SUMMARY:Children in armed conflict: The protective role of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Children and other institutional responses
DESCRIPTION:During this event co-organized at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) by Save the Children and the Legal Mobilization Platform with The Hague Humanitarian Studies Centre\, panellists will discuss how the rights of children affected by armed conflict have been violated\, the role of the UN Committee on the Rights of Children to try and address these violations and what still needs to be done\, particularly at an institutional level.  \n\n\n\n© Cartoonistarif (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Children_in_war.jpg)\n\n\n\nChildren tend to bear the greatest brunt of any armed conflict and their human rights violated\, despite many decades of efforts by states\, international organizations and NGOs to try and prevent this.  According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)\, 2024 was one of the very worst years in recent history for children affected by armed conflict. This includes children being killed and injured\, missing school\, being denied life-saving vaccines and critically malnourishment.  \n\n\n\nWhile an estimated 1 in 6 children live in a situation of armed conflict\, in the past year these conflicts have been especially intense in the Democratic Republic of Congo\, Haiti\, Lebanon\, Myanmar\, Gaza (Palestine)\, Ukraine and Sudan.  \n\n\n\nThis event is an opportunity to critically focus on the role of various actors\, including Humanitarian NGOs and the United Nations Committee on Children’s Rights\, regarding children in armed conflict and the challenges in addressing these institutional gaps at supra-national\, state and local levels\, through the expertise of three well-known experts. \n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\nTo inform this discussion\, we will be joined by Ann Skelton\, who is Professor of Children’s Rights in a Sustainable World at Leiden University and UNESCO Chair at the University of Pretorial as well as being a Member and outgoing Chair of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child since 2017. After being re-elelected for a second term\, her tenure on the Committee ended on 28 February 2025. \n\n\n\nWe will also be joined by Aurélie Lamazière\, who is a Senior Programme Manager at Save the Children International. Based in Geneva\, she leads and coordinates the organization’s work on accountability for grave violations affecting children in armed conflicts.   \n\n\n\nThe discussion will be moderated by Karin Arts\, who is Professor of International Law and Development at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam. There will also be an opportunity for the audience to pose questions. \n\n\n\nJeff Handmaker\, Associate Professor of Legal Sociology at the ISS and member of the Legal Mobilization Platform\, will say some opening words and Pim Kraan\, Director of Save the Children Netherlands will close the event. \n\n\n\nOrganizers \n\n\n\nThe event is organized by the Legal Mobilization Platform\, The Hague Humanitarian Studies Centre (both based at ISS) and Save the Children.

SUMMARY:The State as a Humanitarian Actor: What will the post-liberal humanitarian system look like?
DESCRIPTION:In this hybrid Humanitarian Studies Centre and Humanitarian Governance seminar\, Dr Oscar A. Gómez will critically confront the strong anti-State bias inherent in the liberal humanitarian system. \n\n\n\nBased on the assumptions of incapacity or unwillingness to meet humanitarian needs\, humanitarian studies primarily focus on non-state actors. This is problematic for several reasons\, as it perpetuates the colonial structure of humanitarianism\, wherein wealthy Western states act as benefactors through (also Western) non-state humanitarian actors who assist the weak and wicked rest.  \n\n\n\nDr Oscar A. Gómez will argue that any attempt to salvage humanitarianism from its colonial past and present necessitates recognizing and scrutinizing the state’s role as a humanitarian actor.  \n\n\n\nSo\, what kind of humanitarian actor is the State? What are its characteristics? How does it reshape our understanding of humanitarian action?  \n\n\n\nHe will present the case study of Colombia and its enduring struggle with multiple humanitarian needs to address these questions through both discourse and practice. In light of fundamental changes in international humanitarianism\, he will propose a profile of the State as a humanitarian actor\, outlining its primary features and implications for the future of humanitarianism.

