SUMMARY:Online event: Protection of Fundamental Rights and the Rule of Law in the EU
DESCRIPTION:Together with the Legal Network for Protection of Democracy from Slovenia\, the NHC invites you to an online seminar on the protection on fundamental rights and rule of law in the EU. The event will be held coming Friday\, 12 November 2021\, from 10:00 to 14:30 CET\, where NHC’s Executive Director Pepijn Gerrits and Programme Manager Joeri Buhrer Tavanier will be part of the panel. \n\n\n\nContinued rule of law backsliding and disrespect by EU member states towards the principles upon which the EU was founded reiterate the need to continue the conversation to protect the rule of law. Alongside raising awareness within our own member state\, cross border cooperation is essential in creating lasting change. \n\n\n\nIn the last two months of the Slovenian EU Presidency\, the NHC together with the Legal Network for Protection of Democracy \, would like to reflect on the developments in the past months within Slovenia and the EU at large. The first session we will zoom in on the narratives and tactics that are used in justifying rule of law backsliding in Hungary and parallels that might be drawn to the current Slovenian context. In the second session we will look at regional relations\, the impact of these relations and how we can use these relations to work together to better defend the rule of law. Find out more here. \n\n\n\nSign up for the event by sending an email pic@pic.si to receive a zoom link or join us via Facebook live here. \n\n\n\nThis event is supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Slovenia.

SUMMARY:Conference ‘Corporate Social Responsibility in the Netherlands'
DESCRIPTION:The regulation of multinational corporations\, especially in situations of negative impact\, poses challenging questions. Current developments show a transformation of voluntary and sector driven guidelines into legally binding CSR obligations that have extraterritorial application. What will this mean for corporations and the people impacted by their conduct? The conference ‘Corporate Social Responsibility in the Netherlands: towards mandatory human rights due diligence legislation’\, organised by the Open Universiteit\, takes place on 12 November 2021. \n\n\n\nA Dutch perspective: national and international exchange\n\n\n\nThe conference addresses this question from a Dutch and comparative perspective by discussing recent legislative developments in the Netherlands and how these are influenced by international developments. Also\, because the Netherlands hosts a significant number of multinational corporations\, its regulatory landscape might in turn have consequences across the globe\, as the different cases against Shell prove. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nProf. dr. Nicola Jägers will deliver the key note in which she reflects on the Dutch developments against the broader regional and international developments\, setting the stage for the panel discussions. Policy makers\, lawyers\, academics and NGOs will offer different perspectives on the following three topics:  \n\n\n\nThe implementation of mandatory human rights due diligenceThe business-state nexus and institutional incentivesThe impact of mandatory human rights due diligence on access to remedies\n\n\n\nSee full program. \n\n\n\nAudience\n\n\n\nThe conference will be of interest to both a Dutch and international audience and we invite both academics\, and other stakeholders with an interest in the topic to participate. \n\n\n\nPractical details\n\n\n\nThe conference takes place on on 12 November 2021 from approximately 10:30 until 16:30h.Location: The Hague Humanity Hub\, Fluwelen Burgwal 58\, The HagueThe conference is free to attend and registration is required.\n\n\n\n\nRegister!

