SUMMARY:ISS Humanitarian Governance Seminar: Political and Humanitarian Crisis in Myanmar
DESCRIPTION:In this Humanitarian Governance hybrid seminar\, Dr Gerard McCarthy presents his book examining how ideals and practices of non-state welfare can sustain democratic resistance and undermine social reform. \n\n\n\nThis panel discussion marks the publication of Gerard McCarthy’s Outsourcing the Polity: Non-State Welfare\, Inequality and Resistance in Myanmar.  \n\n\n\nInformed by research during Myanmar’s decade of partial civilian rule (2011–2021)\, the book examines how ideals and practices of non-state welfare can both sustain democratic resistance and undermine social reform over time. With non-state social actors more important than ever following Myanmar’s return to dictatorship in 2021\, Outsourcing the Polity casts new light on the lasting legacies of outsourcing for distributive politics and poses questions about humanitarian engagement in Myanmar in the years to come.During this hybrid event\, McCarthy will offer a short overview of the book and then scholarly and practitioner discussants will offer comments and perspective. The talk will conclude with a Q&A. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nGerard McCarthy – Assistant Professor of Social Policy and Development at ISSMaaike MatelskiOpens external – Assistant Professor of Social and Cultural Anthropology at Vrije University AmsterdamAndrew Fischer – Professor of Inequality\, Social Protection and Development at ISSKhin OhmarOpens external – Founder and chairwoman of the Advisory Board of Progressive Voice \n\n\n\n\nPlease Register

SUMMARY:LeidenAsiaCentre: Seeking Western Men: Email-Order Brides Under China's Global Rise
DESCRIPTION:On 25 May 2023\, the LeidenAsiaCentre has invited Monica Liu\, author of the book Seeking Western Men: Email-Order Brides under China’s Global Rise\, published by Stanford University Press to give a lecture. This lecture will take place in The Hague Humanity Hub from 16:00 – 18:00\, followed by a reception. \n\n\n\nThe talk will summarise the research Monica Liu conducted from 2008 to 2019 in China where she explored the life histories and decision-making processes of Chinese women seeking to marry Western men whom they met through online dating agencies. The majority of these women were middle-aged (above 40)\, divorced\, and from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Monica’s investigation asked a number of questions: How did the inequalities that emerged during China’s transition from state socialism toward a global market economy shape these women’s desires to pursue out-migration via marriage? How did the women’s social and economic status in China affect their expectations about their new lives abroad? Join the discussion and sign up now! \n\n\n\n\nSign Up Here

SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night x Hague Talks: How to Achieve Environmental Justice?
DESCRIPTION:Join Just Peace The Hague This link opens in a new tab and Hague talks This link opens in a new tab for a special joint event on environmental justice as part of Hague Justice Week This link opens in a new tab As a key part of a more equitable and just future\, climate justice is growing in importance across the world\, and nowhere more so than in countries that are affected by climate change and rising sea levels the most. \n\n\n\nSo\, in collaboration with Movies that Matter This link opens in a new tab\, we will be screening the film Anote’s Ark by Matthieu Ritz: which tells the story of the nation of Kiribati\, which is being drastically affected by climate change. The film shows the struggle of Kiribati’s president\, Ton\, against the backdrop of UN climate negotiations in Paris. This is dramatically strung through a telling of the personal story of Tiemeri\, a mother of six who is trying everything she can to ensure that she and her family can move to safety in New Zealand. \n\n\n\nThe film screening will be followed by a special Hague Talks and discussion where we will delve into the topic of ecocide\, environmental justice\, and how Mozambique and its Chief Justice is working to secure a more just future for its people. \n\n\n\nThe event aligns with the overall theme of The Hague Justice Week 2023 \, which is to promote and discuss justice and human rights on different scales. By focusing on environmental justice\, the event highlights the critical role that the law plays in protecting the environment and ensuring that justice is served for both people and the planet. \n\n\n\n\nSign up here

