SUMMARY:Municipality The Hague - Lecture on "Why European Security is Human Security"
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\nThe Municipality of The Hague will be hosting a special lecture at The Hague Humanity Hub on “Why European Security is Human Security”. The lecture will be held by Tara Verma This link opens in a new tab who is a Visiting Fellow Foreign Policy\, of the Brookings Institution’s Center on the United States and Europe This link opens in a new tab. She will explore the developments in Europe’s reckoning of its own role on the international stage\, and the role it has to endorse in making the multilateral order work. \n\n\n\nLecture Road Map\n\n\n\nThis lecture will address strategic shifts in European thinking since the beginning of the Covid pandemic\, as well as ramifications of European foreign policy decision-making and consequences for the general public. With the advent of social media and the information age\, citizens and decisions-makers are provided with news in real-time. The two key challenges for Europe and European citizens now are to ensure that in an increasingly fragmented world\, the European voice distinguishes itself as a convening force for allies and partners\, as well as to answer to its citizens’ preoccupations. How Europe addresses the tension between internal and external challenges – after Brexit\, the 2015 migration crisis\, after the shock of a Donald Trump administration\, Covid\, Russia’s war on Ukraine\, and tragic developments in the Middle East – will be an indicator of its willingness and capacity to act. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\n\n16.00 Doors open\n\n\n\n16.30 Opening remarks by Mariëlle Vavier          (Deputy Mayor for International Affairs\, City of The Hague)\n\n\n\n16.35 Lecture by Tara Varma\n\n\n\n17.05 Q&A  \n\n\n\n17.30 Reception in the Humanity Hub Café\n\n\n\n\n\nSign Up Here! SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night: Aurora's Sunrise
DESCRIPTION:Honouring Human Rights Day\, the Just Peace Movie Night will delve into Armenian Genocide with the screening of Aurora’s Sunrise. \n\n\n\nAbout Arora’s Sunrse: \n\n\n\nEpic reconstruction of the story of Aurora Mardiganian and the Armenian genocide. Beautiful animation shows Mardiganian’s odyssey from surviving the genocide to having her story filmed in Hollywood in 1919. Interspersed with archival interviews with Mardiganian and scenes from the original film\, which was thought lost for decades. \n\n\n\nIn 1919\, the silent film Auctions of Souls premiered in New York\, about a teenage girl who survived the Armenian genocide. The lead role was played by Aurora Mardiganian\, on whose life the film was based. Auctions of Souls became a huge success\, but not long after\, all copies of the film disappeared. Mardiganian\, who was briefly a famous figure in the U.S.\, retreated into anonymity. Shortly after her death in 1994\, 18 minutes of the film were recovered. \n\n\n\nAurora’s Sunrise by Inna Sahakyan tells Mardiganian’s incredible story. It is an epic tale of the flight from genocide and all the hardships and violence – but also the kindness and sacrificial health – that Aurora encountered on her journey. A brave film about a subject – the Armenian Genocide – that even today takes great courage to bring into the spotlight. \n\n\n\nFollowing the screenings\, engage in a discussion with the director of the film and experts in the field\, and participate in a Q&A\, exploring the intersection of genocide and Human rights. \n\n\n\nWhy Aurora’s Sunrise? \n\n\n\nIn light of the Human Rights Day on December 10\, at this event\, we aim to shed light on the human rights issues in Armenia and the significance of advocating for them through storytelling and media. \n\n\n\nAurora’s Sunrise unveils the historical injustice of the Armenian Genocide\, highlighting the systematic violations of the right to life and the targeting of cultural and religious identities. The film prompts reflection on the ongoing denial of the genocide and the importance of accountability. Aurora’s Sunrise is a film that serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to prevent and address genocidal acts. With this screening\, we aim to educate and raise awareness\, on the intersection between genocide and human rights\, the importance of early intervention\, and the value of remembrance. \n\n\n\nProgramme \n\n\n\n18:00 – Doors open and registration and drinks available to purchase at Hub Café \n\n\n\n18:30 – Welcome and introduction by moderator \n\n\n\n18:35 – Film Screening: Aurora’s Sunrise \n\n\n\n19:35 – Short break \n\n\n\n19:45 – Moderated discussion and Q&A with audience and experts \n\n\n\n20:45 – Networking and drinks available to purchase at Hub Café \n\n\n\n21:30 – Event ends \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSIGN UP

