SUMMARY:KUNO Roundtable: Localisation of humanitarian aid in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:KUNO is hosting a roundtable at Cordaid to discuss the status of the localization of humanitarian aid in Ukraine\, access to humanitarian financing\, and the quality of the partnerships between Ukrainian and international humanitarian actors. Why is it so difficult to cut the bureaucracy? How can local civil society actors be involved with setting the priorities? How can the system be changed in which international organisations are pressured to distribute aid quickly and reach as many people as possible\, even if this fails to meet Ukrainians’ real needs? And can we learn from examples where Ukrainian civil society organisations do have direct access to financing and where international and Ukrainian organisations complement each others work in the humanitarian response? \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore details and sign up information

SUMMARY:The London Story "how to stand up to an army: Meet HRD Babloo Loitongbam"
DESCRIPTION:On March 28\, 15:00\, join us at the Humanity Hub for a lecture and Q&A with Babloo Loitongbam\, a human rights defender from India. \n\n\n\nBabloo is the Director of Human Rights Alert and has been fighting to defend human rights in Manipur\, a conflict zone in the north east of India\, for 30 years now. He was also a Fulbright Scholar and is an Ashoka Life Fellow. \n\n\n\nBabloo has been fighting against the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act\, which has been repeatedly condemned by the United Nations. As the Act grants impunity to the army\, the conflict in Manipur costs the life of one civilian per 100\,000 a year. Babloo and his team have meticulously documented evidence of 1528 cases of extrajudicial killings of civilians by security forces\, and pushed India’s Supreme Court to appoint a fact-finding committee to investigate six of these cases. Without Babloo\, widows whose husbands have died through extrajudicial killings would not have received any compensation at all. \n\n\n\nBabloo is a fierce defender of human rights towards these armed forces\, and has withstood death threats. Babloo bases his methods on Gandhi’s form of nonviolent resistance and employs all legal means offered by the Indian State and international organisations. \n\n\n\nJoin us at the Hague Humanity Hub as Babloo speaks about the long fight against the Indian military\, and how not just human rights defenders\, but civilians are framed and targeted as terrorists. He will further speak on institutionalised state impunity\, and be available to answer your questions about human rights in India. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore information and sign up here

SUMMARY:T.M.C. Asser Institute Lecture:
DESCRIPTION:On April 20\, 2023\, Professor Fakhri will deliver the 8th Annual T.M.C. Asser Lecture in the Peace Palace in the Hague. The title of his lecture is: ‘The right to food\, violence\, and food systems’. To allow for a better understanding of how food systems operate and to reframe how the right to food is addressed in international law\, Michael Fakhri will examine forms of violence in food systems in his lecture. \n\n\n\nAbout the 8th Annual T.M.C. Asser Lecture\, Michael Fakhri writes: “Drawing on my work as Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food and my upcoming report to the Human Rights Council\, I will outline a way out. I will explain how systems not only produce food but also amplify and produce forms of violence that make people more poor\, vulnerable\, and marginalised. I also describe how food systems rely on a global economy of dependency and extractivism. In sum\, food systems are part of a cycle between structural inequality and systemic violence causing wide-spread human rights violations. I will address the war in Ukraine to highlight how international markets amplify rather than abate violence\, creating global shocks from a regional war.”   \n\n\n\nMr. Michael Fakhri\, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food since 2020\, is a professor at the University of Oregon School of Law where he teaches courses on human rights\, food law\, development\, and commercial law. He is also the director of the Food Resiliency Project. He investigates key environmental and policy issues relating to all stages of the food system\, including production\, transportation\, packaging and consumption. Mr. Fakhri has taught courses on the right to food at Harvard Law School\, European University Institute\, and the University of Arizona Indigenous Governance Program. He has lectured on international human rights and development topics at universities around the globe. Mr. Fakhri has further led public dialogues on human rights and development. During his practice as a lawyer\, Mr. Fakhri fought for the rights of people who were indigent and incarcerated in a psychiatric institution. He is the author the book ‘Sugar and the Making of International Trade Law’\, and co-author of ‘Bandung Global History and International Law: Critical Pasts and Pending Futures’ (co-edited with Vasuki Nesiah and Luis Eslava). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore information can be found here

