SUMMARY:ICCT to Host - Victims of terrorism and their right to access justice: Challenges and solutions
DESCRIPTION:International Centre for Counter-Terrorism is hosting a panel discussion on victims of terrorism and their right to access justice. \n\n\n\nVictims’ right to access to justice is a fundamental human right and a principle of the rule of law. To exercise this right\, States have the obligation to provide adequate avenues for victims to access the judicial system and have their cases heard before a competent jurisdiction. How can these obstacles be resolved? How can the experiences\, perspectives and priorities of victims be (best) considered during the investigation and trial process? And what are the victims’ experiences with the judicial system? These are some of the questions to answer in order to facilitate victims’ fight to access justice. The following panellists will discuss these and other questions: Niki Siampakou This link opens in a new tab\, Jeanne Sulzer This link opens in a new tab\, Hope Rikkelman This link opens in a new tab\, Catherine Marchi-Uhel This link opens in a new tab \n\n\n\n\nMore Info Here! SUMMARY:#DemocracyDrinks – Disrupting democracies
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 26 September for our monthly #DemocracyDrinks.   \n\n\n\nFor this next edition of the #DemocracyDrinks we want to reflect on some of the geopolitical dimensions between Russia and the EU. In the previous edition we focused on what we can do to protect our civic space and strengthen our democracies. Now we are zooming out and looking at the tensions on democracies by foreign states.   \n\n\n\nOur guest speaker will be Amy Eaglestone\, PhD researcher at the University of Birmingham who will speak about her research which focuses on the role of political parties in democracy reform in the Eastern European Neighborhood. This year she has also been working with the KPSRL on a project about responses to polarization in the region. She will also discuss the geopolitical relationship between the EU and Russia.  \n\n\n\nJoin the discussion on September 26th at the Hague Humanity Hub.   \n\n\n\nWhat are #DemocracyDrinks?  \n\n\n\nOur #DemocracyDrinks bring together democracy advocates\, thinkers and enthusiasts to connect in an informal setting.  \n\n\n\nAs a valuable opportunity for networking\, the event will be all about making new contacts and catching up with people you know. You can test new ideas; plan common initiatives; and find moral support and inspiration.  \n\n\n\n#DemocracyDrinks were launched by Defend Democracy This link opens in a new tab in Brussels in 2018. And\, since then\, the idea has taken off. #DemocracyDrinks have taken place around the world\, including in Washington DC\, Berlin\, Kathmandu and\, since last year\, The Hague.  \n\n\n\nOur previous #DemocracyDrinks in The Hague have attracted a lively mixture of people from NGOs\, international institutions\, think tanks and national government\, among others.  \n\n\n\nThe event series in The Hague is a collaboration between the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy This link opens in a new tab (NIMD)\, the Netherlands Helsinki Committee  This link opens in a new tab(NHC) and The Hague Humanity Hub This link opens in a new tab.   \n\n\n\n\nSign up here!

SUMMARY:WO=MEN Dutch Gender Platform - Gender MPI: Werk Maken van Politieke Participatie (Dutch Event)
DESCRIPTION:Verandering begint met actie. Want woensdag 22 november komt snel dichterbij.  \n\n\n\nHet evenement wordt geco-host door Tweede Kamerleden Songül Mutluer This link opens in a new tab (PvdA) en Derk Boswijk This link opens in a new tab (CDA)\, met de moderatie in handen van Laila Ait Baali\, directeur WO=MEN Dutch Gender Platform. \n\n\n\n\nMeer Informatie Hier!

