SUMMARY:peace&justice café: Towards Climate Equity
DESCRIPTION:“Climate Change is happening now\, and to all of us. No country or community is immune. And\, as is always the case\, the poor and vulnerable are the first to suffer and the worst hit.” – UN Secretary-General António Guterres \n\n\n\nThe climate crisis is already having huge effects within our world: from governmental changes to business shifts\, protests; conflicts\, and much more. During discussions about the need for immediate action\, it’s often said that humans are driving the climate towards a series of ‘tipping points’; irreversible and critical points of no return. \n\n\n\nIn the next edition of the peace&justice café\, The Hague community will explore the various ways that climate change is affecting lives across the globe\, and at the intersections of rapidly developing challenges – and what needs to be done to keep the crisis from escalating beyond these ‘tipping points’. For more information about our roundtables and speakers you can check the Humanity Hub Social Media accounts and soon our website. \n\n\n\nIf you would like to participate as a roundabout host\, or have a suggestion for a great organisation or keynote speaker you would like to see at this café\, please email us at programming@humanityhub.net. \n\n\n\nThe event starts at 16:00\, doors will be open at 15:30 \n\n\n\n\nSign up here!

SUMMARY:T.M.C Asser Annual Lecture: 'The Right to Food\, Violence\, and Food Systems' by Michael Fakhri
DESCRIPTION:“One of the main causes of hunger and famine is violence and armed conflict. In turn\, armed conflict leads to more food insecurity. How then to get out of this vicious cycle?” says Michael Fakhri\, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food and an internationally recognised expert on food systems and human rights. On April 20\, 2023\, Professor Fakhri will deliver the 8th Annual T.M.C. Asser Lecture in the Peace Palace in the Hague. The title of his lecture is: ‘The right to food\, violence\, and food systems’. To allow for a better understanding of how food systems operate and to reframe how the right to food is addressed in international law\, Michael Fakhri will examine forms of violence in food systems in his lecture.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nMore information and sign-up

SUMMARY:Asser InstituteWorkshop: Critical Reflections on AI Ethics Principles and Societal Inputs for the Governance of Military AI
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, ‘AI ethics principles’ have emerged as an instrument for the governance of military applications of artificial intelligence (AI). These documents can be developed by groups of experts and policy makers\, or through experimentation or consultation with the general public or relevant stakeholders. Each initiative proposes a list of ‘principles’\, values\, guidelines or descriptions of best practices that can be action guiding and promote responsible design\, development and use of military AI. While these initiatives provide frameworks against which decisions and practices of individuals\, institutions and states can be assessed\, their normative role is unclear\, and they remain legally non-binding.   \n\n\n\nWhat is the place and utility of AI ethics principles in juxtaposition to existing legal and other normative frameworks? What roles can or should the general public or relevant stakeholders play in the creation of these lists of principles? What are the social and cultural implications of creating ‘lists’ to promote responsible behaviour? And what conceptual and practical issues should be considered in the development of AI principles?

SUMMARY:Jobtech Alliance Webinar: Introducing the New Jobtech Quality of Work Measurement Tool
DESCRIPTION:The rise of digital labour platforms has significant potential to create new work opportunities for youth\, but it also comes with risks. Questions remain about what a ‘good’ job really means in the jobtech space. To-date\, measurement has focused mainly on the practices and policies of the platforms themselves. While important\, the reality is that people are engaged across multiple platforms\, and the outcomes they experience depend on their personal circumstances\, and labour market needs. So what are the most important criteria for understanding users’ dignity\, pay and satisfaction across the digitally-enabled work they do? Building on a collaboration called the Jobtech Learning Lab\, the International Labour Organization’s Systems Change Initiative\, the Challenge Fund for Youth Employment (CFYE)\, and the Jobtech Alliance have developed and piloted a tool for assessing job quality outcomes associated with jobtech platforms in Africa from the perspective of users. This webinar will present the tool and the initial findings from piloting with three platforms. \n\n\n\nSign up here or via the button below! \n\n\n\n\nMore information and Signup

