SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night: For Sama
DESCRIPTION:For Human Rights Day\, in collaboration with KUNO\, we are presenting the critically acclaimed film For Sama. This event is part of the Just Peace Movie Nights series\, a program that uses film and storytelling to bring important issues around peace and justice to the attention of a wide audience. After the film screening\, we will engage in a discussion with experts on topics such as the context of the Syrian conflict during the shooting of the film\, the current humanitarian and refugee crisis in Syria\, and the political situation in the Netherlands\, including cabinet plans to declare parts of Syria safe and return Syrian asylum seekers. \n\n\n\nAbout For Sama \n\n\n\nFor Sama is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter\, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life during five years of the uprising in Aleppo\, Syria. She falls in love\, marries and gives birth to Sama\, all while catastrophic conflict erupts around her. Her camera captures incredible stories of loss\, laughter and survival as Waad struggles with an impossible choice – whether to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life\, while leaving means giving up the fight for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much. \n\n\n\nSpeakers to be announced soon. \n\n\n\nProgram \n\n\n\nDoors open at 19:00\, and refreshments will be available in the café. The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A. After the official program\, we cordially invite attendees to stay for informal networking and drinks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Unlocking Climate Finance: the Role of Civil Society in promoting Accountability and Accessibility on a National Level
DESCRIPTION:Climate finance plays a crucial role in addressing climate change\, but ensuring that these financial resources are used effectively\, transparently\, and equitably is a complex challenge. It is therefore essential to track climate finance on a national level and hold governments accountable for its spending. At the national level\, civil society organizations in the Global South are uniquely positioned to monitor climate finance flows\, advocate for accountability\, and push for equitable access to funding for those who are most affected by climate change.   \n\n\n\nIn this upcoming learning session\, Partos will explore the role of civil society in the Global South in tracking climate finance flows and holding their governments accountable. They will discuss questions like:   \n\n\n\n\nHow can we support civil society in holding governments accountable for just climate finance on a national level?  \n\n\n\nHow can we strengthen civil society to promote equitable access to climate finance? \n\n\n\n\nWhat to expect  \n\n\n\nWe will learn about the key takeaways of a study done by Oxfam Novib on climate finance accountability in Uganda\, Nigeria and Vietnam. Subsequently\, we will dive into the experiences of the Voices of Just Climate Action program in promoting access to climate finance and strengthening civil society. We will also reflect on the outcomes of the COP 29 and what they mean for climate finance accessibility and accountability. There will be plenty of time to discuss successful approaches\, challenges and opportunities to amplify and strengthen each other’s work. After this in-person session\, there will be networking drinks so don’t miss out!   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:The Erosion of Facts in U.S. Politics: Implications for Foreign Policy and International Cooperation
DESCRIPTION:In an era increasingly defined by misinformation and ideological narratives\, the role of facts in shaping U.S. politics—both domestically and internationally—is under scrutiny. The 2024 presidential election\, marked by polarization and post-truthism\, raises pressing questions about the state of truth in governance and diplomacy. To what extent do facts still guide U.S. politics? How do these dynamics influence global alliances\, democracy promotion\, and international cooperation? \n\n\n\nThis event explores these questions\, examining how fact-based governance—or its decline—impacts NATO cohesion\, U.S.-China relations\, and human rights advocacy. We will consider the consequences for U.S. credibility and multilateral collaboration\, as well as parallels in Europe\, drawing lessons to bolster democratic resilience and institutional effectiveness. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Rule of Law Training