SUMMARY:ARTWORKS: Storytelling that Informs Policy
DESCRIPTION:Displacement is the product of numerous systems. While often documented at critical junctures; such as familial separation\, ports of entry\, or moments of distress\, the reality for many displaced people is a web of convoluted and prolonged governmental\, geopolitical\, and legal structures. As issues of displacement are increasingly viewed through the lens of cycle-based media\, these experiences often go unseen and neglected\, forcing migrants and asylum seekers to develop their own methods of support\, visibility\, and influence over policy. \n\n\n\nART WORKS Projects\, in partnership with the U.S.-based think tank\, the Wilson Center’s Refugee and Forced Displacement Initiative (RAFDI)\, presents Storytelling that Informs Policy: Addressing Refugees and Forced Displacement. This symposium will feature an artist talk by the photographers\, a panel discussion\, guest speakers from partner organization\, and an installation of images. All which explore how visual media and tools can open up dialogue and inform new perspectives on understanding the root causes of forced displacement and where in the ecosystem each of our organizations can play a role in identifying new and creative solutions to addressing a quickly growing global displacement challenge. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4:00 – 6:00pm\, Symposium \n\n\n\n6:00 – 7:00pm\, Closing Reception \n\n\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \n\n\n\n\nBassam Khabieh is an internationally recognized Syrian photojournalist who reported stories of the Syria conflict while working for Reuters. He was awarded the Robert Capa Gold Medal and was a fellow at the Oak Institute for Human Rights at Colby College. Khabieh has worked with ART WORKS Projects on a number of exhibitions and projects including: “The Children of Syria\,” “After Syria – A New Generation’s Pathway to Finding Home\,” and his recent project includes the publishing of a book of his work\, “Witnesses to War: The Children of Syria.”\n\n\n\nLiselot van Zantvoort works at Justice & Peace Netherlands\, a human rights organization in the Hague. Liselot coordinates a national network called Samen Hier\, in which Dutch citizens collaborate with their local government to create a safe pathway to their communities for refugees residing in camps outside of Europe. During her studies\, Liselot did research on the ineffectiveness of Dutch migration policy – its inhumane management made her driven to work on its improvement.\n\n\n\nPer Heggenes is the CEO of IKEA Foundation\, the philanthropic arm of Stichting INGKA Foundation\, the owner of the Swedish home furnishings company IKEA. As CEO\, Heggenes sets and drives the Foundation’s funding and innovation strategies and is a tireless advocate for children living in some of the world’s poorest communities. In 2019\, Heggenes was appointed by the UN Secretary General to join the High Level Panel on Internal Displacement with the goal of developing durable solutions to protracted internal displacement. Previously\, Heggenes held global and regional leadership roles for the shipping and logistics company Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics and global public relations firm Burson-Marsteller.\n\n\n\nJohn Thon Majok (event moderator) is the Director of Refugee and Forced Displacement Initiative (RAFDI) at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars where he is also the Deputy Director of Development and Senior Director of Grants Management. Before the Wilson Center\, Majok was a contractor at the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State; Program Officer at the Council of American Overseas Research Centers; and Program Coordinator at the Academy for Educational DevelopmentA former refugee from South Sudan\, Majok’s perspectives on forced displacement are informed by lived experience and scholarship. He has lived for 13 years in refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya before he was resettled in the U.S. in 2001.\n\n\n\n\n\nSign up here

SUMMARY:Strengthening conflict resolution capabilities in the Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:This is a separate side session organised by The Hague Institute for Innovation of Law that will dive into the recent lessons from the road to submitting a proposal at the National Growth Fund*. This session will take place from 14:00 – 15:00\, before the peace&justice café event starting at 15:00. \n\n\n\nThe proposal\, coordinated and submitted by HiiL\, but representing the collective plans of a consortium of 34 partners\, entails a first real attempt at broad PCJ-development on a national scale in the Netherlands. The plan spans 7 conflict areas and includes development on financial models\, regulation and (international) dissemination and movement. \n\n\n\nDuring the session\, we facilitate interaction on lessons learned regarding questions such as:- What have we learned from making the economic and the social case for people-centred justice? – Coalition building: what have we learned from working with a large consortium of partners?- How does the approach put forth in the plan for the Netherlands resonate in other countries and what opportunities or challenges might be at play in the context of other countries? \n\n\n\n* With the Dutch Growth Fund the Dutch government allocates funding (a total of 20 billion between 2021-2025) to projects with the highest potential of contributing to our national earning capacity\, or in other words\, to durable economic growth in either the field of knowledge development or R&D and innovation. \n\n\n\n— \n\n\n\nThis side session is a part of the next peace&justice café with focus on ‘People-Centred Justice’ in collaboration with The Hague Institute for the Innovation of Law and as part of Hague Justice Week! \n\n\n\n\nSign up here\n\n\n\n\nPlease note that you will need to register separately for the side-session organised by HiiL and for the peace&justice café event. \n\n\n\nFollow this link to register for the peace&justice café on people centered justice.

