SUMMARY:ICCT Annual Conference 2024
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 May\, the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) organises the Annual Conference\, under the overarching theme: “Houston we have a problem”: Counter-Terrorism in the Age of Uncertainty. The Conference will take place at Beeld and Geluid in The Hague.  \n\n\n\nWithin the last years\, the world has witnessed increasingly diversifying patterns of extremism and terrorism. In order to develop durable counter-measures\, we ask which of these current trends and phenomena will stay or become even more relevant within the next electoral cycle. Painting scenarios of how these trends and phenomena will develop within the next few years can help to identify strategies to counter them while upholding the rule of law. By bringing together a mix of key CT and P/CVE practitioners\, policy-makers\, and international scholars\, we hope to explore these pressing developments in depth throughout the two-day conference. \n\n\n\nThe Introductory Remarks and the Plenary Sessions on Day 1 will be open to a public audience (both in-person and online) to encourage the conversation and address questions of public interest. The workshop sessions on day 2 are invitation only for a select group of researchers\, policy-makers\, and practitioners. They will take place behind closed doors\, under the Chatham House Rule. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLEARN MORE AND REGISTER This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Democracy Drinks EU Election Sprint: The Role of Youth
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 28 for our #DemocracyDrinks. \n\n\n\nThe coming editions will be special as we start our sprint to the EU elections. In the lead-up to\, around\, and after June 6 at #DemocracyDrinks the Hague\, we will focus on all things Elections. \n\n\n\nFor our first edition of the #DemocracyDrinks elections sprint on May 28\, we focus on the role of youth in the lead-up to the European Union Elections in June. \n\n\n\nYouth make up 16.3% of the European Union and are an important deciding factor in the future of the EU’s political landscape. Regardless of these statistics\, current decisions are the decisions of the future. \n\n\n\nDespite an increase of 14% in young people’s turnout in the 2019 EU elections\, turnout remains low. At the same time\, we can see that young people are very active in the informal political spheres\, dominating political activism and civic engagement\, such as demonstrations or online engagement. \n\n\n\nHow can we translate the desire to participate towards higher voter turnout during the EU elections? How can we develop approaches that address the duality in participation? \n\n\n\nParticipation\, however\, goes beyond voter turnout and beyond just the elections. How can we ensure that young people are heard and have a voice during the EU elections and later in the EU Parliament? \n\n\n\nTo try to make light of these questions\, we have invited speakers who will offer their perspectives\, namely: \n\n\n\n\nLotte Prins\, Board member of the Nationale Jeugdraad (NJR)\n\n\n\nRoos Habets\, Young Politician and current candidate for the EU Elections for Volt.\n\n\n\nFemke Brouwer\, Parliament expert at the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) and current candidate for the EU Elections for GroenLinks-PvdA will moderate the conversation.\n\n\n\n\nWe hope you will join us for what promises to be an unmissable discussion! \n\n\n\nWhat are the Democracy Drinks? \n\n\n\n#DemocracyDrinks brings together democracy advocates\, thinkers and enthusiasts at our monthly informal networking events. It is a great way of making new contacts and catching up with people you know; for testing ideas and planning actions; for moral support and inspiration. Feel free to invite friends and colleagues that work on or are interested in defending values like democracy\, rule of law\, human rights… Come along and you will be made welcome! \n\n\n\nThis event series is a collaboration between the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC) and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) and The Hague Humanity Hub. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLEARN MORE AND REGISTER

SUMMARY:Blue Drinks - Water\, Energy\, Food Nexus
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 30 for the next edition of Blue Drinks. \n\n\n\nBlue Drinks is an informal networking series for water and environmental professionals. For this edition we are highlighting the Water-Energy-Food Nexus. \n\n\n\nThe WEF Nexus provides a holistic and integrated approach in order to secure access to water\, energy and food in the long term. It strives to put water\, energy and agricultural needs\, which are competing for the same scarce resources\, on an equal footing. It aims to balance interests in resource use\, manage conflicts and identify synergies without compromising human wellbeing and healthy ecosystems. It stems from the realisation that water\, energy\, agriculture\, and natural ecosystems exhibit strong interlinkages\, and that under a traditional sectoral approach\, attempting to achieve resource security independently often endangers sustainability and security in one or more of the other sectors. \n\n\n\nThe speakers will be announced shortly. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a night of guaranteed great networking!