DESCRIPTION:The Matra Rule of Law Training Programme is designed to strengthen institutional capacity in the field of rule of law within government organisations in Albania\, Armenia\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Georgia\, Kosovo\, Moldova\, Montenegro\, North Macedonia\, Serbia\, Türkiye\, and Ukraine. Each year we offer (hybrid) training courses\, providing participants with insights into best practices across a wide range of rule of law topics. \n\n\n\nThrough interactive sessions that blend theory with practical skills\, as well as study visits\, our programme equips policy advisors\, members of the judiciary and other civil servants working in the government and justice sectors with the knowledge and skills needed to drive reforms within their respective countries. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, by taking part in the training programme\, participants become part of a large international network of alumni\, lecturers and public institutions in the Netherlands and in the target countries. This network serves as a platform for learning\, exchange and collaboration. \n\n\n\nThe Matra Rule of Law Training Programme is designed and delivered by the Netherlands Helsinki Committee\, Leiden Law School and The Hague Academy for Local Governance. It is financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands\, and administered by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) on behalf of the Ministry. For questions relating to the Matra Rule of Law Training Programme please contact us via matrarolt@nhc.nl \n\n\n\nThe following hybrid training courses are on offer in 2024-2025: \n\n\n\nIn 2024-2025 the following hybrid training courses are offered: \n\n\n\n1. Administration of Justice (full brochure) \n\n\n\nThis training will focus on the “judicial” dimension of Chapter 23. The training will focus on the fundamental principles of judicial organisation under the EU acquis – with a special focus on the case law of the EU Court of Justice – and groundbreaking case law of the European Court of Human Rights. Participants will also learn about best practices in the administration of justice in the Netherlands\, and the organisation and functioning of the judiciary. Participants will be introduced to the concept of independence and impartiality as developed in the robust case law of the European Court of Human Rights. Participants will discuss the legal framework regarding the principles of accountability and independence and the application of these principles; judicial culture as a backdrop against which courts function; the role of judicial councils and the role of precedent in legal practice. \n\n\n\nThis training will be held online from 02 to 13 December 2024 and will be held in-person from 20-31 January 2025. Applications are now closed. \n\n\n\n2. Integrity of Civil Servants (full brochure) \n\n\n\nPublic integrity is a core value of the European vision on good governance. It is essential for a well-functioning and transparent government\, and an important precondition for economic growth. This training will help participants developing integrity policies\, in order to ensure transparency\, accountability\, efficiency and ethical behaviour within government institutions. \n\n\n\nThis training will focus on three pillars of public integrity as defined by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD): system\, culture and accountability. Participants will discuss international and European standards\, while also learning about examples and practices from the Netherlands. How are integrity policies designed\, implemented and enforced? \n\n\n\nThis training will be held online from 27 January – 07 February 2025 and will be held in-person from 10 – 21 March 2025. \n\n\n\n3. Public Procurement (full brochure) \n\n\n\nThe acquis on public procurement includes general principles of transparency\, free movement of goods\, and non-discrimination. In addition\, specific EU rules apply for the coordination of awarding public works contracts\, services and supplies. Government contracts are of great economic and strategic importance and it is therefore necessary that systems are designed in such a way that conflicts of interest and corruption are prevented as much as possible. \n\n\n\nWith this training\, we want to increase knowledge of European regulations in the field of public procurement by looking at Dutch and international experience with regard to legitimacy and integrity of the purchasing process. Strong\, independent institutions protect the integrity of the system. This prevents inappropriate political or economic influence. This training also pays attention to gender responsive and transformative public procurement\, showing casing how public procurement can contribute to increasing gender equality. \n\n\n\nThis training will be held online from 27 January – 07 February 2025 and will be held in-person from 10 – 21 March 