SUMMARY:The Political Unconscious of Global China Studies "The Taiwan Consensus and the Ethos of Area Studies: Spectral Transitions"
DESCRIPTION:Image by Leungchopan on Envato\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for the next edition of the Fireside Peace Chats event series\, titled “The Political Unconcious of Global China Studies\,” in which we will discuss his recent work The Taiwan Consensus and the Ethos of Area Studies: Spectral Transitions. \n\n\n\nThe reason why consideration of the political unconscious in relation to transitions is essential to the discussion of Global China Studies is that the “apparatus of area” in which Global China Studies participates and of which it is an exemplary instance is ultimately a means for “managing\,” in a rather large and abstract sense\, both the meaning and the process of transition. The Taiwan Consensus and the Ethos of Area Studies: Spectral Transitions constitutes a timely intervention into debates over the status of Taiwan\, at a moment when discussions of democracy and autocracy\, imperialism and agency\, unipolarity and multipolarity\, dominate the intellectual agenda of the day. Pursuing a parallel trajectory that is both epistemic and historical\, that is traced out in relation both to Taiwan’s recent history and to the disparate forms of knowledge production about that history\, this work engages in scholarly debate about some of the burning issues of our time\, including transitional justice\, hegemony and conspiracy in the digital age\, debt regimes\, cultural difference\, national language\, and the traumatic legacies of war\, colonialism\, anticommunism\, antiblackness\, and neoliberalism.  \n\n\n\nThis Edition’s Guest Speaker\n\n\n\nJon Douglas Solomon is a professor in the Department of Chinese Literature\, Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 and a researcher attached to the Centre de Recherches Plurilingues et Multidisciplinaires\, Université Paris Nanterre. His publications have focused on the biopolitics of translation\, developing a critique of the disciplinary divisions of the Humanities in their relation to the economic and political divisions of the postcolonial world. Recent publications include a book in Chinese about the 2019 Hong Kong anti-ELAB movement\, A Genealogy of Defeat of the Left: Translation\, Transition\, and Bordering in the anti-ELAB Movement in Hong Kong\, and an article in English titled Logistical Species and Translational Process: A Critique of the Colonial—Imperial Modernity that appeared in the Montreal-based journal Intermédialités. More information about his 2023 book The Taiwan Consensus and the Ethos of Area Studies: Spectral Transitions is available here. \n\n\n\nMore About Fireside Peace Chats\n\n\n\nThe Fireside Peace Chats series is an event series consisting of informal\, intimate chats with peacebuilders who have either lived in for an extended period of time or are from conflict-affected environments. Fireside Peace Chats are a joint initiative of Leiden University College The Hague (LUC)\, Knowledge Platform for Security and Rule of the Law (KPSRL)\, and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH)\, with an aim to open a space where practice\, research and policy in peacebuilding come together in an informal way\, through experience of people on the ground. This initiative aims to contribute to a locally informed paradigm shift in liberal peacebuilding.

SUMMARY:Expert Meeting on the Humanitarian Crisis in Eastern DRC (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:Image by Stichting Vluchteling\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing the conversation on the 6th of March this year\, KUNO organises this meeting to take stock of the challenges in responding to the humanitarian needs in the region.  \n\n\n\nAbout the event\n\n\n\nSince the rapid offensive by M23 rebels and the seizure of Goma and Bukavu\, the Eastern DRC is experiencing a severe\, escalated humanitarian crisis. UNHCR reports that some million people are estimated to be displaced in North and South Kivu. Sexual and gender-based violence has surged alarmingly. Critical funding gaps are severely hindering humanitarian efforts in eastern DRC. Thousands are deprived of life-saving aid\, protection efforts are under immense strain\, and malnutrition cases have escalated. Health centers are overwhelmed\, increasing the risk of outbreaks of diseases. The Congolese government and M23 have both just pledged to commit to work towards peace\, although it remains unclear what this directly means for the support of the affected people.  \n\n\n\nTopics for discussion\n\n\n\n– Overview of humanitarian access and challenges in reaching populations in situations of vulnerability in Eastern Congo– The impact of the current situation on NGOS’ security and safety– Outlook on the future– The impact of the current situation on Congolese organisations and how they have had to adapt their operations to address current needs– The impact of the conflict on women and conflict related sexual violence (CRSV) \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n-International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO) \n\n\n\n-Concert d’Actions pour les Jeunes et Enfants Défavorisés (CAJED) \n\n\n\n-Third speaker tbc \n\n\n\nThis session will be moderated by Kiza Magendane\, an independent writer\, political scientist\, and social entrepreneur. After the speakers’ introductions\, the floor will be opened for discussion.   \n\n\n\nThe working language will be English. French-English translation will be provided for those French-speaking joining online.   \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nPlease register at kuno@kuno-platform.nl with your name and organisation.