SUMMARY:Shaping Collective Action for the Humanitarian Emergency in Sudan
DESCRIPTION:About this event \n\n\n\nJoin us for a Critical Dialogue reflecting on the role of diverse actors engaged in complex humanitarian contexts\, in particular the urgent and deteriorating situation in Sudan. With decreasing foreign aid\, we have a moral imperative to find alternative solutions to counter the rampant abuse and famine while assessing and mitigating risks. The aim of this session is to examine and explore the current and potentially increasing role of Netherlands-based actors\, including the private sector\, in responding to humanitarian crises. Recently the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Trade & Development published a Policy Letter emphasizing private sector-led initiatives\, specifically in food security and economic resilience in Sudan. This session will reflect on the implications for cross-sectorial collaboration moving forward. \n\n\n\nThis Dialogue will examine risks and possibilities\, including how different kinds of investments and engagement can be coordinated and leveraged\, while elevating and building from the existing efforts on the ground in Sudan. The Critical Dialogue aims to engage the diversity of actors in The Hague\, a city which convenes a broad ecosystem of actors in peace\, justice and humanitarian aid. \n\n\n\nThe expected outcome of the dialogue is a number of timely and forward-thinking considerations on decision making in response to the situation in Sudan nationally from the perspective of the Netherlands\, and in turn influencing international actors. We will record the outcomes of this Dialogue and invite follow-on ideas and engagement. \n\n\n\nProgramme \n\n\n\nScene setting panel \n\n\n\nThe panel will convene private sector actors\, humanitarian organisations\, financial institutions and ministry representatives to discuss risk assessment and in humanitarian crises focusing on Sudan. \n\n\n\nFacilitated dialogue \n\n\n\nThrough facilitated dialogue and breakouts the participants will engage in further critical discussions assessing risk within their roles\, envisioned partnerships based on Dutch policy brief. \n\n\n\nIntended target group \n\n\n\nThis event is intended for private sector actors and professionals who have some experience of humanitarian contexts and/ or working in/ with Sudan. \n\n\n\nThe event is organised with the input of humanitarian organisations. Prior to the event\, we will compile a list of sources on the current situation in Sudan to inform the dialogue. \n\n\n\nMore about Critical Dialogues \n\n\n\nIn line with the Humanity Hub’s mission to support and strengthen The Hague’s peace and justice ecosystem\, we aim to create a space to foster reflection and introspection as well as collaboration and action on shared challenges and marginalised topics. By bringing together diverse actors\, we create space to examine prevailing narratives\, explore cross-sectoral solutions\, and amplify underrepresented voices. These dialogues aim to strengthen collective action and shape more inclusive and effective approaches to global challenges. \n\n\n\nIf you register for this event and later are unable to attend\, please notify us or cancel your tickets so that we can account for your absence. \n\n\n\nWe may take photographs\, videos\, and recordings at our events for promotional purposes (e.g.\, on our website and social media). If you do not wish to appear in media\, please inform the event organizers upon arrival\, and you’ll be given a distinctive tag indicating your preference.

SUMMARY:Bijeenkomst pensioenregeling Partos & PwC
DESCRIPTION:Alle werkgevers moeten hun pensioenregeling aanpassen vanwege nieuwe pensioenwetgeving.

SUMMARY:Trauma and Memory: Intergenerational Memories of the Siege of Sarajevo
DESCRIPTION:Image by Pasanheco on Envato\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganised by: Leiden University College\, Hague Humanity Hub & Knowledge Platform Security & Rule of Law \n\n\n\nJoin us for the next edition in the Fireside Peace Chats event series! This edition focuses on themes of trauma and memory with guest speaker Emina Zoletic from the University of Warsaw.  \n\n\n\nEmina will talk about the Siege of Sarajevo\, which lasted from 5th April 1992 to 29th February 1996. Emina’s research engages with issues of national\, cultural\, and ethnic identity and postwar memories\, which intersect with traumatic memories and social justice issues. The central part of this research explores intergenerational war memories in Sarajevo and diasporic families across several locations in the EU and the USA. \n\n\n\nLooking at local and transnational dimensions\, it was essential to show how intergenerational transmission of war memories is processed\, experienced\, reshaped\, and activated by research interlocutors 30 years after the war. How is the siege of Sarajevo remembered by those who directly experienced it? How do war and migration memories play out in family and broader social\, political\, and cultural contexts? Looking at two groups helped the research to determine the influence of the broader victimhood narratives and how they are mediated through diaspora groups. Emina’s research demonstrates how\, on the level of family units\, there is a persistent inability to process and deal with traumatic memories in a space where re-traumatisation is ongoing\, which affects the meaning-making processes. \n\n\n\nThis Edition’s Guest Speaker\n\n\n\nEmina Zoletic is a doctoral candidate at the University of Warsaw\, Centre for research social memories.  She is currently doing a CEEPUS fellowship (March-June) at the University of Vienna Institute of Sociology. She was a Fulbright visiting researcher at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs\, New York\, from 2023 to 2024. She leverages her background in psychology and a decade of clinical experience to focus on families from Sarajevo whose older members survived the war in Bosnia and their children born after the war.  \n\n\n\nMore About Fireside Peace Chats\n\n\n\nThe Fireside Peace Chats series is an event series consisting of informal\, intimate chats with peacebuilders who have either lived in for an extended period of time or are from conflict-affected environments. Fireside Peace Chats are a joint initiative of Leiden University College The Hague (LUC)\, Knowledge Platform for Security and Rule of the Law (KPSRL)\, and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH)\, with an aim to open a space where practice\, research and policy in peacebuilding come together in an informal way\, through experience of people on the ground. This initiative aims to contribute to a locally informed paradigm shift in liberal peacebuilding.

