SUMMARY:Book event | The New Global Possible: Rebuilding optimism in the age of climate crisis
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with Ani Dasgupta\, President and CEO of the World Resources Institute\, as he presents his new book The New Global Possible: Rebuilding Optimism in the Age of Climate Crisis. \nThe conversation will examine why a new economy — one that works for people\, nature\, and the climate — is not only necessary but achievable\, even in a world marked by instability and uncertainty. Drawing on his book\, Dasgupta will shed light on the clean economic transition already taking shape around the globe\, and what it takes to steer that change in the right direction. \nHis central argument: the question is no longer whether the transition will happen\, but how. The presentation will be followed by an open discussion on harnessing innovation\, dismantling entrenched power structures\, and building a cleaner\, more resilient economy. \nProgramme \n\n16:30–16:35 — Welcome and opening\n16:35–17:00 — Fireside chat with Ani Dasgupta\, hosted by Dr Oane Visser\n17:00–17:30 — Audience Q&A\n17:30–18:30 — Networking reception

SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night x KUNO: Lost Land
DESCRIPTION:Just Peace Movie Night x KUNO: Lost Land \nJoin us for a powerful evening organised by KUNO and The Hague Humanity Hub\, part of the Just Peace Movie Nights series. \nOn 26 May\, we will screen Lost Land (Harà Watan)\, a gripping fictional feature by Japanese director Akio Fujimoto. The film exposes the trauma of displacement and decades of persecution faced by the Rohingya people in Myanmar. Told through the eyes of children\, it sheds light on the lived experiences of refugees by blending harsh reality with elements of fantasy\, drawing attention to a humanitarian crisis that is too often overlooked. \nAbout the film – Lost Land \nIn the hope of reuniting with their scattered family\, four-year-old Shafi and his nine-year-old sister Somira leave a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh and embark on a perilous journey to Malaysia. Along the way\, the children encounter natural forces\, exploitation through cross-border trafficking\, and constant challenges that test their resilience. \nLost Land is the first feature made entirely in the Rohingya language and is shot at the eye-level of its young protagonists. Featuring more than two hundred Rohingya participants\, the film offers a powerful and immersive portrayal of their collective experience. \nLost Land was nominated for the Grand Jury Fiction Award at the Movies that Matter Festival 2026. \nThe movie screening will be followed by a moderated panel discussion in collaboration with KUNO. We will announce the speakers soon! \nProgramme \n\n18:15 – 18:45 – Walk-in & drinks\n18:45 – 20:45 – Introduction and film screening: Lost Land\n20:45 – 21:30 – Moderated discussion and Q&A\n\nThis evening invites you to watch\, reflect\, and engage in dialogue on border violence\, human rights and belonging. \n\nTickets: €5\,50 – The ticket price includes a free drink.\nLocation: The Hague Humanity Hub\nDate & Time: 26 May 2026 | 18:15 – 21:30\n\nAbout Just Peace Movie Nights \nJust Peace Movie Nights is an event series organised by The Hague Humanity Hub in collaboration with partner organisations from The Hague’s peace and justice ecosystem. SUMMARY:#DemocracyDrinks: Far-Right Networks: Diffusion and Democratic Impact
DESCRIPTION:A closer look at far-right networks\, focusing on the case study of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in India.\nHow do far-right networks embed themselves in cultural\, educational\, and political institutions? How do they translate grassroots presence into electoral power and ideological influence? And what explains their resilience across very different political contexts? \nThis event will examine the organizational strategies that enable far-right movements to build legitimacy\, extend their reach across society\, and sustain long-term mobilization. \nTo explore these questions\, the event will showcase the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in India as a central case study. As one of the world’s largest and most enduring far-right organizations\, the RSS offers a particularly revealing lens onto the mechanics of far-right mobilization: \n\nIts century-long historical development\nIts layered ecosystem of affiliated organizations\nIts decisive influence on contemporary Indian politics.\n\nYet the RSS is not an outlier. Its strategies resonate with\, and in some cases prefigure\, patterns visible in far-right movements across Europe\, the Americas\, and beyond\, from the cultivation of civil society fronts to the fusion of nationalism\, majoritarian identity\, and disinformation. \nMeet the speaker! \nSruti Bala is an Associate Professor in Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Her research interests revolve around the intersections of culture\, performance\, and politics. Dr.Bala published studies on a wide range of topics including nonviolent protest\, artistic activism\, feminist and postcolonial/decolonial theories. She is a member of the collective International Solidarity for Academic Freedom in India (InSAF India)\, which advocates for collective academic freedoms and building global solidarities with Indian and international peoples’ movements for radical social\, economic and ecological justice. \nTogether we will reflect on what these networks mean for democracy\, pluralism\, and civil society today\, and how their growing visibility is reshaping political landscapes worldwide. \n	Register now