SUMMARY:The Hague University of Applied Sciences: Presentation Clara Meijer-Wichmann Medal
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, the League for Human Rights awards the Clara Meijer-Wichmann Medal to a person or group that has made a special case for human rights in the Netherlands. Because human rights are not self-evident in the Netherlands either. The surcharge affair is an example of this. \n\n\n\nIn 2022\, the medal was awarded to Chermaine Leysner\, Renske Leijten and Pieter Omtzigt. Their enormous commitment to combating the violation of the fundamental rights of users of the childcare allowance was the reason for this. \n\n\n\nOn October 30\, 2022\, the medal was already awarded to Renske Leijten and Pieter Omtzigt (read the report here ). Sadly\, Chermaine Leysner\, as a representative of all parents fighting for their rights\, was prevented by illness at the time. On March 30\, we will put her in the spotlight and award her the medal during a second event. Renske Leijten and Pieter Omtzigt\, both members of the House of Representatives\, will also be present. \n\n\n\nThis event is a collaboration between the League for Human Rights\, Faith in Human Rights\, study association Trinitas and knowledge center Global and Inclusive Learning. \n\n\n\nThe award ceremony / programme is in Dutch\, but the discussion can be in English if audience members indicate so. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:Survivor-Centred Care Provision in Conflict Zones: Insights from Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Join us this Thursday (30 March) for a Knowledge Sharing session with Fedir (Freddy) Dunebabin\, Programme Manager in Ukraine with the Dr Denis Mukwege Foundation. Reflecting on his experiences in Ukraine\, Freddy will share challenges of coordinating and delivering care to survivors of sexual violence in an ongoing conflict and how humanitarian workers and other partners can support survivors better in the future. \n\n\n\nFreddy will share his experience in working with the Ukrainian survivors network: SEMA Ukraine\, and with the Ukrainian government\, to establish a clear path for survivors of sexual violence to access help\, while minimising risks of further harm. Without coordinated holistic referral pathways\, survivors of conflict-related sexual violence may be subjected to re-traumatisation by a variety of care providers\, including hospital staff and security forces\, who may ask them to repeat their stories of assault multiple times while referring them from one facility to another. The Mukwege Foundation team will share key elements necessary for ensuring survivor-centred holistic care for victims of conflict-related sexual violence\, based on their experiences in Ukraine and elsewhere. \n\n\n\nAbout Freddy Dunebabin and The Dr. Denis Mukwege Foundation \n\n\n\nFreddy Dunebabin is the Programme Manager in Ukraine at the Dr Denis Mukwege Foundation in Ukraine. The Dr. Denis Mukwege Foundation is committed to supporting Ukraine in implementing comprehensive survivor-centred holistic care\, in the current context and its team has extensive expertise in this field. \n\n\n\nThe Dr. Denis Mukwege Foundation is an international human rights organisation working together with survivors of conflict-related sexual violence from around the world. Drawing attention to the most shameful crimes committed during conflicts\, the Foundation envisions a world in which sexual violence as a weapon of war is no longer tolerated. Together with its special adviser\, the Congolese gynaecologist and women’s rights activist Dr Denis Mukwege\, the Foundation works for a future where survivors worldwide receive the holistic care they need and obtain reparations; where they have the freedom to speak out and organise globally to end wartime sexual violence. \n\n\n\nSign up is available here and via the button below. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this event is for members of the Humanity Hub only! SUMMARY:LUCIR Lecture: Inside Gang Governance: How and Why Gangs Rule the Streets of Rio de Janeiro
DESCRIPTION:Between violent coercion and responsive governance\n\n\n\nFor more than four decades\, drug trafficking gangs have monopolised violence in hundreds of favelas (informal neighbourhoods) across Rio de Janeiro and replaced state authority with governance forms of their own. Yet these relationships vary considerably across time and space. Some gangs have developed responsive relations with local populations by resolving disputes\, stimulating the local economy\, and providing various forms of recreation. In other favelas\, gangs have engaged in more coercive and violent behaviour while offering residents few benefits. What accounts for this variation? \n\n\n\nOn April 14 Nicholas Barnes will give a lecture on his research on gangs in Rio de Janerio. Barnes’ research focuses on political and criminal violence\, illicit markets\, public security\, and non-state governance in Latin America. His current book project\, ‘How Gangs Govern’ (under contract with Cambridge University Press) examines how drug trafficking gangs relate to favela communities in Rio de Janeiro. Barnes’ research has been funded by the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation\, the National Science Foundation\, the Social Science Research Council’s Drugs\, Security and Democracy in Latin America and the International Dissertation Research Fellowships as well as the Department of Education through the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn More Here