SUMMARY:The Political Unconscious of Global China Studies "The Taiwan Consensus and the Ethos of Area Studies: Spectral Transitions"
DESCRIPTION:Image by Leungchopan on Envato\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for the next edition of the Fireside Peace Chats event series\, titled “The Political Unconcious of Global China Studies\,” in which we will discuss his recent work The Taiwan Consensus and the Ethos of Area Studies: Spectral Transitions. \n\n\n\nThe reason why consideration of the political unconscious in relation to transitions is essential to the discussion of Global China Studies is that the “apparatus of area” in which Global China Studies participates and of which it is an exemplary instance is ultimately a means for “managing\,” in a rather large and abstract sense\, both the meaning and the process of transition. The Taiwan Consensus and the Ethos of Area Studies: Spectral Transitions constitutes a timely intervention into debates over the status of Taiwan\, at a moment when discussions of democracy and autocracy\, imperialism and agency\, unipolarity and multipolarity\, dominate the intellectual agenda of the day. Pursuing a parallel trajectory that is both epistemic and historical\, that is traced out in relation both to Taiwan’s recent history and to the disparate forms of knowledge production about that history\, this work engages in scholarly debate about some of the burning issues of our time\, including transitional justice\, hegemony and conspiracy in the digital age\, debt regimes\, cultural difference\, national language\, and the traumatic legacies of war\, colonialism\, anticommunism\, antiblackness\, and neoliberalism.  \n\n\n\nThis Edition’s Guest Speaker\n\n\n\nJon Douglas Solomon is a professor in the Department of Chinese Literature\, Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 and a researcher attached to the Centre de Recherches Plurilingues et Multidisciplinaires\, Université Paris Nanterre. His publications have focused on the biopolitics of translation\, developing a critique of the disciplinary divisions of the Humanities in their relation to the economic and political divisions of the postcolonial world. Recent publications include a book in Chinese about the 2019 Hong Kong anti-ELAB movement\, A Genealogy of Defeat of the Left: Translation\, Transition\, and Bordering in the anti-ELAB Movement in Hong Kong\, and an article in English titled Logistical Species and Translational Process: A Critique of the Colonial—Imperial Modernity that appeared in the Montreal-based journal Intermédialités. More information about his 2023 book The Taiwan Consensus and the Ethos of Area Studies: Spectral Transitions is available here.

SUMMARY:Expert Meeting on the Humanitarian Crisis in Eastern DRC (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:Image by Stichting Vluchteling\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing the conversation on the 6th of March this year\, KUNO organises this meeting to take stock of the challenges in responding to the humanitarian needs in the region.  \n\n\n\nAbout the event\n\n\n\nSince the rapid offensive by M23 rebels and the seizure of Goma and Bukavu\, the Eastern DRC is experiencing a severe\, escalated humanitarian crisis. UNHCR reports that some million people are estimated to be displaced in North and South Kivu. Sexual and gender-based violence has surged alarmingly. The Congolese government and M23 have both just pledged to commit to work towards peace\, although it remains unclear what this directly means for the support of the affected people.  \n\n\n\nTopics for discussion\n\n\n\n– Overview of humanitarian access and challenges in reaching populations in situations of vulnerability in Eastern Congo– The impact of the current situation on NGOS’ security and safety– Outlook on the future– The impact of the current situation on Congolese organisations and how they have had to adapt their operations to address current needs– The impact of the conflict on women and conflict related sexual violence (CRSV) \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n-International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO) \n\n\n\n-Concert d’Actions pour les Jeunes et Enfants Défavorisés (CAJED) \n\n\n\n-Third speaker tbc \n\n\n\nThis session will be moderated by Kiza Magendane\, an independent writer\, political scientist\, and social entrepreneur. SUMMARY:Rules for a lawless world? The international legal order in an age of great-power struggle for normative primacy
DESCRIPTION:This lecture is part of the symposium ‘Rules for a Lawless World?’\, which explores the state and future of the international legal order in an age of great-power rivalry. \n\n\n\nThe symposium explores the consequences of the struggle for global normative primacy between China and the USA and their respective allies\, for the prospect of a law-governed world\, or its potential collapse. Focusing on the ordering\, protective and emancipatory functions of international law\, it seeks to grasp the state and direction of the international legal order—whether we are witnessing the breakdown of existing legal norms\, their pervasive violation\, or their replacement with alternative standards. Ultimately\, the symposium probes how great-power rivalry affects humanity’s aspiration for a world ruled by the force of law\, and not the law of force. \n\n\n\nKeynote Speakers\n\n\n\nAgnès Callamard\, Secretary General at Amnesty InternationalDr Agnès Callamard is Secretary General at Amnesty International. She leads the organization’s human rights work and is its chief spokesperson. She is responsible for providing overall leadership of the International Secretariat\, including setting the strategic direction for the organisation and managing relations with Amnesty International’s national entities. In 2016\, she was appointed as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extra-judicial\, summary or arbitrary killings. Along with her UN work\, she was also the Director of Global Freedom of Expression at Columbia University in New York.  \n\n\n\nFrancesca Albanese\, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories (Online)Ms. Francesca Albanese is an international lawyer\, specialised in human rights and the Middle East.
