SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch x Samuel Hall
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that over 32 million new displacements due to natural disasters were recorded in 2022 alone (IDMC). Samuel Hall has been studying the phenomena of mobility and displacement since its inception in 2010 and it is clear that the consequences of climate change are felt more severely by some than others. So who can be the actors of change for driving climate mobility solutions? \n\n\n\nOur conversations with communities across Africa and South & Central Asia and the Greater Caribbean confirm that dialogues are often more constructive at the local level. Grassroots movements\, activists\, migrants and displaced people themselves have shown what real action can be. Our research across various contexts has also shown that women\, who are often on the frontlines of climate change\, have a higher level of awareness about adaptive measures to climate risk and environmental degradation. \n\n\n\nTheir inclusion and meaningful leadership in climate adaptation and mitigation efforts can be integral to addressing inequalities and contributing to resilient communities. In addition\, supporting communities’ decision-making can help strengthen levels of preparedness and response within areas impacted by climate change or environmental stress. \n\n\n\nHow do we do this? \n\n\n\nSamuel Hall’s collaborative research with partners such as UNDP\, UNEP\, IOM\, and GCCMI explores the impact of climate change on displaced communities. Their work also documents the stories and perspectives of those affected to shape relevant policies and programmes. \n\n\n\nWhat can you expect? \n\n\n\nJoin us on 01st of May 2024 at 12h for a Brown Bag Lunch with Nikki Stoumen to share reflections on: \n\n\n\n\nCommunity Perspectives on Climate Change in Afghanistan\n\n\n\nThe Role of Women in The Climate Mobility Agenda in Kenya and Somalia\n\n\n\nClimate Mobility Dynamics and Community Adaptations in the Greater Caribbean region (Colombia\, Costa Rica\, Suriname\, Antigua & Barbuda\, Bahamas and Jamaica)\n\n\n\n\nDon’t forget to bring your lunch! \n\n\n\nHow can you attend? \n\n\n\nThere are two ways to attend: \n\n\n\n\nHub Members may join physically or remote.\n\n\n\nOther professionals in the ecosystem of peace and justice may only join remotely.\n\n\n\n\nRemote participants will receive a Zoom link two days prior to the session. \n\n\n\nFor further inquiries and to sign up\, please contact programming@humanityhub.net \n\n\n\nSamuel Hall is a social enterprise that conducts research\, evaluates programmes\, and designs policies in contexts of migration and displacement. Our research connects the voices of communities to changemakers for more inclusive societies. With offices in Afghanistan\, Germany\, Kenya\, and Tunisia and a presence in Somalia\, Ethiopia\, and the United Arab Emirates\, we are based in the regions we study. SUMMARY:Asser Institute: Improving supply chain accountability for arms exports
DESCRIPTION:According to Amnesty International\, 44 percent of homicides globally were carried out with a gun\, with easy access to guns being among the driving reasons behind this concerning statistic. The roundtable will include policymakers from the United States\, the European Union\, and Guatemala. The three panel sessions will feature experts\, policymakers and CSO representatives. SUMMARY:Knowledge Management Fund Research Report Launch
DESCRIPTION:The role of victims and of victim-witnesses in national and international accountability mechanisms for atrocity crimes has progressively gained ground over the past two decades. This development increased the need for a better understanding of the potential psychological impact of the work of these mechanisms on survivors/victims and witnesses. It also triggered a heightened interest in how mental health and psychosocial (MHPSS) approaches can improve witness evidence and victim well-being and\, ultimately\, improve justice outcomes. However\, notwithstanding the increased focus on victim-centred justice\, the use of MHPSS approaches and trauma-informed methodologies is still underdeveloped and only scarcely integrated in the work of most justice mechanisms.  \n\n\n\nThe Integration of mental health and psychosocial approaches in accountability mechanisms for atrocity crimes research project\, supported by the Knowledge Management Fund and the Knowledge Platform Security & Rule of Law\,  aimed to fill this gap by making good practices and know-how widely available to practitioners in the justice field through guidelines and by strengthening a community of practice around the topic. The key objective being that this project becomes a catalyst for further integration of mental health and psychosocial approaches in accountability mechanisms to make them truly victim and witness-centered.  \n\n\n\nTo mark the release of the research report\, a launch event co-organized by the lead researcher An Michels\, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and  the Knowledge Platform Security and Rule of Law will be held on May 16th\, 2024 at the Carlton Ambassador Hotel in The Hague This link opens in a new tab and online (for both\, registration is needed). The launch event will bring together stakeholders\, including legal experts\, MHPSS practitioners\, human rights advocates\, policymakers\, and representatives from affected communities\, to discuss strategies\, challenges\, and best practices in ensuring meaningful and coherent use of MHPSS approaches and trauma-informed methodologies in accountability-seeking processes.   \n\n\n\nClick the button below to learn more about the event and register. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLEARN MORE AND REGISTER This link opens in a new tab

Thousands of professionals in the city dedicate their careers to a more peaceful and just world. Climate change is strongly tied to both peace and justice\, for instance through the relation of climate change with drivers of conflict\, the global efforts for climate justice\, and the need for a just transition towards achieving net zero emissions. The Hague’s international recognition and visibility in this area is growing. Notably\, The Hague has taken significant steps in this direction with its Climate Agreement\, This link opens in a new tab by actively engaging various stakeholders including the international community in shaping its implementation.  \n\n\n\nThis Meet-up will explore linkages between climate\, peace and justice and identify key areas in which we can strengthen our collective efforts. We will demonstrate the potential of this community and we will leave energized and excited\, with a sense of ownership.   \n\n\n\nWho is this meet-up for:  \n\n\n\nProfessionals whose work is related to climate and/or peace and/or justice who are serious about achieving more impact and willing to share and collaborate with others. SUMMARY:ICCT Annual Conference 2024
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 May\, the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) organises the Annual Conference\, under the overarching theme: “Houston we have a problem”: Counter-Terrorism in the Age of Uncertainty. The Conference will take place at Beeld and Geluid in The Hague.  \n\n\n\nWithin the last years\, the world has witnessed increasingly diversifying patterns of extremism and terrorism. In order to develop durable counter-measures\, we ask which of these current trends and phenomena will stay or become even more relevant within the next electoral cycle. Painting scenarios of how these trends and phenomena will develop within the next few years can help to identify strategies to counter them while upholding the rule of law. By bringing together a mix of key CT and P/CVE practitioners\, policy-makers\, and international scholars\, we hope to explore these pressing developments in depth throughout the two-day conference. \n\n\n\nThe Introductory Remarks and the Plenary Sessions on Day 1 will be open to a public audience (both in-person and online) to encourage the conversation and address questions of public interest. The workshop sessions on day 2 are invitation only for a select group of researchers\, policy-makers\, and practitioners. They will take place behind closed doors\, under the Chatham House Rule. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLEARN MORE AND REGISTER This link opens in a new tab

DESCRIPTION:This event is hybrid and can be attended both in person and online. \n\n\n\nWhat to expect? \n\n\n\nThe “Likeminded: Networking\, Redefined” workshop\, in collaboration with Resilient Foundation and BeNode\, aims to inspire and guide change-makers and civil society actors in using their networks for good. SUMMARY:Democracy Drinks EU Election Sprint: The Role of Youth
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 28 for our #DemocracyDrinks. \n\n\n\nThe coming editions will be special as we start our sprint to the EU elections. In the lead-up to\, around\, and after June 6 at #DemocracyDrinks the Hague\, we will focus on all things Elections. \n\n\n\nFor our first edition of the #DemocracyDrinks elections sprint on May 28\, we focus on the role of youth in the lead-up to the European Union Elections in June. \n\n\n\nYouth make up 16.3% of the European Union and are an important deciding factor in the future of the EU’s political landscape. Regardless of these statistics\, current decisions are the decisions of the future. \n\n\n\nDespite an increase of 14% in young people’s turnout in the 2019 EU elections\, turnout remains low. At the same time\, we can see that young people are very active in the informal political spheres\, dominating political activism and civic engagement\, such as demonstrations or online engagement. \n\n\n\nHow can we translate the desire to participate towards higher voter turnout during the EU elections? How can we develop approaches that address the duality in participation? \n\n\n\nParticipation\, however\, goes beyond voter turnout and beyond just the elections. How can we ensure that young people are heard and have a voice during the EU elections and later in the EU Parliament? \n\n\n\nTo try to make light of these questions\, we have invited speakers who will offer their perspectives\, namely: \n\n\n\n\nLotte Prins\, Board member of the Nationale Jeugdraad (NJR)\n\n\n\nRoos Habets\, Young Politician and current candidate for the EU Elections for Volt.