SUMMARY:Understanding Climate Violence
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging evening as we unpack the who\, where\, what\, and whys of climate-related violence. How is climate change contributing to violence? In a rapidly warming world\, what can be done to stifle the threat of worse hostilities down the line and limit the impact on communities? And\, amid cascading risks\, how is climate security overlapping with other pressing issues\, such as inequality and misinformation? \n\n\n\nJournalist Peter Schwartzstein This link opens in a new tab will share many of the key themes and examples from The Heat and the Fury\, his recently published book and the first in-depth exploration of climate-related violence for the casual reader. He has spent more than a decade documenting how climate stresses are bleeding into violence big and small\, including ISIS’s exploitation of collapsing agricultural conditions to bolster its ranks in Iraq––and the impact of rising seas levels on Bangladeshi piracy. \n\n\n\nThis event\, held in the immediate run up to the next global climate conference\, COP29\, aims to engage a broader audience in discussions about climate security risks\, particularly as they intersect with other critical issues. The audience is invited to ask their pressing questions to the speakers. Speakers will also strive to raise public awareness about what has traditionally been a topic confined to academic and security discussions. By highlighting these connections\, the event above all seeks to foster a more comprehensive understanding of the implications of climate change on global relations. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nPeter Schwartstein \n\n\n\nMore speakers will be announced shortly. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve a spot!

SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night: All That Breathes
DESCRIPTION:Part of The Hague Climate Week  \n\n\n\nDuring The Hague Climate Week\, in collaboration with Filmhuis and Movies that Matter\, we present the critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated film All That Breathes. This event is part of the Just Peace Movie Nights series\, a program that brings important issues around peace and justice to the attention of a wide audience through film and storytelling. After the film screening\, we will engage in a conversation with experts on topics such as the rights of nature\, environmental law\, climate justice\, the impact of environmental pollution on biodiversity and the opportunities we as citizens have to take action on this ourselves. \n\n\n\nAbout All That Breathes \n\n\n\nThe documentary follows brothers Saud and Nadeem\, who began caring for injured birds of prey 20 years ago after discovering that the local animal hospital only treated vegetarian birds. Their home is home to dozens of raptors and owls\, mostly black kites. These birds populate the city in large numbers\, and within the Indian Muslim community it is believed that they are capable of eating trouble. New Delhi\, one of the most densely populated and perhaps most polluted cities in the world\, nevertheless buzzes with life. In beautifully filmed scenes\, animals appear in the most unexpected places\, as if they have always belonged there. \n\n\n\nThe brothers describe how life is constantly experimenting and adapting to changing conditions. For example\, birds sing louder to drown out city noise and have discovered that cigarette butts help fight parasites. All That Breathes\, by Indian filmmaker Shaunak Sen\, is an intriguing and layered documentary about the brothers’ rescue efforts in New Delhi\, where both animals and humans struggle with the effects of pollution. With humor and wisdom\, the two Muslim brothers show how everything in nature – from fungi to humans – is interconnected. Although the city is often considered a living organism\, this film makes clear how true that cliché is. \n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\n\nDr. Lorenzo Pellegrini\, a Professor of Economics of Environment and Development at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS)\n\n\n\nDaniel Eggleston\, a consultant focused on policy\, programming\, and research for IDLO’s Climate Justice portfolio\n\n\n\nJiske van Oeffelt\, World’s Youth for Climate Justice campaigner and expert in Environmental Sciences and nature rights\n\n\n\n\nProgram \n\n\n\nDoors open at 19:00\, and drinks are available in the café. The film screening begins at 19:10 and will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A. After the official program\, we cordially invite attendees to stay for informal networking and drinks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSign up here!