SUMMARY:TOWARDS A LANDMINE FREE WORLD
DESCRIPTION:Until November 20\, the photo exhibition Towards a Landmine Free World can be seen in the Atrium in the City Hall. This exhibition is organized in the context of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC) that will take place from November 15 until November 19 at the World Forum in the Hague. \n\n\n\nMine Action This link opens in a new tabThis photo exhibition is organized in light of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC). This UN Treaty is an important instrument in mitigating the use and impact of landmines. More than 60 countries and areas worldwide are faced with a landmine problem. Landmines and other explosive remnants of war still cause 10 to 15 victims every day\, of which almost half are children. In addition\, landmines make large areas unsafe for construction and agriculture. To improve the safety of people in mine-affected countries and to address the root causes of instability\, it is vital that countries invest in Mine Action. \n\n\n\nPresidency the Netherlands Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC)The Netherlands is the 8th largest donor worldwide in Mine Action. This past year\, the Netherlands was President of the APMBC This link opens in a new tab. During the Netherlands Presidency\, three important pillars were highlighted: Innovation – by supporting innovative solutions\, such as the use of 3D printed mines for training purposes. Inclusivity – by including all needs of mine-affected communities in demining\, with a specific focus on mental health and psychosocial support. (Local) Capacity Building – by sharing knowledge and expertise among mine clearance authorities worldwide. Every year States and organizations meet to discuss the progress of the Convention in a Meeting of States Parties (MSP). The 19th MSP will be held from 15 to 19 November 2021 in the World Forum This link opens in a new tab in The Hague. \n\n\n\nPartnersThe Netherlands supports six organizations that are committed to Mine Action: The United Nations Mine Action Service This link opens in a new tab (UNMAS); Humanity and Inclusion This link opens in a new tab (HI); The HALO Trust This link opens in a new tab; Mines Advisory Group This link opens in a new tab (MAG); Danish Refugee Council This link opens in a new tab (DRC)\, formerly known as Danish Demining Group (DDG); Geneva International Center for Humanitarian Demining This link opens in a new tab (GICHD). \n\n\n\nThe photos in this exhibition come from the partner organizations mentioned above and from the International Campaign to Ban Landmines This link opens in a new tab (ICBL)\, a global network of non-governmental organizations working towards a mine-free world. The photos were taken in different regions of the world: from Colombia and Burkina Faso to Iraq and Ukraine. The images show the various activities of Mine Action: from victim assistance and the clearance of mines and other explosives to risk education. All of these activities are essential to ensure that people can live in safe conditions and that mine-affected countries can recover economically and socially. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition was made possible by the City Council of The Hague This link opens in a new tab and is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs This link opens in a new tab. \n\n\n\nAll people depicted in the photos have given explicit permission for the use of these photos. SUMMARY:Cities and their global networks - reshaping global governance and international law?
DESCRIPTION:The T.M.C. Asser Instituut cordially invites you to attend our dialogue and panel discussion to celebrate the publication of the ground-breaking Research Handbook on International Law and Cities\, by editors Helmut Aust (Freie Universität Berlin) and Janne E. Nijman (Asser Institute). During the event\, mayor of The Hague Jan van Zanen will receive the first hard copy. A panel of city network experts and international law scholars will discuss the Research handbook’s seminal findings\, followed by a Q & A and a reception. \n\n\n\nToday\, 54 per cent of the world’s population live in cities and towns\, and that number is growing every day. Cities and their networks aim to reshape international life\, for example by being at the table of climate change negotiations – including the upcoming climate change conference COP 26 in Glasgow – or by turning to the United Nations for support for their housing policies and attempts to protect life in cities against the aberrations of the global economy. \n\n\n\nThe role of cities in international law and governance is changing as well. Globalisation and urbanisation have affected cities and their relationship to the international. Within the context of the United Nations\, for instance\, the New Urban Agenda was adopted in 2016 in Quito\, pursuant to the Sustainable Development Goal 11\, which stipulates the ambition of the international community to ‘Make cities and human settlements inclusive\, safe\, resilient and sustainable’. While the international has ‘turned urban’\, cities turned global. \n\n\n\nDuring an early evening event on November 17\, we will discuss these developments first with the Mayor of the City of Peace and Justice\, Mr Jan van Zanen. Mr Van Zanen has been active in transnational city networks in various functions and can reflect on these developments from first-hand experience. The discussion will then continue with a panel of experts who will shed light on the role of cities and their networks from various angles. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nPreliminary programme \n\n\n\n18.00 – Food for thought – appetizers & drinks \n\n\n\n18.45 – Welcome by Prof. Janne E. NijmanConversation with Mr Jan van Zanen\, Mayor of the City of Peace and Justice The Hague \n\n\n\n19.15 – Panel discussion (Moderator: Prof. Helmut Aust\, Freie Universität\, Berlin) \n\n\n\nDr Marlène Siméon\, Director of Operations\, Policy & Advocacy of The Council of European Municipalities and Regions in Brussels – CEMR is the oldest and broadest European association of local and regional governments. \n\n\n\nProf. André Nollkaemper\, Professor of International Law\, University of Amsterdam\, and the Dean of the Amsterdam Law School.Q&A \n\n\n\n20.15 – Concluding remarks by Janne Nijman and Helmut AustReception

