SUMMARY:Planetary Crisis- can we fight climate change\, biodiversity loss\, and pollution?
DESCRIPTION:We are at the halfway point of the SDG agenda. The effects of the triple planetary crisis of climate change\, biodiversity loss and pollution become ever more present in the daily lives of millions around the world. Working on the issue of a clean and healthy environment is key to help protect societies around the world. We must take measures against the hurt of global warming\, which is not equally divided\, and its consequences\, which can lead to political instability and conflict. \n\n\n\nThis interactive youth session connects the insights of the executive director of the UN Environment Programme with the views of the next generation for the promotion of a clean and healthy environment. \n\n\n\nWhat can the youth expect of UNEP and what can UNEP expect from the youth? Can we avoid a climate disaster? And if so\, how? What role can UNEP play in achieving the SDGs?  \n\n\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \n\n\n\n\nInger Andersen\, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme. She provides unique insights into the work of the UN and its efforts on climate\, nature\, and pollution around the world.\n\n\n\n\nEvent moderator is Wouter Ubbink\, VN-jongerenvertegenwoordiger Biodiversiteit & Voedsel (UN Youth Representative Biodiversity and Food). \n\n\n\nEvent is co-organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs This link opens in a new tab. \, The United Nations Environment Programme This link opens in a new tab (UNEP) and Leiden University – Campus The Hague This link opens in a new tab. \n\n\n\nThis will be a hybrid event\, with both online and in-person participation possible. \n\n\n\n\nMore information can be found here

SUMMARY:The London Story- Minority Rights in India: Assessing Trends in the First Half of 2023
DESCRIPTION:For religious and ethnic minorities in India\, the first half of 2023 has been marked by arbitrary arrests\, extrajudicial demolitions of houses\, allegations of illegal religious conversions\, mob attacks\, and lynchings. The Early Warning Project in 2023 ranks India as 8th highest-risk of concern for mass atrocities against religious minorities among 162 countries. The 2023 USCIRF report cites India as being a “country of particular concern” regarding freedom of religion and belief. This briefing comes at a key time\, as the EU Guidelines on the promotion and protection of freedom of religion or belief turn 10 years old\, and as the EU takes stock of their implementation. The rights of minorities are under imminent attack in India\, and thereby also the values of human rights and democratic freedoms that the EU-India relationship is built on. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nYou will hear from:  \n\n\n\nDr. Ritumbra Manuvie is a permanent member of Faculty at the University of Groningen and also the founder of Stichting The London Story. Dr. Manuvie works extensively on citizenship\, exclusion\, propaganda and disinformation landscape in India. She is part of consortia working on Destination Democracy in the EU\, and one of the recipients of the Ethics Law Society and AI Consortium Grant from NWO.  \n\n\n\nFather Cedric Prakash is a Jesuit priest and human rights defender on an unconditional and relentless quest for justice and harmony. He has lived and worked with indigenous peoples\, in slums\, with Internally Displaced Persons in Syria\, Jordan\, Iraq and Lebanon\, and with Protestants and Catholics in the Ireland conflict\, and provided emergency humanitarian aid during the 1984 massacre of the Sikhs in India and the 2002 Gujarat pogrom. He has received the Legion of Honour by France (2006)\, the Mother Teresa International Award (2013)\, and several other awards. \n\n\n\nKavita Srivastava is National Secretary of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL)\, India’s largest human rights organisation. The PUCL strives to defend civil liberties and human rights of all members of society. With PUCL\, she has filed cases in India’s highest courts seeking protection against exploitation for minorities and fought against state-sponsored violence\, including by mobs as well as armed forces. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAmbassador Stephen Rapp is the former United States Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues. He most recently served on the Panel of Independent International Experts\, which in 2022 concluded that there is evidence of likely violations of international law committed against Muslims in India. Rapp was also the Prosecutor of the Special Court for Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2009 where he led the prosecution of former Liberian President Charles Taylor. \n\n\n\nAmbassador Fatou Bensouda is a Gambian lawyer and former Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC). She is currently serving as the Gambian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. She also provided significant advice to a Panel of Independent International Experts\, which in 2022 concluded that there is evidence of likely violations of international law committed against Muslims in India \n\n\n\nPlease sign up here: https://bit.ly/MinoritiesInIndia2023 This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Knowledge Platform Security & Rule of Law: Feminist Foreign Policy- A Feminist Way Forward for SRoL Development Cooperation
DESCRIPTION:Since 2014\, more than a dozen countries and political parties have announced their intention of developing a Feminist Foreign Policy (FFP) – one approach to reworking and reimagining historically embedded power dynamics that underlie international development cooperation. The Netherlands is one of the most recent countries to begin the process of developing its own Feminist Foreign Policy. But what does this actually entail? Joined by Alejandra Vicente (REDRESS & GQUAL Secretariat)\, Fridah Githuku (F.M) (GROOTS Kenya) & Jutta Dr. Joachim (Radboud University)\, this event will discuss what distinguishes Feminist Foreign Policy from previous (similar) policies and what this policy might look like in practice for SRoL programming. It will highlight the voices of practitioners in SRoL programming and offer policy recommendations on specific adjustments needed to fully operationalize the policy. \n\n\n\nClick the link below to read the concept note!    : https://lnkd.in/esx-sabv \n\n\n\nClick the link below to register!    : https://lnkd.in/e_uTgB9v