SUMMARY:Humanitarian response in focus: Addressing the impact of hostilities in Lebanon and the escalating regional conflict
DESCRIPTION:– on invitation only – \n\n\n\nAbout the event\n\n\n\nAs the violence in Gaza\, the West Bank\, and Lebanon persists without any sign of a ceasefire\, civilians across the Middle East continue to endure extreme suffering. The conflict has escalated dramatically\, with significant casualties and widespread damage. In Lebanon alone\, Israeli attacks have caused more than 2200 casualties (reported on 15/10/24) and more than 809\,000 people (reported on 20/10/24) have been forcibly displaced (Source: UN News). The impact of the escalation is of huge concern. Aid workers and organisations are working around the clock to support those in need\, despite overwhelming challenges like the destruction of healthcare facilities and civilian infrastructure. \n\n\n\nIn response to the current situation. KUNO and the Dutch Relief Alliance (DRA) organise an expert meeting with a specific focus on Lebanon. While previous sessions in April and October concentrated on Gaza\, this meeting will highlight Lebanon’s growing humanitarian needs\, without losing sight of the regional context. \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\nNora Stel\, Assistant Professor in Conflict Studies\, Radboud University Nijmegen.\n\n\n\nHans Jaap Melissen\, Freelance Journalist and War Correspondent.\n\n\n\nA War Child representative from the DRA Lebanon Acute Joint Response.\n\n\n\nPia Zeinoun\, Research Lead at Oxfam Novib\, Netherlands\, Vice President of Embrace (Lebanon) and former Director of the Embrace Mental Health Center.\n\n\n\nA representative from UNRWA. \n\n\n\n\nTopics for discussion\n\n\n\n\nA closer examination of the regional geopolitical landscape and national political dynamics. \n\n\n\nThe current humanitarian needs in Lebanon\, in the wake of the recent escalation of violence.\n\n\n\nHumanitarian efforts on the ground\, led by local actors\, and the newly launched DRA Joint Response in Lebanon.\n\n\n\n\nThe event will be followed by drinks and networking opportunities. \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nRegistration required via: kuno@kuno-platform.nl \n\n\n\nf

SUMMARY:Far-right influencers and the platforms that enable them
DESCRIPTION:During this event\, The London Story introduces its recent report which explores the phenomenon of cow vigilantism gone viral. What used to be an isolated phenomenon\, lynching and other violent attacks committed against religious minorities accused of consuming cows or transporting them for consumption\, has now exploded across the online space. Facilitated by social media networking sites that fail to enforce their DOI policies and fuelled by the political weight of local elections\, almost nowhere is this change visible than in the so-called Hindi Belt. \n\n\n\nIn addition to launching its report\, The London Story brings together experts who follow the global trend of far-right influencers\, their rising importance in democracies across the world\, platforms’ inability or unwillingness to execute their community guidelines\, and the real-world consequences of these influencers’ popularity and fame. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve a spot!

SUMMARY:T.M.C. Institute: The EU’s 'geopolitical awakening': Beyond trade and defence [Public panel]
DESCRIPTION:The T.M.C. Asser Instituut’s Centre for the Law of EU External Relations (CLEER) and Leiden University are organising a two-day PhD workshop on the legal implications of the EU’s ‘geopolitical awakening’. The event is a follow-up to the successful PhD workshop that took place on 6-7 May 2024 and is organised with the generous financial support of the Municipality of The Hague. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will conclude with a public panel discussion of academics and policy experts at Leiden University College The Hague\, which will discuss the reverberation of the EU’s ‘geopoliticisation’ beyond the issues of trade and defence\, which have already received significant attention. The panel\, therefore\, will focus on ways in which the geopolitical turn affects – or should affect – other domains areas\, such as the environment\, migration\, technology\, enlargement and the EU’s traditional commitment to multilateralism and the rules-based international order in general. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night: YUMI - The Whole World
