SUMMARY:Conference: Global Transformations and Governance Challenges (GTGC)
DESCRIPTION:How are major world-scale changes in contemporary society governed? How might global matters such as geopolitical shifts\, ecological changes\, technological innovations\, and pandemics be better governed? SUMMARY:Roundtable: Writing a General Labour History of Africa from the 16th to the 19th centuries
DESCRIPTION:This event is organised in the framework of Africa 2020 (previously postponed due to Covid-19). \n\n\n\nInterest in the history of labour in Africa has experienced a rebirth after a long parenthesis of neglect.  African labour history research enlarged its scope\, characterized by a trend to analyse work beyond wage labour and to focus increasingly on different forms of labour relations\, from commodified forms of labour relations\, typical of the capitalist mode production\, to tributary and reciprocal forms of labour relations. \n\n\n\nA volume published in 2019\, General Labour History of Africa. Workers\, Employers and Governments: 20th and 21st Centuries This link opens in a new tab\, examines key transformations during the colonial and postcolonial periods and offers the first comprehensive study on labour in Africa within the framework of a global labour history perspective. \n\n\n\nNow another volume is under preparation\, under the auspices of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Regional Office for Africa\, which will cover the period from the 16th to the 19th centuries. In providing broad and differentiated perspectives on significant developments related to the history of African working people\, this new book project is designed to start a fresh discussion on African labour history. \n\n\n\nIn addition to seeking a gap in the literature\, another aim of the second volume of the General Labour History of Africa to encourage historical research on pre-1900 African labour history. The roundtable will present some of the central ideas of the book and discuss its potential and any possible new issues the lounge durée might raise. \n\n\n\nPractical:The meeting will take place in a hybrid form. Please register at y.s.b.noor@hum.leidenuniv.nl for both the event and the buffet before noon 3 June 2022 (limited seating: first come\, first serve).(FYI: the event might be video-recorded). \n\n\n\nZoomlink for online attendance:Join Zoom Meetinghttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/84588196076 This link opens in a new tabMeeting ID: 845 8819 6076  \n\n\n\nProgramme:Registration: 17:30-18:00 \n\n\n\nRoundtable and Q&A: 18:00-19:30 \n\n\n\nWelcome:– Ken Chamuva Shawa (ILO\, Regional Office for Africa\, Abidjan\, Ivory Coast)– David Ehrhardt (LeidenASA\, The Netherlands)Chair:– Stefano Bellucci (Leiden University and IISH Amsterdam)Presenters:– Andreas Eckert (Re:Work\, Humboldt University of Berlin\, Germany)– Filipa Ribeiro da Silva (International Institute of Social History\, Amsterdam\, The Netherlands)– Samuel Nyanchoga (Catholic University of Eastern Africa\, Kenya)– Katharina Oke (University of Graz\, Austria)\, tbc \n\n\n\nBuffet dinner and drinks: 19:30 onwards

SUMMARY:peace&justice café: The Future of Democracy (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Join us on June 23 as we turn our focus to democracy: where it stands\, where it’s going\, and what can be done to preserve it. \n\n\n\nDemocracy sits at a critical juncture. Independent monitors have noted that less than 20 percent of the world’s population now live in a ‘free’ country – the lowest level since 1995. From disinformation and political polarisation\, to rising authoritarianism and the erosion of public faith in institutions\, the current challenges to its resilience are myriad. Nonetheless\, the drive from civil society to protect it remains despite these troubling trends. \n\n\n\nAt this next edition of the peace&justice café\, explore how these changes in the landscape affect the work of the peace and justice ecosystem\, network with organisations playing a role in determining the future of democracy\, and come away with new connections\, insights\, and goals. \n\n\n\nIf you would like to share your experiences or have a suggestion of a great organisation you would like to see at this café\, please contact programming@humanityhub.net This link opens in a new tab.

SUMMARY:(Online) The Political Challenge of Migration: In Conversation with Tineke Strik
DESCRIPTION:In the coming decades\, supporting refugees\, internally displaced people (IDPs) and other migrants will likely demand a growing effort from humanitarian organizations. At the same time\, the topic of migration is increasingly being politicized\, placing humanitarian organizations in the middle of a political battle. This is why KUNO is organizing a series of events discussing current trends in migration and their significance for humanitarian actors. \n\n\n\nThe challenge of migration in European Politics\n\n\n\nWhat is new in the EU pact on migration and asylum? How does the EU deal with state-initiated violence against refugees in member states? What are the implications of bilateral deals with countries like Turkey\, Morocco and Libya? The second event of the series on migration and refugees will cover the topic of challenges that migration brings to the EU and how they are currently addressed. \n\n\n\nThe topic will be introduced by Tineke Strik\, Member of the European Parliament (Groen Links\, Greens) and former professor of migration law\, who will be interviewed by journalist and host Bahram Sadeghi. After the interview\, there will be discussion\, with input from Anila Noor (New Women Connectors)\, Ton Huijzer (Independent consultant)\, and the audience. \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual event that will take place via zoom.

