Asser Institute\, collaborating closely with legal scholars to create works that translate how international and European law shapes the daily lives of The Hague’s residents to visual stories. \nThe work of three artists-in-residence acts as a powerful report from the front lines of this struggle: \n\nJamie Smith investigates the global trade in used cars\, following how Europe’s discarded vehicles are shipped to Africa under the label of ‘sustainability’. His work reveals how environmental responsibility in the Global North can mean pollution and displacement elsewhere.\nEmilie Tizien brings the climate crisis close to home\, documenting Dutch houses damaged by fluctuating groundwater levels. Her photographs expose the consequences of inaction and question who bears responsibility when the ground itself becomes unstable.\nTori McCrea collaborates with the sea to explore what justice might mean beyond the human world. Using salt and seawater as co-creators\, she asks: if the ocean could speak\, what would it demand of us?\n\nFollowing the exhibition opening\, artists and researchers will gather for a panel discussion. Together\, we will explore questions at the heart of both art and international law. Can the ‘public interest’ survive in an age of ecological breakdown? Whose stories get told\, and whose remain unseen? And what might justice look like when we begin to listen to the planet itself? \n  \nProgramme\n18:00 — Doors open & exhibition viewing\n19:00 — Panel discussion\n20:00 — End of panel discussion\, followed by a reception and continued exhibition viewing \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:OPORA Foundation Conference: The Future of Return
DESCRIPTION:As the war in Ukraine enters its fourth year\, questions of return\, reintegration\, and mobility are becoming increasingly urgent. Existing research discusses return\, but rarely considers return amid active war. Drawing on wellbeing surveys and extensive mixed-method fieldwork\, our study illuminates the realities of returnees in wartime Ukraine. \nThis event will draw on the latest findings from our research project but will go beyond them\, highlighting the state of the art in mobility governance amid active war and political instability. Through interactive panels and breakout sessions\, together with renowned European experts we will reflect on the following topics: \n🔸 Mobility governance in the context of EU accession.\n🔸 Qualification recognition and upskilling of displaced Ukrainians.\n🔸 Reintegration challenges and patterns of repeated mobility after return.\n🔸 Operationalisation of dual intent: between integration and voluntary return. \nJoin us for “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯: 𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘓𝘰𝘯𝘨-𝘛𝘦𝘳𝘮 𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘜𝘬𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘈𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘜𝘬𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦”\, a hybrid conference bringing together policymakers\, researchers\, practitioners\, and community leaders from the Netherlands\, Ukraine\, and beyond. \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Human Rights Festival 2025 – Right to life for everyone and everything
DESCRIPTION:Human rights are like oxygen: you need them to live. During the Human Rights Festival\, we reflect on what is perhaps the most fundamental human right: the right to life\, liberty\, and security\, as enshrined in Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Discover\, experience\, and celebrate with others how we can strengthen this right\, for both people and nature. \n  \nRight to life for everyone and everything\nHow self-evident is the right to life\, really? What does it mean for undocumented people\, or for nature itself? A growing number of lawyers\, artists\, and activists are also advocating for environmental rights: rights for rivers\, animals\, forests\, and oceans. Because without a healthy living environment\, there is no life\, no freedom\, and no security. During the Human Rights Festival\, we explore these themes through conversations\, art\, music\, and workshops. \n  \nThe program\nThe 2025 program offers space for dialogue\, art\, music\, and action. Some of the components include: \n\nLecture by Jan van de Venis: on the rights of nature and universal human rights.\nRights of Nature Workshop: Experience in this mini-workshop how you can defend the rights of nature and give your piece of nature a voice\nVocal group KORALI: Ukrainian choral singing about love and nature.\nDialogue in The Hague: Before the festival\, discuss the rights of nature with each other under the guidance of experienced dialogue facilitators;\nWrite for Rights by Amnesty International: Write a letter\, change a life;\nWorkshop dabke dance: together we close the festival with a dance.\nThe full programme will be announced in the run-up to the festival.\n\n  \nPractical information\nDate: Sunday\, December 7\, 2025\nLocation: Grote Kerk Den Haag\, number 10 (next to Restaurant Zebedeus)\nDoors open: 1:30 PM | Start: 2:00 PM | End: 6:00 PM\nAdmission: free\, registration required \n  \n	Register here! This link opens in a new tab\n \n  \nWant to think along and participate?\nDo you have an idea or project that can strengthen the right to life for both people and nature? SUMMARY:Realizing the right to food for lasting stability