DESCRIPTION:On November 16th\, in partnership with World’s Youth for Climate Justice and Interactive Media Foundation\, we present YUMI – The Whole World\, a documentary about the crucial work of World’s Youth for Climate Justice and the Pacific Island Students Fighting Climate Change. These young leaders are leading the case for the ICJ Advisory Opinion\, a groundbreaking effort to hold countries accountable for their impact on climate change and protect vulnerable communities. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the Just Peace Movie Nights series\, a program that brings important issues of peace and justice to a wide audience through film and storytelling. After the film screening\, we will engage in a discussion with experts about themes that come up before in the film. \n\n\n\nThis evening focuses on the ICJAO campaign and the transformative role of youth activism in driving change. You will learn how young advocates are using international legal frameworks to combat climate change and promote climate justice\, emphasizing that the fight for a sustainable future is also a fight for human rights. \n\n\n\nAbout YUMI – The Whole World  \n\n\n\nYUMI tells the inspiring story of law students like Solomon\, Vishal and Romabeth\, who set out from the University of the South Pacific as part of a movement to take climate change to the International Court of Justice through the United Nations to save their home islands from extinction. \n\n\n\nThe three students work their way up from a small university room to the international stage. They learn how to deal with ministers\, ambassadors and commissioners\, experience the frustrations of diplomacy and face the challenges of their ambitious goal: to push through a historic resolution at the United Nations that will legally define the obligations of states to address climate change. \n\n\n\nWill their relentless motivation and the challenging countries they must overcome be enough to convince 97 UN member states to take their case to the world’s highest court? \n\n\n\nSpeakers to be announced soon. \n\n\n\nProgram \n\n\n\nDoors open at 19:00\, and refreshments will be available in the café. The film screening begins at 19:10 and will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A. After the official program\, we cordially invite attendees to stay for informal networking and drinks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSign up here!

SUMMARY:IDLO Partnership Forum 2024
DESCRIPTION:The world is grappling with complex\, interrelated crises – including conflict\, climate change\, declining trust in institutions\, and a widening justice gap – that threaten to reverse decades of development gains\, undermine the multilateral system\, and destabilize societies. With growing polarization and heightened risks\, the next few years are likely to be an extreme resilience test of governance at all levels. \n\n\n\nThe Pact for the Future\, the Global Digital Compact\, and the Declaration on Future Generations\, together reflect global leaders’ commitment to correct course and build a renewed multilateralism to address shared challenges. The rule of law will be central to delivering on these bold ambitions. \n\n\n\nIn a world of unprecedented challenges and opportunities\, IDLO’s new Strategic Plan 2025-2028 is grounded in our belief that the rule of law is not just an abstract principle but a powerful tool that can promote peace and prosperity\, unlock development potential\, and protect human rights for all. \n\n\n\nAs an enabler and accelerator of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, the rule of law can address the root causes of global crises and equip people and governments to develop fair and collaborative approaches to navigate a rapidly changing world. IDLO’s approach is tailored to the specific needs and contexts of its partners\, ensuring that the rule of law contributes meaningfully to improving people’s lives. \n\n\n\nOn the occasion of the Strategic Plan’s adoption by the Assembly of Parties\, the 2024 edition of IDLO’s Partnership Forum will feature a panel of high-level speakers who will share their experiences of using rule of law solutions to combat corruption\, reduce the justice gap for women and girls\, advance climate justice and enable inclusive economic growth. \n\n\n\nSimultaneous interpretation will be provided in English\, French and Spanish \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:CYBER RESILIENCE FOR NGOs REPORT LAUNCH
