SUMMARY:Film "BLIND TRUST: Leaders & Followers in Times of Crisis" - Live Panel and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:The Film:\n\n\n\n“BLIND TRUST: Leaders & Followers in Times of Crisis” is about the work of Vamik Volkan who grew up as an ethnic minority on the divided island of Cyprus\, home for two warring ethnic groups – the Turks and Greek. After training to be a psychiatrist in Turkey Volkan founded the “Center for the Study of Mind & Human Interaction” at the University of Virginia and\, over the next four decades\, brought enemy groups together for dialogue in traumatized regions around the globe. Based on his fieldwork\, he has created a new vocabulary for understanding group emotion\, one based on shared trauma\, its transmission across generations\, and the task of collective mourning. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us! Hear first-hand experiences of young peace-builders from areas around the world and how they reflect on the work of Dr. Volkan from their youth perspective. \n\n\n\nOn September 9 at 6 pm CET\, you can join the live panel discussion and engage in a Q&A via Zoom. You can find the link on the platform under Q&A. \n\n\n\nYPI is a youth-led organization that promotes the inclusion of youth in peace and reconciliation processes. Established in 2014\, YPI empowers youth to be partners in peace and to be recognized as such. YPI connects youth in (post-)conflict regions\, engages youth in dialogue and peace-building activities\, and creates a platform to advance inclusive peace. \n\n\n\nYPI’s flagship initiative is the Young Leadership Experience (YLE): a year-long program in which 8 Israelis and 8 Palestinians develop themselves personally and professionally by attending training\, workshops\, conferences\, and dialogue sessions to become leaders in their communities and beyond. \n\n\n\nPlease consider making a donation via the platform’s Store. This event is free but you can donate to YPI and the film’s completion so we can continue our essential work. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Webinar tools and localisation tactics for cross-cultural co-creation
DESCRIPTION:After the successful sessions on Community-Led Development and Human-Centered Design last year\, which we organised in collaboration with Butterfly Works\, The Hunger Project and The Movement for Community-Led Development\, the fourth session focuses on tools and localisation tactics for cross-cultural co-creation. This session\, on September 16th 2021 from 15.30-17.00\, will be hosted by Butterfly Works. \n\n\n\nThis session will explore a tension we often experience: how to ensure localisation and community-led programming while scaling your successful interventions. \n\n\n\nAfter having invested in an innovative approach\, a well-designed intervention or a fully developed digital product\, organisations look for scaling and expansion. They want to ensure the time and money invested can be translated into results. But a solution works differently in every context and often the solutions require some contextualisation. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, we want to discuss this localisation and contextualisation process by looking at different tools that enable organisations to share intentions and allow communities to share their needs.  Tactics to hear each other and to keep an open mind for new opportunities even when there is already a clear objective. \n\n\n\nSave the date\n\n\n\nPlease also save the date for the upcoming sessions later this year: \n\n\n\nSession #5: Shift the Power in strategic partnerships with MoFA – October 14th 2021Session #6: What obstacles are in our way and what can we jointly do to overcome them? – November 25th 2021\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:HagueTalks: How can we inspire communities to join in making change?