2025. \n\n\n\n4. Management of Public Services (full brochure) \n\n\n\nThis training addresses the question of how the public sector can be better organised to enable good public services. We look at the public sector from the perspective of multi-level governance: cooperation and coordination between multiple layers of government\, non-government actors and citizens for effective and efficient public services. Challenges surrounding decentralisation and privatisation (including public-private partnerships) are discussed\, including the financing of services. We also discuss the potential of digitalisation to make services more efficient\, transparent and accessible\, as well as accompanying challenges – for example regarding privacy\, data security and the digital divide. We discuss the importance of good personnel policy for well-functioning public institutions and services. We look at issues such as merit-based selection and promotion\, transparent performance assessments and offering training and development opportunities to government officials. \n\n\n\nThis training will be held online from 12 to 23 May 2025\, and in-person from 09 to 20 June 2025. Click here to apply. \n\n\n\n5. Management of Borders (full brochure) \n\n\n\nAll Matra countries share common challenges when it comes to migration\, asylum\, border management and organised transnational crime. The Western Balkans and Turkey are located on the crossroads of migration routes from conflict areas to EU member states\, while Armenia\, Georgia\, Moldova and Ukraine share common challenges in the field of border management and adjusting national legislation in order to meet the EU acquis. \n\n\n\nIn this training\, participants will strengthen their knowledge of EU asylum law and its interpretation by European courts. Sessions will be dedicated to the EU acquis\, including the EU return and readmission policy. In the field of border management\, participants will learn about Schengen legislation and the mandate of Frontex\, whiles sessions will also be held on the fight against organised crime. \n\n\n\nThe training will be held online from 12 to 23 May 2025 and in-person from 09 to 20 June 2025. Click here to apply. \n\n\n\n6. Human Rights \n\n\n\nDepending on the selected participants\, this training can be used in a number of ways to address fundamental and human rights. All government policy initiatives must be monitored for their impact on (human) rights and there must be mechanisms for monitoring and correcting practices that conflict with these rights. This training looks at mechanisms and policies that can be used to (better) safeguard internationally agreed human rights standards. Together with Dutch institutions active in this area\, we will exchange practical experiences with the participants and encourage them to reflect on the situation in their own country. \n\n\n\nThis training will be held online from 15 to 26 September 2025\, and in-person from 6 to 17 October 2025. \n\n\n\n7. (Functioning of) Democratic Institutions \n\n\n\nWell-functioning institutions that guarantee democracy\, the rule of law and human rights are essential for preserving the EU’s identity and values. They must guarantee and safeguard fundamental rights and freedoms. In this training we not only look at international standards (the role of the Venice Commission and the Council of Europe)\, but also at practice: how can civil servants themselves contribute to democratic policy and decision-making and increasing confidence in the government? How can organisations work more transparently? And how can the distance between the government and the citizen be reduced? \n\n\n\nThis training will be held online from 10 to 21 November 2025\, and in-person from 01 to 12 December 2025. \n\n\n\nThese training was held in 2023-2024: \n\n\n\nJudicial Cooperation \n\n\n\nIn this training we look at the importance of collaboration within the justice sector\, both at a national and international level. We will tailor the programme specifically based on the sectors in which the selected participants work. For example\, we look at the ways in which international cooperation between judges works (recognition of foreign judgments\, transfer of suspects). Regarding the enforcement of sentences\, we look at chain cooperation\, in which the fundamental values and standards of the EU are central. For example\, within criminal law\, the right balance must be found between punishment\, reintegration and the protection of victims and society. When it comes to punishment\, we will highlight the value of alternative sanctions to prison sentences. Within this training we pay special attention to cooperation between civil servants and civil society\, because Dutch chain cooperation within criminal law between government parties and civil society is highly developed and is often a revelation for experts from other countries. \n\n\n\nThis training was held online from 11 to 22 November 2024\, and in-person from 1 to 14 December 2024. \n	Register Here This link opens in a new tab\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Benjamin Ferencz Lecture - Sights\, sounds\, and sensibilities of atrocity prosecutions: the sensory experience of justice