SUMMARY:KPSRL & IDLO to Host - KPAC23: Margins | Centres of Security & Rule of Law
DESCRIPTION:Who gets to interpret\, evaluate\, shape\, think about\, and write about social contracts? Who gets to make decisions on the role and contribution of security and the rule of law within them? Which experiences\, perspectives\, and stories are systematically made (in)visible\, or politically (ir)relevant for SRoL policy and programming? \n\n\n\nIn follow-up of the Knowledge Platform Annual Conference in Nairobi (KPAC23) both The Hague Humanity Hub members KPSRL This link opens in a new tab and IDLO This link opens in a new tab are hosting KPAC23 which will discuss the contribution of SRoL policy and programming to social contracts using the lens of Margins | Centres. The centres are the spaces in which one can define and shape a dominant interpretation of a particular issue and\, if relevant\, prioritise individual and public action\, while the those within the margins follow those interpretations and agenda-setting. \n\n\n\nEvent Aims: \n\n\n\n➡ Uptake of recommendations and conclusions from KPAC23 in Nairobi\, by translating these to the policy and INGO realities in The Hague➡ Identifying possible points of divergence between discussions in Nairobi and The Hague and what needs to happen to bring these closer to each other. This should be fed back to KPAC23 Nairobi participants too➡ Making voices heard in The Hague from those that normally can’t access KPAC – so in this case predominantly the East Africa region➡ Connect partners in The Hague➡ Providing accountability towards the Nairobi event \n\n\n\n\nMore Info Here

SUMMARY:Global Risk Advice - Female Traveler Security Training
DESCRIPTION:Hub Member Global Risk Advice is giving a training on female traveler safety. The core objective of their 1-day Safety for Female Travelers training is for female travelers to gain confidence and awareness. The majority of security challenges for men and women serving INGOs are the same. Women are not necessarily more vulnerable than men\, but they do face other types of risks that require specific attention.     \n\n\n\nTo address these gender-related risks\, they have developed this female traveler training. This training will be facilitated by women who have extensive experience in living and working overseas and as travelers. Encouragement\, solution-finding\, and awareness are the focus of this day. The warm approach taken by our trainers allows for women to share their concerns\, experiences and questions in a safe and understanding environment.     \n\n\n\nTopics: \n\n\n\n\n·          Preparing for travel as a woman    \n\n\n\n·          Situational awareness    \n\n\n\n·          Cultures and boundaries    \n\n\n\n·          Revealing the patterns of a sex-offender   \n\n\n\n·          Handling sexual assaults    \n\n\n\n·          Recovering from incidents    \n\n\n\n·          Adequate reactions in several scenarios/boundaries    \n\n\n\n·          Physical response and resilience \n\n\n\n\nTo register\, please reach out to Michele Moorlag-Salcido at: michele@globalriskadvice.com

SUMMARY:ISS - Immunity or impunity? Legal briefing on Ismail Ziada v the Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:Overview \n\n\n\nThis event hosted by the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam (ISS) This link opens in a new tab will have an expert panel explaining the case Ismail Ziada’s lawyers are now bringing on his behalf to the European Court of Human Rights. \n\n\n\nAn attack in 2014 resulted in the death of six of Ziada’s family members\, in the context of unlawful attacks on civilians and civilians’ infrastructure in Gaza. The Dutch courts refused to consider his war crimes claim against the Israeli officials on the grounds that the officials were protected by state immunity. The case being launched by Mr Ziada against the Netherlands at the European Court of Human Rights challenges this denial of justice in Dutch courts as a violation of the Netherlands’ obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights. \n\n\n\nThis