SUMMARY:HagueTalks Event: Resilience. Stories of Women Standing Up for Justice
DESCRIPTION:Women and girls are at the forefront of transformative action for justice\, building a world that works better for everyone. Societies with higher levels of gender equality are also characterised by less deforestation and air pollution\, lower levels of conflict\, and improved health of communities. Despite this\, women remain underrepresented in decision-making\, and are often portrayed as passive victims of conflict and climate change rather than holders of diverse knowledge and skills. In this HagueTalks\, three women on the frontlines for justice will tell their personal stories of defending freedom of speech\, fighting climate in justice\, and tackling gender-based violence. \n\n\n\nThis HagueTalks event will take place during the Hague Justice Week 2022 This link opens in a new tab and is part of the World Justice Forum “offsite sessions” program. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \n\n\n\nCamila de la Fuente (Camdelafu) from Mexico will speak about online harassment. She received the 2020 International Women Cartoonist Youth Award and was a finalist in the first Biennial of Illustration organized by Pictoline in 2018.Grace Acan – a survivor and one of the founding members of SEMA- The Global Network of Victims and Survivors to End Wartime Sexual Violence. She will speak about her fight for justice for girls being abducted in war. Grace spent years as a captive of Ugandan rebels\, now she supports casualties of war in rebuilding their lives.Jane Meriwas of Samburu Women Trust in Kenya will speak about women and climate justice. As an indigenous leader she speaks first hand about empowering women to participate in decision-making on land\, natural resources policies that affect the Samburu people; to better understand and defend their environmental\, social and cultural rights. Jane currently holds a fellowship with OHCHR’s Minorities program.\n\n\n\nHaving heard these three frontline experiences\, Hina Jilani\, advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan\, a human rights activist and since 2013 a member of The ELders\, will reflect on these accounts and put them in a broader global perspective. \n\n\n\nThe event is co-organised by IDLO\, World Justice Forum and Hague project Peace and Justice an initiative of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Municipality of the Hague. \n\n\n\nThe event will be followed by the opening of the Exhibition ‘Resilience. SUMMARY:Roundtable: Writing a General Labour History of Africa from the 16th to the 19th centuries
DESCRIPTION:This event is organised in the framework of Africa 2020 (previously postponed due to Covid-19). \n\n\n\nInterest in the history of labour in Africa has experienced a rebirth after a long parenthesis of neglect.  African labour history research enlarged its scope\, characterized by a trend to analyse work beyond wage labour and to focus increasingly on different forms of labour relations\, from commodified forms of labour relations\, typical of the capitalist mode production\, to tributary and reciprocal forms of labour relations. \n\n\n\nA volume published in 2019\, General Labour History of Africa. Workers\, Employers and Governments: 20th and 21st Centuries This link opens in a new tab\, examines key transformations during the colonial and postcolonial periods and offers the first comprehensive study on labour in Africa within the framework of a global labour history perspective. \n\n\n\nNow another volume is under preparation\, under the auspices of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Regional Office for Africa\, which will cover the period from the 16th to the 19th centuries. SUMMARY:peace&justice café: The Future of Democracy (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Join us on June 23 as we turn our focus to democracy: where it stands\, where it’s going\, and what can be done to preserve it. \n\n\n\nDemocracy sits at a critical juncture. Independent monitors have noted that less than 20 percent of the world’s population now live in a ‘free’ country – the lowest level since 1995. From disinformation and political polarisation\, to rising authoritarianism and the erosion of public faith in institutions\, the current challenges to its resilience are myriad. Nonetheless\, the drive from civil society to protect it remains despite these troubling trends. \n\n\n\nAt this next edition of the peace&justice café\, explore how these changes in the landscape affect the work of the peace and justice ecosystem\, network with organisations playing a role in determining the future of democracy\, and come away with new connections\, insights\, and goals. \n\n\n\nIf you would like to share your experiences or have a suggestion of a great organisation you would like to see at this café\, please contact programming@humanityhub.net This link opens in a new tab.

SUMMARY:(Online) The Political Challenge of Migration: In Conversation with Tineke Strik
DESCRIPTION:In the coming decades\, supporting refugees\, internally displaced people (IDPs) and other migrants will likely demand a growing effort from humanitarian organizations. At the same time\, the topic of migration is increasingly being politicized\, placing humanitarian organizations in the middle of a political battle. This is why KUNO is organizing a series of events discussing current trends in migration and their significance for humanitarian actors. \n\n\n\nThe challenge of migration in European Politics\n\n\n\nWhat is new in the EU pact on migration and asylum? How does the EU deal with state-initiated violence against refugees in member states? What are the implications of bilateral deals with countries like Turkey\, Morocco and Libya? The second event of the series on migration and refugees will cover the topic of challenges that migration brings to the EU and how they are currently addressed. \n\n\n\nThe topic will be introduced by Tineke Strik\, Member of the European Parliament (Groen Links\, Greens) and former professor of migration law\, who will be interviewed by journalist and host Bahram Sadeghi. After the interview\, there will be discussion\, with input from Anila Noor (New Women Connectors)\, Ton Huijzer (Independent consultant)\, and the audience. \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual event that will take place via zoom.

SUMMARY:(Online) Indigenous Peoples and Regional Human Rights Systems
DESCRIPTION:Regional human rights systems have often been at the forefront of relevant developments in the rights of indigenous peoples. These systems usually enjoy less institutional constraints than international criminal tribunals and are able to address violations from broader perspectives. This panel will consider how regional human rights mechanisms have approached claims of violations against Indigenous peoples’ rights. SUMMARY:Summer School of 2022 - Conflict Resolution: How to Mediate?
DESCRIPTION:Whether it is Ukraine\, Israel\, Yemen\, or Afghanistan\, conflict is an undeniable part of the domain of international relations. Although the nature of conflict has changed to include different modes of warfare such as drones and private mercenaries\, the main questions surrounding conflict have remained the same\, namely ‘why does a conflict occur?’ and ‘what can be done to solve a given conflict?’. The latter question is where the role of international negotiation in the shape of mediation comes into view. In the words of William Zartman\, conflicts are ‘only ripe for resolution through mediation when a Mutually Hurting Stalemate is reached’. \n\n\n\n Diplomats play a key role in facilitating mediation sessions. But as we all know not every meeting is a success\, indicating that you cannot be a good mediator before becoming a good negotiator. So how do diplomats know when this so-called Mutually Hurting Stalemate is reached? And if so\, where do they meet and who should mediate? If you recognize yourself in these questions then this summer school might exactly be what you are looking for. \n\n\n\nThe program of 2022 includes speakers like Paul Meerts\, Hans van den Berg and practising diplomats. Students are offered the opportunity to expand their (international) network with networking sessions and practice their skills in a diplomatic simulation. In doing so\, participants represent a country or an international organisation\, prepare a position\, and negotiate an agreement.