SUMMARY:Asser Institute: The right to health for women in armed conflict - addressing international law's role in the humanitarian crisis in Gaza
DESCRIPTION:“Women in Gaza resort to using scraps of tent in place of period products” reads an introduction by ActionAid\, an international organization providing on-the-ground humanitarian aid amidst the crisis in Gaza. According to a UN Report updated in February 2024\, around 700\,000 menstruating women and girls in Gaza have limited access to hygiene supplies. This scarcity\, compounded by a lack of water has increased infections to an unprecedented rate. Only a fraction of these essential requirements can be fulfilled by The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). This dire situation calls for immediate attention and action.  \n\n\n\nThis lecture will explore States’ existing obligations under international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law (IHRL) in relation to the right to health in conflict\, specifically focusing on how these regimes intersect in the context of the conflict in Gaza. Our speakers will address pressing issues such as the lack of menstrual hygiene products and lack of sanitation and proper aid contributing to disease\, miscarriages\, and trauma. The lecture will also explore ways to enforce the international laws pertaining to Palestinian women’s health needs in the on-going crisis. \n\n\n\nConfirmed speakers: \n\n\n\n\nDr Fleur van Leeuwen\, Assistant Prof\, Bogaziçi University\, Dept. SUMMARY:Pro Bono Connect: Navigating the Legal Field of Defamation: Risk\, Liability\, and SLAPPs
DESCRIPTION:The legal system seeks balance between freedom of expression and protections against illegal reputational damage. This coincides with increasing attention to “SLAPPs” (strategic lawsuits against public participation). \n\n\n\nWhat do Dutch and European law & policy say about this? How can NGO’s and journalists limit their risks when publishing critical articles\, reports\, accusations and claims? Do SLAPPs occur in the Netherlands and how can those affected best protect themselves? \n\n\n\nOn Monday\, 10 June\, Pro Bono Connect is organizing an NGO workshop. Together with experts from our pro bono partner firm Bird & Bird\, representatives of the Coalition Against SLAPPs in Europe (CASE) & Free Press Unlimited\, we’ll learn about the rules\, risks and consequences regarding critical expression in public and exchange experiences. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE (BEFORE JUNE 3)

SUMMARY:Fireside Peace Chat with Elizabeth Spehar\, UN Assistant Secretary General on Peacebuilding and Support
DESCRIPTION:Overview \n\n\n\nJoin us for the next edition in the Fireside Peace Chats series with Elizabeth Spehar\, Assistant Secretary-General (ASG) for Peacebuilding Support at the United Nations. This edition is titled “Navigating Conflict: The UN’s Role in Peacebuilding and Peacemaking\,” following Ms. Spehar’s professional journey\, we will explore the opportunities and challenges for the UN in contributing to peacebuilding in different contexts (e.g. Cyprus\, Latin America\, at HQ level). \n\n\n\nWhile geopolitical shifts and transnational challenge undermine the position of multilateral diplomacy; how can the UN be a viable peacemaker and peacebuilder? How did Ms. Spehar experience her engagement with situations of (post-)conflict while positioned in a large multilateral organization? \n\n\n\nMeet the speaker: Ms. Spehar. \n\n\n\nMs. Elizabeth Spehar has been the Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support since 2022. She has over 35 years of experience in international and political affairs\, having worked at United Nations Headquarters and in the field leading political\, development\, peacemaking\, peacebuilding and conflict prevention initiatives. Key roles have included serving as the Secretary-General’s Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP)\, also serving as Deputy to the Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus. Previously\, Ms. Spehar was Director of the Policy and Mediation Division in the former Department of Political Affairs (DPA) and Director for the Americas and Europe Division. Before joining the United Nations\, Ms. Spehar was a senior official with the Organization of American States (OAS) for more than 12 years\, working to promote democracy and develop the organization’s dialogue and conflict resolution instruments. \n\n\n\nShe speaks English\, French\, Spanish\, Portuguese and Croatian. \n\n\n\nMore about this event series: \n\n\n\nFireside Peace Chats series are informal\, intimate chats with peacebuilders who have either lived in for an extended period of time or are from conflict-affected environments. Fireside Peace Chats are a joint initiative of Leiden University College The Hague (LUC)\, Knowledge Platform for Security and Rule of the Law (KPSRL)\, and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH)\, with an aim to open a space where practice\, research and policy in peacebuilding come together in an informal way\, through experience of people on the ground. This initiative aims to contribute to a locally informed paradigm shift in liberal peacebuilding. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLEARN MORE AND REGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Royal Netherlands Society of International Law: Lessons from Courtroom Battles on International Climate Law
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, a significant shift occurred in the global climate regime. Struggling to meet the targets of the Paris Agreement\, states across the world found themselves in a new dynamic. Courts\, originally not envisioned as key players in interpreting and applying international climate law\, took centre stage. This was marked by a landmark judgment from the European Court of Human Rights\, and (forthcoming) Advisory Opinions from the Law of the Sea Tribunal\, the International Court of Justice and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. In over 50 states\, individuals\, civil society groups\, and corporate actors have initiated judicial proceedings to challenge governmental and corporate climate policies\, often expressly relying on international climate law. \n\n\n\nBoth international and national courts play a crucial role in clarifying states’ international obligations and responsibilities. However\, they must navigate the intricate landscapes of global and national politics and grapple with the inherent limitations of their role in complex societal trade-offs in climate transitions and the search for climate justice. \n\n\n\nThis presentation will discuss the lessons that we can draw from international and national caselaw so far. It will evaluate how courts have contributed to developing and implementing international climate law and provide perspectives on how they attempt to balance competing interests in this complex global arena. \n\n\n\nProf. André Nollkaemper\, University Professor of International Law and Sustainability\, University of Amsterdam\, will provide a presentation\, followed by a Q&A and drinks. \n\n\n\nRegistration: Please send an email to contact@knvir.org by Monday 17 June 2024 indicating whether you would like to attend the meeting in person or online.