DESCRIPTION:Justice for massive human rights abuses is deeply intertwined with our sensory experiences—what we see\, hear\, touch\, taste\, and smell. These senses shape how atrocities are perceived\, remembered\, condemned\, and ultimately judged by legal systems across the world. From the sights of courtroom proceedings to the sounds of witness testimony\, the sensory dimensions of justice play a crucial role in the prosecution and condemnation of atrocities. However\, the role of these sensory experiences is often overlooked in discussions about legal accountability and the pursuit of justice. \n\n\n\nThis lecture and panel discussion will focus on the ways in which justice\, human rights abuses\, and sensory experience intersect\, as explored in Sights\, Sounds\, and Sensibilities of Atrocity Prosecutions\, edited by Mark Drumbl and Caroline Fournet (Brill | Nijhoff). The conversation will explore how different societies and legal systems have conceptualised and experienced justice for atrocity crimes throughout history\, from the post-World War II tribunals to contemporary international courts\, and will delve into how what we perceive through our senses affects the legal processes that address large-scale human rights violations and atrocities.  \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\nProf. Mark A. Drumbl\, Washington and Lee University\n\n\n\nProf. Caroline Fournet\, University of Exeter\n\n\n\n\nDiscussants: \n\n\n\n\nProf. Barbora Hola\, VU Amsterdam\n\n\n\nSimon Meisenberg\, Kosovo Specialist Chambers \n\n\n\n\nModerator \n\n\n\nDr Gabrielė Chlevickaitė\, Researcher\, T.M.C. SUMMARY:Webinar: The role of faith leaders in peace-building
DESCRIPTION:Interfaith Harmony Week is observed each year during the first week of February after it was first suggested by King Abdullah II of Jordan to the United Nations 15 years ago and adopted by the UN General Assembly. During this week\, various governments\, NGOs\, faith leaders and others use this week to promote goodwill and harmony between different religions. \n\n\n\nTherefore\, The London Story\, together with the Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) convene faith leaders from across the world to share their experiences using their roles to address religiously charged conflicts in their communities. They will speak on their experiences\, the conflicts they face(d) in their local settings\, and the continued challenges to interfaith harmony there. We also invite academics and members of civil society to discuss challenges to interfaith harmony and the complex threats posed to freedom of religion or belief in various contexts. The event ends with a round of Q&A from the audience. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome; the choice of timing and format was made consciously to accommodate a diverse audience with different experiences with religiously motivated or inflamed conflicts\, peace-building\, and interfaith dialogue. Are these topics of interest to you? Please join and share with others! A recording will also be made available after the event.

SUMMARY:Panel discussion - Climate on trial: lessons from the Milieudefensie versus Shell case
DESCRIPTION:On 12 November 2024\, the The Hague Court of Appeal delivered a complex judgment in the Milieudefensie v. Shell This link opens in a new tab climate litigation case\, setting aside the groundbreaking 2021 District Court ruling.  \n\n\n\nAt issue in the appeal was whether Shell must have reduced its CO2 emissions by 45% in 2030 compared to 2019. The court of appeal ruled that Shell is obliged to reduce its CO₂ emissions\, but that it was unable to determine which percentage should apply. The court of appeal therefore rejected the claims of Milieudefensie. \n\n\n\nWhile the appeal judgment may not have delivered the decisive victory climate activists sought\, it offers significant insights into developing judicial attitudes towards corporate responsibility for climate change.  \n\n\n\nJoin the Asser Institute and SEVEN – the Climate Institute (University of Amsterdam) This link opens in a new tab – for a critical examination of this pivotal legal moment in climate litigation. This panel discussion will dissect the implications of the Court of Appeal’s judgment from different angles and explore its significance for future climate accountability strategies.  \n\n\n\nThe Court of Appeal’s judgment\, while not a straightforward victory\, provides critical lessons for how corporations might be held responsible for their climate impact. The case highlighted that while Shell was not legally compelled to meet a specific 45% emissions reduction target\, states and private actors have a shared responsibility under international human rights law to combat climate change that can influence private law obligations. \n\n\n\nNotably\, the judgment coincides with the European Union’s newly adopted Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive\, which will significantly reshape how companies like Shell must approach their climate transition strategies. This directive represents a crucial legal framework that will guide corporate climate responsibilities in the coming years.  \n\n\n\nThe event will explore key themes emerging from the judgment\, including:  \n\n\n\n\nThe shared responsibilities of states and private actors in addressing climate change \n\n\n\nThe horizontal effect of human rights obligations on corporate conduct \n\n\n\nThe evolving legal landscape of corporate climate accountability and the use of strategic litigation \n\n\n\nThe role of international guidelines and emerging EU directives in shaping corporate climate strategies \n\n\n\n\nThere will be a short presentation of the case\, followed by a round of questions facilitated by the moderator\, and an exchange with the room. For those attending in person\, there will be a drinks reception after the event.  \n\n\n\nIn-person and online participation is available. \n\n\n\nModerator:Stephanie Triefus (Asser Institute) This link opens in a new tab  This link opens in a new tab \n\n\n\nSpeakers:  \n\n\n\n\nAndre Nollkaemper – founder of SEVEN (University of Amsterdam) This link opens in a new tab\n\n\n\nSjoukje van Oosterhout – Senior team lead of the climate case against Shell (Milieudefensie) This link opens in a new tab \n\n\n\n\n\nAnneloes Kuiper (Utrecht University) This link opens in a new tab\n\n\n\nChiara Macchi (Wageningen University & Research) This link opens in a new tab (online) \n\n\n\n\nThis event is supported by the Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Kick off Meeting Dutch Data for Development Mapping
DESCRIPTION:Partos\, the Dutch Enterprise Agency (RVO)\, and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DGIS) are delighted to invite you to the kick-off meeting of the Dutch Digital for Development (D4D) mapping on the 18th of February. This study aims to identify Dutch activities and projects implemented by Dutch NGOs and their partners using digitalisation to increase their impact. \n\n\n\nAbout the mapping\n\n\n\nMany Dutch Civil Society Organisations apply Digital tools and solutions to make their work more impactful\, smart and effective. Yet\, there is not a clear overview of all the Digital for Development initiatives. The main goal of this study is to identify the Dutch actors and initiatives in the field of D4D. This mapping will allow to develop a roadmap with the purpose to promote Dutch excellence in the European D4D Hub and the Global Gateway. \n\n\n\nThe event\n\n\n\nIn this context\, a kick-off meeting is organised to inform Dutch NGOs about the study and to ask for their participation (needs) in the mapping exercise. And to facilitate exchange\, a number of organisations will pitch their digital solutions. \n\n\n\nRegister now for the kick-off meeting\n\n\n\nThis event is only open for Partos members and Dutch NGOs working actively on Data & Digitalisation. Because of the limited number of seats\, please do note that organisations can send only one participant. Registrations are open till Friday February 14th.

Hosted at The Hague Humanity Hub\, this is the place for you to get away from your busy schedule and enjoy after-hours with purposeful conversations. \nWhat can you expect? \nCome to the Hub on Tuesday\, February 18th\, between 17:00 and 19:00 for a drink (or two) and meet professionals who are working towards a more peaceful and just world. Come to the Community Drinks\, relax\, and join this vibrant community committed to making our world fairer and more just – one connection at a time. \nWho are the spotlight speakers? \nWhite Helmets Foundation \nThe White Helmets Foundation was founded in 2013 in Syria by a diverse group of volunteers. The aim was to respond to aerial and land bombings and reduce the gap left by the Syrian regime’s withdrawal of basic government services like firefighting and healthcare. The group of volunteers was expanded to 3300 female and male volunteers and strives to save civilian lives and help the communities recover from the impact of the war. This presentation will be given by Diana Khayyata. \nTurquoise Mountain \nTurquoise Mountain supports artisans where their traditions are under threat. The organisation started in 2006 with reviving the Old City of Kabul by clearing it of rubble to reveal the magnificent historic neighbourhood. SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night: Porcelain War
