SUMMARY:From Digital Promise to Frontline Practice: New and Emerging Technologies in Humanitarian Action
DESCRIPTION:In its report on new and emerging technologies in humanitarian action\, OCHA reviews how technologies ranging from artificial intelligence to unmanned aerial vehicles\, biometrics and the internet of things can enable earlier\, faster and potentially more effective humanitarian action. It also examines the complex challenges and risks these technologies present in humanitarian settings\, from adequate data\, data protection and privacy to digital inequality\, sustainable investments and conflicts of interest in public-private-partnerships. \n\n\n\nThe report identifies several enablers and guardrails\, including local front-line leadership and equitable access to technology; bottom-up approaches that put people at the centre; a digitally literate cadre of humanitarians and adequate\, representative data; ambitious and sustainable coalitions across sectors; governance that keeps pace with technology; and investments that mirror ambition. \n\n\n\nDuring this event\, co-hosted by the Kingdom of the Netherlands and OCHA\, speakers will discuss the promises and pitfalls of new technologies\, and how to realize the ‘digital promise’ for the humanitarian sector. \n\n\n\nFeatured speakers include:\n\n\n\nMark Lowcock\, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator\, United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian AffairsBirgitta Tazelaar\, Deputy Director-General for International Cooperation\, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the NetherlandsMaria Francesca Spatolisano\, Assistant Secretary-General for Policy Coordination and Inter-Agency Affairs and Officer in Charge of the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on TechnologyJohn Frank\, Vice President for UN Affairs\, MicrosoftCindy Issac\, Deputy Head of Office\, Somalia\, United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Open House: Parliamentarians for Global Action
DESCRIPTION:Take a deep dive into the Peace and Justice community of the Hague! \n\n\n\nThe Hague is the international city of Peace and Justice. The Humanity Hub is at the heart of this unique ecosystem\, providing a home for organizations striving for a more peaceful and just world and acting as a catalyst for collaboration. This diverse community of professionals is working every day towards innovating their sectors\, from humanitarian action and justice innovation to peacebuilding and education.  \n\n\n\nThis time around the spotlight is on Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA)\, a non-profit\, non-partisan international network of approximately 1\,100 legislators in over 130 elected parliaments around the globe\, which aims to promote peace\, democracy\, the rule of law\, human rights\, gender equality and population issues through the network of its parliamentary members.  \n\n\n\nJoin us virtually to learn more about how PGA seeks to sensitize\, build technical and legal capacity\, and strengthen the political will of parliamentarians to take concrete initiatives and legislative actions to achieve results on PGA’s campaign objectives through a peer-to-peer methodology\, country-by-country strategy\, and the convening of national and regional parliamentary workshops. \n\n\n\nAbout PGA\n\n\n\nPGA counts with three programmatic areas and ten campaigns:  \n\n\n\n(i) International Law and Human Rights Programme (a) Campaign for the Universality and Effectiveness of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) System; (b) Campaign for the Abolition of the Death Penalty; (c) Campaign for the Protection of the Oceans and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14) \n\n\n\n(ii) Gender\, Equality and Inclusion: (a) Campaign to End Child\, Early and Forced Marriage (CEFM); (b) Campaign against Discrimination based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) \n\n\n\n(iii) International Peace and Security: (a) Biological Security and Health Campaign; (b) Campaign to Address the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and to Promote the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT); (c) Campaign to Promote Nuclear and Radiological Security and (d) Campaign in Support of the Negotiation of a Treaty Prohibiting Fully Autonomous Weapons (FAWs) + the Core Campaign on Democratic Renewal and Human Rights. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCampaign for the Universality and Effectiveness of System of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).\n\n\n\nFrederika Schweighoferova will take the time to talk us through PGA’s Rome Statute campaign. Since September 1998\, PGA progressively launched a Campaign for the Universality and Effectiveness of System of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).  The Campaign intends to promote a universal culture of upholding the Rule of Law\, human rights and human dignity by fighting impunity for the commission of genocide\, war crimes\, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression\, the most serious crimes of concern to the international community as a whole. These efforts are in line with UN Sustainable Development Goal 16: “To promote just\, peaceful and inclusive societies”\, particularly Target 16.3 which refers to promoting the rule of law at the national and international levels and ensure equal access to justice for all.  To adapt the campaign’s efforts to the needs of specific countries\, group of countries or regions\, the PGA Secretariat works with members of parliament at national\, regional and international level  in approximately 40 target countries. \n\n\n\nWhat to expect \n\n\n\nThe Open House event will last about 45 minutes with an overview of the organization and a focus on specific projects. It will also give you ample opportunity to interact with the speakers and experts from the organization. The online Open House will be facilitated on Zoom.  \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Using the Sphere Standards in Urban Settings