SUMMARY:Book event | The Economic Diplomacy of Peace in the Middle East: Paris Protocols to the Oslo Accords
DESCRIPTION:Dr Libby Lahar\, Visiting Fellow and PhD alumna at the International Institute of Social Studies\, joins a panel of distinguished experts to examine Europe’s role in shaping the political future and economic viability of Palestine. The discussion draws on her new book\, The Economic Diplomacy of Peace in the Middle East: Paris Protocol to the Oslo Accords. \nMore than two and a half years after the outbreak of the Gaza war\, and despite a ceasefire\, Gaza remains engulfed in an unprecedented humanitarian crisis while violence and displacement in the West Bank continue to escalate. Meanwhile\, the stalled US-Iran conflict and the easing of US sanctions on Russia are redrawing the geopolitical map of the Middle East — raising pressing questions about where Europe stands and what role it can play in Palestine’s future. \nThe panel will explore how economic diplomacy\, bilateral trade\, and political incentives have shaped the peace process — from the Oslo Accords to the 2020 Abraham Accords and the negotiations unfolding today. Lahar’s book offers a lens through which to understand both the promise of Oslo and the forces that ultimately derailed it. \nSpeakers \n\nJan Pronk — Former Minister of International Development Cooperation of the Netherlands during the Oslo Peace Process\nRobert Serry — Former United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process\nRajaa Natour — Investigative journalist and political analyst (Middle East & Europe)\nLibby Lahar — ISS Guest Researcher and moderator

SUMMARY:Heat Action Day 2026 Den Haag:
DESCRIPTION:Op 2 juni\, tijdens Heat Action Day\, organiseren de Gemeente Den Haag\, The Hague University of Applied Sciences en Leiden University op de Spui Campus een kennisdeling over hitte in de stad.

SUMMARY:Fireside Peace Chats: Youth Protests in Kenya with Wangechi Grace Kahuria
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an informal conversation with Wangechi Grace Kahuria on defending the human rights of youth movements in Kenya.\nIn this edition of the Fireside Peace Chats (FPC) series\, we welcome Wangechi Grace Kahuria\, a Kenyan civil rights activist and the Executive Director of IMLU\, a Health\, Governance and Human Rights Organisation involved in forensic documentation\, litigation\, medical and psychosocial rehabilitation of survivors of torture\, and monitoring the government’s adherence to its human rights commitments. Wangechi is currently participating in the Shelter City initiative\, a global movement for the protection of human rights defenders initiated by Justice & Peace. \nIn 2024\, young people were at the forefront of a wave of massive demonstrations against rising tax bills in Kenya. Kenyan authorities reacted with a brutal clampdown and have since continued to intimidate\, harass\, abduct and torture peaceful protestors\, members of human rights organisations and other government critics. Drawing from her work at IMLU and her attendance at several UN sessions in Geneva\, Wangechi will reflect on her experience with supporting youth activists in Kenya\, the challenges she faces in her field\, and pathways to justice for victims of severe human rights abuses. \nCome ready to listen\, reflect\, and exchange insights on accountability\, justice\, and the protection of youth political participation in the face of democratic decline. \nWhat are the Fireside Peace Chats? \nThe Fireside Peace Chats aim to create a space where practice\, research\, and policy in the field of peacebuilding come together in an informal way through the experiences of people on the ground. By sharing personal stories from peacebuilders and other figures with extensive experience in conflict areas\, we want to contribute to a locally informed paradigm shift in liberal peacebuilding. \nThe Fireside Peace Chats originally emerged as a joint initiative of Leiden University College (LUC)\, the Knowledge Platform Security and Rule of Law (KPSRL)\, and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH). \n	Register now!