DESCRIPTION:Join Just Peace and the Embassy of Ukraine for a special film screening of the award-winning documentary PORCELAIN WAR\, dedicated to the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Through the power of cinema\, we reflect on resilience\, solidarity\, and the enduring fight for freedom. This event is more than just a screening – it is a space to come together\, honour Ukraine’s struggle\, and show that support knows no borders. \n\n\n\nThe Movie – Porcelain War\n\n\n\nNominated for the 2025 Academy Awards\, this incredible documentary will land in the city of Peace and Justice as a last stop before the Oscars\, to share the incredible story of resilience through art and marking the third anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine. \n\n\n\nAmidst the chaos and destruction of the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine\, three artists defiantly find inspiration and beauty as they defend their culture and their country. In a war waged by professional soldiers against ordinary civilians\, Slava Leontyev\, Anya Stasenko and Andrey Stefanov choose to stay behind\, armed with their art\, their cameras and\, for the first time in their lives\, their guns. Despite daily shelling\, Anya finds resistance and purpose in her art\, Andrey takes the dangerous journey to get his young family to safety abroad\, and Slava becomes a weapons instructor for ordinary people who have become unlikely soldiers. As the war intensifies\, Andrey picks up his camera to film their story\, and on tiny porcelain figurines\, Anya and Slava capture their idyllic past\, uncertain present and hope for the future. \n\n\n\nCo-directed by Leontyev and Brendan Bellomo\, with extraordinary footage from first-time cinematographer Stefanov\, Porcelain War embodies the passion and fight that only an artist can put back into the world when it’s crumbling around them. \n\n\n\nProgram and Highlights\n\n\n\n16:30 -17:30 Welcome Reception\, Ukrainian Bites and Networking \n\n\n\n17.30-19.15 Movie Screening \n\n\n\n19.15-19.45 Dialogue \n\n\n\n20.00 Event Ends \n\n\n\nOpening remarks by The Ukranian Chargé d’affaires Anatolii Solovei. \n\n\n\nAdditional remarks: \n\n\n\n\nJill Wilkinson\, Managing Director of the Hague Humanity Hub\n\n\n\nRepresentatives from the Municipality of the Hague\n\n\n\n\nDialogue \n\n\n\nJust Peace Movie Nights are an opportunity to bring meaningful themes of peace and Justice to life in the Hague and to reflect on important issues together. \n\n\n\nThe movie screening will be followed by a 30-minute dialogue\, featuring the perspectives of the protagonists of the movie\, the filmmakers and experts working in the field of protecting art and cultural identity in times of war. \n\n\n\nSpeakers to be confirmed as they are set to travel from Ukraine for the occasion.

It affects soldiers\, men\, brothers\, women\, infants\, artists\, and poets who will never create new works again\, as well as the youth whose future has been stolen. All Ukrainian compositions will receive their Dutch premieres during this concert. \n\n\n\nComplementing these contemporary pieces are classical works that inspire hope for the triumph of light: Mozart’s Ave verum corpus\, a serene meditation on grace and redemption\, and Beethoven’s Egmont Overture\, a powerful testament to the struggle against political oppression and the ultimate victory of freedom and self-determination. \n\n\n\nKyiv Symphony Orchestra \n\n\n\nAndrii Murza\, violin \n\n\n\nOlha Diadiv\, soprano \n\n\n\nOksana Lyniv\, conductor \n\n\n\nProgramme: \n\n\n\n\nEvgeni Orkin – “5 Interrupted Lullabies” (15 min)\n\n\n\n\n\nA symphonic portrayal of the night in March 2024 in Odesa\, when a missile attack on a residential area claimed the lives of four children and a baby. SUMMARY:Ensuring humanitarian accountability: Lessons in success and failure from climate-related displaced communities in Bangladesh