DESCRIPTION:Applying humanitarian standards in urban settings has been a challenge for a long time. The recent blast in the harbor of Beirut is yet another example. The urban context has consequences for the disaster management: communities are fluid and complex\, with perhaps hidden groups (refugees\, IDPs)\, great socio-economic differences and probably a big amount of first responders\, self-organization and self-recovery. \n\n\n\nTrainer: Aninia Nadig\, Policy and Practice Manager of Sphere. \n\n\n\nStarting point for this training will be the recently updated guide ‘Using the Sphere Standards in Urban Settings’\, which can be found here. \n\n\n\nPrimary target groups for the training are  professionals working in needs assessment\, programme design and management of humanitarian response (head quarters and country offices). The training may also be useful for a wider range of staff\, including government officials and humanitarian personnel who find themselves confronted for the first time with a humanitarian crisis in urban areas. \n\n\n\nLearning goals of the training: \n\n\n\nAn introduction in the specific context of urban disaster repossessHow to apply the Sphere Standard in urban contextsPreparedness: how can you prepare as an INGO to meet CHS and Sphere standards in urban disaster responses.\n\n\n\nThis training is a pilot offered to the constituency of KUNO. \n\n\n\nPrior registration is required. SUMMARY:Transformative Methodologies workshop
DESCRIPTION:This online workshop will go beyond the simplistic view of research objectives alone bringing about social transformation\, and engage with the research process itself. \n\n\n\nOn transformative methodologies\n\n\n\nTransformative methodologies go beyond the simplistic view of research objectives alone bringing about social transformation\, and engage with the research process itself. Transformative methodologies are inherently reflexive and critical\, and sharply focused on the power relations in the research process. \n\n\n\nIt focuses on answering several critical questions\, including:  \n\n\n\nWho wants transformative changes?Who brings about these changes? What are the intersectional implications of these changes? \n\n\n\nWhy this workshop?\n\n\n\nWith a conversation on transformative methodologies we seek to address these problematic assumptions and practices.  \n\n\n\nA critical and forward-looking synthesis of existing transformative research methodologies can serve as a key step in the development of methodologies and practices towards a more systematic\, ISS-wide approach to research for social transformation. \n\n\n\nWorkshop details\n\n\n\nWe will gather on 11 May 2021 to synthesize and share our experiences and thoughts on transformative research methodologies. The key objective is to engage in a critical dialogue by discussing ways to further our application of transformative methodologies. \n\n\n\nFormat\n\n\n\n2 sessions (morning and afternoon) \n\n\n\nMorning session (10:00-12:00): Sharing and discovering how ISS researchers have applied transformative methodologies \n\n\n\nAfternoon session (14:00-16:00): Discussing ethical and other concerns\, and future applications \n\n\n\nGet involved\n\n\n\nWe want to learn from you and enable you to inspire others\, so we invite you to share your work or ideas. Think with us about creative ways to showcase your work or ideas in our virtual gallery\, e.g.\, in a short videoclip\, images\, art or recorded interviews. People from all over will be able to access and engage with your presentation. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Communication Coffee P2P: Shifting Perspectives - a Masterclass in storytelling for development
DESCRIPTION:Stories have the potential to be extremely effective. They have the power to alter how we perceive our surroundings\, interact with one another\, and persuade us. The viewer is able to shift perspectives and challenge their own way of thinking by identifying with the characters. Because of this ability to empathize with story characters\, story is one of the most powerful ways to change belief and behavior. When it comes to changing people’s minds about contentious political or social issues\, stories have been shown to be the most effective. This session will explore how you can tell better stories to reach your audience and shift them through emotion. \n\n\n\nThe Media Development Collective is devoted to the transformative power of stories. We recognize (digital) media’s potential as a new frontier for knowledge transfer and attitude shaping. We believe in the power of collectives; “people working together to effect change.” The Media Development Collective is a new\, collaborative consultancy and training organization focused on the media\, civil society\, and for-good sectors. We have years of hands-on experience in the media and international development sectors\, and we have worked in over 30 countries around the world. We provide media training\, coaching\, and assistance with the implementation of media campaigns and programs. Professionals and subject matter experts in our network\, as well as those who have taken part in our organizational trainings and collaborative programs\, are part of our “collective.” We work in the traditional media development space as well as the media for development space. We foster good journalism and assist those who fill journalism’s gaps in contexts where it is restricted. We create interactive trainings and work with partners to build behavior change campaigns. Our “media for” approach aims to mobilize civil society by training them in strategic communications – which help amplify their messages by using the right message\, in the right channel\, at the right time. \n\n\n\nSession Leads\n\n\n\nJanet H. Anderson works a journalist and podcaster on a wide range of human rights issues. She also trains NGOs and campaigners in engagement and persuasive storytelling for impact. For the past 5 years Janet has lead innovative Social Change Campaigning courses globally. Trained by the BBC\, she has worked for a wide range of media development NGOs\, broadcasters and content producers across Europe and Africa.  \n\n\n\nBrandon Oelofse is the founder of Media Development Collective\, a training\, and consultancy company focused on strategic communications for the civil society sector. He’s an award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker and his work has been represented at numerous festivals\, including the Cannes festival and the Oscar. With MDC he has been leading training on engagement from civil society to provide an alternative\, counter-narrative communication training which particular emphasis on digital (de)radicalization\, Islamic and far-right extremism in the Middle East and Eastern and Central Europe.  \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to participate\, please email programming@humanityhub.net. \n\n\n\nNote: This event is for Hub members only.