SUMMARY:Diversifying Non-Profit Funding: Lessons from Impact Investing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Humanity Hub Members’ knowledge sharing session on “Diversifying non-profit funding: lessons from impact investing” on 2 May\, from 16:30-18:00 at The Hague Humanity Hub. SUMMARY:Hague Talks: Achieving The SDGs: Mission Impossible or Yes We Can?
DESCRIPTION:We are at the halfway point of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals This link opens in a new tab (SDGs) set in 2015 by all 193 members of the United Nations. Will we reach them by 2030\, or will we fail to organize ourselves to generate the impact required? In a context full of mutually reinforcing crises (conflicts\, pandemic\, climate change…)\, are the SDGs a mission impossible? Or are there sparks of hope that mean we can still achieve these Global Goals? And if so\, what is required from each and all of us? What power and ideas do young people have for the future? And what motivates our speakers to pursue a career in global development\, despite the huge challenges? \n\n\n\nThis event is part of a visit Achim Steiner (UNDP Administrator) to The Hague. He will speak with young people\, civil society\, parliament and government to discuss how the Netherlands and UNDP can together generate lasting impact for a more just and sustainable world. \n\n\n\nAchim Steiner and Kitty van der Heijden (Director-General\, Dutch MFA) will also share their personal drives and share what they believe are the challenges and reasons for optimism. They will challenge the audience to think about what role each of us can play\, regardless of age or background. Of course\, they also look forward to being challenged by you! \n\n\n\nEvent is co-organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs This link opens in a new tab\, the United Nations Development Programme This link opens in a new tab (UNDP) and Leiden University – Campus The Hague This link opens in a new tab\, the Auditorium. DESCRIPTION:On 11 May\, this multidisciplinary event on reparations will bring together practitioners\, scholars\, and students\, in the year that marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Rome Statute (1998)\, which led to the creation of the International Criminal Court and the Trust Fund for Victims. \n\n\n\nParticipants will be invited to reflect about how reparations have changed in the course of the twentieth and twenty-first century\, and how they will continue to be shaped by diplomatic\, legal and academic consideration\, State and individual responsibility\, and victim agency.  \n\n\n\nReparations\n\n\n\nToday\, we almost take it as a given that survivors of severe forms of violence deserve some kind of reparation. The imperative to repair is an important principle in international law – one sanctioned by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 60/147 calling for “adequate\, effective and prompt reparation” in the wake of mass atrocities. \n\n\n\nBut the understanding that victims of mass human rights abuses deserve some form of reparation is a relatively recent one. And it underwent crucial shifts in the course of the twentieth century. But how do reparation programmes come to be? How can one assess their reparative value? To what extent can a historical perspective be of help when trying to gauge the present and future viability of reparative justice? \n\n\n\nRoundtable and debate\n\n\n\nDistinguished professor Beatrice de Graaf (History and Global Governance) will chair a roundtable discussion with: Lorena De Vita (History of International Relations)\, Thijs Bouwknegt (NIOD\, Institute for War\, Holocaust and Genocide Studies)\, Julie Fraser (Netherlands Institute of Human Rights)\, Fabián Salvioli (UN Special Rapporteur on Truth\, Justice and Reparation)\, and Henk-Cor van der Kwast (Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the International Criminal Court). \n\n\n\nPieter de Baan from the International Criminal Court’s Trust Fund for Victims will lead a public debate and provide closing remarks\, followed by a short reception. \n\n\n\nThe event will be hosted at Aula\, University Hall\, Utrecht. \n\n\n\nThe event is co-organised by the Trust Fund for Victims/International Criminal Court and Lorena De Vita’s Alfred Landecker Foundation research project Holocaust Diplomacy: the Global Politics of Memory and Forgetting. \n\n\n\n\nMore Information and Sign Up Here

SUMMARY:Discussion: Holocaust Diplomacy\, Policy Makers as Memory Makers?
DESCRIPTION:How do global institutions preserve or shape the memory of the past – and especially in the case of Holocaust memory? What is the impact of policy and decision makers on Holocaust memorialisation at the local\, national\, and international level? And to what extent is the legacy of the Holocaust present in the workings of key institutions of global governance? On 12 May\, Lorena De Vita organises the multidisciplinary discussion ‘Holocaust Diplomacy: Policy Makers as Memory Makers?’. \n\n\n\nAssistant Professor Lorena De Vita (History of International Relations) will lead a discussion between policymakers and students on the intersection of diplomacy\, history\, and the politics of memory. \n\n\n\nHolocaust diplomacy\n\n\n\nThe expert panel including Ernst Steigenga (Head of the Dutch Delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance)\, Julia Sarbo (Programme Manager of Education Programmes at the National Holocaust Museum and Deputy Head of the Dutch Delegation to the IHRA)\, and Petra van den Boomgard (assistant professor in Transitional Justice at University College Utrecht) joins in a Q&A with interested students and academics. \n\n\n\nThis event forms part of Lorena De Vita’s research project\, Holocaust Diplomacy: The Politics of Memory and Forgetting\, funded by the Alfred Landecker Foundation (Alfred Landecker Lecturer Programme)\, combines historical research with teaching and outreach activities to build on an applied history lens and tackle some of these questions. \n\n\n\n\nMore Information and Sign up Here

