SUMMARY:Ideation Session with The Hague Hacks + Movies That Matter + Border Session
DESCRIPTION:The Hague Hacks\, in partnership with Movies that Matter and Border Sessions\, is excited to invite you to our Ideation Session on March 25th\, at 15.30\, at The Filmhuis in The Hague. \nFilm is a powerful tool against social indifference. In the footsteps of the Amnesty International Film Festival\, Movies that Matter continues to share stories that open one’s eyes to human rights injustices and the activists who defend these human rights. Movies that Matter believes that film has the unprecedented capacity to raise awareness and provide new insight. The Hague Hacks believes that film provides a spark for empathy\, discussion and connection that allows people of different backgrounds to become passionate about human rights and brainstorm innovative solutions. \nThe Ideation Session on March 25th brings together the worlds of peace\, justice and technology through film. Guests will view one of three films presented by Movies That Matter. The films capture the lives\, struggles\, and advocacy of human rights defenders from Thailand (Ghost Fleet This link opens in a new tab)\, South Africa (Eveything Must Fall This link opens in a new tab) and the USA (The Feeling of Being Watched This link opens in a new tab). After viewing the films\, a dinner will be served at 18:30 as part of the evening’s festivities. The Ideation Session – a discussion and brainstorm between participants – will take place after dinner which participants have the opportunity to ask questions to the human rights defenders and explore the complexities of these challenges beyond the films. \nIn this brief but intense brainstorming session\, we hope that conversations between participants will spark new understandings of the human rights issue and potential tech-solutions will emerge as a result. We believe that this format of problem-solving creates networks and ideas that live on long after the event itself. The event will close with a recap and short presentation. \nThe Ideation Sessions (this includes the film screening\, dinner and ideation) is completely free. However\, there is a limited number of places available. First come\, first serve. \nIf you miss your chance to participate in the Ideation Session\, but still want to attend the film screening\, tickets are available here with Movies That Matter. SUMMARY:Internship Helpdesk - Collaboration Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to contribute to the development of talent for international peace\, justice and humanitarian action? \nWould you like to support the development of The Hague as a centre which offers opportunities for building the work skills and/or applied research capacity of students in the fields of humanitarian aid and international peace and justice? \nIn partnership with the founder of this idea\, Tobias Schmitz from GIWEH\, we are exploring the idea of creating an “internship helpdesk”; a mechanism for interns that will match the needs of knowledge institutions and Humanity Hub members. The helpdesk would help to optimise opportunities for employers to access research or practical support from students. Knowledge institutions gain access to a large network where students can learn work skills\, gain work experience and practical experience in the workforce to enhance their skills and network. \nWe’ll be hosting an exploratory conversation to develop a coalition of parties who could take this idea to the next step. Our hope is that the internship helpdesk will optimise the experience of interns\, as well as the NGOs and organisation that host them. \nIf you’re interested in joining the discussion\, and haven’t received an invitation to participate\, please email mitch.sayoc@humanityhub.net

SUMMARY:How Can We Make Justice Accessible to All?
DESCRIPTION:Everyone has the right to justice. However all around the world\, people and communities have difficulty getting access to justice. The need to improve access to justice is\, therefore\, part of the Sustainable Development Goals. During this HagueTalks you will hear personal stories from people all around the world that work with local communities to improve their access to justice. How can we make the right to justice a reality that is experienced by everybody? \nDuring this HagueTalks you will hear from journalists and law practitioners about the ways that people and their communities are accessing justice. And how they are dealing with issues such as inheritance\, violence\, corruption\, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Challenges with accessing justice can be found all over the world and certainly also in The Netherlands. What is universal about our needs for justice? And how can we create an accessible juridical system that respects this needs\, without losing track of important juridical values such as the right of suspects and accused? \nRegister and learn more about the speakers on the Hague Talks website

SUMMARY:Human Rights & Artificial Intelligence in World Perspective
DESCRIPTION:China and America and world leaders in AI and technology investment\, plugging several billion euros every year. Similarly\, the United Nations pays a lot of attention to a worldwide responsible AI Strategy and here in Europe\, there is a commitment to a strategy based on a ‘human centric’ approach. The Netherlands is also attempting to place its own stamp on the use of AI through a sectoral approach and the formation of an AI research ecosystem. With the AINED initiative\, the Netherlands has already taken the first steps that are now being built upon. \nYet many questions remain; how can the opportunities offered by AI be used optimally worldwide to tackle social issues\, if at the same time outcomes of the cultural\, social and political impact of artificial technologies are still hotly contested? Is the answer at the national level\, should governments and corporates guarantee social norms\, values and human rights\, both in terms of policy and in the application of AI? Do we need to think differently about fundamental rights such as “equal treatment” in the Digital Age? What do cultural or interpretational differences in terms such as ‘transparency’ and ‘interpretability’ mean when AI makes decisions about the legislation that applies to citizens\, such as whether or not to grant benefits via an algorithm? Does the use of data lead to new forms of discrimination or may it exacerbate (unintentional) cultural and social inequalities? \nThese questions only scratch the surface\, we hope to address a whole range of diverse questions with you on 11 April. \nThe programme for the day:\n14.30: Registration \n15.00: Welcome by ECP + the Municipality of The Hague \n15.15: Speech Human Rights ambassador – Marriët Schuurman \n15.30: Speech Judith Alkema – Wageningen University & Research (she has carried out research on behalf of the UN) \n15.45: Speech Arjan El Fassed – Google \n16.00: Speech NGO \n16.15: Debate \n17.00: Drinks & Bites \n  \nRegister here