\n\n\n\nFemke Brouwer\, Parliament expert at the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) and current candidate for the EU Elections for GroenLinks-PvdA will moderate the conversation.\n\n\n\n\nWe hope you will join us for what promises to be an unmissable discussion! \n\n\n\nWhat are the Democracy Drinks? \n\n\n\n#DemocracyDrinks brings together democracy advocates\, thinkers and enthusiasts at our monthly informal networking events. It is a great way of making new contacts and catching up with people you know; for testing ideas and planning actions; for moral support and inspiration. Feel free to invite friends and colleagues that work on or are interested in defending values like democracy\, rule of law\, human rights… Come along and you will be made welcome! \n\n\n\nThis event series is a collaboration between the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC) and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) and The Hague Humanity Hub. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLEARN MORE AND REGISTER

SUMMARY:Blue Drinks - Water\, Energy\, Food Nexus
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 30 for the next edition of Blue Drinks. \n\n\n\nBlue Drinks is an informal networking series for water and environmental professionals. For this edition we are highlighting the Water-Energy-Food Nexus. \n\n\n\nThe WEF Nexus provides a holistic and integrated approach in order to secure access to water\, energy and food in the long term. It strives to put water\, energy and agricultural needs\, which are competing for the same scarce resources\, on an equal footing. It aims to balance interests in resource use\, manage conflicts and identify synergies without compromising human wellbeing and healthy ecosystems. It stems from the realisation that water\, energy\, agriculture\, and natural ecosystems exhibit strong interlinkages\, and that under a traditional sectoral approach\, attempting to achieve resource security independently often endangers sustainability and security in one or more of the other sectors. \n\n\n\nThe speakers will be announced shortly. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a night of guaranteed great networking!

SUMMARY:Asser Institute: The right to health for women in armed conflict - addressing international law's role in the humanitarian crisis in Gaza
DESCRIPTION:“Women in Gaza resort to using scraps of tent in place of period products” reads an introduction by ActionAid\, an international organization providing on-the-ground humanitarian aid amidst the crisis in Gaza. According to a UN Report updated in February 2024\, around 700\,000 menstruating women and girls in Gaza have limited access to hygiene supplies. This scarcity\, compounded by a lack of water has increased infections to an unprecedented rate. Only a fraction of these essential requirements can be fulfilled by The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). This dire situation calls for immediate attention and action.  \n\n\n\nThis lecture will explore States’ existing obligations under international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law (IHRL) in relation to the right to health in conflict\, specifically focusing on how these regimes intersect in the context of the conflict in Gaza. Our speakers will address pressing issues such as the lack of menstrual hygiene products and lack of sanitation and proper aid contributing to disease\, miscarriages\, and trauma. The lecture will also explore ways to enforce the international laws pertaining to Palestinian women’s health needs in the on-going crisis. \n\n\n\nConfirmed speakers: \n\n\n\n\nDr Fleur van Leeuwen\, Assistant Prof\, Bogaziçi University\, Dept. Political Science and International Relations\n\n\n\nYoumna El Sayed\, Egyptian-Palestinian journalist\, Gaza Strip correspondent for Al Jazeera English\n\n\n\nDr  This link opens in a new tabVaios Koutroulis This link opens in a new tab\, Professor\, Université libre de Bruxelles\, Centre for International Law\n\n\n\nModerator: Gabriela Radu\, Junior Researcher\, Asser Institute\n\n\n\n\nThe event is supported by the Royal Netherlands Society of International Law (KNVIR). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLEARN MORE AND SIGN UP