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the official launch of the Cyber Resilience for NGOs report\, the culmination of the consortium work and a detailed and insightful look into the cyber security landscape for NGOs in the Netherlands! \n\n\n\nThe Cyber Resilience for NGOs (CR4NGOs) project is dedicated to enhancing the cybersecurity of non-profits in the Netherlands\, a sector often vulnerable to cyberattacks. Through capacity-building\, tailored threat intelligence\, and crisis simulations\, CR4NGOs provides free\, expert support to close the cybersecurity gaps faced by NGOs. The initiative leverages the proven methodologies of the CyberPeace Builders This link opens in a new tab platform.  \n\n\n\nThe project brings together four key partners: The Hague Humanity Hub This link opens in a new tab\, the CyberPeace Institute This link opens in a new tab\, the Connect2Trust Foundation This link opens in a new tab\, and The Shadowserver Foundation This link opens in a new tab. The project wants to provide NGOs with individualised support to identify and combat key cyber threats and aims to protect both the organizations’ staff and their beneficiaries from potential attacks\, significantly improving the overall cyber resilience of the entire sector.  \n\n\n\nThis project is part of the Cyber Resilience subsidy scheme This link opens in a new tab (2023-24) and is co-funded by the Dutch Enterprise Agency This link opens in a new tab (RVO). The project consortium is also a partnership  This link opens in a new tabof the Digital Trust Center This link opens in a new tab(DTC). \n\n\n\nThe programme will feature: \n\n\n\n\nOpening words from Deputy Mayor Saskia Bruines\n\n\n\nAn introduction to the Digital Trust Center and the partnerships towards streghening cybersecurity of organisations throughout the country.\n\n\n\nAn interactive panel discussion on the trends and insights from the CR4NGOs report followed by the scoping of what’s next for the non-profit community\, including the presentation of Beyond 125 Action Plan This link opens in a new tab\n\n\n\n\nThe report   \n\n\n\nA key outcome of the project is the production of a comprehensive report that provides insights into the cyber threat landscape and the cybersecurity maturity levels of target organisations in the Netherlands. The report will emphasise the human impact of cyberattacks\, focusing on how these attacks affect NGOs and the communities they serve.  \n\n\n\nThe Future of the project:  \n\n\n\nThanks to data collected in collaboration with the 30 organisations participating in the programme\, the report will explore the specific cyber threats facing NGOs in the Netherlands\, examining their risk exposure\, maturity\, vulnerability profiles\, and resilience against cyberattacks. Based on the analysis\, the report will provide actionable recommendations to build capacities and resilience to mitigate cyber risks.  \n\n\n\nThis pilot project aims to create a sustainable\, long-term support system for the NGO sector across the Netherlands. By fostering collaboration between NGOs\, industry\, academia\, and philanthropy\, the consortium seeks to establish a community that ensures ongoing cybersecurity support even beyond the current project cycle. The CyberPeace Builders platform will remain a central resource\, providing ongoing assistance to both existing and new NGOs. This continued engagement offers non-profits the opportunity to benefit from expert guidance and to further enhance their cyber resilience over time.  \n\n\n\n\nSign up for the CR4NGOs report launch This link opens in a new tab\n\n\n\n\nNGO Participation:  \n\n\n\nInterested NGOs can join the CyberPeace Builders This link opens in a new tab platform\, where they begin by completing a brief self-assessment. This process pairs them with trusted cybersecurity specialists\, who work with the organizations on a mission basis\, ensuring that support is tailored to each NGO’s specific needs. Assistance may involve reviewing cybersecurity policies\, installing password management systems\, conducting staff cyber resilience training\, and more. Over 30 NGOs\, spanning various fields such as conflict resolution\, healthcare access\, and environmental conservation\, are already benefiting from this support.  \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please reach out to digitalisation@humanityhub.net

SUMMARY:Reshaping Partnerships
DESCRIPTION:Current North-South strategic partnerships often struggle to be fully equitable. Co-designing problems and solutions within the partnership chain can provide valuable insights. Plan International\, in collaboration with KPSRL\, is hosting a learning event. The aim is to share\, reflect and discuss the strategic partnership chain\, in its current and preferred shape. The presented findings\, are the results of human centred co-design sessions\, collected during a one year project. Participants included girls and young women\, community members\, development practitioners\, donors\, and humans in the private and academic sector. Main topics of discussion of the learning session are challenges\, opportunities\, and power dynamics involved in current and future partnership set-ups.  More importantly\, we seek to exchange on how we can take action for more equitable partnerships.    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here!
