SUMMARY:Solidarity for Change: Building grassroots movements for justice
DESCRIPTION:From small partnerships to large-scale coalitions\, what is the role of grassroots activism for global justice? \n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nAround the world\, grassroots activists are coming together to call for an end to impunity\, and for justice and human rights to be respected. They challenge corrupt and powerful elites\, call for gender equality\, an environmental revolution and justice for serious crimes. \n\n\n\nWorking from the ground up\, they have enormous potential to catalyse systemic change in their own communities and globally. Not being held back by economic\, security or political interests\, they can point the way towards a better future\, one that is more just and equal. \n\n\n\nBut for change to happen\, these initiatives need our full solidarity\, especially as many activists are working in increasingly repressive environments. Building a larger community of solidarity around grassroots activism will increase the chances of overcoming crises and achieving lasting change. \n\n\n\nFrom Colombia to Syria\, this discussion will put to the fore the significance of movement building and activism for justice\, from small partnerships to large-scale coalitions. \n\n\n\nWith participation from the audience\, we’ll look at how we can all be part of and support local activism to address the root causes of impunity globally. \n\n\n\nProgramme: \n\n\n\n17:30 – Doors open18:00 – Panel discussion begins19:30 – Drinks and networking\n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\nAhmad Helmi – Co-founder of Ta’afi\, Syria. SUMMARY:Documentary Screening: A Tale of Two Starved Cities in Syria
DESCRIPTION:During the war in Syria many different civilian populations suffered. The documentary ‘A Tale of Two Starved Cities’ (2022) focuses on the siege of al-Fu’ah and Kefriya in Idlib province\, northern Syria near Aleppo. These towns were controlled by Syrian government forces. They had majority Shia populations. Syrian rebel groups besieged them for three years\, from 2015-2018. Thousands of civilians were trapped. Most humanitarian access was stopped. When they were evacuated their suffering did not cease. This film wants to show the effects of that siege on women and children\, and the issues that doctors and teachers living in those conditions witnessed. \n\n\n\nProgram: \n\n\n\nIntroduction: 16:00 – 16:15Screening of the Documentary: 16:15-16:45Panel Discussion: 16:45-17:15F&B: 17:15-17:45\n\n\n\nRegister here: http://icicl.org/details.asp?id=631

SUMMARY:The London Story Movie Screening & Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The London Story\, alongside The World Is Watching India team\, invites you to a film screening and discussion on Friday\, 30th September\, 2022 from 5pm to 7pm to mark two years of unjust incarceration of 18 students and activists in India who were charged with terrorism for protesting against changes to the citizenship law that threatened to disenfranchise Indian Muslims. 12 of them\, all Muslim\, are still in prison.   \n\n\n\nYou may recall that the powerful protests against the Constitutional Amendment Act 2019 (CAA)\, led by Muslim women\, which had erupted across India had been met with an outpouring of support including from the world over.  \n\n\n\nBy using the draconian anti-terrorism law\, the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA)\, which allows suspects to be incarcerated for long periods without trial\, the Indian State sought to crush the protests. The 18 students and activists were charged with hatching a conspiracy to start riots in Delhi\, in time for the visit of then American President Donald Trump. The charges of conspiracy were made despite the announcement of Donald Trump’s visit not even having been made when the conspiracy was meant to be hatched. On the contrary\, we have clear evidence of inflammatory speeches by senior elected representatives of the ruling party in India\, the BJP\, against the anti-CAA protestors\, including on the very day of the violence\, which left 53 dead\, of which 40 were Muslim.   \n\n\n\nThe film which will be screened “Delhi Riots Case: The Unknown Faces Behind Bars Under UAPA” has been produced by an Indian online media portal\, The Quint. It poignantly and powerfully profiles some of the protestors to share both personal and other challenges their family members face. The screening will be followed by a discussion of the situation as it stands with activists and friends and families of those arrested.  \n\n\n\nThe film screening and discussion is part of a series of global solidarity events being organized by diaspora groups\, including South Asia Solidarity Group (UK)\, The Humanism Project (Australia)\, Indian American Muslim Council (USA)\, India Civil Watch (USA)\, Hindus4HumanRights (USA)\, InSAF (USA)\, People Against Apartheid and Fascism (South Africa)\, Indian Solidarity Germany\, Aotearoa Alliance of Progressive Indians (New Zealand)\, and Scottish Indians for Justice\, to reiterate our strong support for these 18 students and activists at this two-year mark.  \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you! \n\n\n\n\nSign-up here!