SUMMARY:Rules for a lawless world? The international legal order in an age of great-power struggle for normative primacy
DESCRIPTION:This lecture is part of the symposium ‘Rules for a Lawless World?’\, which explores the state and future of the international legal order in an age of great-power rivalry. \n\n\n\nThe symposium explores the consequences of the struggle for global normative primacy between China and the USA and their respective allies\, for the prospect of a law-governed world\, or its potential collapse. Focusing on the ordering\, protective and emancipatory functions of international law\, it seeks to grasp the state and direction of the international legal order—whether we are witnessing the breakdown of existing legal norms\, their pervasive violation\, or their replacement with alternative standards. Ultimately\, the symposium probes how great-power rivalry affects humanity’s aspiration for a world ruled by the force of law\, and not the law of force. \n\n\n\nKeynote Speakers\n\n\n\nAgnès Callamard\, Secretary General at Amnesty InternationalDr Agnès Callamard is Secretary General at Amnesty International. She leads the organization’s human rights work and is its chief spokesperson. She is responsible for providing overall leadership of the International Secretariat\, including setting the strategic direction for the organisation and managing relations with Amnesty International’s national entities. Dr. Callamard has been a prominent figure in the human rights world for decades. In 2016\, she was appointed as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extra-judicial\, summary or arbitrary killings. Along with her UN work\, she was also the Director of Global Freedom of Expression at Columbia University in New York.  \n\n\n\nFrancesca Albanese\, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories (Online)Ms. Francesca Albanese is an international lawyer\, specialised in human rights and the Middle East. Since May 2022\, she has served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967. SUMMARY:International law and the governance of AI-driven military technologies
DESCRIPTION:This innovative two-day training programme\, co-organised with the  This link opens in a new tabStockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) This link opens in a new tab\, will provide you with a deep understanding of military applications of artificial intelligence (AI). It will create a common basis of knowledge around key features of these technologies\, their associated risks and benefits\, and the various regimes of international law relevant to their governance. \n\n\n\nArtificial Intelligence is revolutionising military operations\, driving the development of autonomous weapons systems (AWS)\, decision-support tools (AI-DSS)\, and other advanced warfare technologies. While these innovations advance at a rapid pace and AI offer significant promise for military operations\, they also pose substantial risks\, particularly with regard to compliance with international law. \n\n\n\nTo address these risks\, numerous governance efforts and initiatives have emerged\, with a notable increase\, particularly over the past two years. These efforts seek\, among other things\, to establish prohibitions\, limits\, and requirements for use while building on and reinforcing existing obligations under international law. \n\n\n\nYet\, a lack of an informed understanding of these technologies and how international legal frameworks apply to their development and use is an obstacle to the advancement of governance efforts. \n\n\n\nThis short course aims to contribute to the progress of governance efforts and other initiatives around AI-driven military technologies\, by providing insights and an informed understanding of:   \n\n\n\n\n– AI-driven military technologies\, including AWS and AI-DSS\n\n\n\n– Recent and upcoming developments in AI in the military domain\n\n\n\n– AI-related concepts\, such as predictability\, explainability\, and traceability. These concepts are crucial for policymakers and experts to advance constructive debates. \n\n\n\n– Knowledge of the different regimes of international law that play a role in the governance of AI-driven military technologies\n\n\n\n\nWho can attend? \n\n\n\nThis short course would be valuable for policymakers\, legal advisors\, diplomats and other individuals involved or interested in the development\, use\, governance and adjudication of AI-enabled military technologies.  \n\n\n\nThis short course is organised in collaboration with the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

