SUMMARY:Future Sessions #1: Data\, Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:The Spindle and the Hague Humanity Hub are organising a series of (almost) monthly inspirational working sessions for our mutual communities! In these sessions\, we’ll explore the relevance of (technological) trends for the future of development cooperation. The sessions are high in energy and always involve an expert. See what’s going on and get more grip on the implications and ideas that would work! \nData might be the “oil of the 21st century”. But why it so powerful? What are the opportunities of data for your organisation? How is data used for artificial intelligence and how does artificial intelligence even work in practice? These and many more questions will be answered during this introductory session. \nIn this session\, Erwin Haas\, the founder and CEO of Landscape is involved. Landscape makes data science available for every organisation. With a strong focus on the human element of what they’re implementing\, they use machine learning and artificial intelligence to create data-driven solutions. \nWe’ll focus on: \n– Learning about the basics of data\, machine learning and artificial intelligence (including many examples).\n– Learning how to recognise opportunities for data-driven improvement.\n– Investigating actual artificial intelligence solutions that are suitable for your organisation. \nSeize this chance to explore the ideas you might already have\, and to find inspiration for other new possibilities. Also\, no prior knowledge of data or programming is required! \nRegister here

SUMMARY:‘Vulnerability versus Resilience': The politics of language in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation
DESCRIPTION:The concept of vulnerability has been a key concept in studies of disasters and climate change. Vulnerability brings out the socially produced ways in which groups are rendered safe or unsafe in view of hazards. The concept has been a radical move in disaster studies as it took the natural out of natural disasters\, and in focusing on issues like power and inequality as factors that turn the occurrence of a hazard into a disaster. \nToday\, the concept of vulnerability has partly been overtaken by resilience. Increasingly\, people (even disadvantaged people) have begun to be considered as resilient\, with the capacities to organise\, resist\, learn\, change and adapt. Adaptation has become the slogan and the proposed solution to the problem of adjusting human systems to actual or expected climatic stimuli. \nThe roundtable will discuss whether\, and if so\, how vulnerability still matters? Does resilience indeed help to focus disaster response on communities? What happens to social inequalities and the role of the state’s duties to protect their citizens?\n\nFeaturing: Greg Bankoff\, Kenneth Hewitt\, Terry Cannon\, Lisa Schipper\, Luis Artur\, Sarah Bradshaw\, and Ben Wisner. \nClick here to find more information about the speakers and the programme. The round table will be concluded with drinks\, offered by IHSA \nPlease register by sending an email to: kuno@kuno-platform.nl

SUMMARY:Hybrids and Mixed Processes: Process Pluralism and the Integrity of Process?
DESCRIPTION:Leiden Socio-Legal Series Lecture \n\n\n\n\nThis paper discusses the varieties of hybridization of dispute resolution processes from “purer” forms of negotiation\, mediation\, arbitration and adjudication\, and surveys how these processes have now been combined and hybridized to form such processes as “med-arb”\, “arb-med”\,  ombuds\, online dispute resolution (ODR)\, and other forms of dispute resolution and decision making. I use the jurisprudence of legal philosopher/American law professor Lon Fuller to ask whether each of these processes has its own “morality” or “integrity” and internal rules of consistency\, ethics and process\, that might be compromised by such combinations\, or whether hybridity represents a positive and creative force for process adaptability in a “post-modern” age. \n\n\n\n\nMore information: www.vvi.leidenuniv.nl \n\n\n\n\nAbout: \nCarrie Menkel-Meadow is the Chancellor’s Professor of Law and Political Science at the University of California\, Irvine and A.B. Chettle Jr. Professor of Law\, Dispute Resolution and Civil Procedure Emerita at Georgetown University Law Center.

SUMMARY:Ideation Session with The Hague Hacks + Movies That Matter + Border Session
DESCRIPTION:The Hague Hacks\, in partnership with Movies that Matter and Border Sessions\, is excited to invite you to our Ideation Session on March 25th\, at 15.30\, at The Filmhuis in The Hague. \nFilm is a powerful tool against social indifference. In the footsteps of the Amnesty International Film Festival\, Movies that Matter continues to share stories that open one’s eyes to human rights injustices and the activists who defend these human rights. Movies that Matter believes that film has the unprecedented capacity to raise awareness and provide new insight. The Hague Hacks believes that film provides a spark for empathy\, discussion and connection that allows people of different backgrounds to become passionate about human rights and brainstorm innovative solutions. \nThe Ideation Session on March 25th brings together the worlds of peace\, justice and technology through film. Guests will view one of three films presented by Movies That Matter. The films capture the lives\, struggles\, and advocacy of human rights defenders from Thailand (Ghost Fleet This link opens in a new tab)\, South Africa (Eveything Must Fall This link opens in a new tab) and the USA (The Feeling of Being Watched This link opens in a new tab). After viewing the films\, a dinner will be served at 18:30 as part of the evening’s festivities. The Ideation Session – a discussion and brainstorm between participants – will take place after dinner which participants have the opportunity to ask questions to the human rights defenders and explore the complexities of these challenges beyond the films. \nIn this brief but intense brainstorming session\, we hope that conversations between participants will spark new understandings of the human rights issue and potential tech-solutions will emerge as a result. We believe that this format of problem-solving creates networks and ideas that live on long after the event itself. The event will close with a recap and short presentation. \nThe Ideation Sessions (this includes the film screening\, dinner and ideation) is completely free. However\, there is a limited number of places available. First come\, first serve. \nIf you miss your chance to participate in the Ideation Session\, but still want to attend the film screening\, tickets are available here with Movies That Matter. SUMMARY:Internship Helpdesk - Collaboration Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to contribute to the development of talent for international peace\, justice and humanitarian action? \nWould you like to support the development of The Hague as a centre which offers opportunities for building the work skills and/or applied research capacity of students in the fields of humanitarian aid and international peace and justice? \nIn partnership with the founder of this idea\, Tobias Schmitz from GIWEH\, we are exploring the idea of creating an “internship helpdesk”; a mechanism for interns that will match the needs of knowledge institutions and Humanity Hub members. The helpdesk would help to optimise opportunities for employers to access research or practical support from students. Knowledge institutions gain access to a large network where students can learn work skills\, gain work experience and practical experience in the workforce to enhance their skills and network. \nWe’ll be hosting an exploratory conversation to develop a coalition of parties who could take this idea to the next step. Our hope is that the internship helpdesk will optimise the experience of interns\, as well as the NGOs and organisation that host them. \nIf you’re interested in joining the discussion\, and haven’t received an invitation to participate\, please email mitch.sayoc@humanityhub.net

SUMMARY:How Can We Make Justice Accessible to All?
DESCRIPTION:Everyone has the right to justice. However all around the world\, people and communities have difficulty getting access to justice. The need to improve access to justice is\, therefore\, part of the Sustainable Development Goals. During this HagueTalks you will hear personal stories from people all around the world that work with local communities to improve their access to justice. How can we make the right to justice a reality that is experienced by everybody? \nDuring this HagueTalks you will hear from journalists and law practitioners about the ways that people and their communities are accessing justice. And how they are dealing with issues such as inheritance\, violence\, corruption\, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Challenges with accessing justice can be found all over the world and certainly also in The Netherlands. What is universal about our needs for justice? And how can we create an accessible juridical system that respects this needs\, without losing track of important juridical values such as the right of suspects and accused? \nRegister and learn more about the speakers on the Hague Talks website

SUMMARY:Human Rights & Artificial Intelligence in World Perspective
DESCRIPTION:China and America and world leaders in AI and technology investment\, plugging several billion euros every year. Similarly\, the United Nations pays a lot of attention to a worldwide responsible AI Strategy and here in Europe\, there is a commitment to a strategy based on a ‘human centric’ approach. The Netherlands is also attempting to place its own stamp on the use of AI through a sectoral approach and the formation of an AI research ecosystem. With the AINED initiative\, the Netherlands has already taken the first steps that are now being built upon. \nYet many questions remain; how can the opportunities offered by AI be used optimally worldwide to tackle social issues\, if at the same time outcomes of the cultural\, social and political impact of artificial technologies are still hotly contested? Is the answer at the national level\, should governments and corporates guarantee social norms\, values and human rights\, both in terms of policy and in the application of AI? Do we need to think differently about fundamental rights such as “equal treatment” in the Digital Age? What do cultural or interpretational differences in terms such as ‘transparency’ and ‘interpretability’ mean when AI makes decisions about the legislation that applies to citizens\, such as whether or not to grant benefits via an algorithm? Does the use of data lead to new forms of discrimination or may it exacerbate (unintentional) cultural and social inequalities? \nThese questions only scratch the surface\, we hope to address a whole range of diverse questions with you on 11 April. \nThe programme for the day:\n14.30: Registration \n15.00: Welcome by ECP + the Municipality of The Hague \n15.15: Speech Human Rights ambassador – Marriët Schuurman \n15.30: Speech Judith Alkema – Wageningen University & Research (she has carried out research on behalf of the UN) \n15.45: Speech Arjan El Fassed – Google \n16.00: Speech NGO \n16.15: Debate \n17.00: Drinks & Bites \n  \nRegister here
