SUMMARY:The Trouble with Aid: Movie Afternoon
DESCRIPTION:During this movie afternoon\, we will watch the documentary ‘The trouble with aid‘. \n\n\n\nThe documentary film The Trouble with aid travels through the history of modern humanitarianism\, starting in the Biafran war in the late 1970s to move on to Ethiopia\, Rwanda\, Afghanistan\, and others. It shows some of the core dilemma’s humanitarians face\, and how these were dealt with in these different episodes\, some of which turned out to be game changers afterwards\, for policy\, norms and practices in humanitarian aid. The film gives a critical impression of a humanitarian sector where idealism frequently clashes with the everyday politics of crisis and disaster\, and its consequences. \n\n\n\nAfter the movie we will discuss the film to see how these complexities shape today’s humanitarian world and its dilemma’s and im/possibilities. Bram Jansen will lead the discussion. Bram is an anthropologist with the Sociology of Development and Change group (SDC) at Wageningen University. His teaching and research focuses on refugee- and humanitarian studies. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\n16:00 Short introduction and drinks \n\n\n\n16:15 Start movie \n\n\n\n17:15 Pizza break \n\n\n\n18:30 End movie\, short discussion \n\n\n\n19:00 Wrap up \n\n\n\nYou can sign up for this event by sending an email to:kuno@kuno-platform.nl \n\n\n\nLimited places available!

DESCRIPTION:Movies that Matter and Asser are pleased to present the Global Justice Cinema workshop on the 13-14 April 2022. \n\n\n\nBackgroundDocumentary film is a very powerful medium in the field of global justice. It can document human rights violations\, uncover abuses of power\, communicate a strong message of solidarity and call for action. SUMMARY:peace&justice café: What's the Role of the Private Sector? (In-Person/Online)
DESCRIPTION:This link opens in a new tab\n\n\n\nJoin us on April 14 as we highlight the role the private sector can\, should\, and does play in driving a more peaceful and just world. When it comes to the most critical issues of our time like climate change\, inequity\, poverty\, social justice\, or the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, companies are increasingly being faced with calls to respond in a world that seems to be shifting beneath us by the day. At the next peace&justice café\, professionals of The Hague’s public\, private\, and non-profit sectors will explore how the private sector chooses to respond to these calls and how NGOs\, governments\, and international organisations can shape this expanded role that they are carving out.  \n\n\n\nAt this edition of the peace&justice café\, network with organisations and businesses with experience of this new corporate adaptation to a more expectant public\, and (re)connect on common goals.  \n\n\n\nIf you would like to share your experiences\, or have a great suggestion of another organization or a business for us\, please contact programming@humanityhub.net This link opens in a new tab! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re excited to welcome the following speakers to the next edition of the peace&justice café on April 14:\n\n\n\nJohn Marks\, Founder of Search for Common Ground and Confluence International: Roundabout host and Keynote panel participant\, In-PersonBrittany Sage Brown from The Kraft Heinz Company – Keynote panel participant\, In-PersonMaddalena Neglia from FIDH (International Federation for Human Rights) – Roundabout host\, VirtualPiotr Drozd from Leaders for Climate Action – Roundabout host\, VirtualJoanna van der Merwe and Manuel Ignacio Galdames Castillo from the Centre for Innovation Leiden University: Roundabout co-hosts\, In-PersonIvana Ninčić from International Mediation Institute: Roundabout host\, VirtualAlexander Gunkel from Space4Good: Roundabout host\, VirtualAlexander Bertram from ActivityInfo and Claire Barnhoorn from Solvoz: Roundabout co-hosts\, In-PersonNoor Lekkerkerker from Upinion: Roundabout host\, In-PersonKatja Marianne Noordam from FairChange: Roundabout host\, In-Person\n\n\n\nThe event will also be moderated by Connor Sattely. SUMMARY:Expert meeting on Business and Human Rights Arbitration