SUMMARY:peace&justice café in collaboration with HiiL: People Centred Justice
DESCRIPTION:The next peace&justice café will focus on ‘People Centred Justice’ in collaboration with The Hague Institute for the Innovation of Law and as part of Hague Justice Week! People Centred Justice is a simple idea with huge potential impact: that legal practices and systems should be based on evidence\, ‘what works’ from the potential of the citizen\, and should be able to deliver satisfactory outcomes for the people they serve. Or\, in short: sensible\, outcome-oriented\, and accessible. The peace&justice café on People Centred Justice will take a cross-sectoral look at achieving these aims\, working together with The Hague Humanity Hub community to explore the challenges\, pitfalls and success factors of justice innovation at scale. \n\n\n\nAnd there will also be side sessions at the café on an exciting new initiative that a consortium of 37 organisations across the Netherlands are working on to make conflict resolution accessible\, effective\, and people-centred through structural R&D! \n\n\n\nCheck out the web-page for full speaker information\, and sign up at the link below! \n\n\n\nMore information and sign-up here

SUMMARY:Mercy Corps: Centering community voice to drive sustainable change in Syria
DESCRIPTION:One of the most critical topics in the evolving response to the Syrian crisis is how to shift the focus and inputs to those most affected\, build local ownership and accountability\, as well as informing humanitarian needs and processes. The event aims to showcase the work of local organizations collaborating with Mercy Corps in Northwest and Northeast Syria\, as well as the experience of local participants already engaged in community-led approaches. It will feature a panel to share about community-led approaches and how the humanitarian community can ensure programming is led and informed by the needs articulated on the ground. Panelists will share the benefits and best practices of mobilizing communities\, and how existing processes and systems can change to better incorporate community voice. Based on examples such as Mercy Corps ‘Communities Acting Together to Advance Linkages Yielding Social Engagement’ (CATALYSE) approach and successes and lessons learned across North Syria\, discussion will focus on how centering community voices can lead to effective and impactful community and governance systems in Syria. Attendees will be able to hear direct examples from project participants inside Syria. The event will be designed to raise awareness about the approaches and processes for driving community-led change in Syria for a more sustainable response. It will also provide a platform for networking and sharing best practices among professionals and practitioners. The side event will include a 90-minute presentation and panel discussion; and a 60-minute drinks reception. \n\n\n\nThe event will take place at: Atelier 29 – Rue Jacques de Lalaing 29 – 1000 Brussels \n\n\n\n\nMore Information Sign up here