SUMMARY:Jobtech for Youth Employment in the Middle East - An ecosystem approach

SUMMARY:Impact of COVID on Violent Non-State Actors
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday 18 November\, 1600-1730 (CET)\, ICCT is hosting an online Live Briefing on The Impact of COVID-19 on Violent Non-State Actors.   \n\n\n\nThe COVID-19 pandemic has radically transformed the security landscape\, shaping the actions of both terrorist and counter-terrorist actors. To evaluate and predict these changes induced by the COVID-19 Pandemic\, researchers at Leiden University have surveyed 142 terrorism experts. \n\n\n\nBased on this survey\, this webinar will discuss some of the dominant assumptions amongst these experts on the impact of the pandemic on violent non-state actors. The project team – led by Dr Yannick Veilleux-Lepage – will be joined by three groups of experts discussing major themes arising from the survey. Dr. David Hofmann and Dr. Bàrbara Molas will discuss how violent non-state actors are adapting to the changing security environment. Dr. Leah West will discuss whether the pandemic has hampered states’ abilities to counter and respond to violent non-state actors. Dr. Eviane Leidig will discuss the implications and change in the nature of extremist propaganda during the pandemic. The webinar will be moderated by Dr. Teun van Dongen. \n\n\n\nThis event is partly funded by the Canadian Network for Research on Terrorism\, Security\, and Society’s small research project\, titled Surveying Expert Assumptions on Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic in the CT/CVE Field. \n\n\n\nThe briefing will be concluded with a Q&A. \n\n\n\nPresenter: Dr Yannick Veilleux-Lepage \, Assistant Professor of Terrorism and Political Violence – Leiden University \n\n\n\nModerator: Dr. Teun van Dongen\, Senior Research Fellow and Programme Lead\, Current and Emerging Threats – International Centre for Counter-Terrorism \n\n\n\nPanellists: \n\n\n\nDr. David Hofmann: Associate Professor of Sociology – University of New Brunswick \n\n\n\nDr. Bàrbara Molas: Postdoctoral Fellow – University of New Brunswick \n\n\n\nDr. Leah West: Assistant Professor of International Affairs – Carleton University. \n\n\n\nDr. Eviane Leidig: Research Fellow in the Current and Emerging Threats programme – International Centre for Counter-Terrorism \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:The EU and its Eastern Neighbourhood'
DESCRIPTION:The event takes place with collaboration of the city of The Hague and under the flag of the Conference on the Future of Europe (COFE). The COFE gives inhabitants of our shared European continent the chance to make their voice heard! \n\n\n\nLINKS Europe\, in collaboration of The City of The Hague and with the support of The Hague Humanity Hub\, cordially invites you to participate in a one-day conference with the theme: ‘The EU and its Eastern neighbourhood’. The event is the third in our series\, Conversations on the future of Europe in the World\, and aims to contribute to the debate within the framework of The Conference on the Future of Europe. \n\n\n\nEastern Europe is the EU’s back yard. Geographically it shares the continent; historically it is connected through centuries of interaction\, religious affinity and more. EU foreign policy cannot succeed unless it is successful first in the Eastern neighbourhood. Whilst that is possible\, it is by no means a certainty. Between the EU and Russia – Europe’s giant neighbour to the East – are the Eastern Partnership countries. Three of them – Georgia\, Moldova\, and Ukraine – are EU Associated states with aspirations for EU membership; the three others have closer relations with Russia\, with Belarussharing a Union State; Armenia being a member of the CSTO and EEAU; and Azerbaijan\, whilst a non-aligned country\, also claiming a strategic relationshipwith Russia. \n\n\n\nThe EU has since 2009 sought to manage its relationship with these diverse group of countries through the Eastern Partnership with mixed results. This one-day conference\, coming as it does on the eve of a crucial EU-Eastern Partnership summit in December\, will take stock of how this important and costly EU instrument has performed\, and how it can work in the future\, in three sessions: \n\n\n\nSession one\, 09:30-11:45 – The EU and the process of reform and renewal in the Eastern Neighbourhood: Six countries; six nuances and a giant elephant in the roomSession two\, 12:15-14:15 – The EU and conflicts in the Eastern NeighbourhoodSession three\, 14:30-16:30 – The EU and the rule of law in the Eastern Neighbourhood: The case of Ukraine\n\n\n\nPlease note that the event will be held under strict 3G COVID-19 protocols – namely\, all attendees must show proof of vaccination\, proof of recovery\, or a negative test no more than 24-hours old. There will be no exceptions. \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Community Programming Board
DESCRIPTION:The CPB was created to advise the Hub on developing the community and ensure that the Hub programming is of value to both the community and ecosystem by identifying and creating opportunities to connect and collaborate. After experimenting with this in 2020 we would like to bring it to the next level this year. We will also be inviting new members to constitute a cross section of the community with about 12 people. Joining the CPB is a commitment to join 7-8 meetings per year. \n\n\n\nSome of the key activities for this year will include: \n\n\n\nPut to practice the seasonal quarterly theme concept for Hub programming that we developed together last year Develop a cornerstone event format to foster connection and collaboration within the Hague ecosystem on specific themes Keep developing member peer to peer groups Continue developing the Hub as an SDG House (first project: SDG Traineeship programme) Co-create\, identify and leverage ad hoc programming and event opportunities for the community\n\n\n\nOther potential activities on the horizon include the development of the Hub as a public debating platform\, activities to boost the international reputation of the Hague ecosystem\, and further cultivate the Hub as hub for development and access to talent. \n\n\n\nPlease send an email to programming@humanityhub.net if you would like to attend. \n\n\n\nNote: The Community Programming board is set\, but members can join the meetings as guests.