SUMMARY:Report Launch: Breaking the gender trap: Challenging patriarchal norms to build peace by International Alert
DESCRIPTION:In societies across the world\, power is held by men\, through cultural norms and customs that favour men and withhold opportunity from women. \n\n\n\nSuch patriarchal norms create narrow and limiting definitions of what it means to be a man or a woman\, which leads to gender inequality and disrupts social harmony. These norms often prioritise men’s perspectives and experiences\, denying women a voice and their human rights. As culturally ingrained aspects of society\, both women and men reinforce and suffer from the impacts of these rigid roles and behaviours. \n\n\n\nThe impact of these social constructs is far-reaching: they can be triggers for conflict within and between societies and worsen hopes for achieving sustainable peace. International Alert’s latest research in Kyrgyzstan\, Nepal\, Nigeria and the Philippines has found that patriarchal norms perpetually compromise peacebuilding efforts. \n\n\n\nTo address this challenge\, International Alert Europe is hosting a discussion on how to overcome patriarchal norms in peacebuilding. The conversation will focus on sharing effective strategies to challenge patriarchal norms within peacebuilding programming and ensure women are included in efforts to build peace. \n\n\n\nWe’ll hear from the author of the report on the themes emerging from the research in all four contexts and some of the ways Alert’s teams and partners approach gender norms and patriarchal power structures. For example\, how International Alert in Kyrgyzstan developed a Kyrgyz language gender lexicon to transform the way local communities talk about gender and empower women. We’ll also hear how the Netherlands addresses gender and patriarchal norms in its approach to supporting women\, peace\, and security. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\nKirsten Meersschaert\, Executive Director\, International Alert Europe (Moderator)\n\n\n\nFrank Groome\, Deputy Head of Mission\, Irish Embassy in the Hague (Welcoming remarks)\n\n\n\nPascalle Grotenhuis\, Ambassador for Gender Equality & Women’s Rights\, Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs\n\n\n\nShakirat Toktosunova\, Central Asia Director\, International Alert\n\n\n\nSwechchcha Dahal\, former Gender and Peacebuilding Adviser\, International Alert\n\n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us for this fruitful exchange on how we can collaborate to build more inclusive and sustainable peace. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will be 16:00 – 17:30 followed by a reception with food and drink. \n\n\n\nSign-up available here!

SUMMARY:Zionism: An Emotional State
DESCRIPTION:Leiden University Lecture by Dr. Derek J. Penslar \n\n\n\nEmotion lies at the heart of all national movements\, and Zionism is no exception. For those who identify as Zionist\, the word connotes liberation and redemption\, uniqueness and vulnerability. Yet for many\, Zionism is a source of distaste if not disgust\, and those who reject it are no less passionate than those who embrace it. The power of such emotions helps explain why a word originally associated with territorial aspiration has survived so many years after the establishment of the Israeli state. Zionism: An Emotional State expertly demonstrates how the energy propelling the Zionist project originates from bundles of feeling whose elements have varied in volume\, intensity\, and durability across space and time. Beginning with an original typology of Zionism and a new take on its relationship to colonialism\, Penslar then examines the emotions that have shaped Zionist sensibilities and practices over the course of the movement’s history. The resulting portrait of Zionism reconfigures how we understand Jewish identity amidst continuing debates on the role of nationalism in the modern world. \n\n\n\nDerek J. Penslar is the William Lee Frost Professor of Jewish History at Harvard University in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. He is the author of several books\, including Theodor Herzl: The Charismatic Leader and Jews and the Military: A History. \n\n\n\n\nMore Information Here

SUMMARY:ISS Humanitarian Governance Seminar: Political and Humanitarian Crisis in Myanmar
DESCRIPTION:In this Humanitarian Governance hybrid seminar\, Dr Gerard McCarthy presents his book examining how ideals and practices of non-state welfare can sustain democratic resistance and undermine social reform. \n\n\n\nThis panel discussion marks the publication of Gerard McCarthy’s Outsourcing the Polity: Non-State Welfare\, Inequality and Resistance in Myanmar.  \n\n\n\nInformed by research during Myanmar’s decade of partial civilian rule (2011–2021)\, the book examines how ideals and practices of non-state welfare can both sustain democratic resistance and undermine social reform over time. With non-state social actors more important than ever following Myanmar’s return to dictatorship in 2021\, Outsourcing the Polity casts new light on the lasting legacies of outsourcing for distributive politics and poses questions about humanitarian engagement in Myanmar in the years to come.During this hybrid event\, McCarthy will offer a short overview of the book and then scholarly and practitioner discussants will offer comments and perspective. The talk will conclude with a Q&A. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nGerard McCarthy – Assistant Professor of Social Policy and Development at ISSMaaike MatelskiOpens external – Assistant Professor of Social and Cultural Anthropology at Vrije University AmsterdamAndrew Fischer – Professor of Inequality\, Social Protection and Development at ISSKhin OhmarOpens external – Founder and chairwoman of the Advisory Board of Progressive Voice \n\n\n\n\nPlease Register

SUMMARY:LeidenAsiaCentre: Seeking Western Men: Email-Order Brides Under China's Global Rise
DESCRIPTION:On 25 May 2023\, the LeidenAsiaCentre has invited Monica Liu\, author of the book Seeking Western Men: Email-Order Brides under China’s Global Rise\, published by Stanford University Press to give a lecture. This lecture will take place in The Hague Humanity Hub from 16:00 – 18:00\, followed by a reception. \n\n\n\nThe talk will summarise the research Monica Liu conducted from 2008 to 2019 in China where she explored the life histories and decision-making processes of Chinese women seeking to marry Western men whom they met through online dating agencies. The majority of these women were middle-aged (above 40)\, divorced\, and from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Monica’s investigation asked a number of questions: How did the inequalities that emerged during China’s transition from state socialism toward a global market economy shape these women’s desires to pursue out-migration via marriage? How did the women’s social and economic status in China affect their expectations about their new lives abroad? Join the discussion and sign up now! \n\n\n\n\nSign Up Here