DESCRIPTION:Mediation awareness week introduces you to the art and science of mediation – a form of dispute resolution in which a neutral third person (a mediator) helps parties solve their disputes on their own. While there is a common misconception of mediation being solely a legal tool for lawyers\, here is why in fact mediation is for all of us: \n\n\n\nMediation has been used for centuries as a societal tool to help people live together peacefully and constructively. Mediation skills\, in turn\, are transferable skills that can help all of us build better relationships\, be it in our local neighborhoods\, among our informal networks (family and friends)\, and in our workplaces.  \n\n\n\nIn various workshops you will learn everyday professional mediation skills such as: \n\n\n\n\nActively listening and communicating for your voice to be heard\n\n\n\nThe art of networking\n\n\n\nManaging and learning from your emotions\n\n\n\nCombining different perspectives to common problems\n\n\n\nFinding your unique mediation style\n\n\n\n\nThis week of events will offer an opportunity to practice these skills in different contexts\, increasing the awareness and practical understanding of mediation. Everyone from both inside and outside of THUAS is welcome to attend\, with students receiving priority. \n\n\n\nMore information about Mediation Awareness Week and what is offered can be found below. \n\n\n\n\nMore Information

SUMMARY:peace&justice café: Towards Climate Equity
DESCRIPTION:“Climate Change is happening now\, and to all of us. No country or community is immune. And\, as is always the case\, the poor and vulnerable are the first to suffer and the worst hit.” – UN Secretary-General António Guterres \n\n\n\nThe climate crisis is already having huge effects within our world: from governmental changes to business shifts\, protests; conflicts\, and much more. During discussions about the need for immediate action\, it’s often said that humans are driving the climate towards a series of ‘tipping points’; irreversible and critical points of no return. \n\n\n\nIn the next edition of the peace&justice café\, The Hague community will explore the various ways that climate change is affecting lives across the globe\, and at the intersections of rapidly developing challenges – and what needs to be done to keep the crisis from escalating beyond these ‘tipping points’. For more information about our roundtables and speakers you can check the Humanity Hub Social Media accounts and soon our website. \n\n\n\nIf you would like to participate as a roundabout host\, or have a suggestion for a great organisation or keynote speaker you would like to see at this café\, please email us at programming@humanityhub.net. \n\n\n\nThe event starts at 16:00\, doors will be open at 15:30 \n\n\n\n\nSign up here!

SUMMARY:T.M.C Asser Annual Lecture: 'The Right to Food\, Violence\, and Food Systems' by Michael Fakhri
DESCRIPTION:“One of the main causes of hunger and famine is violence and armed conflict. In turn\, armed conflict leads to more food insecurity. SUMMARY:Asser InstituteWorkshop: Critical Reflections on AI Ethics Principles and Societal Inputs for the Governance of Military AI
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, ‘AI ethics principles’ have emerged as an instrument for the governance of military applications of artificial intelligence (AI). These documents can be developed by groups of experts and policy makers\, or through experimentation or consultation with the general public or relevant stakeholders. Each initiative proposes a list of ‘principles’\, values\, guidelines or descriptions of best practices that can be action guiding and promote responsible design\, development and use of military AI. While these initiatives provide frameworks against which decisions and practices of individuals\, institutions and states can be assessed\, their normative role is unclear\, and they remain legally non-binding.   \n\n\n\nWhat is the place and utility of AI ethics principles in juxtaposition to existing legal and other normative frameworks? What roles can or should the general public or relevant stakeholders play in the creation of these lists of principles? What are the social and cultural implications of creating ‘lists’ to promote responsible behaviour? And what conceptual and practical issues should be considered in the development of AI principles?

SUMMARY:Jobtech Alliance Webinar: Introducing the New Jobtech Quality of Work Measurement Tool
DESCRIPTION:The rise of digital labour platforms has significant potential to create new work opportunities for youth\, but it also comes with risks. Questions remain about what a ‘good’ job really means in the jobtech space. To-date\, measurement has focused mainly on the practices and policies of the platforms themselves. While important\, the reality is that people are engaged across multiple platforms\, and the outcomes they experience depend on their personal circumstances\, and labour market needs. So what are the most important criteria for understanding users’ dignity\, pay and satisfaction across the digitally-enabled work they do? Building on a collaboration called the Jobtech Learning Lab\, the International Labour Organization’s Systems Change Initiative\, the Challenge Fund for Youth Employment (CFYE)\, and the Jobtech Alliance have developed and piloted a tool for assessing job quality outcomes associated with jobtech platforms in Africa from the perspective of users. This webinar will present the tool and the initial findings from piloting with three platforms. \n\n\n\nSign up here or via the button below! \n\n\n\n\nMore information and Signup