SUMMARY:KUNO: Tigray reviewed - Northern Ethiopia and the failure of the humanitarian collective
DESCRIPTION:About the event\n\n\n\n‘The international UN-led humanitarian system failed to protect the civilian population in Northern Ethiopia (Tigray\, Afar and Amhara) between November 2020 and April 2023.’ This is the indisputable conclusion of the independent evaluation\, commissioned by the Inter-Agency Humanitarian Evaluation Group\, performed by HERE Geneva and published in early June 2024. \n\n\n\nThe world witnessed large-scale sexual violence and civilians dying of starvation\, as humanitarian personnel were arrested\, detained and tortured. The Ethiopian federal government was highly effective at blocking aid; at the same time UN Agencies underperformed due to a lack of leadership in the response and an absence of clear reporting lines and accountability. \n\n\n\nThese critical constructive conclusions of the HERE-study (based on 186 interviews\, 44 focus group discussions and extensive document reviews) need careful reflection by the humanitarian sector. All the more\, as we witness in Sudan similar mechanisms that prevent the humanitarian sector from building an adequate response. \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\nEd Schenkenberg\, Director of HERE Geneva and leader of the evaluation team.\n\n\n\n\nEd will kick-off the working session by presenting the main results of the study\, after which we will have an open discussion. \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nTo join the session face-to-face please send an email to: kuno@kuno-platform.nl \n\n\n\nTo join the session online via ZOOM please sign up through the button below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSIGN UP FOR THE ZOOM SESSION

SUMMARY:Lab of Labs: Workforce Integration of Refugees in The Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:In November 2023\, The Hague Humanity Hub members Piero Gandini This link opens in a new tab and Yiğit Aksakoğlu launched Lab of Labs This link opens in a new tab: a social laboratory for radical social transformation. The first laboratory sought to host a series of conversations and\, preferably\, actionable steps forward around labor integration\, representation\, and exclusion in the Netherlands. During the first session\, the Restorative Justice principles guided open conversations that fostered understanding and encouraged participation and reflection. This discussion was designed to prepare the scene for a more objective debate about inclusive hiring practices for organizations in peace and justice regarding refugees and asylum seekers. \n\n\n\nBetween March and May 2024\, we ran a survey to learn from Executives\, Managers\, and HR professionals about the current policies and labor participation dynamics within the peace and justice community of the Hague\, focusing on individuals with refugee status and those from minority backgrounds. \n\n\n\nThe survey answers are in\, and we’re eager to gather respondents and non-respondents at The Hague Humanity Hub to discuss the results and open the conversation beyond survey questions. \n\n\n\nThis session is open to all professionals interested in exploring what can be done to improve hiring practices and DEI policies and better understand the state of play for organizations in the Netherlands. \n\n\n\nFor more information or inquiries\, please contact info@pierogandini.com or programming@humanityhub.net \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER AND LEARN MORE

SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night - Behind the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Overview \n\n\n\nIn honour of International Pride Day\, Just Peace This link opens in a new tab in collaboration with Human Rights in the Picture This link opens in a new tab and Hivos This link opens in a new tab will be hosting a Just Peace Movie Night! We will be screening the documentary\, “Behind the Numbers This link opens in a new tab.” \n\n\n\nThis film\, created by Human Rights in the Picture made with director Andy Funnell for Hivos\, follows an intersex person from Zimbabwe\, Ronie\, a lesbian couple from Bangkok\, Anticha and Build\, and a trans person from the Netherlands\, Laura. All experience daily obstacles and challenges in the heteronormative society in which they live. \n\n\n\n#FreetobeME \n\n\n\nThe film was made for the Free to be Me program of Hivos\, which works in 14 countries around the world to better the socioeconomic position of LGBTIQ+ persons. The program supports the communities to advocate for fair laws and regulations and work to influence public opinion. \n\n\n\nProduction \n\n\n\nThe film was made in a climate-friendly way by using local film teams in Zimbabwe\, Thailand and the Netherlands while also paying attention to the representation of queer creators in the teams. This innovative way of making has led to a layering in the film that leads to great accessibility to the stories in the different countries of the Free to be Me program. \n\n\n\nThe film sheds light on and hopes to raise awareness for the socioeconomic exclusion of LGBTIQ+ persons. In the Netherlands tolerance and acceptance of LGBTIQ+ rights is decreasing\, as indicated by the countries drop on the Rainbow Map and Index. For these reason\, we find the need to discuss the issue of socioeconomic inclusion of LGBTIQ+ persons more important than ever. \n\n\n\nJust Peace Movie Nights are film screenings and discussions on important and current issues in the world of peace and justice. \n\n\n\nAttendees are welcome to buy drinks from the bar throughout the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLEARN MORE AND REGISTER

SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night - War on Education
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next edition of Just Peace This link opens in a new tab Movie Nights! For this edition we will be partnering with Euroclio This link opens in a new tab (European Association of History Educators) to screen the film “War on Education This link opens in a new tab.” We will delve into the impact war (particularly in the Ukraine) has on history education and consequently the accessibility of good and nuanced education. \n\n\n\nAbout “War on Education” \n\n\n\nThe showing of the documentary ‘War on Education’ falls under the larger campaign to raise awareness and reflect on the impact of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine. \n\n\n\nThe makers highlight that\, “While the media often highlights the visible – Russian attacks on Ukrainian cites and the news from the frontline\, one critical aspect remains largely overlooked: the impact of war on education.” Creator Stefano di Pietro\, “was inspired to make “War on Education” after having made “Books not Bombs”\, a short film created in 2022\, aimed to gather the funds needed to print the schoolbook “Ukraine and the World”\, when the printing budgets of Ukraine were directed to the war effort.” \n\n\n\nThe documentary features the authors of the textbooks Ukraine and the World\, Iryna Kostyuk and Maryna Kaftan\, who organised interviews\, connected to policy makers\, and helped “find and clear archival footage.” Stefano Di Pietro emphasises that “Talking with many amazing Ukrainians during wartime\, I realised there was a much bigger story to tell\, one that connects to universal and timeless values that I deeply care about\, and I always try to communicate in my films.” \n\n\n\nMoreover\, the documentary features insightful interviews with prominent figures from international NGOs\, governmental bodies\, journalists\, and educators\, “War on Education” deeply covers this issue. The Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine\, as well as Emmanuelle Abrioux\, Chief of Education at UNICEF Ukraine\, and other notable characters in this field\, share their invaluable perspectives as well as possible solutions for the problem. \n\n\n\nProgramme \n\n\n\nDoors open at 17:30. Drinks will be available to purchase at the café. The film screening will start at 18:00. The film will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A. After the formal programming we warmly invite attendees to stay for some casual networking and drinks. \n\n\n\nJust Peace Movie Nights are film screenings and discussions on important and current issues in the world of peace and justice. \n\n\n\nOn our panel we will be joined by the film creator Stefano di Pietro and Euroclio Director Steven Stegers. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, we will be joined by the wonderful staff and participants of the Move4HumanRights This link opens in a new tab Summerschool. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSIGN UP HERE