SUMMARY:Open and responsible science: From harm to justice in knowledge production
DESCRIPTION:As part of ISS’ 70th anniversary celebrations\, we will host an event on Open and Responsible Science\, Engaged Research and Epistemic Justice: From harming to healing through knowledge co-creation. The event will be hybrid (both in-person and online). \n\n\n\nCan Open and Responsible Science (ORS) respond to the challenge of justice in access to knowledge (epistemic justice) given the staggering amount of inequality in academic knowledge? \n\n\n\nORS that seeks justice in access to knowledge puts equity between forms of knowledges and ways of knowing at the very centre of knowledge acquisition. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe discussion will revolve around the following questions: \n\n\n\nWhich injustices in knowledge production and co-creation do invited speakers experience in their (communities’) life and work? What are their demands towards academia/academics?What alternative forms of knowledge production and co-creation do they propose?\n\n\n\n\nSign up here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Red Cross: The International Humanitarian Law Congress
DESCRIPTION:The International Humanitarian Law Congress \n\n\n\nLaw of war in the Netherlands\, relevant?! \n\n\n\nNovember 3 & 4\, 2022 – The Hague \n\n\n\nAll activities of the Red Cross Movement worldwide are inextricably linked to International Humanitarian Law. The contemporary basis of the Law of War lies to a large extent in the Geneva Conventions\, its Protocols and Hague Law. \n\n\n\nThese Geneva Conventions have been signed by all countries in the world\, but what does those Treaties actually say\, what does The Hague have to do with them and what happens if parties do not comply with the rules? The Red Cross ensures that the rules of warfare are known to a wider public. We do this by connecting with various experts to exchange ideas about pressing issues of this Law. \n\n\n\nThrough this congress we contribute to a connecting network in The Netherlands of experts and interested parties in International Humanitarian Law and humanitarian aid. \n\n\n\nDuring this congress we will put together a substantive and challenging program with components such as: \n\n\n\nThe basic principles of law and their functioning for different professions;discuss current dilemmas for humanitarian aid workers;draw attention to the protective effect of the law by exposing current sub-themes and;we take a look at the future of warfare and what challenges it poses.\n\n\n\nPut these two days in your agenda so that we can meet you in The Hague in November. \n\n\n\nThe program is a paid conference for a diverse public: young and old\, experts or just interested people\, humanitarian aid worker or student. \n\n\n\nThe official languages will be Dutch and English. \n\n\n\n\nMore information and Tickets

SUMMARY:Hague Talks: What Does Climate Justice Look in the Eyes of Tomorrow's Leaders?
DESCRIPTION:The climate crisis is the biggest threat to our future and its devastating impacts are already felt around the globe. At the same time\, the generations that will face the brunt of the impact rarely have a say in the policies meant to address it. Ahead of the pivotal COP27 climate conference in Egypt\, young people from across five continents have come together to present their vision for the future. In the Global Youth Climate Agenda\, which will be officially launched during this event\, they present their ideas for a climate just world.  \n\n\n\nYoung advocates from Bangladesh\, Nigeria and the Netherlands will speak to three of the main themes of this agenda. Why is it important to educate people of all ages on climate change? How do we adapt to the already inevitable consequences of climate change? SUMMARY:Book Launch: Feminist Perspectives on Water Conflict and Cooperation
DESCRIPTION:In light of water crises and lacking or unequal access to water\, research and policy strategies have put attention to questions of gender and inclusivity in the water sector. However\, these tend to focus on women as water users and thus on the domestic and local spheres. The role of women as decision-makers\, let alone at the international level\, remains neglected. \n\n\n\nGiven the recent commitment by the Dutch government to a feminist foreign policy\, this event This link opens in a new tab combines the launch of a new book on gender dynamics in transboundary water governance with a panel debate to discuss what can we learn from a feminist perspective on water conflict and cooperation\, and how a feminist (water) diplomacy can contribute to more equitable transboundary water governance. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here!