SUMMARY:SDG Theme Shaper Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Hague Humanity Hub has become an SDG House with the purpose to connect and support collaboration between diverse actors working on international impact for a more peaceful and just world. In moving towards our vision to facilitate connections and support a diverse ecosystem of organisations working on so many different facets of peace and justice\, some recurrent challenges are met. How can we align such diverse work into shared themes? How do we best position the Humanity Hub to help our community work on their goals\, while connecting to others throughout The Hague and beyond who share this vision and purpose? \n\n\n\nDue to its urgency\, the Humanity Hub’s first seasonal programming theme revolved around insights on COVID-19 responses\, with the next theme being the SDGs. Do you want to help us shape the way we involve with the SDGs within the Hub community? We want our programming to be led by our community – and tis is your chance as a member to aid in shaping the direction! \n\n\n\nMore info following soon… \n\n\n\nNote: This is a Hub members only event.

SUMMARY:The decolonization of aid #1: a conversation from a historical perspective
DESCRIPTION:The series \n\n\n\nWith the  #BLM debates\, and other anti-racism protests\, the discussion about the decolonization of aid got an impulse. Blogs\, panel discussions (sometimes very heated) and Tweets stumbled over one another. We witnessed many statements and opinions\, but perhaps not so much common ground to proceed from. \n\n\n\nKUNO\, Partos\, and The Institute of Social Studies (ISS) we take one step back and approach the discussion in a series of talks. Step by step\, we highlight an aspect of this debate. We ask two experts to engage in a conversation with one another to explore the controversies and perhaps find some common grounds. \n\n\n\nRegister for the 1st conversation on May 12\n\n\n\nPrior registration to the session is required: for the first session ‘a conversation from a historical perspective’ onWednesday 12 May 16:00 – 17:30 CET you can register here. \n\n\n\nIn the series of dialogies we address the following perspectives: \n\n\n\nThe conversations will be ZOOM-webinars. Participants to the webinar can participate via the chat and Q&A box. SUMMARY:Deadly voyages: Migrant journey across the globe
DESCRIPTION:New publication edited by Veronica Fynn Bruey and Steven Bender exploring the burdens and impact of perilous migration. \n\n\n\nDuring this Development Research Seminar\, Veronica Fynn Bruey will launch her new book. The contributions consider which laws\, policies\, practices and venues might establish empathy and protection for migrants. \n\n\n\nDr Veronica Fynn BrueyBiographyVeronica Fynn Bruey is the Director of Flowers School of Global Health Science and a research affiliate with the University of London’s Refugee Law Initiative. This interdisciplinary volume envisions and calls for a transformation in migration policy\, motivated by the common goal of drastically reducing the peril migrants face when compelled to make their treacherous journeys.  \n\n\n\nInform\, educate\, persuade\, and facilitate newer or less-heard perspectives on migration \n\n\n\nAll contributors to this volume agree on the inadequacy of current approaches and the dire need for change in global migration law and policy. Therefore\, the book seeks to inform\, educate\, persuade\, and facilitate newer or less-heard perspectives\, toward wider participation and influence within the forced migration policy debate.  \n\n\n\nGuided by the famous advice of Karl Marx that the point should be changing the world rather than merely analyzing or interpreting it\, the contributors suggest practical measures to fix the current gap in responses to migrant peril\, along with strategies for diagnosing\, countering\, and promoting human dignity and social justice\, with the aim of preventing future deaths and injuries in migrant journeys across the globe.  \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Predicting Conflict: The Water\, Peace & Security Partnership Early Warning Tool
DESCRIPTION:The average level of peacefulness deteriorated for the ninth time in twelve years This link opens in a new tab. The nature of conflict is transforming across the world. Yet the information space is changing so quickly that it threatens to leave many early warning/early action (EWEA) efforts behind. Availability of big data\, including easy access to what people say and do online\, combined with advanced computational capacity\, opens a potential for the EWEA community to use the momentum and advance their field further. We believe that an important step in achieving this goal is exchanging the lessons and latest efforts transparently between actors and regions. With this goal\, we are facilitating this workshop as an open space for this exchange to happen. Join us! \n\n\n\nObjectives \n\n\n\nThe overall objective is to facilitate peer-to-peer exchange on best practices in EWEA. The event will bring together at the international level (for the first time) national and international actors working on early warning/early action to share lessons learned on effective models\, practices\, and methods to influence decision making and enable conflict prevention on the ground. It will also help to establish networks and create opportunities for capacity building with data visualization tools. Substantively\, the conference will shed the light