DESCRIPTION:Since their launch in 2019 at the Peace Palace the Hague Rules on Business and Human Rights Arbitration (Hague Rules) have been acknowledged as a possible valuable contribution to the Remedy Pilar of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and served already as model for a range of sectoral business and human rights arbitration rules.  \n\n\n\nOn 12 April 2022\, the Asser Institute will host an expert meeting on business and human rights arbitration convened with the support of the Working Group on the Hague Rules (WG). \n\n\n\nThe main objective of the meeting is to bring together a wide range of key stakeholders to discuss the potential of arbitration in business and human rights disputes in a variety of constellations such as ad hoc direct business-rightsholder issues or in a contractual relations context\, the way in which such arbitration would need to be structured in terms of process and institutions\, as well as the mechanisms that would incentivize both corporations and rightsholders to have recourse to it.  \n\n\n\nThe meeting will be divided in three sessions. In the first\, the WG will provide a brief introduction to the background\, drafting process and salient aspects of the Hague Rules on Business and Human Rights Arbitration. In the second session\, a diverse set of invited speakers will share short reflections on the advantages and drawbacks of arbitration in the BHR context. In the final round-table\, the discussion will be focused on the implementation of the Hague Rules\, starting with a presentation from the WG members on the main achievements and challenges so far. It will be followed by an exchange of views with the invited participants on the future potential of the Hague Rules and their limits. \n\n\n\nAgenda of the meeting \n\n\n\n13:00 – Opening and introductions13:15 – The Hague Rules\, background\, drafting process and salient issues (Prof. Martijn Scheltema\, Prof. Jan Eijsbouts)13.45 – Round-table 1 – Business and Human Rights Arbitration: Pros and Cons15.15  Coffee Break15:45 – Round-table 2 – Towards the implementation of the Hague Rules: Opportunities and Challenges\n\n\n\nIf you wish to join the meeting\, please send an email to Dr. Antoine Duval (a.duval@asser.nl) explaining your motivation. SUMMARY:Symposium on ‘War\, Trauma and Art’
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with our exhibition ‘Art after Auschwitz’\, featuring the work of Boris Lurie and Wolf Vostell\, and the launch of the accompanying publication ‘Boris Lurie and Wolf Vostell | Art after the Shoah’ Kunstmuseum Den Haag is to host a symposium on ‘War\, Trauma and Art’ on Tuesday 26 April. The keynote speakers will be art historian Eckhart Gillen and author Arnon Grunberg. From the late 1950s onwards artists Boris Lurie and Wolf Vostell confronted their audiences with the horrors of the Shoah (the Hebrew word for the Holocaust)\, at a time when many people found it too difficult to talk about the war. Their view that art was not about beauty\, but about showing grim reality\, was entirely at odds with the spirit of the time. The war in Ukraine has made the question of how society should deal with atrocities\, war crimes and victims even more relevant. Every day we see countless pictures of the terrible situation there\, and yet daily life seems to go on as normal.  At the symposium art historians Eckhart Gillen and Daniel Koep will discuss the work of Boris Lurie and Wolf Vostell and their impact on the art world after the Second World War. We will also draw parallels with today’s world\, discussing with contemporary artists\, writers and academics the visualisation of war crimes\, trauma and injustice\, with reference to their own work and to the recent situation in Eastern Europe.

SUMMARY:Cartoon Exhibition: Just Speak!
DESCRIPTION:Justice for all can only be reached if we have the freedom to express ourselves in fair and peaceful communities that leave no one behind. A focus on justice is necessary in solving all conflicts. Images have the power to carry a message in a clever\, funny and informing way\, which is exactly what this exposition is about. Ideas about peace and justice from the youngest generation turned into professional cartoons\, created by human rights cartoonists from around the world. \n\n\n\nFrom Monday the 2nd of May until Thursday the 19th of May\, the Atrium in the City Hall hosts the exposition ‘Just speak!’ by The Next Movement. In its essence lies the voice of youth across the world. By means of a competition\, students across both The Hague and the world were asked about their ideas on how to achieve justice in a conflict in their part of the world. What are their thoughts on how to prevent or peacefully resolve this issue? Using their creativity to shape these ideas in the form of a cartoon\, their drawings were shared with the professional cartoonist network from The Next Movement. They chose the best\, most inspiring ideas and turned them into editorial cartoons. \n\n\n\nHague Justice Week \n\n\n\n This exposition is part of the Hague Justice Week 2022\, which takes place from the 30th of May until the 3rd of June. Global peace and justice require global collaboration. During The Hague Justice Week\, actors of all levels come together\, interact and try to find answers to global challenges through the scope of justice. \n\n\n\nVisit the ‘Just speak!’ exposition to see the voice of youth across the world! SUMMARY:Europe in the world: The emergence of Collective Power Europe?