SUMMARY:Leiden University - GTGC Lunch Seminar: Human Rights for Governing Digital Platforms
DESCRIPTION:Our member\, Leiden University’s research program Global Transformations and Governance Challenges are hosting a research presentation. On Monday 9 October 2023 from 12:00-13:00 in room 4.78\, Jelena Belic This link opens in a new tab\, Matthew Canfield This link opens in a new tab\, Rachel Griffin This link opens in a new tab\, Henning Lahmann This link opens in a new tab\, and Barrie Sander This link opens in a new tab will present their research on ‘The Promise and Perils of Human Rights for Governing Digital Platforms’.  \n\n\n\nRecent decades have witnessed the emergence of digital platforms as the “core organisational form” of informational capitalism. While platformisation is facilitating greater interconnection between actors around the world\, many perceive it as threatening core social and democratic values.  In response\, policymakers\, civil society organisations\, and academics have begun to frame platform governance through the framework of human rights. Yet while it offers a salient language of social justice\, it is unclear whether it is legally and conceptually adequate to address the issue. \n\n\n\n\nMore Info Here! This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Partos - Book Tour Dirk Jan Koch: Foreign Aid and its Unintended Consequences
DESCRIPTION:Dirk-Jan’s online book tour invites everyone interested in the side effects of foreign aid. Especially organisations interested in exploring unforeseen consequences\, willing to take them into account and wanting to share their knowledge with others are more than welcome to join. \n\n\n\nBook Overview\n\n\n\nDirk-Jan Koch will give an online book tour on his new book ´Foreign Aid and its Unintended Consequences´ at Partos. In this book\, he brings together his teams’ research and his personal experiences with the side effects of foreign aid. Foreign aid (be it humanitarian\, peacebuilding or development support) frequently brings with it a range of unintended consequences\, both negative and positive. This book delves into these consequences\, providing a fresh and comprehensive guide to understanding and addressing them. Dirk-Jan encourages organisations to pay more attention to unforeseen side effects of projects and critical reflection and to focus less on reaching targets and donor-driven goals. Next\, he emphasises the importance of working more with local people when measuring the effects of a project\, instead of organisations only using their own people and methods.   \n\n\n\nWhat to expect?\n\n\n\n\nOpening by Liana Hoornweg\, Director of Partos.\n\n\n\nDuring this session\, you can engage with Dirk-Jan on your experiences with the side effects of international development efforts.\n\n\n\nIrene Sleven\, co-director of VSO NL\, will moderate the session and share her reflections\n\n\n\n\nAbout Dirk-Jan Koch\n\n\n\nDirk-Jan is active as a diplomat\, writer and social scientist and works as the Chief Science Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and is a Professor of International Trade and Development Cooperation at Radboud University.  \n\n\n\nHe has combined practice in diplomacy and development (in\, amongst others\, Nigeria and the DR Congo) with an academic career for the last two decades. He aims to strengthen both policy and academia by creating cross-fertilisation between these two realms\, which are – in his view – too often operating in isolation.   \n\n\n\n\nSign Up Here! SUMMARY:Lab of Labs: integration\, representation and social exclusion in the Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview\n\n\n\nPiero Gandini This link opens in a new tab and The Hague Humanity Hub This link opens in a new tab present a Lab of Labs. A pilot series of facilitated conversations seeking to challenge and promote reflections on complex social topics.  \n\n\n\nOur first laboratory will focus on opening conversations and\, most probably\, actionable steps forward around sensitive topics such as integration\, representation\, and exclusion in the Netherlands. Socially there are also challenges as the host communities are not always welcoming them and there are few spaces and initiatives targeting to bridge the gap.  We believe that a social laboratory can become a true tool for radical social transformation. A personal and collective laboratory at the same time. A place from which to launch a truly emancipating life process.  \n\n\n\nIn the coming sessions\, the Lab will explore the challenges\, barriers and needs of front-line NGOs and civil society organizations (CSOs) as well as private sector actors involved in the response. Stay tuned for the reviews and summary of the 1st session\, if you’d like to be involved in the next ones.  Join us for an evening of fruitful discussions!  \n\n\n\nDesired Outcomes\n\n\n\n\n>Facilitated networking among Hub members and broader Hague peace and justice community; \n\n\n\n>Catalyst to open discussions on social problems in the Netherlands (and beyond) \n\n\n\n>Promote reflections and challenge ongoing understanding of integration\, representation and exclusion in the Netherlands for newcomers. \n\n\n\n\nThis series format grants flexibility in the design\, allowing the facilitators and the participants to go beyond these desired outputs.  \n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n\n\nYolanda Jansen This link opens in a new tab  \n\n\n\nShe is a Conversationalist and Restorative Justice facilitator with 25 years of experience in international nonprofits\, guided by her passion for fairness\, impact\, and joyful collaboration.  \n\n\n\n\n\nYiğit Aksakoğlu This link opens in a new tab   \n\n\n\nHe is an impact curator recognized for his pioneering work in advancing social development\, particularly in the domains of human rights advocacy and the scaling up of social services. \n\n\n\n\n\nPiero Gandini This link opens in a new tab  \n\n\n\nHe is a Motivator of Change. SUMMARY:Driving Systemic Change: Redefining Loss and Damage
DESCRIPTION:Humanity Hub’s member Mercy Corps is hosting a session at the upcoming ImpactFest\, on November 7. \n\n\n\nThe session\, hosted by Mercy Corps\, the Broker\, and the Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance\, in collaboration with Save the Children\, will look at approaching climate justice with a proactive lens. \n\n\n\nClimate change impacts have become an everyday reality\, which has made ‘Loss and Damage’ increasingly prominent\, especially as it showcases systemic failures at many levels. Thus\, a proactive approach is required to minimise and address ‘Loss and Damage\,’ centring around concrete entry points for action. Through the expert guidance of Barbara Rosen Jacobson\, and Nina Qaiem Maqami\, and through further collaboration with Save the Children\, we challenge all actors across the ecosystem to think about their position in the system\, and how to leverage this position into building climate resilience. \n\n\n\nSign up here to attend the session. \n\n\n\nFor more information about the ImpactFest\, please visit this page This link opens in a new tab.

