SUMMARY:People Centred Justice as a Early Warning and Prevention Tool
DESCRIPTION:How can justice kickstart real prevention and make a difference together? Join us for this interactive conversation on 6th May!\nAcross the world\, tensions and conflicts often begin with everyday problems that go unanswered—issues like disputes over land\, housing\, family matters\, access to services\, or discrimination. When these problems accumulate\, they can erode trust and deepen social divides long before any violence becomes visible. \nThis interactive session explores how people‑centred justice—justice that is accessible\, fair\, and grounded in people’s daily realities—can help identify and address these early warning signs. By resolving everyday grievances early\, justice systems can help prevent tensions from escalating and strengthen community resilience. \nAlthough the examples will draw from conflict‑affected places such as the DRC\, Ethiopia\, and Nigeria\, the discussion will also highlight why these lessons matter in more stable societies\, including the Netherlands\, where signs of mistrust\, inequality\, and polarisation are increasingly visible. \n📅 Date: 6 May 2026\n🕘 Time: 09:00–10:30\n📍 Venue: The Hague Humanity Hub\n🧃 Doors open at 08:30 for welcome breakfast \nWhy Attend?\nJoin practitioners\, policymakers\, students\, and the wider public for a conversation that asks: \n\nWhat everyday justice problems signal rising tensions?\nWhat kinds of justice responses actually help prevent escalation?\nHow can community-level and formal justice actors work together more effectively?\nWhat can the Netherlands learn from fragile contexts—and what can it offer in return?\n\nMeet the Speakers \n\nClaudine Tsongo – Dynamique des femmes juristes (DRC)\n\nHow unresolved everyday grievances in eastern DRC contribute to wider conflict—and what community‑level justice can do to prevent escalation.\n\n\nMoncef Kartas – Head of UNDP’s Peace Support Facility (Ethiopia)\n\nHow patterns in everyday disputes can serve as early warning signals in places where formal justice systems have collapsed\, and what effective prevention efforts look like in practice.\n\n\n\nMore information about the speakers to be shared soon. \nWho Should Join?\nThis session is open to all: \n\nJustice\, development\, and peacebuilding practitioners\nPolicymakers and diplomats\nStudents and researchers\nAnyone interested in justice\, prevention\, or social cohesion\n\nThis event is a partnership between The Hague Humanity Hub\, UNDP\, Cordaid and the Civil Society Platform for Peacebuilding and Statebuilding (CSPPS) and is one of the official side events of the Justice Matters Conference by the Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (Hiil) taking place from the 6th – 8th May 2026. \n	Register here for in-person attendance\n	\n	Register here to attend online

SUMMARY:War on Terror: Legacy\, Justice\, Art: Conference
DESCRIPTION:This conference brings together scholars\, practitioners\, journalists\, and artists to examine the enduring legacy of the “war on terror” and its implications for the future. Nearly twenty-five years after its inception\, the War on Terror continues to shape global politics\, law\, and society . The discussion will explore both continuities and transformations in this legacy\, including patterns of militarisation\, dehumanisation\, legal exceptionalism\, and shifting forms of intervention. \nLooking ahead\, the event also considers how international law\, media\, and the arts can respond to these challenges. It creates space for dialogue on the role of artistic expression in advancing justice—particularly in contexts where legal remedies remain limited or contested. \nSet against ongoing global tensions and debates around accountability\, human rights\, and the rule of law\, the conference invites participants to reflect on key questions: What are the strengths and limits of legal frameworks in addressing contemporary conflicts? How do evolving narratives of security shape international law? And what role can creative and media practices play alongside legal efforts in promoting justice? \nThe programme will be followed by the launch of the exhibition Art/Justice by Abu Zubaydah\, presenting works by the Guantánamo detainee and offering a powerful artistic perspective on detention\, accountability\, and the pursuit of justice. \n	Register here