DESCRIPTION:The seventh Annual T.M.C. Asser Lecture will be held by  Emerita Professor Brigid Laffan\, an internationally recognised expert on the European Union. The title of her lecture is: ‘Europe in the world: The emergence of Collective Power Europe?’. During the 7th Annual T.M.C. Asser Lecture\, Brigid Laffan will analyse the challenges facing Europe in a world of geopolitical shift and shock: \n\n\n\nOn the 24th of February 2022\, the post-war international order ended\, as did the 1989 peace dividend. A major nuclear power Russia\, invaded its neighbour Ukraine\, targeting civilians\, reducing urban centres to a rubble and triggering a major displacement of people in Europe. For the European Union (EU) and the wider community of democracies\, this is a critical juncture with implications for the security and political economy architecture of Europe and the wider world for decades to come. The Russian invasion takes place against the return of hard geopolitics\, Great Power competition and the weakening of multilateral institutions. Over the last decade\, the EU\, a polity but not a state\, has been grappling with its response to new dynamics in global politics. Europe’s search for a role has focused on ill-defined concepts such as strategic autonomy and European sovereignty. The collective EU wants to be a player\, not a plaything but is challenged by the imbalance between its economic power\, diverging preferences of the member states and an inchoate approach to security which relies on NATO and the Transatlantic Alliance. The focus of this lecture is threefold. First\, it explores the response of the EU and the community of democracies to Putin’s war. Second\, it analyses the impact on global politics and Great Power competition and three\, assesses the consequences of the war for the dynamic of European integration and the nature of the EU. \n\n\n\nThis year’s T.M.C. Asser Annual Lecture will take place in the Academy Hall of the Peace Palace\, The Hague\, the Netherlands on Tuesday\, 10 May 20‌22 from 16‌.00 – 17‌.30 hrs CET\, followed by a reception. Registration opens at 15‌.15 hrs CET. \n\n\n\nSeats for the live event will be assigned on a first-come\, first-served basis\, so we kindly ask you to secure your seat in the Peace Palace now. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to watch the Lecture online\, please register here to receive a hyperlink prior to the event.

SUMMARY:(Online) Sustainable Procurement: Key to Greening Humanitarian Responses
DESCRIPTION:A healthy environment is inherently linked to the safety\, security and well-being of refugees\, internally displaced persons\, host communities and societies. In the last decade\, UN agencies\, INGOs and NGOs have started to mainstream environmental sustainability into their strategies\, projects and programs\, and operations; all in line with the environment-related commitments of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). \n\n\n\nMost refugees and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps have no access to the electricity grid or energy sources other than biomass. In order to meet the energy needs of the camp population\, humanitarian agencies have been supplying off-grid products such as solar lanterns\, solar street lights and solar home systems. Whilst development objectives aim to be considered in humanitarian response (to support the humanitarian-development-peace nexus approach)\, often\, the humanitarian funding cycle is shorter than the life-cycle of procured products\, and once devices such as solar products have been distributed\, they are often left to the end user to dispose of. Given that many products aren’t designed to be repaired\, this can create a risk to human health(e.g. leaking batteries) and the environment (e.g. contamination of groundwater\, soil and air with carcinogenic compounds) (ESDS\, 2021; PACE &E-waste Coalition\, 2019; UNICEF\, 2020)\, thereby negatively impacting long-term development goals. The unregulated discard of e-waste is among thefastest-growing waste streams in camps and camp-like settings. \n\n\n\nBackground of partnership\n\n\n\nInnovation Norway and IOM are committed to supporting the clean energy transition within humanitarian settings\, to enable greening humanitarian responses (SDG7 & SDG12). The humanitarian sector’s vision of the clean energy transition is articulated through the sector-wide initiative\, the Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Energy in Displacement Settings.  Further\, at the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit IOM committed to the United Nations New Ways of Working and Grand Bargain\, both of which focus on enhanced engagement between humanitarian and development actors. Developing initiatives to green our humanitarian response to deliver on these commitments is crucial moving forward. \n\n\n\nInnovation Norway\, the International Organization for Migration(IOM) and Solvoz have partnered in 2021 to open up the expertise and technical capacity of various stakeholders within the humanitarian sector (private\, academia\, international organizations\, NGOs\, global associations) to address the growing e-waste streams from humanitarian operations through sustainable procurement. \n\n\n\nSustainable procurement\n\n\n\nSustainable procurement will take into account selecting the right products\, and also service aspects (e.g. repair\, recycling) to minimise waste\, extend the lifecycle of products\, and to reduce any final downstream effects of waste disposal from any product to be procured. In summary\, the partnership recognises that greening humanitarian responses start at both technical selections of items as well as procurement decisions including service contracts. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, we are providing detailed technical guidance on products and services\, enabling local service providers to more easily engage with the wider humanitarian sector\, green their procurement\, as well as strengthen the localization of humanitarian procurement.  \n\n\n\nOur approach to sustainable procurement for solar products will be presented during the session\, which is envisaged to be extended beyond solar products in future\, to encompass the energy sector and other electronic devices.  \n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\nClaire Barnhoorn – CEO of SolvozYumiko Abe-Soulier – Circularity and Waste Management expert Solvoz and InterActaGemma Arthurson – Global WASH Support Team of International Office of Migration\, IOM GenevaTherese Marie Uppstrøm Pankratov – Senior advisor\, The Humanitarian Innovation Programme\, Innovation Norway

SUMMARY:HagueTalks event: What about the future of warfare?