SUMMARY:Impact of ODA Budget Cuts on The Hague Ecosystem – Presentation & Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:What lessons are emerging from the impact of ODA cuts and how can we act on them together? \n\n\n\nThis community dialogue is grounded in the findings of our Ecosystem Risk Analysis\, a research initiative that mapped the early impacts of budget cuts across the Hague peace and justice ecosystem. While the results confirm many shared concerns\, they also offer a baseline from which to explore collective responses and adaptive strategies. \n\n\n\nWe invite you to jointly reflect on these insights and explore pathways toward a more resilient and connected ecosystem. \n\n\n\nOver the course of March and April\, we conducted a survey\, interviews and desk research to gain a better understanding of the financial and operational impact of the (inter)national budget cuts. The results are in and we would like to share the research findings with survey respondents\, interviewees and anyone else interested. We invite you to jointly reflect on the impact of these recent changes on the peace and justice ecosystem of The Hague and how we can move forward together. \n\n\n\nSession Objectives: \n\n\n\n-Share research insights to establish a common understanding \n\n\n\n-Invite participants to reflect on their own experiences and challenges \n\n\n\n-Discuss implications for the Hague ecosystem  \n\n\n\n-Reflect on how to move forward together \n\n\n\nWho is it for: \n\n\n\n-Survey respondents\,  \n\n\n\n-Interviewees \n\n\n\n-Policy advisors \n\n\n\n-Other interested parties  \n\n\n\nFor any questions or concerns\, please contact engage@humanityhub.net

SUMMARY:Reducing Risk by Design
DESCRIPTION:Image by Photoyasya on Envato\n\n\n\n\n\nA Roundtable on Unintended Consequences in Humanitarian Work \n\n\n\nJoin us for Reducing Risk by Design\, an interactive roundtable event that explores the real-life and digital threats emerging in a world shaped by rapid decisions\, good intentions—and often\, unintended consequences. \n\n\n\nWhether you work in public service\, business\, technology\, or civil society\, your actions impact people’s lives in ways that aren’t always predictable. This session invites you to step back\, reflect\, and engage with the risks we may unknowingly create—especially for those who are already vulnerable in times of crisis. \n\n\n\nWhat to Expect\n\n\n\nThrough a mix of guided discussion and hands-on exercises\, participants will navigate realistic scenarios where every choice can open a path—or a pitfall. \n\n\n\nYou’ll be challenged to respond to complex situations such as: \n\n\n\n\nInformation leaks in emergency zones\n\n\n\nTech rollouts that exclude or endanger\n\n\n\nPublic policies that unintentionally create new vulnerabilities\n\n\n\n\nTogether\, we’ll map these invisible risks and explore how small\, accessible shifts in thinking and design can lead to safer\, more responsible outcomes. \n\n\n\nWhy Attend\n\n\n\nThis roundtable is not about blame—it’s about awareness\, shared learning\, and action. It’s a space for cross-sector dialogue\, where you can hear diverse perspectives\, share your own\, and leave with tangible ideas to strengthen the safety and impact of your work. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a policymaker\, technologist\, NGO worker\, business leader\, or engaged citizen\, Risk by Design will challenge you to see risk differently—and empower you to help build systems that: \n\n\n\n\n Protect rather than expose\n\n\n\n Include rather than exclude\n\n\n\n\n Come with your questions.\n\n\n\nLeave with new tools.Let’s rethink how we shape safety in a fragile world.