SUMMARY:Feminist Foreign Policy: A feminist way forward for SRoL development cooperation
DESCRIPTION:On June 26th 2023\, The Knowledge Platform Security & Rule of Law  will host a conversation on implications of  a Feminist Foreign Policy on development cooperation\, with a specific emphasis on SRoL programming.  The event will discuss what distinguishes Feminist Foreign Policy from previous (similar) policies and what this policy might look like in practice for SRoL programming. It will highlight the voices of practitioners in SRoL programming and offer policy recommendations on specific adjustments needed to fully operationalize the policy. \n\n\n\nKey questions \n\n\n\nHow do we ensure that  FFP enhances women’s rights while also tackling other power relations more holistically\, using a rights-based and intersectional understanding(and approach) of feminism? \n\n\n\nHow can an FPP help address pre-existing power dynamics undermining meaningful SRoL programming and policy (and the development cooperation ecosystem as a whole)? \n\n\n\nHow can we operationalize an FFP in the SRoL sector? What ingredients are necessary and what challenges should we be cognizant of? \n\n\n\nHow can we more meaningfully involve civil society organizations (including community-based organizations\, women’s groups\, youth…) in developing a feminist approach to SRoL? \n\n\n\nNames of speakers & moderator (optional) \n\n\n\nDr. Jutta Joachim (Radboud University \n\n\n\nAlejandra Vicente (REDRESS & GQUAL Secretariat)\,  \n\n\n\nFridah Githuku (F.M) (GROOTS Kenya) \n\n\n\nDr. Jutta Joachim (Radboud University) \n\n\n\nModerator: Messina Laurette MANIRAKIZA\, KPSRL

SUMMARY:ICCT Annual Conference 2023 - Hybrid Extremism: Causes and Responses to Anti-Institutional and Far-Right Extremisms
DESCRIPTION:International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) is hosting their Annual Conference\, where researchers\, practitioners\, and policymakers will come together to explore the causes\, challenges\, and responses to far-right and anti-institutional extremisms in a world of flux. \n\n\n\nDemocratic principles are being challenged on all sides\, the social fabric is eroding\, and public trust in core institutions corroded. Trends like these are not entirely new\, but have been further exacerbated by the Covid-19 crisis\, thriving conspiracy theories\, and proactive disinformation campaigns. These conditions are conducive to the rapid emergence of so-called “anti-institutional extremism”\, the re-emergence of right-wing extremism\, and the hybridisation of extremist ideologies\, facilitated by a changing and pervasive information ecosystem. Such developments have far-reaching effects\, manifesting both locally and globally\, which will be discussed throughout this conference.  \n\n\n\n\nFind more information and sign up here