event will present and explain to interested press and public this new legal initiative and its significance in the context of unfolding violations in Gaza today. The case is being brought on Mr Ziada’s behalf by Human Rights in PracticeOpens external and the event is supported by a collaborative civil society effort including the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam (ISS)\, the Nuhanovic FoundationOpens external\, Human Rights in Practice and the European Legal Support CenterOpens external. \n\n\n\nProgramme \n\n\n\nPresenter: Helen Duffy This link opens in a new tab \n\n\n\nModerator: Jeff Handmaker This link opens in a new tab \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Partos - Navigating power inequalities between Northern and Southern NGOs
DESCRIPTION:Overview \n\n\n\nThis event is an opportunity to dive into a new study providing a comprehensive analysis of concrete actions taken to shift power between NGOs. A just-completed research report\, “Where do we go from here” examines the nature\, extent and effect of actions undertaken by Northern and Southern NGOs within NGO partnerships and the broader aid system. It’s insights can help to figure out where we go from here. The study was developed as part of the Partos Shift the Power Lab 2.0. \n\n\n\nDrawing on more than 450 survey respondents and 53 interviews in the Global North and South\, the report highlights sources of power imbalances\, who does what to change it\, limitations\, barriers and priorities. Ultimately\, the report draws a clear conclusion: there is a need to go beyond actions within programmes and individual organisations. There is a need to revise the broader framework in which aid actors operate. \n\n\n\n\nSign Up Here! This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Movies That Matter On Tour - Deep Rising
DESCRIPTION:To power the green economy\, a new frontier is found for extracting minerals: the deep sea. But mining the ocean floor may have enormous unforeseen consequences. And who really owns the deep sea anyway? With amazing\, otherworldly images\, and fantastically narrated by Jason Momoa (Aquaman\, Game of Thrones). \n\n\n\nEvent Overview \n\n\n\nOn Tour This link opens in a new tab is a spin-off of the Movies that Matter Festival. Each year\, they select eight great festival titles that they aim to offer a wide platform throughout the country. In cooperation with (currently) seventeen film theatres and local volunteer groups\, they screen a film or documentary that matters\, every month from October to May. The screenings are accompanied by in-depth programmes and guest speakers arranged by local groups. In this way\, dialogue and broadening perspectives in local contexts is encouraged. \n\n\n\nFilm Summary \n\n\n\n‘The future is metallic\,’ Gerard Barron\, CEO of Deep Green Resources\, tells potential investors. His company is developing ways to extract metallic nodules from the ocean floor\, which he claims will open the pathway to a sustainable planet. According to Barron\, the world’s imminent electric car boom can be fully energized by these deep sea treasures. \n\n\n\nBarron’s green pitch gathers much enthusiasm. However\, experts like marine geologist Sandor Mulsow are fiercely against mining the ocean bottom. These minerals are crucial to sustaining the ocean biodiversity – which in turn is crucial to sustaining life on earth. Besides\, the deep seas are determined by treaty to be ‘common heritage of humankind’ – in other words: owned by us all. But the organization that should defend this status\, seems easily manipulated. And are the indigenous people of Papua New Guinea\, whose livelihoods are threatened by the practice\, listened to at all? \n\n\n\nCredits \n\n\n\nDIRECTOR – Matthieu Rytz \n\n\n\nTYPE – Documentary \n\n\n\nCOUNTRY – United States \n\n\n\nYEAR – 2023 \n\n\n\nDURATION – 93 minutes \n\n\n\nSPOKEN LANGUAGE – English \n\n\n\nSUBTITLES – none \n\n\n\n\nMore Info Here! SUMMARY:Asser Institute - Hate speech and incitement: International criminal and humanitarian law perspectives (HILAC Lecture)
