SUMMARY:Summer School of 2022 - Conflict Resolution: How to Mediate?
DESCRIPTION:Whether it is Ukraine\, Israel\, Yemen\, or Afghanistan\, conflict is an undeniable part of the domain of international relations. Although the nature of conflict has changed to include different modes of warfare such as drones and private mercenaries\, the main questions surrounding conflict have remained the same\, namely ‘why does a conflict occur?’ and ‘what can be done to solve a given conflict?’. The latter question is where the role of international negotiation in the shape of mediation comes into view. In the words of William Zartman\, conflicts are ‘only ripe for resolution through mediation when a Mutually Hurting Stalemate is reached’. \n\n\n\n Diplomats play a key role in facilitating mediation sessions. But as we all know not every meeting is a success\, indicating that you cannot be a good mediator before becoming a good negotiator. So how do diplomats know when this so-called Mutually Hurting Stalemate is reached? And if so\, where do they meet and who should mediate? If you recognize yourself in these questions then this summer school might exactly be what you are looking for. \n\n\n\nThe program of 2022 includes speakers like Paul Meerts\, Hans van den Berg and practising diplomats. Students are offered the opportunity to expand their (international) network with networking sessions and practice their skills in a diplomatic simulation. In doing so\, participants represent a country or an international organisation\, prepare a position\, and negotiate an agreement.

SUMMARY:Major Trends in Global Migration: In Conversation with Leo Lucassen
DESCRIPTION:In the coming decades\, supporting refugees\, internally displaced people (IDPs) and other migrants will likely demand a growing effort from humanitarian organizations. At the same time\, the topic of migration is increasingly being politicized\, placing humanitarian organizations in the middle of a political battle. This is why KUNO is organizing a series of events discussing current trends in migration and their significance for humanitarian actors. \n\n\n\nGlobal trends in migration\n\n\n\nWhat are the expected developments in terms of migration globally? What will be the directions of movement? What does this mean for socio-economic development in different parts of the world? The third event in the series on migration and refugees will cover the topic of continuities and changes in migration and their social\, economic and demographic impact. \n\n\n\nThe topic will be introduced by Leo Lucassen\, professor of social history at Leiden university and the International Institute of Social History (Amsterdam) and specialized in the history of migration and integration\, who will be interviewed by journalist and host Bahram Sadeghi. After the interview\, there will be discussion\, with input from Anila Noor (New Women Connectors)\, Ton Huijzer (Independent consultant)\, and the audience. \n\n\n\nWe are happy to finally be able to organize real-life events again\, and invite you to join us in person for this interactive event. \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nTo sign up for this event\, please send an email (including your name and organizations) to: \n\n\n\nkuno@kuno-platform.nl

SUMMARY:Co-creation Workshop on the Implications of Climate Change for the Professional Practice of the Dutch Police
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this first co-creation workshop is to bring together police officers and trainers\, climate change experts and activists\, as well as academics to discuss more in-depth the nature of (current and future) challenges that climate change present for policing practice\, and how the Dutch Police can respond to them. The workshop is also designed to jointly identify the knowledge gaps that would need to be filled in order to develop effective police training programmes. It is hoped that this workshop will help researchers at THUAS to develop a successful funding application for a practice-oriented research project on this topic. Such a project would be both beneficial to practitioners as well as to educational and training programmes within and outside of THUAS. The workshop is thus also aimed at facilitating networking between the participants and identifying potential consortium partners. Please sign up (by September 9) using this link.

SUMMARY:Solidarity for Change: Building grassroots movements for justice
DESCRIPTION:From small partnerships to large-scale coalitions\, what is the role of grassroots activism for global justice? \n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nAround the world\, grassroots activists are coming together to call for an end to impunity\, and for justice and human rights to be respected. They challenge corrupt and powerful elites\, call for gender equality\, an environmental revolution and justice for serious crimes. \n\n\n\nWorking from the ground up\, they have enormous potential to catalyse systemic change in their own communities and globally. Not being held back by economic\, security or political interests\, they can point the way towards a better future\, one that is more just and equal. \n\n\n\nBut for change to happen\, these initiatives need our full solidarity\, especially as many activists are working in increasingly repressive environments. Building a larger community of solidarity around grassroots activism will increase the chances of overcoming crises and achieving lasting change. \n\n\n\nFrom Colombia to Syria\, this discussion will put to the fore the significance of movement building and activism for justice\, from small partnerships to large-scale coalitions. \n\n\n\nWith participation from the audience\, we’ll look at how we can all be part of and support local activism to address the root causes of impunity globally. \n\n\n\nProgramme: \n\n\n\n17:30 – Doors open18:00 – Panel discussion begins19:30 – Drinks and networking\n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\nAhmad Helmi – Co-founder of Ta’afi\, Syria. SUMMARY:Documentary Screening: A Tale of Two Starved Cities in Syria
DESCRIPTION:During the war in Syria many different civilian populations suffered. The documentary ‘A Tale of Two Starved Cities’ (2022) focuses on the siege of al-Fu’ah and Kefriya in Idlib province\, northern Syria near Aleppo. These towns were controlled by Syrian government forces. They had majority Shia populations. Syrian rebel groups besieged them for three years\, from 2015-2018. Thousands of civilians were trapped. Most humanitarian access was stopped. When they were evacuated their suffering did not cease. This film wants to show the effects of that siege on women and children\, and the issues that doctors and teachers living in those conditions witnessed. \n\n\n\nProgram: \n\n\n\nIntroduction: 16:00 – 16:15Screening of the Documentary: 16:15-16:45Panel Discussion: 16:45-17:15F&B: 17:15-17:45\n\n\n\nRegister here: http://icicl.org/details.asp?id=631