SUMMARY:The Hague Peace & Justice Talent Hub presents- The Handshake with: Kirsten Milden (UNOCHA)
DESCRIPTION:Navigating your career in the world of peace & justice can be tough: with so many potential options\, causes\, and routes into the sector. Sometimes it can even be difficult to think where to begin- do I need to do several internships? Does everyone need to go into ‘programme management’? And why does every UN job require a 24-page application form? \n\n\n\nThat’s why The Hague Peace & Justice Talent Hub is launching ‘The Handshake’: an event series where we invite senior figures from the world of peace & justice to join in conversation and reveal how they’ve ended up where they are! You’ll have the chance to ask questions\, get insights\, and be inspired. The first event will feature Kirsten Mildren from UN OCHA. \n\n\n\nAbout Kirsten: \n\n\n\nKirsten Mildren is the Chief of Public Advocacy and Campaigns for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA). She leads communication efforts around the world to provide support for the 230 million people who need humanitarian assistance\, mostly through global advocacy campaigns. \n\n\n\nUN OCHA has a unique mandate to speak out on behalf of the people worst affected by humanitarian situations. It’s the humanitarian arm of the UN responsible for coordinating the international humanitarian response to save more lives. \n\n\n\nGrinding conflict\, the deadly climate crisis and health epidemics\, are causing record levels of hunger and displacement\, worsened poverty\, and has put equality for women and girls increasingly out of reach. As a result\, one out of every 23 people now needs humanitarian assistance. \n\n\n\nIt’s her job to keep world attention focused on humanitarian issues. \n\n\n\nKirsten is passionate about storytelling and innovative digital content. Many of her campaigns for World Humanitarian Day have won awards such as Impossible Choices\, The Human Race and Share Humanity – https://about.worldhumanitarianday.org/past-campaigns/ \n\n\n\nKirsten has just celebrated 20 years with OCHA where she has worked in Addis Ababa\, Geneva\, Bangkok and New York and has deployed to dozens of emergencies all over the world including most recently for the Syria and Turkey earthquake. \n\n\n\nBefore joining the UN\, she worked as a television journalist for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation\, which she joined as a cadet after graduating from law and journalism in Australia. \n\n\n\n**Please note that this event is geared towards students and young professionals \n\n\n\n\nSign up here

SUMMARY:REDRESS: Victims’ Rights at a Crossroads
DESCRIPTION:To mark REDRESS’ 30th Anniversary\, REDRESS is hosting an interactive discussion and reception to reflect on the rights of victims of international crimes\, including the many obstacles that impede their realisation. \n\n\n\nOver the last three decades\, REDRESS has played a significant role in ensuring the rights of victims of international crimes\, including during the adoption of the Rome Statute of the ICC\, which affirmed groundbreaking rights for victims\, including their right to receive reparations\, to participate in proceedings and to be legally represented. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will be moderated by renowned activist and former Dutch development minister Lilianne Ploumen\, a REDRESS’ Patron. A panel of multidisciplinary experts with expertise and lived experience on the rights of victims of international crimes in legal proceedings\, will reflect\, among other questions\, on the main achievements when it comes to victims’ rights in the last 30 years and the reasons why those achievements and the current legal framework are insufficient to deliver victims’ rights in practice. \n\n\n\nDuring the event\, REDRESS will also launch its new Advisory Panel\, chaired by Leiden Professor Helen Duffy\, which brings together academic experts and practitioners who contribute to REDRESS’ work. \n\n\n\nWith this event\, REDRESS seeks to honour the plight of victims by learning from the past\, discuss new strategic directions\, and renew the commitment to those affected by torture and other international crimes. \n\n\n\nThe event will be followed by a drinks reception . \n\n\n\nRegistration closes on June 16. \n\n\n\n\nSign up now