DESCRIPTION:Regional human rights systems have often been at the forefront of relevant developments in the rights of indigenous peoples. These systems usually enjoy less institutional constraints than international criminal tribunals and are able to address violations from broader perspectives. This panel will consider how regional human rights mechanisms have approached claims of violations against Indigenous peoples’ rights. The panellists may discuss: \n\n\n\nHow do different human rights mechanisms approach the rights of indigenous peoples? What are their limitations and what can they achieve; The interplay – if any –  between regional human rights mechanisms and international criminal courts and tribunals in delivering justice to Indigenous peoples for violations which might amount to international crimes. What can international criminal justice learn from their experiences?\n\n\n\nModerator: Dr. Mamadou Hébie\, Associate Professor of International Law\, Leiden University \n\n\n\nSpeakers:  \n\n\n\nMs. Lucy Claridge\, Senior Counsel\, Head of Strategic Legal Response Centre\, Acting Coordinator Legal and Human Rights Programme (LHRP)\, Forest Peoples Programmes;Mr. Korir Sing’Oei Abraham\, Senior Partner\, SMS Advocates LLP.Judge Raúl Eduardo Sánchez Sánchez\, Judge\, Special Jurisidiction for Peace (JEP)

The conference will be webcast live in English\, French and Spanish on the ICC’s Youtube channel. While in-person participation at the conference is by invitation only\, virtual attendance is open to all interested persons. \n\n\n\nThe conference will be an occasion to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the International Criminal Court as one of the permanent pillars of the international legal system. The entry into force\, on 1 July 2002\, of the ICC’s founding treaty\, the Rome Statute\, enabled the commencement of the Court’s operations under its mandate aimed at ensuring accountability for the gravest crimes under international law\, contributing to their prevention\, and providing justice to victims. \n\n\n\nThe conference will start with a keynote speech by the Chair of Rome Conference and first ICC President\, H.E. Mr. Philippe Kirsch\, followed by three substantive panels on various aspects on the Court’s work. Speakers will include the President\, Prosecutor and Registrar of the ICC\, the President of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute\, the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the ICC’s Trust Fund for Victims\, the President of the International Criminal Court Bar Association\, as well leading academics\, civil society experts and practitioners. \n\n\n\nThe conference will allow for in-depth discussions on the different aspects of the Court’s concrete operations\, from the earliest reports of alleged crimes to final judgments and the reparation of victims. It will also be an occasion for reflections on how well the ICC has met expectations\, as well as what main trends can be discerned for the further development of the international criminal justice system going forward. \n\n\n\nProgramme of the conference  – English\, Français\, Español

SUMMARY:Summer School of 2022 - Conflict Resolution: How to Mediate?
DESCRIPTION:Whether it is Ukraine\, Israel\, Yemen\, or Afghanistan\, conflict is an undeniable part of the domain of international relations. Although the nature of conflict has changed to include different modes of warfare such as drones and private mercenaries\, the main questions surrounding conflict have remained the same\, namely ‘why does a conflict occur?’ and ‘what can be done to solve a given conflict?’. The latter question is where the role of international negotiation in the shape of mediation comes into view. In the words of William Zartman\, conflicts are ‘only ripe for resolution through mediation when a Mutually Hurting Stalemate is reached’. \n\n\n\n Diplomats play a key role in facilitating mediation sessions. But as we all know not every meeting is a success\, indicating that you cannot be a good mediator before becoming a good negotiator. So how do diplomats know when this so-called Mutually Hurting Stalemate is reached? And if so\, where do they meet and who should mediate? If you recognize yourself in these questions then this summer school might exactly be what you are looking for. \n\n\n\nThe program of 2022 includes speakers like Paul Meerts\, Hans van den Berg and practising diplomats. Students are offered the opportunity to expand their (international) network with networking sessions and practice their skills in a diplomatic simulation. In doing so\, participants represent a country or an international organisation\, prepare a position\, and negotiate an agreement.