SUMMARY:NWO Matchmaking Meeting - Responsible Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Designing for public values in a digital world \nNew technological developments such as Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, Internet of Things\, Big Data\, and Blockchain can solve problems and help realise shared values and ideals. At the same time\, other public values are at stake\, such as privacy\, security\, and democracy. How can these values be taken into account in a transparent and responsible way in designing and implementing new systems\, applications\, models and protocols? What solutions are there for fundamental conflicts of values in the digital society? \nTo answer this question\, NWO (The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) opened a new research programme in unique collaboration with The Hague Municipal Council\, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations\, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, the Ministry of Defence\, and the Ministry of Justice and Security: ‘Responsible Innovation. Designing for public values in a digital world’. This research programme is part of the larger NWO-programme Responsible Innovation (MVI)\, in which research is carried out into the societal and ethical aspects of new technologies. \nApplications for funding relate to one of the following four innovative themes: \n• New digital technology in the modern rule of law \n• Privacy and human rights in new digital networks \n• Big Data science for a democratic public space \n• Complexity as a consequence of hyper-connectivity for public and private actors \nRoom for four new research projects\, in collaboration with private organisations \nThe budget of this new programme is over three million euro. This means that four research project can start with a maximum budget of 750.000 euro. Private parties can join a project by (jointly) contributing at least 10% of the total costs of the project (in kind and/or in cash). By investing in the project\, companies and other parties have the opportunity to be the first to make use of the newest insights. To stimulate this\, all parties that are involved in one of the research projects are part of a valorisation committee\, where ideas can be exchanged on the progress of the research and the possibilities for valorisation. \nJoin the meeting on April 12 \nIn the morning of Friday April 12\, the parties who initiated the research programme as well as the researchers who are working on project proposals come together in The Hague. Is your company interested in the themes of the programme? We warmly invite you to join the meeting! This gives you the opportunity to learn how \nRegister by sending an e-mail to mvi@nwo.nl with the following information: \n1) Name\, organisation\, contact details and – if applicable – dietary restrictions. \n2) Which of the following four themes has your interest? (multiple options possible) \n• New digital technology in the modern rule of law \n• Privacy and human rights in new digital networks \n• Big Data science for a democratic public space \n• Complexity as a consequence of hyper-connectivity for public and private actors \nFor further questions\, please contact Sander Klaassen via s.klaasse@nwo.nl

SUMMARY:Meeting Dutch Platform Leave No One Behind
DESCRIPTION:In 2015\, 193 countries adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. For The Spindle\, powered by Partos\, reason to establish the Dutch Platform Leave No One Behind. \nThe Dutch Platform Leave No One Behind consists of organisations and actors in the field of development cooperation. They develop\, share and promote knowledge\, innovative solutions and policies that contribute to ending poverty and exclusion. The Platform (+/- 50 members) meets regularly to discuss several issues related to the topic Leave No One Behind. SUMMARY:Future Session #3: Navigating the Data Journey Methodology (Akvo)
DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, The Spindle and the Hague Humanity Hub collaborate in organising a series of (almost) monthly inspirational working sessions for our mutual communities! In these sessions\, we’ll explore the relevance of (technological) trends for the future of development cooperation. The sessions are high in energy and always involve an expert. See what’s going on and get more grip on the implications and ideas that would work!\nFuture Session #3\nIn this interactive session\, Marten Schoonman This link opens in a new tab\, services manager at Akvo\, will facilitate a workshop on the data journey methodology. The methodology consists of four phases: Design\, Capture\, Understand and Act. They form the starting point for organisations to ensure data is used to contribute to lasting and inclusive impact. Akvo Foundation partners with governments and non-governmental organisations to improve the way they implement development programmes and make decisions using data since. \n“Having the right knowledge and resources to effectively collaborate can be a challenge. So how do you ensure success\, from designing and implementing your programme to creating sustainable change? We provide a series of services to ensure you succeed at every step of your programme. We support these services with our open source data platform to help you capture\, clean\, visualise and share your data in the best way possible.”\n– Our approach to your data journey | Akvo This link opens in a new tab \nDuring this Future Session\, we’ll discuss how the data journey methodology can help you to: \n\nAlign distributed teams and bolster co-ownership of your programme\nAchieve clarity and oversight on every aspect of your programme\nMake confident management decisions based on accurate and reliable data\nShowcase your results to the people who need to see them\nGain lessons learned to improve future programmes\n\nTo sign up\, see The Spindle website