SUMMARY:The London Story- Minority Rights in India: Assessing Trends in the First Half of 2023
DESCRIPTION:For religious and ethnic minorities in India\, the first half of 2023 has been marked by arbitrary arrests\, extrajudicial demolitions of houses\, allegations of illegal religious conversions\, mob attacks\, and lynchings. The Early Warning Project in 2023 ranks India as 8th highest-risk of concern for mass atrocities against religious minorities among 162 countries. The 2023 USCIRF report cites India as being a “country of particular concern” regarding freedom of religion and belief. This briefing comes at a key time\, as the EU Guidelines on the promotion and protection of freedom of religion or belief turn 10 years old\, and as the EU takes stock of their implementation. The rights of minorities are under imminent attack in India\, and thereby also the values of human rights and democratic freedoms that the EU-India relationship is built on. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nYou will hear from:  \n\n\n\nDr. Ritumbra Manuvie is a permanent member of Faculty at the University of Groningen and also the founder of Stichting The London Story. Dr. Manuvie works extensively on citizenship\, exclusion\, propaganda and disinformation landscape in India. She is part of consortia working on Destination Democracy in the EU\, and one of the recipients of the Ethics Law Society and AI Consortium Grant from NWO.  \n\n\n\nFather Cedric Prakash is a Jesuit priest and human rights defender on an unconditional and relentless quest for justice and harmony. He has lived and worked with indigenous peoples\, in slums\, with Internally Displaced Persons in Syria\, Jordan\, Iraq and Lebanon\, and with Protestants and Catholics in the Ireland conflict\, and provided emergency humanitarian aid during the 1984 massacre of the Sikhs in India and the 2002 Gujarat pogrom. He has received the Legion of Honour by France (2006)\, the Mother Teresa International Award (2013)\, and several other awards. \n\n\n\nKavita Srivastava is National Secretary of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL)\, India’s largest human rights organisation. The PUCL strives to defend civil liberties and human rights of all members of society. With PUCL\, she has filed cases in India’s highest courts seeking protection against exploitation for minorities and fought against state-sponsored violence\, including by mobs as well as armed forces. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAmbassador Stephen Rapp is the former United States Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues. He most recently served on the Panel of Independent International Experts\, which in 2022 concluded that there is evidence of likely violations of international law committed against Muslims in India. Rapp was also the Prosecutor of the Special Court for Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2009 where he led the prosecution of former Liberian President Charles Taylor. \n\n\n\nAmbassador Fatou Bensouda is a Gambian lawyer and former Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC). She is currently serving as the Gambian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. She also provided significant advice to a Panel of Independent International Experts\, which in 2022 concluded that there is evidence of likely violations of international law committed against Muslims in India \n\n\n\nPlease sign up here: https://bit.ly/MinoritiesInIndia2023 This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Knowledge Platform Security & Rule of Law: Feminist Foreign Policy- A Feminist Way Forward for SRoL Development Cooperation
DESCRIPTION:Since 2014\, more than a dozen countries and political parties have announced their intention of developing a Feminist Foreign Policy (FFP) – one approach to reworking and reimagining historically embedded power dynamics that underlie international development cooperation. The Netherlands is one of the most recent countries to begin the process of developing its own Feminist Foreign Policy. But what does this actually entail? Joined by Alejandra Vicente (REDRESS & GQUAL Secretariat)\, Fridah Githuku (F.M) (GROOTS Kenya) & Jutta Dr. Joachim (Radboud University)\, this event will discuss what distinguishes Feminist Foreign Policy from previous (similar) policies and what this policy might look like in practice for SRoL programming. It will highlight the voices of practitioners in SRoL programming and offer policy recommendations on specific adjustments needed to fully operationalize the policy. \n\n\n\nClick the link below to read the concept note!    : https://lnkd.in/esx-sabv \n\n\n\nClick the link below to register!    : https://lnkd.in/e_uTgB9v

SUMMARY:Feminist Foreign Policy: A feminist way forward for SRoL development cooperation
DESCRIPTION:On June 26th 2023\, The Knowledge Platform Security & Rule of Law  will host a conversation on implications of  a Feminist Foreign Policy on development cooperation\, with a specific emphasis on SRoL programming.  The event will discuss what distinguishes Feminist Foreign Policy from previous (similar) policies and what this policy might look like in practice for SRoL programming. It will highlight the voices of practitioners in SRoL programming and offer policy recommendations on specific adjustments needed to fully operationalize the policy. \n\n\n\nKey questions \n\n\n\nHow do we ensure that  FFP enhances women’s rights while also tackling other power relations more holistically\, using a rights-based and intersectional understanding(and approach) of feminism? \n\n\n\nHow can an FPP help address pre-existing power dynamics undermining meaningful SRoL programming and policy (and the development cooperation ecosystem as a whole)? \n\n\n\nHow can we operationalize an FFP in the SRoL sector? What ingredients are necessary and what challenges should we be cognizant of? \n\n\n\nHow can we more meaningfully involve civil society organizations (including community-based organizations\, women’s groups\, youth…) in developing a feminist approach to SRoL? \n\n\n\nNames of speakers & moderator (optional) \n\n\n\nDr. Jutta Joachim (Radboud University \n\n\n\nAlejandra Vicente (REDRESS & GQUAL Secretariat)\,  \n\n\n\nFridah Githuku (F.M) (GROOTS Kenya) \n\n\n\nDr. Jutta Joachim (Radboud University) \n\n\n\nModerator: Messina Laurette MANIRAKIZA\, KPSRL