SUMMARY:ISS: Conflict compounded: Implications of the war in Ukraine on global development challenges
DESCRIPTION:In February 2022 Russian forces invaded Ukraine\, devastating the lives of an estimated 44 million people. Approximately 21.2 million people\, mostly women and children\, have crossed the border and fled to neighboring countriesOpens external. \n\n\n\nWith many countries actively or indirectly involved\, this conflict can be considered a gamechanger\, with far-reaching global consequences. \n\n\n\nThis event\, the fourth episode of Research InSightS LIVE\, will explore the compounding effects of the war in Ukraine on global development challenges. Our speakers will look into this issue from different lenses: \n\n\n\n\nWhat is the impact of the war on the liberal international order?\n\n\n\nHow does this war affect the political and economic survival of vulnerable countries in the global south\, like for instance Sri Lanka?\n\n\n\nWhat are the current and longer-term implications for global development\, including food (in)security?\n\n\n\nHow does this war impact the work of organizations involved in humanitarian work or development both internationally and on the ground?\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\nDr Oane Visser (ISS) – Based on his long-term research in Russia and Ukraine and on global food politics\, Oane Visser looks at the current and longer-term implications of the war in Ukraine for global food (in)security and development. He situates this in the increased geopolitical fragmentation (including of international agencies\, and ‘global’ value chains)\, the long-standing vulnerabilities of the global food system (such as excessive corporate concentration and speculation) and recent vulnerabilities due to climate change\, and indebtedness exaggerated by the covid19 pandemic.\n\n\n\nDr Shyamika Jayasundara-Smits (ISS) – Drawing on her past and ongoing research on impact of armed conflicts and war economies on post-war transitions\, Shyamika Jayasundara-Smits will focus on how the ongoing war in Ukraine is affecting political and economic survival and foreign policy choices of small states in the Indian ocean region. She will focus on Sri Lanka\, a small island nation in the Indian ocean to show how Russia’s war in Ukraine is being felt by Sri Lanka; that is caught up in a twin crisis of economic-political in the post-pandemic period\, that is also caught up in the midst of militarised power play of global and regional powers that are competing to control and dominate the Indian ocean region. \n\n\n\nProfessor Wil Hout (ISS) – Wil Hout will focus on the international ramifications of the war in Ukraine\, in particular for the operation of the so-called liberal international order. The liberal order that came into being at the end of World War II is a rules-based order in which multilateral institutions have been playing a central role. The Russian invasion of Ukraine should not only be understood as an attempt to rearrange the geopolitical order in Eastern Europe\, but needs to be assessed also as an attack on the fundamental principles governing the post-war international order.\n\n\n\nRajin Alqallih-van der ZijdeOpens external (PAX) – While the war in Ukraine is dominating daily news\, there are currently 26 other ongoing conflicts in the world\, including the war in Yemen which has been raging for almost a decade. Rajin Alqallih-van der Zijde will speak about the effects of the war in Ukraine on the work of humanitarian and development organizations in Yemen.\n\n\n\n\n\nSign up here

This edition is titled: Stepping up the protection of civic space: What can you do? \n\n\n\nAs we discussed during the Summit for Democracy This link opens in a new tab and Democracy Under Threat Coalition This link opens in a new tab in March 2023\, democracy is under threat. This is unfortunately our current reality across Europe\, as well as the Netherlands. Democracy is about more than free and fair elections. It is also about restoring trust and protecting the space where people can have their voices heard and advocate for a better society. \n\n\n\nAt this edition of #DemocracyDrinks\, we want to reflect on what we can do to protect our democracy\, more specifically civic space. How can we build vibrant and open civic spaces to strengthen our democracies where we can make sure citizens can speak out\, assemble and advocate? \n\n\n\nSpotlight Speakers\n\n\n\nThe June edition of the #DemocacyDrinks offers a unique opportunity to hear a short assessment of the civic space in Europe and The Netherlands from our spotlight speakers: \n\n\n\n\nMarjolein Kuijers\, Policy Officer Right to Protest\, Amnesty International\, The Netherlands. SUMMARY:KUNO: Humanitarian situation and response in Sudan
DESCRIPTION:KUNO is hosting a panel on the ongoing situation in Sudan. \n\n\n\nThe ongoing fighting in Sudan has a devastating impact on the population: more than three million people have been displaced\, and 24.7 million – over half the population – are in need of assistance. Aid organizations are struggling to adjust and increase their humanitarian efforts and programmes: employees of five international and national aid organisations operating in Sudan told reporters that their employers had suspended humanitarian and development programmes. The humanitarian response in Sudan is dealing with funding and security constraints\, and tries to navigate its way through bureaucratic obstacles imposed by authorities. Sudan’s war is barely a few months old\, yet aid actors already fear international fatigue and neglect. \n\n\n\nAs we are dealing with so many challenges to get humanitarian aid to the places where it is most needed\, whilst Sudanese civilians are struggling to survive and face high levels of violence every day\, there is a strong need to exchange amongst practitioners working in the Sudanese context.   \n\n\n\nThe following topics will be reflected upon: \n\n\n\n\nWhat are the main humanitarian (access) challenges which organizations are facing?\n\n\n\nHow do humanitarian organizations deal with those challenges and how to create and preserve humanitarian space? \n\n\n\nWhat does conflict sensitivity mean in the current context in Sudan\, and how does it define and shape our programming?\n\n\n\nWhich actors are best placed to operate in conflict hotspots\, and how can the international community support and learn from those actors?\n\n\n\nHow can we together -policy makers\, humanitarian practitioners\, researchers- make sure to keep the conflict in Sudan on the international agenda? How can we expand our collective impact to improve the situation for Sudanese civilians?\n\n\n\n\nPanelists\n\n\n\n\nAnette Hoffmann\, Senior Research Fellow\, Conflict Research Unit\, Clingendael Institute\,\n\n\n\nTinomuzivashi Zhou\, PLAN Head of humanitarian action\, DRA joint response lead\,\n\n\n\nLeon Willems\, Senior Advisor\, Free Press Unlimited\,\n\n\n\nSaad Abdulmahmoud\, engaged with several humanitarian initiatives of Sudanese diaspora organizations\,\n\n\n\nMarie Smit\, Second Secretary\, Development & Humanitarian Affairs\, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Sudan\, Eritrea & Chad.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nTo sign up\, send an email to: kuno@kuno-platform.nl \n\n\n\n\nFind more information here

