SUMMARY:Red Cross: The International Humanitarian Law Congress
DESCRIPTION:The International Humanitarian Law Congress \n\n\n\nLaw of war in the Netherlands\, relevant?! \n\n\n\nNovember 3 & 4\, 2022 – The Hague \n\n\n\nAll activities of the Red Cross Movement worldwide are inextricably linked to International Humanitarian Law. The contemporary basis of the Law of War lies to a large extent in the Geneva Conventions\, its Protocols and Hague Law. \n\n\n\nThese Geneva Conventions have been signed by all countries in the world\, but what does those Treaties actually say\, what does The Hague have to do with them and what happens if parties do not comply with the rules? The Red Cross ensures that the rules of warfare are known to a wider public. We do this by connecting with various experts to exchange ideas about pressing issues of this Law. \n\n\n\nThrough this congress we contribute to a connecting network in The Netherlands of experts and interested parties in International Humanitarian Law and humanitarian aid. \n\n\n\nDuring this congress we will put together a substantive and challenging program with components such as: \n\n\n\nThe basic principles of law and their functioning for different professions;discuss current dilemmas for humanitarian aid workers;draw attention to the protective effect of the law by exposing current sub-themes and;we take a look at the future of warfare and what challenges it poses.\n\n\n\nPut these two days in your agenda so that we can meet you in The Hague in November. \n\n\n\nThe program is a paid conference for a diverse public: young and old\, experts or just interested people\, humanitarian aid worker or student. \n\n\n\nThe official languages will be Dutch and English. \n\n\n\n\nMore information and Tickets

SUMMARY:Hague Talks: What Does Climate Justice Look in the Eyes of Tomorrow's Leaders?
DESCRIPTION:The climate crisis is the biggest threat to our future and its devastating impacts are already felt around the globe. At the same time\, the generations that will face the brunt of the impact rarely have a say in the policies meant to address it. Ahead of the pivotal COP27 climate conference in Egypt\, young people from across five continents have come together to present their vision for the future. In the Global Youth Climate Agenda\, which will be officially launched during this event\, they present their ideas for a climate just world.  \n\n\n\nYoung advocates from Bangladesh\, Nigeria and the Netherlands will speak to three of the main themes of this agenda. Why is it important to educate people of all ages on climate change? How do we adapt to the already inevitable consequences of climate change? What responsibility do Global North countries have towards countries in the Global South who suffer severe losses from climate change? Three speakers will share their vision on these questions and what the answers mean for youth in their country. \n\n\n\nThe event is co-organised by We Are Tomorrow – Global Partnership This link opens in a new tab\, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Municipality of the Hague. \n\n\n\nLive Stream: \n\n\n\nJoin this online dialogue on HagueTalks YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/haguetalks This link opens in a new tab \n\n\n\n16:00 – 17:30 GMT + 2 (Amsterdam) \n\n\n\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Feminist Perspectives on Water Conflict and Cooperation
DESCRIPTION:In light of water crises and lacking or unequal access to water\, research and policy strategies have put attention to questions of gender and inclusivity in the water sector. However\, these tend to focus on women as water users and thus on the domestic and local spheres. The role of women as decision-makers\, let alone at the international level\, remains neglected. \n\n\n\nGiven the recent commitment by the Dutch government to a feminist foreign policy\, this event This link opens in a new tab combines the launch of a new book on gender dynamics in transboundary water governance with a panel debate to discuss what can we learn from a feminist perspective on water conflict and cooperation\, and how a feminist (water) diplomacy can contribute to more equitable transboundary water governance. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:KNVIR: Shaping International Accountability Around Mega-Sporting Events
DESCRIPTION:This year the Royal Netherlands Society of International Law This link opens in a new tab dedicates its Annual General Meeting This link opens in a new tab to legal questions that arise in relation to mega- sporting events\, such as: \n\n\n\nWho is responsible for violations of national or international law? The government putting out the tender\, the organisers (IOC\, FIFA)\, or the companies contracted to build the stadiums\, roads\, and hotels? How are these responsibilities divided up and how can different actors be held accountable? What should be done for victims\, in particular labour migrants\, but also for victims whose property is expropriated or who are subject to “administrative detention”? What should be done in the future to prevent repetition as much as possible? What are the shortcomings of current legislation and how can we\, practically speaking\, close the (major) gaps between theory and practice?\n\n\n\nIf you wish to attend the meeting\, you are required to register by sending a message to contact@knvir.org no later than Monday 31 October 2022.

SUMMARY:peace&justice café: The Path Ahead for Gender Justice
DESCRIPTION:On 17 November at the peace&justice café\, explore what gender justice means and how it can help us achieve more peaceful and just societies.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe United Nations has highlighted gender equality as “essential to achieve peaceful societies” and sustainable development. But despite decades of time and effort\, at the current rate of change\, it will take 136 years to close the global gender gap. While equity is more obvious in an area like education\, in other sectors like politics and the economy\, women are still to break the ‘glass ceiling’. In conflict and post-conflict settings\, women are also disproportionately impacted. \n\n\n\n\nMore information and sign-up here!

SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Nights: The Workers Cup with Panel Discussion on Sports and Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a documentary screening\, along with a lively discussion with experts from Human Rights Watch\, Trouw\, and more! The Hague Humanity Hub and Movies That Matter are collaborating on a Just Peace Movie Night\, with the screening of the enlightening documentary ‘The Workers Cup’. The documentary\, by Director Adam Sobel\, highlights the various rights violations suffered by (mainly migrant) workers tasked with building the stadiums across Qatar in preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2022.The documentary raises all sorts of questions about the biggest sporting event of the year\, and the extent to which countries can use global sporting events to change their wider public perception. \n\n\n\nThe screening will be followed by a lively panel discussion on the subject: “should we boycott the World Cup?” with experts from across the world of Human Rights and Sports! \n\n\n\nCheck out the trailer here! \n\n\n\nCan we separate football from the treatment of the people building the stadiums? Despite calls by FIFA to avoid ‘ideological and political battles’ and to ‘let football take centre stage’\, many voices believe that the two issues cannot and should not be separated. \n\n\n\n“The Workers Cup is a personal look inside Qatar’s labour camps\, where the FIFA World Cup 2022 is being built on the backs of a million-plus migrant workers. For the first time ever a film team gained access to the most controversial construction site and gives voice to the workers following their enthusiastic preparation for their own soccer cup.” \n\n\n\nJust Peace Movie Nights are film screenings and discussions on important and current issues in the world of peace and justice. \n\n\n\nTickets for this event are free for named members of The Hague Humanity Hub. \n\n\n\nProgramme: \n\n\n\n18:30 – Doors open19:00 – Introduction by The Hague Humanity Hub and Movies That Matter (with a special guest!)19:10 – Screening of ‘The Workers Cup’20:10 – Moderated discussion: ‘Should we boycot the World Cup?’ and audience Q&A– Speakers: Jan Kooy (Author: ‘Nooit Meer Qatar’ and Deputy European Media Director\, Human Rights Watch)\, Matthijs van Dam (Sports Reporter\, Trouw)\, and further guest TBC21:00 – Event ends \n\n\n\nAttendees are welcome to buy drinks from the bar throughout. \n\n\n\n\nSign up here! SUMMARY:Concert for Peace and Justice
DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, the Residentie Bachkoor celebrates its 150th birthday. This fall\, the choir will sing not only the Mass in E minor written by Anton Bruckner for eight-part choir\, wind and brass\, but also a new work from Bram Kortekaas that he has composed on behalf of the choir.   \n\n\n\nKortekaas’ contemporary piece is a musical reaction to the mass of Bruckner for which he chose the text of the pacifist pamphlet Dulce bellum inexpertis\, written by the Dutch philosopher Desiderius Erasmus. A secular text in Latin against war which fits perfectly with The Hague\, city of peace and justice. In it\, Erasmus outlines what he sees as the fallacious ideas about war in his time and contrasts them with his own pacifist\, gospel-based theories. “Everyone who knows what war is\, has an abhorrence of it. There is nothing worse and nothing that should be avoided more. War is inhuman and unchristian\,” he argues. The text was chosen before the war in Ukraine started. This conflict makes Erasmus’ text on the miseries of war even more meaningful and relevant.  \n\n\n\n\nMore information and tickets

SUMMARY:ICCT Live Webinar: Masculinity and Violent Extremism
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 23 November\, 2022\, 10:00-11:30 CET\, the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) will host a Live Briefing for the release of the book ‘Masculinity and Violent Extremism’ This link opens in a new tab. \n\n\n\nViolent extremist groups and networks are proliferating across the globe. To understand them and to prevent violent extremist acts\, we must pay attention to masculinity. Masculinity defines the social expectations of manhood and the social structuring of hierarchies based on the privileging of what is considered masculine and the devaluation of that considered feminine. The participants in violent extremist groups are often men\, but beyond this\, such groups’ origins\, ideologies internal processes and means of recruitment are tied in powerful ways to masculinity. Violent extremist groups often draw on and intensify ideologies of misogyny or women-hating that are already present in society. \n\n\n\nThis webinar brings together Josh Roose\, Michael Flood and Mark Alfano\, three of the authors of the recently released book ‘Masculinity and Violent Extremism’. They will explore men’s motivations to support or participate in violent extremist groups and commit violent political acts. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here! This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Democratie op Springen?
\n\n\n\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Festival: Faith in Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:Next year it will be 75 years ago that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights This link opens in a new tabwas signed. And still these rights are violated in every part of the world. Human rights are not something far away\, think about the CoronaCheck-app and the right to privacy. Or the difference in salary between men and women en the right to equality. Subconsiously and indirectly even you can contribute to violation of human rights. For example\, by buying clothes that are produced with childlabour. Or eating a bar of chocolate of which the cacao is harvested by slaves. But how do you know? How do you find out? And what action can you take yourself? \n\n\n\nHuman rights can not be taken for granted. We have to stay alert that we live up to them and that starts with more knowledge and awareness. That is exactly why The Hague University of Applied Sciences This link opens in a new tab (THUAS) organise the festival ‘Faith in Human Rights’ This link opens in a new tab at 8 December. \n\n\n\nHearing the stories of other people\, participating in a workshop\, visiting a market and an exhibition will show you that human rights play an important role in your life as well. You will be inspired how to contribute in creating a culture in education\, organisation of even society with care and attention for human rights. This festival is an initiative of Centre of Expertise Global and Inclusive Learning and Initiatives of Change. The Royal Conservatoire is also a partner of this event and provides one of the workshops in the form of a concert. This concert is also – freely accessible – performed on Friday evening 9 December in Amare. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here! This link opens in a new tab