SUMMARY:ICCT Annual Conference 2023 - Hybrid Extremism: Causes and Responses to Anti-Institutional and Far-Right Extremisms
DESCRIPTION:International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) is hosting their Annual Conference\, where researchers\, practitioners\, and policymakers will come together to explore the causes\, challenges\, and responses to far-right and anti-institutional extremisms in a world of flux. \n\n\n\nDemocratic principles are being challenged on all sides\, the social fabric is eroding\, and public trust in core institutions corroded. Trends like these are not entirely new\, but have been further exacerbated by the Covid-19 crisis\, thriving conspiracy theories\, and proactive disinformation campaigns. These conditions are conducive to the rapid emergence of so-called “anti-institutional extremism”\, the re-emergence of right-wing extremism\, and the hybridisation of extremist ideologies\, facilitated by a changing and pervasive information ecosystem. Such developments have far-reaching effects\, manifesting both locally and globally\, which will be discussed throughout this conference.  \n\n\n\n\nFind more information and sign up here

SUMMARY:ISS: Conflict compounded: Implications of the war in Ukraine on global development challenges
DESCRIPTION:In February 2022 Russian forces invaded Ukraine\, devastating the lives of an estimated 44 million people. Approximately 21.2 million people\, mostly women and children\, have crossed the border and fled to neighboring countriesOpens external. \n\n\n\nWith many countries actively or indirectly involved\, this conflict can be considered a gamechanger\, with far-reaching global consequences. \n\n\n\nThis event\, the fourth episode of Research InSightS LIVE\, will explore the compounding effects of the war in Ukraine on global development challenges. Our speakers will look into this issue from different lenses: \n\n\n\n\nWhat is the impact of the war on the liberal international order?\n\n\n\nHow does this war affect the political and economic survival of vulnerable countries in the global south\, like for instance Sri Lanka?\n\n\n\nWhat are the current and longer-term implications for global development\, including food (in)security?\n\n\n\nHow does this war impact the work of organizations involved in humanitarian work or development both internationally and on the ground?\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\nDr Oane Visser (ISS) – Based on his long-term research in Russia and Ukraine and on global food politics\, Oane Visser looks at the current and longer-term implications of the war in Ukraine for global food (in)security and development. He situates this in the increased geopolitical fragmentation (including of international agencies\, and ‘global’ value chains)\, the long-standing vulnerabilities of the global food system (such as excessive corporate concentration and speculation) and recent vulnerabilities due to climate change\, and indebtedness exaggerated by the covid19 pandemic.\n\n\n\nDr Shyamika Jayasundara-Smits (ISS) – Drawing on her past and ongoing research on impact of armed conflicts and war economies on post-war transitions\, Shyamika Jayasundara-Smits will focus on how the ongoing war in Ukraine is affecting political and economic survival and foreign policy choices of small states in the Indian ocean region. She will focus on Sri Lanka\, a small island nation in the Indian ocean to show how Russia’s war in Ukraine is being felt by Sri Lanka; that is caught up in a twin crisis of economic-political in the post-pandemic period\, that is also caught up in the midst of militarised power play of global and regional powers that are competing to control and dominate the Indian ocean region. \n\n\n\nProfessor Wil Hout (ISS) – Wil Hout will focus on the international ramifications of the war in Ukraine\, in particular for the operation of the so-called liberal international order. The liberal order that came into being at the end of World War II is a rules-based order in which multilateral institutions have been playing a central role. The Russian invasion of Ukraine should not only be understood as an attempt to rearrange the geopolitical order in Eastern Europe\, but needs to be assessed also as an attack on the fundamental principles governing the post-war international order.\n\n\n\nRajin Alqallih-van der ZijdeOpens external (PAX) – While the war in Ukraine is dominating daily news\, there are currently 26 other ongoing conflicts in the world\, including the war in Yemen which has been raging for almost a decade. Rajin Alqallih-van der Zijde will speak about the effects of the war in Ukraine on the work of humanitarian and development organizations in Yemen.\n\n\n\n\n\nSign up here