DESCRIPTION:In this Hum-Gov webinar\, PhD Researcher Hyeonggeun Ji and AOSED Executive Director Shamim Arfeen will discuss humanitarian accountability from the perspective of climate-related displaced communities in rural Bangladesh.  \n\n\n\nThey will discuss issues around corruption in emergency aid\, the role of village leaders in manipulating aid resources\, the problem of corruption reporting in close-knit communities\, and more besides.  \n\n\n\nWithin the communities studied\, a surer method for ensuring accountability seems to be through direct and indirect trust-based connections between displaced people and (civic) humanitarian agencies.  \n\n\n\nThe discussion will further underline the need for adopting a context-specific approach to humanitarian accountability\, the role of social networks\, and the specific complexities of ensuring accountability in rural Bangladesh. \n\n\n\nThe webinar will include a presentation by Hyeonggeun Ji\, a reflection by Shamim Arfeen and time for a Q&A with the speakers at the end.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - 'Lens on law: Edges of proximity'
DESCRIPTION:The T.M.C. Asser Instituut and the Royal Academy of Art The Hague (KABK) proudly present ‘Lens on law: Edges of proximity’ – a collective exhibition that explores the intersection of international law and visual arts. Opening on Friday 28 February 2025\, the show in West Den Haag features work by three emerging photography artists who have collaborated with international law researchers to artistically reflect on complex legal concepts. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition by three 4th year KABK photography students\, Daria Radu\, Anastasia Troshkova and Salome Erni\, tackles\, questions and translates systems of justice\, legal frameworks and institutions of juridical power. It presents three very distinct perspectives on international legal topics\, that were developed during a three-month artist in residency programme at the T.M.C. Asser Instituut\, a research centre for international and European law based in The Hague\, International City of Peace and Justice. The residency\, inspired by the Asser Institute’s research agenda “Rethinking public interests in International and European Law” and celebrating the Asser Institute’s 60th anniversary\, aims to create greater understanding and engagement with international and European law through visual storytelling. \n\n\n\nIn her work ‘[RESTRICTED]’\, Daria Radu addresses the architecture of international legal institutions in The Hague\, demystifying these spaces by highlighting their human elements and questioning their accessibility to the public. Daria was granted access to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and documented the metaphorical cracks of the seemingly perfect buildings\, drawing attention to the mundane and unnoticed. While justice is destined for everyone\, international law is a construct covered in intricate layers of inaccessibility\, she concludes. \n\n\n\nAnastasia Troshkova similarly explores proximity and distance in her work ‘A Testimony of Birdwatching’\, where she investigates the role of consumer drones in modern warfare and international law. Her work delves into the visual function of small\, manoeuvrable ‘first-person view’ (FPV) drones – both as contemporary cameras and as tools for remote-controlled killing. While Anastasia previously used drones for photography\, video-making\, and entertainment\, she now focuses on footage widely shared on the internet – captured by drones shortly before their deadly attacks. Using a Polaroid camera\, she challenges the distance and the detached gaze that drones create between reality\, the operator\, and the spectator. The scenography is crafted by Boris Steiner. \n\n\n\nSalome Erni works with the visual traces of Case No. ARB/24/44\, an international arbitration between a gas company and the Netherlands which was filed in October 2024. The work not only speaks about the gas exploitation controversy in Groningen\, but also about the designed inaccessibility of investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) arbitrations and a world where states are often complicit with companies when the revenues are high enough\, until the people pressure them to reconsider. By borrowing the language of activism\, Salome tackles the abstract postcolonial frameworks of international dispute settlement and asks the audience: Where is the public interest?  \n\n\n\nSAVE THE DATE – On Thursday 13 March\, West Den Haag\, located in the former American Embassy\, will host a closing event with the artists and speakers from the Asser Institute and the KABK to talk about their perspectives on art and international law. More information will follow soon. \n\n\n\nAbout Cultuurhaven and West Den HaagCultuurhaven is a new platform aimed at fostering connections between city residents and the established cultural field. Through collaboration and exchange across various cultural levels\, the project promotes a more inclusive\, accessible\, and dynamic arts sector in The Hague’s Museumkwartier. Cultuurhaven is organised by West Den Haag\, located in the former US embassy.  \n\n\n\nDo you have ideas or want to learn more?