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, the United Nations has remarked on a worldwide surge in hate speech and incitement\, and considered them ‘a menace to democratic values\, social stability and peace.’ In spite of the urgency to address hate speech and incitement\, there is no one universal definition of hate speech or incitement in international law. \n\n\n\nThis HILAC lecture\, organised by the Asser Institute This link opens in a new tab in collaboration with the University of Groningen\, will critically discuss the opportunities and difficulties in identifying a holistic and integrated definition of hate speech and incitement in international law. For example\, to what extent does the principle of legality\, which is fundamental to international criminal law\, limit reliance on human rights law and practice? How does one distinguish between propaganda\, hate speech\, and incitement in international humanitarian law? How do we surface gendered hate speech and gender-based incitement in international criminal judgments? The lecture by Audrey Fino will be followed by an expert panel discussion that will bring together several diverse perspectives.  \n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\n\nDr. Uladzislau Belavusau\n\n\n\nPredrag Dojčinović\n\n\n\nAudrey Fino\n\n\n\nJudge Alphons M. SUMMARY:ICCT - Book Launch: "Female Jihadis Facing Justice: Comparing Approaches in Europe"
DESCRIPTION:Overview: \n\n\n\nThis webinar hosted by the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism This link opens in a new tab will present findings from their upcoming book “Female Jihadis Facing Justice: Comparing Approaches in Europe”. The book compiled and analysed a unique dataset on female Violent Extremist Offenders (VEOs)\, comprising 283 criminal cases from Belgium\, France\, Germany\, and the Netherlands\, in addition to conducting over 60 semi-structured interviews with relevant practitioners and policy-makers. Speakers will provide insights into the main findings made in the four different country contexts\, provide a cross-cutting analysis\, and discuss ways forward to enhance a gender-sensitive management of female VEOs throughout the criminal justice system. \n\n\n\nContext: \n\n\n\nWomen made up around 20 percent of the individuals who left Europe to join the so-called Islamic State in Syria and Iraq (ISIS). Furthermore\, over the past few years\, a number of terrorist plots in Europe involved women. As a result\, the perception of these women has evolved significantly since 2015. Initially only seen as victims\, there is now a greater attention to their roles within a terrorist organisation\, as well as to the threat they may pose in prison and afterwards. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n> Thomas Renard – Director of ICCT This link opens in a new tab \n\n\n\n> Tanya Mehra –  Senior Research Fellow and Programme Lead at ICCT This link opens in a new tab \n\n\n\n> Marc Hecker – Deputy Director of the French Institute of International Relations This link opens in a new tab \n\n\n\n> Sofia Koller – Senior Research Analyst at the Counter Extremism Project  This link opens in a new tab \n\n\n\n\nSign Up Here! As part of the PLI\, the KPSRL is currently running pilots and commissioning a study to enhance their understanding of how approaches to programmatic learning can and should be structured to effectively contribute to quality and impact of programmes. This joint research endeavour seeks to deepen the understanding of using tools – such as Propel – within the realm of the Security and Rule of Law (SRoL) sector and their role for programmatic learning. \n\n\n\nFocus Questions \n\n\n\nWhat role do tools play in the SRoL sector’s programmatic and organisational learning? \n\n\n\nHow can the integration of digital tools\, including Propel\, within the PLI framework be optimised for enhanced learning\, collaboration\, and impactful outcomes? \n\n\n\nBy participating in this project\, you will have the chance to:  \n\n\n\n\nExchange Insights: Collaborate with peers on the topic of programmatic learning and innovative approach to learning\, specifically in the SRoL sector to exchange ideas and insights.\n\n\n\nDeepen Understanding: Gain a profound understanding of both organisational and programmatic learning. During this first session\, you can contribute your own learning questions that you have wanted to uncover for us to investigate throughout this project.\n\n\n\nExplore Tools: Discover how complementary tools like Propel and approaches used in the Programmatic Learning Instrument can support learning processes. We will invite you to follow along with our progress and explore the findings with us.\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here! This link opens in a new tab