SUMMARY:ICCT to Host - Victims of terrorism and their right to access justice: Challenges and solutions
DESCRIPTION:International Centre for Counter-Terrorism is hosting a panel discussion on victims of terrorism and their right to access justice. \n\n\n\nVictims’ right to access to justice is a fundamental human right and a principle of the rule of law. To exercise this right\, States have the obligation to provide adequate avenues for victims to access the judicial system and have their cases heard before a competent jurisdiction. How can these obstacles be resolved? How can the experiences\, perspectives and priorities of victims be (best) considered during the investigation and trial process? And what are the victims’ experiences with the judicial system? These are some of the questions to answer in order to facilitate victims’ fight to access justice. DESCRIPTION:Join us on 26 September for our monthly #DemocracyDrinks.   \n\n\n\nFor this next edition of the #DemocracyDrinks we want to reflect on some of the geopolitical dimensions between Russia and the EU. SUMMARY:WO=MEN Dutch Gender Platform - Gender MPI: Werk Maken van Politieke Participatie (Dutch Event)
DESCRIPTION:Verandering begint met actie. Want woensdag 22 november komt snel dichterbij.  \n\n\n\nHet evenement wordt geco-host door Tweede Kamerleden Songül Mutluer This link opens in a new tab (PvdA) en Derk Boswijk This link opens in a new tab (CDA)\, met de moderatie in handen van Laila Ait Baali\, directeur WO=MEN Dutch Gender Platform. \n\n\n\n\nMeer Informatie Hier!

SUMMARY:Leiden University - GTGC Lunch Seminar: Human Rights for Governing Digital Platforms
DESCRIPTION:Our member\, Leiden University’s research program Global Transformations and Governance Challenges are hosting a research presentation. On Monday 9 October 2023 from 12:00-13:00 in room 4.78\, Jelena Belic This link opens in a new tab\, Matthew Canfield This link opens in a new tab\, Rachel Griffin This link opens in a new tab\, Henning Lahmann This link opens in a new tab\, and Barrie Sander This link opens in a new tab will present their research on ‘The Promise and Perils of Human Rights for Governing Digital Platforms’.  \n\n\n\nRecent decades have witnessed the emergence of digital platforms as the “core organisational form” of informational capitalism. While platformisation is facilitating greater interconnection between actors around the world\, many perceive it as threatening core social and democratic values.  In response\, policymakers\, civil society organisations\, and academics have begun to frame platform governance through the framework of human rights. Yet while it offers a salient language of social justice\, it is unclear whether it is legally and conceptually adequate to address the issue. \n\n\n\n\nMore Info Here! This link opens in a new tab