SUMMARY:Movies That Matter On Tour: Total Trust
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\nOn Tour This link opens in a new tab is a spin-off of the Movies that Matter Festival. Each year\, they select eight great festival titles that they aim to offer a wide platform throughout the country. In cooperation with (currently) seventeen film theatres and local volunteer groups\, they screen a film or documentary that matters\, every month from October to May. The screenings are accompanied by in-depth programmes and guest speakers arranged by local groups. In this way\, dialogue and broadening perspectives in local contexts is encouraged. \n\n\n\nTotal Trust: Summary\n\n\n\nTotal Trust takes a visceral look at digital control in China where unprecedented levels of state surveillance prevail through trust\, fear\, obedience and resistance. It aims to explore the changes of social behaviors caused by an all-seeing society and finds its lasting power in the people who are fighting against the abuse of state power. \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, the Chinese government has felt its control threatened as activism and public outrage increase over a slowing economy and growing social issues. To counteract these events\, China has started extending a sophisticated digital system across the country. Aimed at tracking and monitoring citizens\, collecting\, analyzing their data and categorizing behaviors as either punishable or commendable\, this system hopes to predict political resistance within society before it happens. And since COVID the pandemic is abused to install a gapless digital control net. The citizens are monitored 24/7 as never imagined before. \n\n\n\nWe learn how this complex digital monitoring works through the people living under this surveillance – from ordinary people to people who have been particularly targeted by the government because of their critical thinking. Like lawyers and journalists. \n\n\n\nTrailer\n\n\n\nTrailer Available Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7CVl9IjIh8 \n\n\n\nCredits\n\n\n\nDIRECTOR – Jialing Zhang \n\n\n\nTYPE – Documentary \n\n\n\nCOUNTRY – China \n\n\n\nYEAR – 2023 \n\n\n\nDURATION – 97 minutes \n\n\n\nSPOKEN LANGUAGE – Chinese (Mandarin) \n\n\n\nSUBTITLES – EN / NL \n\n\n\n\nMore Info Here!

SUMMARY:KPSRL - Innovative Funding for Local Peacebuilding Action: Walking the Talk
DESCRIPTION:The 6th Unboxing Localisation session will dive deeper into the financial side of localization. Co-hosted by GPPAC\, it’ll explore innovative financing tools and approaches (beyond just grantmaking) that foster local leadership and local ownership of peacebuilding initiatives. \n\n\n\nBackground Information\n\n\n\nInternational donors\, including the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, are making efforts to promote fair\, equitable\, inclusive and non-extractive partnerships in the current aid system as part of the ongoing efforts to advance the ‘localisation’ agenda that recognises the importance of meaningful engagement of local stakeholders to achieve sustainable and impactful peace. Since 2021\, GPPAC has been contributing to these efforts by creating learning and exchange spaces for local peacebuilders\, the donor community\, and international finance experts to explore opportunities and challenges towards ensuring accessible and impactful funding for local peacebuilding action. In 2022\, with the support of the Dutch Knowledge Platform Security & Rule of Law\, GPPAC published a paper that presents concrete options to change the way donors and intermediaries distribute their financial support to peacebuilding with the aim of shifting power to local peacebuilders. \n\n\n\n\nSign Up Here!