on advanced techniques with the greatest potential to revolutionize the field. \n\n\n\nFormat \n\n\n\nThis conference will create an online space across different time zones and gather voices around the world to discuss the latest developments in EWEA. It will offer hands-on experience in working with advanced data-driven methodologies and improve capacity to implement data-driven action for preventive\, early action for peace and security of key civil society organizations\, multilateral organizations\, and governments. More specifically\, the event will provide a combination of expert panel discussions\, workshops\, online pitches\, and one-on-one conversations with data scientists to help you discover “the art of possible of data science“. \n\n\n\nParticipation at the workshop is free of charge. \n\n\n\n\nJOIN THE CONFERENCE

SUMMARY:Fragile States Index 2021 Launch
DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\n\nPerhaps the clearest lesson of 2020 was that fragilities can affect any country in the world. What started as a health crisis quickly cascaded across all the FSI indicators with overlapping and compounding challenges such as recessions\, protests\, and in some cases\, violence. However\, this year also presents a unique opportunity to explore what resilience looks like in different contexts\, and the role played by the development community\, civil society\, the private sector\, and government institutions to manage shocks and pressures. \n\n\n\nThe Fund for Peace\, in partnership with the peacebuilding INGO International Alert This link opens in a new tab\, will be holding a global virtual event on Thursday\, May 20\, that will bring together leading experts to discuss how societies can emerge from the COVID-19 crisis stronger and more resilient. SUMMARY:Countering Hate Speech Online Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the past year\, communicating online has been more popular (and necessary) than ever before. While there are clearly many benefits to online communication\, online hate speech poses an increasing threat. Hate speech can take on many different forms and is often not easily detected\, and rarely efficiently countered. Most commonly\, hateful comments and posts are reported\, which can solve the problem in the short term but not sustainably.  \n\n\n\nThis year’s World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development\, we want to contribute to raising awareness about the importance of safe online environments and the threat that hate speech poses to dialogue and development.  \n\n\n\nIn collaboration with our partners Youth for Peace (BiH) and the ALTer Hate Campaign (BiH) we are organising an interactive workshop on May 21. Aiming to raise awareness about online hate speech\, it will also equip participants with practical tools to counter online hate speech and help to create more peaceful and safe online environments. \n\n\n\nRegister for the free workshop below to receive the Zoom link. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:The Hague Conversations on Conflict - Yemen: Once again at a crossroads
DESCRIPTION:Started in 2019 by LINKS Europe and The Hague Humanity Hub\, The Hague Conversations on Conflict aim to rethink approaches to conflict prevention and resolution and to provide a forum where the changing nature of conflict can be analysed and assessed\, together with the responses of international society. \n\n\n\nA new situation is emerging in Yemen\, both on the military and the political fronts\, with several ongoing efforts to revive and support the UN peace process\, including efforts by the US Special Envoy for Yemen\, Timothy Lenderking\, and the European Union.   \n\n\n\nThe recent military campaign in Marib suggests that no talks will be held before there are gains on the ground. This undoubtedly poses serious concerns for the humanitarian situation amidst poor donor pledges in both 2020 and 2021. This reality cannot be ignored as it could shape the peace process going forwards and is capable of redefining Yemen’s relationship with its neighbours.  \n\n\n\nLooking at the conflict from a regional perspective\, it is now clear that neither Iran’s nor Saudi Arabia’s roles can be ignored or be disregarded in the peace process. In addition\, other actors have pitched in\, with some\, such as the UAE\, playing rather ambiguous roles. Conversely\, Oman has been active since the beginning to foster dialogue between the different Yemeni groups and is open to mediate between all Yemeni actors.    \n\n\n\nWith Yemen at a crossroads on various fronts\, this event will look into the current political\, security\, regional and humanitarian prospects for the future.  \n\n\n\nAfter the panel discussion and Q&A\, participants will be given the chance to discuss the topic and network in online break-out rooms during which some of the issues discussed can be further unpacked. Grab this chance to meet new people and keep the conversation going! \n\n\n\nSpeakers:\n\n\n\nH.E. Ms Sahar Ghanem – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Yemen to the Kingdom of the Netherlands\, and a Non-resident Ambassador to Sweden and Norway; Permanent Representative of the Republic of Yemen to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical WeaponsAmbassador Peter Semneby – Sweden’s Special Envoy for YemenAhmed Nagi – Nonresident Scholar at the Malcolm H. SUMMARY:UNHCR Webinar: “Op de vlucht tijdens corona”
\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER
