SUMMARY:Community Drinks: Imagining Climate Resilience
DESCRIPTION:What if your next game-changing connection is just a drink away? \nJoin us for a special edition of The Community Drinks in partnership with The Climate Justice Community during The Hague Climate Week to wind down around a glass\, make new connections\, and get inspired by the panel conversation of the evening. For this edition we are leaving our usual home at The Hague Humanity Hub for a new location at EnergieKas\, a rooftop greenhouse that is the perfect setting to get away from your busy schedule and enjoy after-hours with purposeful conversations. \nWhat can you expect? \nJoin the Community Drinks on “Imagining Climate Resilience” from 17:00 to 19:00 for an evening of conversation\, reflection\, and connection around a word that is everywhere in climate work yet rarely means the same thing twice: resilience. \nResilience is used by almost everyone\, but its meaning shifts depending on who is speaking. Does it mean bouncing back to how things were\, or transforming the systems that made people vulnerable in the first place? And crucially: resilience of what\, to what\, and for whom? The way we answer shapes whose needs get prioritised\, who carries the burden of adapting\, and who is held responsible. \nWe will explore questions such as: \nWhat do we actually mean when we talk about climate resilience\, and whose definition counts?\nIs resilience about recovering from shocks\, or about changing the conditions that create vulnerability in the first place?\nAnd finally\, how can organisations make sure local knowledge and lived experience genuinely shape what resilience looks like in practice?\nThrough a panel of spotlight speakers from different corners of the ecosystem and an open discussion\, the evening will create space to exchange experiences\, challenge assumptions\, and think critically about a concept we too often take for granted. \nWho are the speakers? \nThe speakers for this edition will be announced shortly before the event. We are bringing together two complementary perspectives from across the peace and justice ecosystem\, exploring the relationship between voice\, power\, storytelling\, representation\, and visibility. \nRather than approaching the topic from a single discipline\, the conversation will connect experiences from different parts of the ecosystem and invite participants to reflect on how the decisions we make about who we listen to\, whose stories we share\, and what we choose to highlight are shaped and can shape what the international community ultimately understands and acts upon. \nWho is it for? \nIf you are interested in connecting with people and their work towards a more peaceful\, just and sustainable world\, this event is for you. Whatever your role or sector\, join Community Drinks to relax\, exchange perspectives\, and connect with this vibrant community committed to making the world more peaceful\, just and sustainable\, one conversation at a time. \nDate: Thursday\, the 5th of November\nTime: 17:00–19:00\nLocation: EnergieKas\, Helena van Doeverenplantsoen 3\, 2512 ZB Den Haag \nCome meet fellow professionals\, exchange perspectives\, and explore how technology and humanity can evolve together. \nWe look forward to welcoming you. \nPrivacy Policy \nThe Humanity Hub collects your name\, email\, and organization (if you have one) when you sign up for events\, so they can manage the event and tell you about future ones. SUMMARY:Fiscal Decentralisation and Local Finance Course
DESCRIPTION:Key information \n\nCourse Date: (Face-to-face)26 October – 6 November 2026\nLocation:The Hague\, Netherlands\nFee:€3\,995\n\nIntroduction\nHow a country organises its finances shapes how local authorities govern their cities\, towns\, and villages. Fiscal decentralisation gives local governments greater authority to decide how and where to allocate resources\, enabling them to better respond to citizens’ needs. \nFor decentralisation to succeed\, national governments must establish clear fiscal arrangements to support local service delivery\, while local authorities must strengthen their financial capacities and optimise resource use. \nThis course explores key aspects of fiscal decentralisation\, including expenditure responsibilities\, intergovernmental transfers\, and local revenue sources. Embedded in the broader context of decentralisation\, the training also highlights the importance of political decentralisation. \nThe programme combines theoretical insights with global best practices\, facilitating group discussions and learning from study visits to the Ministry of Interior\, Provincial Government\, and The Hague municipality. Tailored to participants’ needs\, sessions cover topics such as corruption\, participatory budgeting\, local taxation\, and financial accountability principles. \nKey Information\nThis course is designed for professionals working on (fiscal) decentralisation processes\, public sector reform programmes\, public service delivery or public financial management. Participants come from national\, regional and local governments as well as from donor and development organisations. \nParticularly relevant for professionals working in ministries of finance\, municipal budgeting and revenue units\, audit offices\, public financial management departments\, development banks\, and fiscal policy advisory bodies. \n	Apply now

SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night - Climate Justice Week: The Here Now Project
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special edition of Just Peace Movie Night\, taking place as part of The Hague Climate Week\, from 2–8 November 2026. As part of this city-wide programme around climate and sustainability\, we invite you to an evening of film\, reflection and conversation on climate change\, climate justice and meaningful local action. \nExperience climate change through the eyes and cameras of the people living through it. The Here Now Project brings together extraordinary first-hand footage of climate extremes from communities around the world. Without narration or traditional interviews\, the film puts lived experience at the centre and confronts audiences with the immediate and interconnected reality of climate change. \nAbout the film – The Here Now Project \nThe Here Now Project tells the story of a year of climate extremes through footage captured by ordinary people experiencing these events themselves. Rather than relying on journalists\, experts or filmmakers to interpret what is happening\, the film places the cameras in the hands of the people living through these events. \nWithout traditional narration or interviews\, the film creates an immediate and personal perspective on climate change\, bringing together experiences from communities around the world. The footage reveals how climate extremes affect people’s everyday lives\, while highlighting the interconnected nature of a global crisis. \nFollowing the screening\, a moderated conversation will explore how we document and tell stories about climate impacts\, whose perspectives are centred\, and the ethical responsibilities involved in using personal footage of people experiencing disaster and loss. \nThe conversation will then turn towards action: how can the urgency and emotions generated by stories like these become meaningful engagement rather than helplessness? Local changemakers and initiatives from The Hague will share concrete examples of what climate action can look like at community level\, connecting the global experiences shown in the film to people and initiatives taking action here. \nConversation themes \nLived experience and storytelling – What changes when climate events are documented by the people experiencing them rather than interpreted by journalists\, experts or filmmakers?\nEthics of documentation – Who owns these images and stories? How should highly personal footage be contextualised\, and what responsibilities arise when people are injured\, displaced or die? How can we avoid turning suffering into spectacle?\nFrom urgency to agency – Stories of climate impacts can leave us feeling overwhelmed\, but they can also inspire action. What meaningful action is possible locally\, and what examples from The Hague show that communities can make a difference? \n  \nProgramme \n18:30 – 19:00 – Doors open / arrival \n19:00 – 19:10 – Welcome and introduction \n19:10 – 20:30 – Screening: The Here Now Project \n20:30 – 21:00 – Post-screening conversation: lived experience\, storytelling and climate justice \n21:00 – 21:15 – Audience Q&A\, closing reflections and possible call to action \n21:15 – 22:00 – Networking drinks \nTickets: –\nLocation: De Energiekas – Helena van Doeverenplantsoen 3\nDate & Time: 06 November 2026 | 18:30 – 22:00 \nAbout Just Peace Movie Nights \nJust Peace Movie Nights is an event series organised by The Hague Humanity Hub in collaboration with partner organisations from The Hague’s peace and justice ecosystem. It brings themes of peace and justice to life for a broad audience\, creating space to reflect on important issues together through storytelling and cinema. \nAbout the organisers \nThe Hague Humanity Hub is a not for profit foundation based in The Hague\, the international city of peace and justice and home to hundreds of organisations working towards a better word. SUMMARY:Film screening and discussion: Earth’s Greatest Enemy
DESCRIPTION:9 November 2026\, 17:15-20:30 \nLeiden University\, Wijnhaven 2.01 \nTrufmarkt 99\, The Hague \nFree entrance\, no registration \n  \nThe climate crisis is increasingly being framed as a security matter\, a factor that fuels conflicts and necessitates military expansion. But what are the consequences of militarization for the environment and the climate crisis itself? \n“Earth’s Greatest Enemy” (2025) addresses a blind spot in mainstream environmental awareness by highlighting the scale of ecological destruction and human suffering caused by militarism. With its devastating account of the U.S. military’s contribution to climate collapse\, ecocide\, and the poisoning of the planet\, this thought-provoking film urges us to view militarized ecologies as a structural feature of the American empire and capitalist exploitation. At a time of increasing militarization in Europe and around the world\, the film also exposes the lack of accountability for crimes of ecocide. \nDirector Abby Martin is a journalist and activist from the United States. She is co-director of the documentary “99%: The Occupy Wall Street Collaborative Film” (2013) and director of the documentary “Gaza Fights for Freedom” (2019). \nExtended trailer here.

SUMMARY:Who Pays the Price? Regional perspectives
DESCRIPTION:This event is part 2 of a 3-part Studium Generale program series organised between Leiden University and the Humanity Hub. On three Wednesday evenings we bring together academics and practitioners\, and delve into the world of critical raw materials. \nWhat are the global effects of the extraction of critical raw materials on regions world wide? \nIn this second session in the series on critical raw materials\, we look at how the run on critical raw materials affects regional and local communities. Together with Jeleel Balyaminu\, MSc and Dr. Soledad Valdivia Rivera we draw parallels between Latin-America and Africa. We explore what the global demand for critical raw materials means for communities and how it creates new geopolitical power structures. What is the role China plays? And how do we look at possible human right violations involved. \nJeleel Balyaminu is currently doing a PhD at the African Studies Centre Leiden. His research is on Natural Resource Governance and Socio-Cultural Conditions in Africa: From Policy to Practice. \nSoledad Valivia Rivera is Assistant Professor at the Institute for History at the Department of Latin America Studies. She focusses among others on the state and social movement relations in Bolivia. \nAfterwards there is time for drinks and a networking reception. \nMore speakers will be announced soon. \n🗓 Wednesday 11 November\n🕠17:30 – 19:00\n📍The Humanity Hub\, Fluwelen Burgwal 58\, Den Haag \nAttendence is free\, but please sign-up in advance. \n	Register This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:#DemocracyDrinks x The Hague Justice Week -The Effects of a Shifting International Order
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nA discussion on The Effects of a Shifting International Order during the official networking event of The Hague Justice Week! \nWhat does peace and justice through law mean in the context of a shifting international order? \nJoin us for the official networking event of The Hague Justice Week 2026\, organised by the The Hague Humanity Hub\, the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD)\, and the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC). \nEighty years after the foundations of the international legal order were laid\, that order is shifting beneath us. What does the promise of peace and justice through law mean when the institutions built to protect it are under pressure? And what does that look like for someone living with the consequences\, sometimes far from the conference rooms where decisions are made? \n#DemocracyDrinks is the networking event of The Hague Justice Week\, bringing together representatives from the international ecosystem of courts\, tribunals\, organisations\, knowledge institutions\, and changemakers working every day to advance peace and justice. Join us for an evening that connects the big geopolitical picture to everyday lives\, with people who have made it their mission to defend democracy on the world stage. \nWe are excited to share that we have an incredible line up planned for you. For this edition we will be joined by: \nJudge Nicholas Guillou\, International Criminal Court\nAmbassador Hugh Adsett\, Ambassador of Canada to the Netherlands.\nCelia d’Almeida\, NIMD Mali Country Director\, Feminist and Human Rights Defender.\nThe event will be moderated by NIMD Executive Director Tijmen Rooseboom. \nAfter hearing from our speakers\, we hope you will stay for drinks\, good conversation\, and lasting connections. \n📅 19 November\, 2026 \n📍 Amare\, Spinoza Foyer (1st floor)\, The Hague \nProgramme: \n16:45 — Doors open \n17:15 — Welcome and introduction \n17:20 — Facilitated conversation \n18:00 — Open discussion \n18:30 — Informal networking \n19:30 — Close \nWe are proud to be part of The Hague Justice Week 2026\, taking place from 16-20 November under the theme “80 Years and Beyond: Renewing the Promise of Peace and Justice through Law.” \nSecure your spot for #DemocracyDrinks\, the networking event of this year’s Hague Justice Week!. \nWhat are the #DemocracyDrinks? \n#DemocracyDrinks is an informal\, recurring conversation and networking series bringing together people working on democracy\, peace\, justice\, and democratic participation. \nThe format is intentionally simple: open\, dialogue-led conversations in a relaxed setting. #DemocracyDrinks The Hague provides space to connect across sectors\, test ideas\, explore emerging questions\, and reflect collectively on democratic challenges beyond formal panels or presentations. \nLaunched by Defend Democracy in Brussels in 2018\, #DemocracyDrinks now takes place in cities around the world. Editions in The Hague have brought together a diverse mix of practitioners from NGOs\, international institutions\, think tanks\, government\, and civil society. The Hague series is co-organised by the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC)\, the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD)\, and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH). \nInterested in hosting your own edition? SUMMARY:Sustain your Energy. Sustain your Impact. Part I
DESCRIPTION:Part 1 – Sustaining yourself. How do we stay engaged in work that matters without continuously drawing from our own reserves?\nWorking for positive change can be deeply meaningful. It can also be demanding. Complex problems\, slow progress\, competing priorities and the gap between what we care about and what we can actually influence can take their toll over time. \nIn this interactive two-hour workshop\, we start with ourselves: What sustains our energy – and what quietly drains it? \nThrough short inputs\, reflection\, practical exercises and exchange with others\, we’ll explore how our energy is shaped not only by workload\, but also by uncertainty\, emotional demands\, values\, boundaries and our sense of agency. \nWhat you’ll take away \nYou’ll leave with: \n\na clearer picture of what sustains and drains your energy;\ngreater awareness of your own patterns\, boundaries and sources of resilience;\npractical ways to work with your energy more intentionally;\none or two practices or experiments to take into your everyday life and work.\n\nWho is this for? \nFor people working towards positive change – including peace and justice\, climate and sustainability\, humanitarian action\, international cooperation and social impact. \nYou don’t need to be exhausted or close to burnout to join. This workshop is as much about prevention and awareness as responding to existing strain. \nPart of a two-workshop series \nThis is Part 1 of Sustain your Energy. Sustain your Impact. Each workshop can be attended independently\, but we recommend joining both for the full journey. \nPart 2 – Sustaining ourselves within systems widens the lens from our individual experience to the teams\, organisations and wider systems we work within. \nOffered in collaboration with The Hague Humanity Hub and Stroomversnellers\, with support from Stichting DOEN. \n  \nPrivacy Policy\nThe Humanity Hub collects your name\, email\, and organization (if you have one) when you sign up for events\, so they can manage the event and tell you about future ones. SUMMARY:[Short course] Climate litigation and regulation - International and European perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a training on climate litigation and regulation – one of the fastest-moving areas of the legal landscape today. This two-day course gives you a practical\, up-to-date understanding of that landscape – from international foundations to European regulation – so you can navigate it with confidence. \nIn recent years\, courts at every level – from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) to national judiciaries – have fundamentally reshaped the legal obligations of governments and businesses on climate change. Civil society is also leveraging the law in many creative ways to hold public and private actors accountable. \nClimate litigation cases are growing both in number and success rate. Therefore\, understanding the content and application of international and regional climate law is becoming essential across sectors and roles. \nIn collaboration with SEVEN — the University of Amsterdam’s interdisciplinary climate institute\, we offer a short course providing a broad understanding of key areas in international and European climate law. \nDuring this course\, you will benefit from: \n\nAn informed understanding of international and European climate law\, including the latest developments of climate treaties and agreements.\nOverview of recent\, key climate litigation cases against states and corporations and their relevance for national and international climate policy.\nPractical and academic insights on the role of human rights in the pursuit of action on climate change.\nForward-looking reflection and interactive discussion on international and European climate law.\nOpportunities to engage with one another and the speakers through group work and case studies relevant to your own work.\n\nWho can attend?\nWe designed this programme for people who need practical answers\, not just abstract theory. The training applies to you whether you have a legal background or not. You will benefit from this course if you are: \n\nCivil servants and local policymakers: Learn how to audit your municipal decisions so you can protect your community and comply with human rights requirements.\nCorporate counsel and business staff: Understand what the new European regulations mean for supply chains and corporate policies\, so you know where to start before the deadlines hit.\nNGOs and strategic litigators: Connect with other advocates and refine your legal strategies based on the latest court victories and setbacks.