DESCRIPTION:This Hague Talks features several speakers who are working to make the world a more peaceful and just place. They will tell their stories of their dreams\, their obstacles and especially how they work to engage with their communities and inspire others to join them.  \n\n\n\nThis is the opening event for a five week long event during which organisations based in The Hague engage with Hague residents to show how they are working to make the world a more peaceful and just place. For many people ‘The Hague’ is just a concept\, a slogan\, even an ideal. But we all know that in fact it’s made up of a wide range of individuals – each with their own story – working to make the world a more just and peaceful place. Stories never go out of fashion. Where people came from\, what obstacles they’ve had in their way\, why it is that they have wanted to focus on peace or justice\, what are their dreams – all these make up the rich tapestry of tales that can form the inspiration for this year’s Just Peace month of activities. \n\n\n\nThe Hague is known as the city of peace and justice\, but how do local residents see these lofty concepts? How can we get our communities inspired to take action on big issues like climate change? What do you do when you want to make change in a conservative society; how do you get allies? \n\n\n\nThis Hague Talks features several speakers who are working to make the world a more peaceful and just place. They will tell their stories of their dreams\, their obstacles and especially how they work to engage with their communities and inspire others to join them. \n\n\n\nEvent is opened by Saskia Bruines\, vice mayor of the Hague. \n\n\n\nABOUT SPEAKERS \n\n\n\nDiane\, LGTBI+ Human Rights Defender from the Shelter City project from Justice and Peace.Sjaak Kroes\, The Hague City Poet. SUMMARY:Art of Peace - Garden Walk
DESCRIPTION:Poetry\, music and true stories about individuals who have dedicated their lives to peace and freedom\, all these ingredients come together in “Art of Peace.” This artistic evening walk will take place in the garden of the Peace Palace from 23 to 26 September 2021. Participants will walk through an attractively lit garden\, listen to a story or a poem via an audio tour and enjoy live music. “Art of Peace” not only connects different artistic elements\, but also the history of the UN\, freedom and the Peace Palace. \n\n\n\n\n\nGarden tour ‘Art of Peace’\n\n\n\nAt the beginning of the route\, visitors meet the Goddess of Peace Irene who addresses them through the art of spoken word. In addition to historical characters and works of art\, fragments from the history of the UN will also be featured. For example\, the participants are introduced to the Nobel Prize laureate Dag Hammarskjold\, who was Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953 to 196. Not only during the Suez Canal crisis he advocated for dialogue and de-escalation. \n\n\n\nThe repercussions of the Second World War and the history of the Peace Palace are illustrated by the story of Max Chotzen. He worked as a librarian in the Peace Palace and at the same time was active in the Dutch resistance. Together with colleagues\, he printed illegal newspapers on a stencil machine hidden in the basement of the palace. \n\n\n\nThese and various other stories and art interventions about solidarity\, hope\, peace and freedom are experienced by visitors as they stroll through the garden. \n\n\n\nYou can find more information here! SUMMARY:Community Programming Board
DESCRIPTION:The CPB was created to advise the Hub on developing the community and ensure that the Hub programming is of value to both the community and ecosystem by identifying and creating opportunities to connect and collaborate. After experimenting with this in 2020 we would like to bring it to the next level this year. We will also be inviting new members to constitute a cross section of the community with about 12 people. Joining the CPB is a commitment to join 7-8 meetings per year. \n\n\n\nSome of the key activities for this year will include: \n\n\n\nPut to practice the seasonal quarterly theme concept for Hub programming that we developed together last year Develop a cornerstone event format to foster connection and collaboration within the Hague ecosystem on specific themes Keep developing member peer to peer groups Continue developing the Hub as an SDG House (first project: SDG Traineeship programme) Co-create\, identify and leverage ad hoc programming and event opportunities for the community\n\n\n\nOther potential activities on the horizon include the development of the Hub as a public debating platform\, activities to boost the international reputation of the Hague ecosystem\, and further cultivate the Hub as hub for development and access to talent. \n\n\n\nPlease send an email to programming@humanityhub.net if you would like to attend. \n\n\n\nNote: The Community Programming board is set\, but members can join the meetings as guests.