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nJoin us as we discuss how to ensure everyone has access to food\, and how to fund these efforts! \nRealizing the right to food for lasting stability: Scaling and financing effective justice solutions \nFAO and IDLO invite you to join a hybrid dialogue engaging stakeholders in the rule of law and right to food communities\, intended to explore practical opportunities to strengthen stability and peaceful societies by realizing the right to adequate food through people-centred justice. The proposed dialogue event will explore the enabling role of access to justice in fostering the realization of the right to food\, including by enhancing the capacity of rights-holders to claim their right to food\, and of formal and informal justice actors to address such claims effectively; and the ways in which securing the right to food contributes to trust\, security\, stability\, and cohesion. With this event\, FAO and IDLO hope to contribute to joint learning and collective action that promotes people-centred justice as a means of ensuring no one is left behind in realizing the right to adequate food\, and improving the resilience\, stability\, and development of food insecurity-affected societies. \nList of speakers to be updated in the coming weeks. \nFor more information\, please contact aquintana@idlo.int. \n  \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Peace Finance Workshop 1 - From Principles to Practice
DESCRIPTION:About this session\nThis two-hour workshop takes forward the Humanity Hub’s Investing in Peace initiative by introducing the principles and practice of Peace Finance – exploring how finance\, innovation\, and collaboration can actively strengthen peace and resilience. \n  \nPeace Finance starts from a simple idea: every financial or organisational decision affects trust\, inclusion\, and stability. While some organisations work in fragile or conflict-affected settings\, others focus on inequality\, governance\, human rights\, or social innovation – all of which influence how societies sustain stability and inclusion. Peace-positive investments put this principle into practice: they seek not only financial or developmental returns but also measurable contributions to cooperation\, legitimacy\, and resilience in the communities they touch. \n  \nThrough short examples and guided discussion\, participants will explore how these ideas can translate into practical approaches for reducing risk\, strengthening legitimacy\, and unlocking new forms of partnership. \n\nLed by practitioners: Hear directly from professionals applying Peace Finance in practice – from fund design and social enterprise to governance and impact innovation.\nInteractive and applied: Work through real examples\, group discussions\, and short design challenges that turn abstract concepts into concrete tools.\nA first step in a series: This workshop marks the beginning of a broader learning journey on Peace Finance\, with future sessions offering opportunities for deeper exchange\, co-creation\, and practice.\n\n  \nWhy this workshop\nPeace Finance provides a way to connect financial and development choices with the conditions that make societies more stable\, inclusive\, and resilient. As the boundaries between finance\, innovation\, and peacebuilding continue to blur\, organisations in every sector face new opportunities – and responsibilities – to align their decisions with peace-positive outcomes. \nThis workshop offers an accessible starting point to that conversation\, inviting participants from across civil society\, policy\, innovation\, and finance to explore together how their work can contribute to long-term stability and shared prosperity. \n  \nWho is this workshop for?\n\nCivil-society organisations\, NGOs & INGOs – strengthening inclusion\, accountability\, and social impact through collaborative\, locally grounded approaches.\nInnovators & PeaceTech professionals – exploring how digital tools\, data\, and new business models can enhance transparency\, participation\, and trust.\nPeacebuilding & development practitioners – linking programmatic work to investment opportunities that build resilience and reduce fragility.\nPolicy & governance advisers – integrating peace considerations into national\, local\, or corporate decision-making frameworks.\nImpact & finance actors – from donors and DFIs to ESG investors\, looking for strategies that de-risk operations and connect capital flows with long-term stability.\n\n  \n	Register your attendance online This link opens in a new tab\n Register your attendance in-person This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Think along about a flexible welfare budget
DESCRIPTION:Social work is important. It connects residents and strengthens neighborhoods. The municipality offers the Flexible Social Budget subsidy for this purpose. This subsidy allows for customized solutions\, allowing the municipality to better respond to questions or problems in the neighborhood. The municipality is now planning to adjust this program. Come to the meeting and join the discussion. \n  \nDo you organize activities that create an active\, safe\, and welcoming neighborhood? For example: \n\nAdditional deployment of youth workers\nSports activities for local residents\nTalent development for young people\nBringing residents together at (inter)national sporting events\nWould you like to help solve problems in the neighborhood?\n\n  \nWe’d love to hear from you. We’re curious about your ideas for adjusting this policy.