SUMMARY:What Does Peace Mean To You? – a Panel Discussion and Interactive Workshop of Youth Perspectives on Peace
DESCRIPTION:What does peace mean to young people today? How is it experienced\, imagined\, challenged\, or redefined across different contexts and lived realities? \nThis interactive event brings together students\, academics\, and members of The Hague’s NGO community to explore youth perspectives on peace through open dialogue and collective reflection. The aim is to create a space where young people can express their understanding of peace in their own words\, while fostering meaningful exchange between youth and practitioners working in peacebuilding and related fields. \nThe programme will begin with a short mind-mapping exercise\, inviting participants to reflect on their personal associations with peace. This will be followed by a panel discussion featuring young speakers from diverse backgrounds\, including individuals with lived experience of conflict and displacement. After the panel\, participants will join smaller group discussions to share reflections\, exchange perspectives\, and engage more deeply with the themes raised throughout the evening. \nThe event will conclude with a final reflection activity\, where participants will revisit the question “What does peace mean to you?” and consider how their understanding may have evolved through dialogue and shared experiences. Insights gathered during the event will later be shared with organisations across The Hague’s NGO community to support more meaningful youth engagement in peacebuilding work. \nSpeakers: \n\nAlla Khuseyn is a Climate and Energy Law master’s student at the University of Groningen and the founder of ROK Magazine\, a Kurdish digital magazine. She is expected to share her perspectives and experiences relating to peace\, resistance\, and culture within the diaspora.\nGregory Fonseca is a Master of Public International Law student at Leiden University. He may speak about his experiences joining the Ukrainian military\, as well as teaching international law to soldiers.\nAhmed Idriss is a Master student at Rotterdam University\, and the co-founder of SudanConnect. He may be sharing his experiences related to the war in Sudan\, and humanitarian efforts.\n\n	Sign up here! This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Workshop: Mapping Incidents for Accountability
DESCRIPTION:Workshop: Introduction to Incident Mapping for Accountability Work \nJoin us for this online workshop\, where we’ll walk through the practical basics of incident mapping for accountability work. We’ll start with the essentials: what kinds of data and information you need\, how to organize it clearly\, and why verification matters. From there\, we’ll look at visual mapping techniques and strategic scoping\, including how to identify relevant parties\, prioritize incidents\, choose the right timeframes\, and focus on broader conflict zones or specific sites of interest. We’ll also explore real-world examples in Google Earth to show how these methods come together in practice. \nBy the end of the session\, you’ll have a solid foundation for turning scattered information into a clearer picture that can support accountability and advocacy efforts. Please note that this session will be recorded. \nInstructor: Jenna Dolecek \nJenna works with OSINT for Ukraine in the International Crimes Investigation Group (ICIG) and is also an Open Source Investigation and Geospatial Analysis Expert with Justice Rapid Response. The film exposes the trauma of displacement and decades of persecution faced by the Rohingya people in Myanmar. Told through the eyes of children\, it sheds light on the lived experiences of refugees by blending harsh reality with elements of fantasy\, drawing attention to a humanitarian crisis that is too often overlooked. \nAbout the film – Lost Land \nIn the hope of reuniting with their scattered family\, four-year-old Shafi and his nine-year-old sister Somira leave a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh and embark on a perilous journey to Malaysia. Featuring more than two hundred Rohingya participants\, the film offers a powerful and immersive portrayal of their collective experience. \nLost Land was nominated for the Grand Jury Fiction Award at the Movies that Matter Festival 2026. \nThe movie screening will be followed by a moderated panel discussion in collaboration with KUNO. SUMMARY:#DemocracyDrinks: Far-Right Networks: Diffusion and Democratic Impact
DESCRIPTION:A closer look at far-right networks\, focusing on the case study of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in India.\nHow do far-right networks embed themselves in cultural\, educational\, and political institutions? How do they translate grassroots presence into electoral power and ideological influence? And what explains their resilience across very different political contexts? \nThis event will examine the organizational strategies that enable far-right movements to build legitimacy\, extend their reach across society\, and sustain long-term mobilization. \nTo explore these questions\, the event will showcase the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in India as a central case study. As one of the world’s largest and most enduring far-right organizations\, the RSS offers a particularly revealing lens onto the mechanics of far-right mobilization: \n\nIts century-long historical development\nIts layered ecosystem of affiliated organizations\nIts decisive influence on contemporary Indian politics.\n\nYet the RSS is not an outlier. Its strategies resonate with\, and in some cases prefigure\, patterns visible in far-right movements across Europe\, the Americas\, and beyond\, from the cultivation of civil society fronts to the fusion of nationalism\, majoritarian identity\, and disinformation. \nMeet the speaker! \nSruti Bala is an Associate Professor in Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Her research interests revolve around the intersections of culture\, performance\, and politics. Dr.Bala published studies on a wide range of topics including nonviolent protest\, artistic activism\, feminist and postcolonial/decolonial theories. She is a member of the collective International Solidarity for Academic Freedom in India (InSAF India)\, which advocates for collective academic freedoms and building global solidarities with Indian and international peoples’ movements for radical social\, economic and ecological justice. \nTogether we will reflect on what these networks mean for democracy\, pluralism\, and civil society today\, and how their growing visibility is reshaping political landscapes worldwide. \n	Register now

SUMMARY:Book event | The Economic Diplomacy of Peace in the Middle East: Paris Protocols to the Oslo Accords
DESCRIPTION:Dr Libby Lahar\, Visiting Fellow and PhD alumna at the International Institute of Social Studies\, joins a panel of distinguished experts to examine Europe’s role in shaping the political future and economic viability of Palestine. The discussion draws on her new book\, The Economic Diplomacy of Peace in the Middle East: Paris Protocol to the Oslo Accords. \nMore than two and a half years after the outbreak of the Gaza war\, and despite a ceasefire\, Gaza remains engulfed in an unprecedented humanitarian crisis while violence and displacement in the West Bank continue to escalate. Meanwhile\, the stalled US-Iran conflict and the easing of US sanctions on Russia are redrawing the geopolitical map of the Middle East — raising pressing questions about where Europe stands and what role it can play in Palestine’s future. \nThe panel will explore how economic diplomacy\, bilateral trade\, and political incentives have shaped the peace process — from the Oslo Accords to the 2020 Abraham Accords and the negotiations unfolding today. Lahar’s book offers a lens through which to understand both the promise of Oslo and the forces that ultimately derailed it. \nSpeakers \n\nJan Pronk — Former Minister of International Development Cooperation of the Netherlands during the Oslo Peace Process\nRobert Serry — Former United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process\nRajaa Natour — Investigative journalist and political analyst (Middle East & Europe)\nLibby Lahar — ISS Guest Researcher and moderator