DESCRIPTION:The wars of today are often seen as different to those half a century ago. Large battles have given to insurgiences\, and technology has allowed operations to be executed at the push of a button. \n\n\n\nFor civilians\, however\, much remains the same. Caught in the middle\, it is often these innocents who suffer the most. At the same time\, we may be seeing ways in which civilians themselves are reshaping the battlefield\, whether it be to resist oppression or to avoid atrocities. \n\n\n\nIn the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, #HagueTalks presents a discussion on the role of civilians in times of war. Are they inherently a complication to any conflict? Can they be a help to defenders\, or are they doomed to suffer? Or has warfare really changed that much at all? \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nABOUT SPEAKERS \n\n\n\nJan Tijmen Ninck Blok is a humanitarian legal advisor and will talk about how resistant are the rules of international humanitarian law in the future. Jan is Red Cross adviser on international humanitarian law and fundamental principles. \n\n\n\nLotje Boswinkel is a Strategic Analyst at HCSS. Prior to joining\, she worked as a trainee at the European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS)\, focusing on the Middle East and the future of war. \n\n\n\nRuslana Koropetska is from Ukrainine. She focuses on the topics of misinformation and propaganda during war and how international exhibitions on comics help fight such misinformation. \n\n\n\nEvent moderator is Connor Sattely\, who believes that to solve the global challenges what we need is a special type of crazy person. These people have one foot in technology and one foot in systemic change\, with the savvy to navigate that divide. SUMMARY:Stop Putin: Q&A w/ Bill Browder on effective sanctioning in the Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:On March 31\, 2022\, in an unprecedented address to the Dutch parliament Ukrainian president Zelensky thanked the Dutch for leading the effort in support of Ukraine. And yet in the parliamentary debate that followed\, it became apparent that one of the main instruments at our disposal to help the Ukrainians and stop Putin – sanctions – seems to have been grossly unutilized by the Dutch government. In the meantime steps have been taken and some assets have been frozen\, but the question is: is it enough? And what can we learn from this case to stop war\, gross human rights violations and corruption at the source? \n\n\n\nThe NHC would like to invite you to a public debate on the role of the Netherlands in preventing support to war\, human rights violations and corruption\, in the form of a Q&A with Bill Browder\, founder and CEO of Hermitage Capital Management\, and leader of Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign. Browder’s Hermitage Capital Management was the largest foreign investor in Russia until 2005\, when he was denied entry to the country and declared “a threat to national security” for exposing corruption in Russian state-owned companies. \n\n\n\nIn 2008\, Mr. Browder’s lawyer\, Sergei Magnitsky\, uncovered a massive fraud committed by Russian government officials that involved the theft of US $230 million of state taxes. Sergei testified against state officials involved in this fraud and was subsequently arrested\, imprisoned without trial and systematically tortured. He spent a year in prison under horrific detention conditions\, was repeatedly denied medical treatment\, and was killed in prison on November 16\, 2009\, leaving behind a wife and two children. \n\n\n\nSince then\, Mr. Browder has been leading the Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign which seeks to impose targeted visa bans and the freezing of assets of corrupt officials. Bill Browder just published a new book “Freezing Order: A True Story of Russian Money Laundering\, State-Sponsored Murder\, and Surviving Vladimir Putin’s Wrath” \n\n\n\nJoin us on 12 May for a Q&A with Bill Browder on the topic of effective sanctioning and learn more about how to stop supporting individuals and regimes that are involved in human rights violations and corruption. The session will be moderated by Kirsten Meijer\, the Executive Director of the Netherlands Helsinki Committee\, with Sangeeta Goswami (Policy Advocacy Adviser and Communications Manager Human Security Collective) as responder.

SUMMARY:P2P Facilitation: Facilitating Uncomfortable Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Register This link opens in a new tab\n\n\n\n\nThe Humanity Hub is pleased to bring together its members in regular peer-to-peer (P2P) groups\, centered around the theme of facilitation. These are informal opportunities to find one other\, foster collaboration\, and share knowledge and ideas among those working on common goals. \n\n\n\n— \n\n\n\nThis month’s group will be facilitated by Kelly Buis and Matt Barnaby\, from ImpactBasis\, looking at the challenging topic of ‘facilitating uncomfortable conversations’. \n\n\n\nDo you ever admire someone for making a courageous decision? Good news – everyone can train their courage muscle! One of the steps in doing so is to engage in difficult and uncomfortable conversations\, even if avoiding them seems a way more attractive choice.  \n\n\n\nFor us as facilitators this brings up the question: What is the best way to guide these conversations? In this P2P we will explore alternative structures to facilitate meetings and conversations\, called liberating structures. Advocates argue that liberating structures lead to more innovation\, inclusion\, participation\, clarity\, purpose and fun. \n\n\n\nWe have all experienced managed discussions\, open discussions and brainstorms. Are these the right tools to do so? In this P2P we will explore alternative structures to facilitate meetings and conversations: liberating structures. We are looking forward to exploring together!
