SUMMARY:Peer2Peer Session: Facilitating Safe Spaces for Conflict Resolution – with YPI
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this Peer2Peer group is a member-exclusive event. If you’d like to explore membership of The Hague Humanity Hub\, please contact the Community team. \n\n\n\nThe Humanity Hub Peer2Peer group on facilitation is back! These member-led sessions are intended to support knowledge sharing and collaboration between Hub members who share expertise and interest in a specific theme or topic. The facilitation Peer2Peer group is all about sharing how to use certain facilitation tools or methods in your work.  \n\n\n\nThe next session\, on 1 December\, is being organised by our members from the Youth Peace Initiative This link opens in a new tab\, who will guide participants in the fundamentals of creating ‘safe spaces’ for dialogue. As part of their peacebuilding efforts with young Palestinians and Israelis\, YPI has years of experience hosting dialogue sessions in which participants from both sides of the conflict can openly share their experiences. The creation of such safe spaces is vital for conflict resolution; they ensure dignity\, respect\, safety\, inclusion\, and positive self-worth – all fundamentally important for constructive conversations.  \n\n\n\nThis workshop is for anyone who wants to learn how to facilitate safe spaces\, and apply the basics of conflict resolution to both their personal and professional lives.  \n\n\n\n\nSign-up here!

SUMMARY:Festival: Faith in Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:Next year it will be 75 years ago that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights This link opens in a new tabwas signed. And still these rights are violated in every part of the world. Human rights are not something far away\, think about the CoronaCheck-app and the right to privacy. Or the difference in salary between men and women en the right to equality. Subconsiously and indirectly even you can contribute to violation of human rights. For example\, by buying clothes that are produced with childlabour. Or eating a bar of chocolate of which the cacao is harvested by slaves. But how do you know? How do you find out? And what action can you take yourself? \n\n\n\nHuman rights can not be taken for granted. We have to stay alert that we live up to them and that starts with more knowledge and awareness. That is exactly why The Hague University of Applied Sciences This link opens in a new tab (THUAS) organise the festival ‘Faith in Human Rights’ This link opens in a new tab at 8 December. \n\n\n\nHearing the stories of other people\, participating in a workshop\, visiting a market and an exhibition will show you that human rights play an important role in your life as well. You will be inspired how to contribute in creating a culture in education\, organisation of even society with care and attention for human rights. This festival is an initiative of Centre of Expertise Global and Inclusive Learning and Initiatives of Change. The Royal Conservatoire is also a partner of this event and provides one of the workshops in the form of a concert. This concert is also – freely accessible – performed on Friday evening 9 December in Amare. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here! This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Movies that Matter On Tour: Erasing Frank
DESCRIPTION:As part of Movies that Matter On Tour This link opens in a new tab\, Filmhuis Den Haag This link opens in a new tab will screen the fiction film Erasing Frank This link opens in a new tab on Sunday 11 December at 15:00.   \n\n\n\nAbout Erasing Frank  \n\n\n\nIn Budapest in 1983\, Frank and his underground punk band give a riveting show. However\, the band is arrested during the performance for ‘anti-state arousal and propaganda’. With the help of his friend Anna\, Frank manages to avoid jail and is placed in an open ward of the psychiatric institution where Hanna works. There\, many artists\, writers\, pacifists\, and intellectuals are ‘recovering from stress’.  \n\n\n\nDespite the relative freedom in the open ward\, Frank has trouble holding on to his sanity. Together with like-minded Hanna\, he looks for ways to express himself in an environment which represses all individuality. In often surreal\, dreamlike sequences\, Frank interacts with many interesting characters along the way. Such as the aging Dr. Eros\, who warns him to start supporting ‘the most progressive regime in the world’. Is there a way for Frank and Hanna to beat the system?  \n\n\n\nAbout Movies that Matter On Tour  \n\n\n\nOn Tour is a spin-off of the Movies that Matter Festival. Each year\, we select eight great festival titles that we aim to offer a wide platform throughout the country. In cooperation with (currently) seventeen film theatres and local volunteer groups\, we screen a film or documentary that matters\, every month from October to May. The screenings are accompanied by in-depth programmes and guest speakers arranged by local groups. In this way\, we encourage dialogue and broaden perspectives in local contexts.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister here! This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:T.M.C. Asser Institute: Environmental Harm and International Criminal Law
DESCRIPTION:The year of 2022 marked the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Stockholm Declaration This link opens in a new tab\, which recalls that: ‘man’s capability to transform his surroundings\, if used wisely\, can bring to all peoples the benefits of development and the opportunity to enhance the quality of life. Wrongly or heedlessly applied\, the same power can do incalculable harm to human beings and the human environment.’With the threat of anthropogenic harm becoming clearer each year\, it is imperative to explore legal means to tackle serious damage to the environment. The International Criminal Court (ICC) This link opens in a new tab has signaled This link opens in a new tab that it will place emphasis on prosecuting the most egregious incidents of environmental destruction. Experts have suggested adding This link opens in a new tab the crime of ecocide to the court’s statute. However\, the ICC is subject to jurisdictional limits that restrict its ability to adjudicate ecocentric cases. \n\n\n\nAgainst this backdrop\, the panel will discuss the possibility of using judicial proceedings to establish responsibility for serious environmental harm (including ecocide) under international criminal law. SUMMARY:ICCT Live Briefing: Ten Years Later – Lessons from Decade-Long Counter-Terrorism Efforts in the Sahel
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 17 January 2023\, from 16:00 to 17:30 CET\, the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) will host a Live Briefing ‘Ten Years Later – Lessons from Decade-Long Counter-Terrorism Efforts in the Sahel’ moderated by Méryl Demuynck\, Research Fellow under ICCT’s Preventing/Countering Violent Extremism Pillar. \n\n\n\nJanuary 2023 marks the tenth anniversary of the launch of France’s Operation Serval aimed at countering terrorist groups’ presence across northern Mali\, soon followed by Operation Barkhane deployed throughout the broader Sahel. A decade later\, the region continues to be destabilised by a plethora of violent non-state armed groups\, including various al-Qaeda and Islamic State-affiliated organisations. Alongside a constantly worsening security situation and political instability\, illustrated by the multiple coups conducted over the past two years\, the Sahel moreover seems to have turned into a major stage for global powers competition and strategic rivalries. \n\n\n\nThis Live Briefing will reflect on the lessons learned from a decade of international\, regional\, and national efforts to counter violent extremism in the Sahel\, and discuss the potential impact of the reconfiguration of the European and international presence – including Barkhane forces’ withdrawal from Mali – on regional security and local communities.  It will moreover explore the drivers and impact of the shift away from traditional European partners\, and the entry of new actors onto the Sahel’s security scene\, including Russian Wagner Group mercenaries.  \n\n\n\n\nMore information and sign-up