Register here. \n\n\n\nBackground\n\n\n\nSolidarity is a core normative ideal underpinning both the development of modern international law as well as the European project. Solidarity has been perceived as the guiding principle in altering the outdated structure of international relations from an order promoting self-interest of States to one that pursues community interests and attempts to find solutions to problems that affect all humankind. \n\n\n\nIn the context of public international law\, solidarity has been used as a legal principle in terms of international peace and security. In the European Union (EU) context\, it has been invoked primarily during the eurozone and refugee crises. In the African Union (AU)\, solidarity has been part of the principles since the creation of the Organisation for African Unity in 1963. \n\n\n\nSolidarity also emerged as an objective in the Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS). More recently\, solidarity has been invoked as a core principle during international discussions around the distribution of the coronavirus vaccine. This exemplifies the diversity of ways in which the principle of solidarity has been utilised as a core value in shaping international and regional legal regimes.  \n\n\n\nThe conference will include papers detailing the multiplicity of ways the principle of solidarity can be used both in international and regional law. These contributions revolve around how solidarity can/should be deployed to achieve a variety of aims\, including in relation to the environment\, human rights\, development\, peace and security\, migration\, and other fields\, in a variety of contexts across the globe\, whether regional integration projects (EU\, AU\, and others) or as part of public international law. \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nOver two days\, this conference will feature international and renowned academics and legal scholars from a multiplicity of research fields. The keynote speakers are Prof. E. Sharpston (former Advocate General of the CJEU) and Prof. D. Tladi (Professor of International Law\, University of Pretoria)\, and will include panels on: \n\n\n\nThe principle of solidarity in international and regional law: A general overviewSolidarity: The view from the Global SouthSolidarity in EU migration and asylum lawSolidarity in EU law: Case-studiesSolidarity in international law: Case-studies\n\n\n\nRead the full programme. \n\n\n\n\nRegister now.

SUMMARY:Conference on the Future of Europe: The EU and its Southern neighbourhood
DESCRIPTION:LINKS Europe and The City of The Hague are pleased to invite you to participate in this policy dialogue\, which is the second in a series of activities that they are organising together as part of the debate in the framework of the Conference on the Future of Europe process. This event will be held at the offices of LINKS Europe\, Lange Voorhout 43\, in The Hague on Thursday\, 28 October 2021\, from 1600-1800. \n\n\n\nEurope’s Southern Neighbourhood stretches from the Atlantic coast of the Sahel region of Africa to the Khyber Pass\, and is made up of various regions\, including the Sahel\, North Africa and the Levant\, and the Arabian Peninsula. Iran and Afghanistan\, whilst not in the immediate neighbourhood\, are close and important enough to require particular attention. \n\n\n\nThe EU is already heavily involved in the region but the overall strategy is often perceived to be patchy and insufficient. In the Sahel\, the EU is preparing to deploy a large military mission; the Union of the Mediterranean has the ambition to provide a complimentary process to the EU’s own integration processes; and in the Indian Ocean the EU operates a naval mission to combat piracy – one of eleven missions currently deployed in the Southern neighbourhood. The EU is playing an important role in the discussions around the JCPOA with Iran. But as the recent crisis in Afghanistan has shown\, the EU’s own capacity to act with its own resources is embarrassingly insignificant. As the United States shifts its strategic posture towards the Indo- Pacific region\, many are expecting Europe to step-up and step-in. Does Europe have the capacity\, or even the vision to do this? What needs to happen in the short and medium term and what are the tools required? One thing appears to be certain: to succeed the EU needs to approach the Southern neighbourhood with an open mind; it must listen carefully both to its own citizens\, as well as to the citizens of the neighbouring countries; and it must always keep its eyes wide open\, for both risks and opportunities. \n\n\n\nThe policy dialogue will look at how the EU engages with its southern neighbourhood\, the impact of the Southern neighbourhood on the EU\, and issues related to migration\, radicalisation\, development\, and conflict resolution. It will explore particularly whether there are opportunities that can be exploited in order to make this relationship more mutually beneficial. \n\n\n\nParticipants to the policy dialogue will hear short presentations from four guest speakers\, after which every participant present will be asked to contribute their views on the topic in short 1–2-minute presentations\, followed by a general discussion. Views from the meeting will be reflected in a short summary of proceedings\, which will form part of the final submissions to the Conference on the Future of Europe. \n\n\n\nRegistration for this event is required. If you require any more information\, please email: wmurray@links-europe.eu. \n\n\n\nThe event will be held under COVID-19 guidelines – attendees will need to present a proof of recovery\, vaccination\, or test before entry. \n\n\n\n\nRegister!