SUMMARY:Hague Talks: Achieving The SDGs: Mission Impossible or Yes We Can?
DESCRIPTION:We are at the halfway point of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals This link opens in a new tab (SDGs) set in 2015 by all 193 members of the United Nations. Will we reach them by 2030\, or will we fail to organize ourselves to generate the impact required? In a context full of mutually reinforcing crises (conflicts\, pandemic\, climate change…)\, are the SDGs a mission impossible? Or are there sparks of hope that mean we can still achieve these Global Goals? And if so\, what is required from each and all of us? What power and ideas do young people have for the future? And what motivates our speakers to pursue a career in global development\, despite the huge challenges? \n\n\n\nThis event is part of a visit Achim Steiner (UNDP Administrator) to The Hague. He will speak with young people\, civil society\, parliament and government to discuss how the Netherlands and UNDP can together generate lasting impact for a more just and sustainable world. \n\n\n\nAchim Steiner and Kitty van der Heijden (Director-General\, Dutch MFA) will also share their personal drives and share what they believe are the challenges and reasons for optimism. They will challenge the audience to think about what role each of us can play\, regardless of age or background. Of course\, they also look forward to being challenged by you! \n\n\n\nEvent is co-organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs This link opens in a new tab\, the United Nations Development Programme This link opens in a new tab (UNDP) and Leiden University – Campus The Hague This link opens in a new tab\, the Auditorium. SUMMARY:Reparations: Lessons from the Past\, Challenges for the Future
DESCRIPTION:On 11 May\, this multidisciplinary event on reparations will bring together practitioners\, scholars\, and students\, in the year that marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Rome Statute (1998)\, which led to the creation of the International Criminal Court and the Trust Fund for Victims. \n\n\n\nParticipants will be invited to reflect about how reparations have changed in the course of the twentieth and twenty-first century\, and how they will continue to be shaped by diplomatic\, legal and academic consideration\, State and individual responsibility\, and victim agency.  \n\n\n\nReparations\n\n\n\nToday\, we almost take it as a given that survivors of severe forms of violence deserve some kind of reparation. The imperative to repair is an important principle in international law – one sanctioned by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 60/147 calling for “adequate\, effective and prompt reparation” in the wake of mass atrocities. \n\n\n\nBut the understanding that victims of mass human rights abuses deserve some form of reparation is a relatively recent one. And it underwent crucial shifts in the course of the twentieth century. But how do reparation programmes come to be? How can one assess their reparative value? To what extent can a historical perspective be of help when trying to gauge the present and future viability of reparative justice? \n\n\n\nRoundtable and debate\n\n\n\nDistinguished professor Beatrice de Graaf (History and Global Governance) will chair a roundtable discussion with: Lorena De Vita (History of International Relations)\, Thijs Bouwknegt (NIOD\, Institute for War\, Holocaust and Genocide Studies)\, Julie Fraser (Netherlands Institute of Human Rights)\, Fabián Salvioli (UN Special Rapporteur on Truth\, Justice and Reparation)\, and Henk-Cor van der Kwast (Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the International Criminal Court). \n\n\n\nPieter de Baan from the International Criminal Court’s Trust Fund for Victims will lead a public debate and provide closing remarks\, followed by a short reception. \n\n\n\nThe event will be hosted at Aula\, University Hall\, Utrecht. \n\n\n\nThe event is co-organised by the Trust Fund for Victims/International Criminal Court and Lorena De Vita’s Alfred Landecker Foundation research project Holocaust Diplomacy: the Global Politics of Memory and Forgetting. \n\n\n\n\nMore Information and Sign Up Here

SUMMARY:Discussion: Holocaust Diplomacy\, Policy Makers as Memory Makers?
DESCRIPTION:How do global institutions preserve or shape the memory of the past – and especially in the case of Holocaust memory? What is the impact of policy and decision makers on Holocaust memorialisation at the local\, national\, and international level? And to what extent is the legacy of the Holocaust present in the workings of key institutions of global governance? On 12 May\, Lorena De Vita organises the multidisciplinary discussion ‘Holocaust Diplomacy: Policy Makers as Memory Makers?’. \n\n\n\nAssistant Professor Lorena De Vita (History of International Relations) will lead a discussion between policymakers and students on the intersection of diplomacy\, history\, and the politics of memory. \n\n\n\nHolocaust diplomacy\n\n\n\nThe expert panel including Ernst Steigenga (Head of the Dutch Delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance)\, Julia Sarbo (Programme Manager of Education Programmes at the National Holocaust Museum and Deputy Head of the Dutch Delegation to the IHRA)\, and Petra van den Boomgard (assistant professor in Transitional Justice at University College Utrecht) joins in a Q&A with interested students and academics. \n\n\n\nThis event forms part of Lorena De Vita’s research project\, Holocaust Diplomacy: The Politics of Memory and Forgetting\, funded by the Alfred Landecker Foundation (Alfred Landecker Lecturer Programme)\, combines historical research with teaching and outreach activities to build on an applied history lens and tackle some of these questions. \n\n\n\n\nMore Information and Sign up Here