\nAcademics and diplomats: Deepen your understanding of how international climate law evolves in real-time.\n\n  \nThe programme\nDay one focuses on the international stage\, covering the UN climate regime\, the ICJ Advisory Opinion on climate change\, climate obligations under international human rights law\, and strategic climate litigation. \nDay two zooms in on climate law in Europe\, looking at the European Climate Law and relevant regulations\, the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the Klimaseniorinnen case\, the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and climate obligations for corporations\, and the Energy Charter Treaty. \nInterested?\nRegistration for this course is now open. SUMMARY:Share this event Sustain your Energy. Sustain your Impact. Part II
DESCRIPTION:Part 2 – Sustaining ourselves within systems. What changes when we stop looking only at ourselves and widen the lens?\nWe don’t work in isolation. Our energy\, motivation and ability to contribute are shaped by the teams\, organisations and wider systems we are part of. \nIn this interactive two-hour workshop\, we explore the conditions that help people stay engaged and effective – and those that make meaningful work unnecessarily difficult or draining. \nThrough short inputs\, reflection\, practical exercises and exchange with others\, we’ll look at themes such as team culture\, psychological safety\, workload and expectations\, belonging\, organisational support and influence. We’ll explore what we can change ourselves\, what we might influence together\, and what requires change at a more systemic level. \nWhat you’ll take away \nYou’ll leave with: \n\na better understanding of how your environment affects energy\, motivation and impact;\ninsight into conditions that support or undermine sustainable engagement;\na clearer view of where responsibility and influence sit;\nideas for changes and conversations you can take into your own context.\n\nWho is this for? \nFor people working towards positive change – including peace and justice\, climate and sustainability\, humanitarian action\, international cooperation and social impact. \nCome if you’re curious not only about how you can sustain your engagement\, but also how we can create environments that make sustained engagement more possible. \nPart of a two-workshop series \nThis is Part 2 of Sustain your Energy. Sustain your Impact. It can be attended as a standalone workshop – you do not need to have attended Part 1. \nFor the full journey\, we recommend joining both workshops. \nPart 1 – Sustaining yourself focuses on your own energy\, patterns\, boundaries and agency before Part 2 widens the perspective to our shared environments and systems. \nOffered in collaboration with The Hague Humanity Hub and Stroomversnellers\, with support from Stichting DOEN. \nPrivacy Policy\nThe Humanity Hub collects your name\, email\, and organization (if you have one) when you sign up for events\, so they can manage the event and tell you about future ones. SUMMARY:[CLEER conference] The European Union as a sanctioning actor: Legal and institutional developments
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the joint CLEER – MINOS conference that aims to take stock of the EU’s evolving sanctioning practice and to answer some of the most pressing conceptual\, normative and practical legal questions concerning this practice. \nOver the past decades\, the European Union (EU) has become one of the most active sanctioning actors. EU sanctions (restrictive measures) have expanded significantly in scope\, frequency\, and ambition. At this moment\, there are over 40 different EU sanctioning regimes in force. Some of them implement UN Security Council resolutions or expand them with stricter and additional measures. The EU also has a long history of imposing autonomous sanctions\, a trend that has been reinforced following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. \nThis increasing reliance on sanctions has been accompanied by important legal and institutional developments. Judicial scrutiny by the Court of Justice of the European Union\, evolving roles for the EU’s institutions and new anti-circumvention measures have all reshaped the EU sanctions practice. Continued tensions exist between the adoption of sanctions as part of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and other areas of EU law. Tackling sanctions of circumvention and ensuring the uniform and effective implementation of restrictive measures\, in full respect of fundamental rights and freedoms\, remains high on the agenda. \nThis event is co-organised by The Centre for the Law of EU External Relations (CLEER)\, the T.M.C. Asser Instituut\, and the Multidisciplinary International Network on Sanctions (MINOS) operating at Ghent University.