SUMMARY:Emerging Technologies in Peacebuilding and Prevention - Lessons Learned from Humanitarian Actors - Practitioners Virtual Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 2021 Emerging Technologies in Peacebuilding and Prevention – Lessons Learned from Humanitarian Actors – Practitioners Virtual Workshop\n\n\n\nRegister now to secure your place and join colleagues and practitioners across the globe as they share their work and lessons learned from emerging technologies in humanitarian and peacebuilding fields.  \n\n\n\nThis virtual workshop will provide an opportunity for attendees to discuss the current and future applications of emerging technologies in peacebuilding and learn from humanitarian actors and their experiences. The workshop will create a space for sharing both successes and failures\, while envisioning together how to increase the use and impact of data and data-driven approaches in peacebuilding and conflict prevention. \n\n\n\nAbout the Emerging Technologies in Peacebuilding and Prevention Virtual Workshop \n\n\n\nAs conflict and violence become increasingly complex\, peacebuilding and prevention practitioners are searching for novel approaches to tackle the growing challenge. Emerging technologies and data science methods have been recognized as potential tools to tackle some of these challenges across the humanitarian-development-peace nexus.  \n\n\n\nHumanitarian and peacebuilding work are carried out in similar contexts—in fragile countries\, and with vulnerable populations. Similar settings bring similar challenges and responsibilities\, which makes sharing lessons even more vital to this work. Humanitarian actors are often ahead in innovating and more advanced in their evaluation methodologies of using emerging technologies\, avoiding the trap of techno-solutionism. Advanced analytics\, machine learning\, drones\, 3D printing\, blockchain\, and virtual reality are just some of the methods that have already been transforming humanitarian assistance around the world.  \n\n\n\nThrough efforts to work across the humanitarian-development-peace (HDP) triple nexus\, many actors have already recognized linkages between their efforts and emphasized the need to work together to meet peoples’ needs more effectively\, mitigate risks and vulnerabilities\, and sustain peace. Exchanging those lessons in the field of emerging technologies is a natural part and the next step of these efforts.  \n\n\n\nObjectives \n\n\n\nThe overall objective is to strengthen connections and facilitate exchange on lessons learned on applying emerging technologies by humanitarians in fragile and conflict-affected contexts\, to help peacebuilding and prevention practitioners apply similar methods or avoid known pitfalls in their work.  \n\n\n\nFormat \n\n\n\nThis international workshop is the fourth in a series\, building on previous convenings in New York (2019)\, the Hague (2020)\, and the virtual Early Warning/Early Action workshop This link opens in a new tab in May 2021.  \n\n\n\nThe workshop will provide a combination of live and pre-recorded content: expert discussions\, book discussions\, pre-recorded lightning talks\, podcasts\, social hour gatherings\, workshops\, and more.  \n\n\n\nThe conference is organized by the NYU Center on International Cooperation\, in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands\, and with support from the United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)’s Centre for Humanitarian Data. \n\n\n\n\nRead more and register

SUMMARY:Lessons from Afghanistan: Implications for the Theory and Practice of War\, Peace and Justice
DESCRIPTION:Online Conference with Hybrid elements \n\n\n\nAfter two decades of post-9/11 Western and international engagement in Afghanistan\, foreign military troops withdrew in August 2021 and left behind many Afghans who are now facing an uncertain future under the re-installed Taliban regime. This moment calls for a reflection on what the lessons from Afghanistan mean for the future of the theory and policy practice of core issues related to war\, peace and justice. \n\n\n\nConference 2 & 3 December 2021\n\n\n\nThis two-day conference seeks to bring together scholars\, civil society representatives\, and policy-makers to contribute to a comprehensive exchange about military and political intervention in the region\, not only from a Western perspective\, but also from regional and Afghan perspectives.  