SUMMARY:Fireside Peace Chat - Civil Society and Peace\, in Sri Lanka and the World
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next edition in the Fireside Peace Chats (FPC) series\, titled “Civil Society and Peace\, in Sri Lanka and the World”. In this session\, we welcome Sweta Velpillay\, a peacebuilding practitioner whose work focuses on creating alternative and equitable forms of global collaboration for peace. Sweta brings extensive experience advising peacebuilding programmes and portfolios for relevance and coherence\, with work spanning countries including Afghanistan\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Cambodia\, Ethiopia\, Iraq\, Kenya\, Lebanon\, Myanmar\, Nigeria\, Pakistan\, the Philippines\, South Sudan\, Sri Lanka\, and the UK (Northern Ireland). \n\n\n\nOriginally from Sri Lanka\, Sweta will reflect on her personal journey and evolving understanding of what it means to be part of civil society and committed to peace. Drawing from her current role at the international NGO Conducive Space for Peace\, she will speak about the dilemmas\, tensions\, and questions that have shaped her path in the peacebuilding field. \n\n\n\nThis edition of FPC will be\, as usual\, an open and honest conversation — touching on the situation in Sri Lanka\, the global state of civil society\, and what it truly takes to hold space for peace in today’s world. Sweta’s reflections will be grounded in real-world practice\, and the session will include time for dialogue and shared exploration. \n\n\n\nCome ready to listen\, reflect\, and engage in a meaningful exchange. \n\n\n\nMore About the Speaker: \n\n\n\nSweta Velpillay\, the Co-Director of Conducive Space for Peace (CSP)\, holds 19 years of experience in peacebuilding within fragile contexts grappling with humanitarian and development challenges. At CSP\, she leverages her understanding of the intricate dynamics of the global peacebuilding and aid system\, recognising their limitations in relation to centring local leadership\, towards transformative change of the system. \n\n\n\nModerator: Sever Džigurski \n\n\n\nMore about Fireside Peace Chats \n\n\n\nThe Fireside Peace Chats series is an event series consisting of informal\, intimate chats with peacebuilders who have either lived in for an extended period of time or are from conflict-affected environments. \n\n\n\nPlease note the following important information: \n\n\n\nBy registering\, you agree to your registration information being shared\, one time only\, with the partner organizations for this event: Leiden University College (LUC) and the Knowledge Platform for Security and Rule of Law (KPSRL). \n\n\n\nIf you register for this event and later are unable to attend\, please notify us or cancel your ticket so that we can account for your absence. \n\n\n\nBy registering for this event\, you consent to photos being taken during the event and potentially shared publicly online. \n\n\n\nRegistration implies consent to be contacted by partner organizations involved in this event (including for feedback\, schedule updates\, or relevant follow-up information). \n\n\n\nRegistration also provides us with consent to store your email address for the purpose of sending invitations to future Fireside Peace Chat events.

The goal was to foster learning by and among diverse actors in this field\, with a view\, ultimately\, to increasing the responsiveness and effectiveness of SROL policies and programs. \n\n\n\nOn 30 June 2025\, this project is coming to a close. In the run up to this moment\, this in-person closing event provides an opportunity for the Netherlands-based part of the network to reflect on key achievements and insights\, and chart pathways for continued learning in the SROL field. \n\n\n\nObjectives: Celebrate\, Reflect and Mobilize  \n\n\n\n–Celebrate: putting the spotlight on the many great contributions of the KPSRL network over the past years. SUMMARY:“The safe place was the one I left”: Centring mental health in displacement
DESCRIPTION:The end of a war is not the end of the story…   \n\n\n\nJoin us for a conversation inspired by The Lebanon Displacement Diaries This link opens in a new tab\, a participatory journalism project by The New Humanitarian that centres the voices of those uprooted by the recent war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. \n\n\n\nThrough the words of 10 displaced people\, as well as personal photos\, videos\, and illustrations\, the diaries document what it means to flee violence – and how life continues long after the headlines fade. One key takeaway for the team behind the project: the emotional toll of displacement is profound\, and often overlooked. \n\n\n\nTogether with practitioners and researchers involved in mental health\, protection and community-based responses\, the team behind The Lebanon Displacement Diaries will reflect on how the aid sector can better support the emotional and psychosocial needs of those living through prolonged crises – and what meaningful insights the project can bring to humanitarian action in Lebanon and beyond. \n\n\n\nThe event will be moderated by Annie Slemrod\, director and editor\, The Lebanon Displacement Diaries\, Middle East editor\, The New Humanitarian\, who is joined by: \n\n\n\nMona Sawli\, mental health and psychological support field officer in Lebanon\, ICRC \n\n\n\nSarah Mawed\, Gender-based violence protection officer at Danish Refugee Council \n\n\n\nZainab Chamoun\, coordinator\, Lebanon Displacement Diaries\, journalist and researcher \n\n\n\nJasmin Lilian Diab\, director\, Institute for Migration Studies\, Lebanese American University