SUMMARY:CFJ: Launching a Global Mapping Tool at The Hague Humanity Hub (Feb 7\, Online)
DESCRIPTION:Justice Beyond Borders:Launching a Global Mapping Tool to Increase Survivors’ Access to Justice \n\n\n\n7 February 2023 | 17:00 CET \n\n\n\nHow can the world wage justice for atrocity crimes when perpetrators are so hard to reach? The Clooney Foundation for Justice offers a practical answer and a way forward. \n\n\n\nThe Clooney Foundation invites you to the official launch of the Justice Beyond Borders mapping tool\, the result of a months-long data-gathering and legal analysis project that tracks opportunities for prosecuting the perpetrators of serious international crimes – war crimes\, crimes against humanity\, genocide\, and aggression – in national courts around the world. \n\n\n\nOur research shows that more than 170 countries and territories can hold perpetrators of such crimes accountable under national laws\, even when the crimes were committed beyond their own borders. But so far\, only 24 countries have launched such prosecutions\, primarily in the Global North. \n\n\n\nGiven the limited jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court\, national prosecutions of international crimes are a critical tool for combating impunity and a beacon of hope for survivors from Syria\, Ukraine\, Afghanistan\, and other places where mass atrocities are being committed. But the lack of up-to-date\, accessible information on relevant national laws has limited its effectiveness. \n\n\n\nJustice Beyond Borders is an online tool that enables survivors\, lawyers\, civil society actors and law enforcement practitioners to make use of existing laws to access justice. This intuitive\, searchable database tracks the criminalization of serious international crimes across 217 countries and territories. The database also shows the conditions for exercising jurisdiction over each crime\, as well as the procedural requirements for triggering successful cases. \n\n\n\nThe project seeks to deliver meaningful access to justice for all survivors and ensure that perpetrators have nowhere to hide. Achieving this goal means mobilising as many countries as possible to investigate and prosecute serious international crimes and ensuring that survivors know and can exercise their rights. Only then will accountability become the norm and impunity the exception. \n\n\n\nThe launch event will feature a presentation of the mapping tool and the key findings of the project\, a panel discussion and Q&A with leading international experts\, and a reception. \n\n\n\nWhat: Launch of Justice Beyond Borders: A Global Mapping Tool \n\n\n\nWhen: 7 February 2023 | 17:00 CET \n\n\n\nWhere: Humanity Hub\, Fluwelen Burgwal 58\, 2511 CJ\, The Hague and Online \n\n\n\nWho: The Docket’s legal director Anya Neistat will be joined by leading international justice experts \n\n\n\n\nSign up here!

SUMMARY:Hub Intern Networking Drinks Featuring Global Risk Advice
DESCRIPTION:Are you currently an intern at an organisation within the Humanity Hub’s Membership Community? Then this Hub Intern Networking event is for you!  \n\n\n\nMany of our member organisations have interns on their team\, and this event\, organised by our interns for yours\, is the right place to network & share experience.  \n\n\n\nFor this second intern drinks\, we’ve got something very special for you: a workshop about risk assessment by Michele Moorlag-Salcido\, Junior Advisor and Office Administrator at Global Risk Advice (GRA). Global Risk Advice is an organisation that equips NGOs and FBOs working in challenging circumstances and volatile environments with accessible risk management tool and trainings. And you can get an insight into their work – great\, right? \n\n\n\nThe walk-in for this social event starts at 17:00- 17:15 at the Hub’s Café. 17:30 is the begin of our workshop. Michele will teach you more about how to medicate risk\, both in personal and professional life. How do you identify certain risks? What is the context and the area you’re working in? How do you prepare for certain risks?  \n\n\n\nOf course\, there is also time for drinks and getting to know each other. So\, come and meet your fellow interns and possible future colleagues and learn some professional skills on February 15! We look forward to seeing new and familiar faces! \n\n\n\nDon’t forget: this event is for current interns from organisations within the Humanity Hub’s membership community. As an intern you don’t have to be a member yourself\, but your organisation needs to be. Coming to this event does also not mean you become a member who can sign up for other member-only events. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here! This link opens in a new tab