We invite contributions that discuss the implications for the study of\, inter alia\, military intervention\, comprehensive approaches to peacebuilding (local and external approaches)\, development\, good governance\, democratisation\, the promotion of human rights (including the cross-cutting women\, peace and security agenda)\, migration\, geopolitical implications and the role of NATO\, the EU and bilateral/multilateral approaches. We also invite policymakers\, practitioners\, and civil society representatives to draw on successes and failures to develop concrete suggestions for future policy improvements in the fields related to the above-mentioned topics. \n\n\n\nEach conference day will feature panels on distinct themes. The conference will conclude with a Policy-Scholar Nexus round-table. The goal is to create a knowledge network and to produce two major publications with selected contributions (a Special Issue or Forum and an Edited Volume). \n\n\n\nCall for Papers and Policy Think Pieces\n\n\n\nThe organizers invite contributions from both early career and senior scholars as well as from members of civil society groups and policymakers in the form of a short paper (no longer than 2.000 words) and/or think piece of the same length\, addressing one or more of the issues outlined above with a view to contribute to a comprehensive review of 20 years of international engagement in Afghanistan and to recommendations for research and policies related to war\, peace and justice. \n\n\n\nDeadlines\n\n\n\nPlease submit your Abstract of 500 words to Corinna Jentzsch (c.jentzsch@fsw.leidenuniv.nl)with the subject line ‘Afghanistan Conference’ by 20 October 2021. \n\n\n\nSuccessful applicants will be notified by 1 November 2021. \n\n\n\nContact\n\n\n\nFor further information\, please do not hesitate to contact the organizing committee: \n\n\n\nMatthew Hoye This link opens in a new tabj.m.hoye@fgga.leidenuniv.nl This link opens in a new tabCorinna Jentzsch This link opens in a new tabc.jentzsch@fsw.leidenuniv.nl This link opens in a new tabJoachim Koops This link opens in a new tabj.a.koops@fgga.leidenuniv.nl

SUMMARY:Seeking systemic action for refugees and migrants
DESCRIPTION:The overarching theme of the event is ‘Seeking systemic action for refugees and migrants’. \n\n\n\nThe focus will be particularly on systemic action for the protection of the most vulnerable\, whether refugees in camps\, migrants on the move\, or (undocumented) migrants closer to home. \n\n\n\nEach year on 18 December we celebrate International Migrants Day. Protection of people on the move\, including migrants and refugees\, continues to be more relevant than ever in the face of COVID-19 pandemic\, continued migration streams and more recently the situation in Afghanistan. \n\n\n\nThere is a need to focus on durable and systemic action – at international\, national and sub-national level. What can we learn from recent research findings? What actions can various actors take and how can they collaborate to take steps towards finding durable action? \n\n\n\nThis second episode of InSightS Live will be centered around a key ISS research theme of migration and diversity. Specifically\, we will look at the question of how we can move away from ad-hoc half-solutions towards durable and systemic action for refugees and migrants. \n\n\n\nWe will look at this issue from several perspectives and roles: civil society\, policy and research. How can these different actors contribute to more durable solutions for people on the move? \n\n\n\nThe conversation will be ISS at its finest: critical\, based on real-world insights\, bringing together a kaleidoscope of perspectives. Topic veteran or newbie\, this episode is relevant for us all and you are welcome to join! \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:P2P Facilitation: Crocodile River & Challenges in Facilitation
DESCRIPTION:This session will be hosted by Hans van den Berg from The Young Diplomat. This session will be about Crocodile River\, a provocative thought experiment\, and also gives you the opportunity to share your challenges regarding facilitation with other experts in the field! \n\n\n\nCrocodile River\n\n\n\nCrocodile river is a provocative thought experiment. In this case\, put in the perspective of international negotiation. Both the story and the exercise will bring to light differences in culture\, norms\, values\, and how to deal with certain situations. Crocodile river highlights how\, in negotiations\, we cannot separate people from the problem (as suggested in getting to yes). You will be challenged in your negotiations skills while at the same time gaining new insights\, both in relation to cultural sensitivity as well as resolving conflict situations. \n\n\n\nIn this Facilitation P2P\, we will discuss the story and the reasoning for our own behaviour and help to understand the behaviour of others. By the end of this session\, you will have gained insights into cultural differences\, negotiations skills\, and how to approach difficult situations where red lines seem impossible to overcome. \n\n\n\nPlease drop a line to programming@humanityhub.net This link opens in a new tab if you want to join!  Note: This event is for Hub members only.