SUMMARY:[Benjamin Ferencz lecture] Ecocide: Criminalising serious harm against the environment
DESCRIPTION:On 8 March 2026\, Iran’s Vice President and head of the Department of Environment\, Shina Ansari\, describedstrikes on Tehran’s oil depots as “ecocide”. Increasingly\, the term is being used to describe serious harm against the environment. More importantly\, efforts are being made around the world to criminalise ecocide\, at both the national and international level. For example\, on 9 September 2024\, Vanuatu introduced a proposal co-sponsored by Fiji and Samoa to amend the Rome Statute of the ICC to include an independent crime of ecocide. \nThis Benjamin Ferencz lecture\, organised in cooperation with the International Humanitarian and Criminal Law Platform\, T.M.C. Asser Press and the Sustainable Global Economic Law research project at the University of Amsterdam\, celebrates The Hague launch of a timely new book on the topic\, entitled Ecocide: Criminalising Serious Harm against the Environment. \nThe book explores the concept of ecocide and critically assesses how the criminalisation of serious harm against the environment fits within international criminal law broadly construed. To this end\, the book’s chapters address four key questions: what constitutes ecocide\, how can it be prosecuted\, where should it be prosecuted\, and who are its perpetrators and victims? \nAfter a presentation by the editors\, the lecture will feature responses by an academic\, Dr. Daniel Bertram\, a practitioner\, Barbara van Straaten\, and a campaigner\, Lammert van Raan. \nThe evening will be closed with a network reception. \nInformation about the organising strand:\nIn the public interest: accountability of the state and the prosecution of crimes \nThis research strand examines the accountability of states\, both individually and collectively (e.g.\, the United Nations or the European Union)\, in light of public interest standards in the context of counter-terrorism. DESCRIPTION:Design for Values Impact Day – Digital autonomy \nOn 9 June\, the Delft Design for Values Institute of TU Delft hosts a workshop on Digital Autonomy for policymakers\, municipalities\, civil society and companies at Spui Campus in The Hague\, in collaboration with TU Delft | Campus The Hague. What exactly do we mean by digital autonomy? And what can organizations\, such as municipalities\, universities and companies\, do to advance digital autonomy? SUMMARY:Follow-Up Meet-Up: Collective Action For Sudan
DESCRIPTION:Let’s come together to discuss and implement collective action pathways that can make a real difference for Sudan’s future.\nFollowing our April gathering at The Hague Humanity Hub\, we would like to invite you to a second meet-up to continue the conversation on collective action for Sudan.\nThe previous session brought together participants from humanitarian\, policy\, research\, cultural\, and diaspora spaces to reflect on current gaps in international engagement and identify practical areas for collaboration. \nA number of shared priorities emerged\, particularly around youth support\, local capacity building\, civilian protection\, and the need for more coordinated engagement between actors in the Netherlands and grassroots initiatives in Sudan. \nThis follow-up session on 9 June will focus on moving from reflection toward implementation. \nIn particular\, we aim to: \n\nfurther develop 1–2 concrete collective action pathways identified during the previous meeting\,\nexplore realistic pilot initiatives that can be supported from the Netherlands\,\nstrengthen connections between ongoing initiatives\,\nand discuss how spaces such as Sudan Futures Platform\, The Hague Humanity Hub\, and others can continue supporting constructive collaboration around Sudan.\n\nAt the same time\, we remain open to additional ideas\, priorities\, and emerging areas for collaboration that participants may wish to bring into the conversation. \nThis space is intended to complement — not duplicate — the important humanitarian and emergency response efforts already taking place. The discussion will focus particularly on medium-term actions and forms of collaboration that can strengthen longer-term resilience\, civilian support\, capacity building\, and future preparedness around Sudan. \nThe conversation will remain informal\, participatory\, and non-partisan\, while maintaining a practical focus on what can realistically be advanced together. \nAbout the Organizers\nThis meet‑up is organized by The Hague Humanity Hub in partnership with the Sudan Futures Platform as part of our ongoing commitment to support key ecosystem actors and bring crucial conversations to the forefront. \n	Register This link opens in a new tab
