SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Palestine and the ICC Paralysis: Is Justice still Possible for Palestinians?
DESCRIPTION:Chair: Triestino Mariniello (Legal Team for Gaza Victims)  \n\n\n\nConfirmed speakers: \n\n\n\nRaji Sourani (Director – PCHR)Roger Waters (Musician and Co-Founder of Pink Floyd)Susan Akram (Professor – Boston University)Shawan Jabareen (General Director – Al-Haq)Delphine Carlens (Head International Justice Desk – FIDH)Issam Younis (Director of Al Mezan Center for Human Rights)\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter many years of endeavours to get access to justice\, Palestinian civil society and victims welcomed the Prosecutor’s announcement that there was sufficient evidence proving the commission of war crimes in the territory of Palestine. However\, seven years since the beginning of the preliminary investigation and more than a year after the opening of a full-fledged investigation\, no concrete steps have been taken by the Court to put an end to the ‘impunity crisis’ in the Israeli-Palestinian setting. While the ICC has recently proved that it is capable of a prompt reaction over serious and urgent situations\, the Office of the Prosecutor’s seeming reluctance to select cases in the Palestine situation gives rise to a serious concern about a practice of double standards. \n\n\n\nThe present event brings together Palestinian NGOs senior officers\, scholars\, and artists to shed light on the on-going perpetration of serious violations of Palestinians’ fundamental rights and publicly denounce the lack of effective measures taken by the Court in one of the most documented situations for the commission of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The public event aims to call upon all stakeholders to invite the Prosecutor to ensure that accountability in Palestine is pursued without any further delay. \n\n\n\nThe organization of this event has been financially supported by Bertha Foundation.

SUMMARY:(Online) Scenarios for the future: the impact of the war in Ukraine on global food security
DESCRIPTION:Humanitarian and development organizations feel an urgent need to better understand the potential impacts of the war in Ukraine on food security\, particularly in fragile and low-income countries. \n\n\n\nPreparing for possible scenarios\n\n\n\nWageningen University & Research\, in cooperation with KUNO\, the Netherlands Food Partnership and eight international NGOs\, has developed four possible scenarios that describe the potential impact of the Ukraine war on food security in fragile contexts. This was done with the aim to provide insights in the possible implications of the Ukraine war on the work of humanitarian and development organizations.  \n\n\n\nThese scenarios challenge us as organisations to anticipate and be proactive. Now\, due to the interconnectivity of the global food system\, this is especially urgent. This webinar will seek to address the questions: \n\n\n\nHow can humanitarian and development agents of change interpret these scenarios\, and what do we need to do now to be ready for these futures?Moving forward\, what can we do within our own mandates to steer toward the future we would like to see?\n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nSpeakers and building blocks:  \n\n\n\nPresentation of the scenarios and the reasoning behind it: Herman Brouwer & Just Dengerink (Centre for Development Innovation\, Wageningen University & Research). The relevance of the scenarios for humanitarian practice and development cooperation\, both from the Global North and Global South (speakers to be confirmed).Open discussion.\n\n\n\nThe webinar will be moderated by KUNO and NFP.

SUMMARY:(Online) A Conversation with Hugo Slim: Warfare\, Civilians and Humanitarians in the Twenty-First Century
DESCRIPTION:In his new book ‘Solferino 21: Warfare\, Civilians and Humanitarians in the Twenty-First Century’\, Hugo Slim looks at warfare and humanitarian aid as it is today and as it is likely to evolve in the next ten years. Slim argues that humanitarian aid has become increasingly ambitious\, complicated\, expensive and utopian\, and that humanitarians must adapt or risk failing on their core mission of saving lives. One key aspect of next generation warfare and the ways in which humanitarians may rise to the challenges facing us is the role of data and technology in crises. \n\n\n\nThe OCHA Centre for Humanitarian Data is hosting a conversation with Slim to unpack the key challenges he identifies in his book and explore how they relate to the way humanitarians can use data and technology to deliver better\, simpler aid to populations in crisis. \n\n\n\nThe conversation will explore the following questions: \n\n\n\nWhat are the trends shaping next generation warfare and how will these trends change the way civilians and humanitarians experience and respond to crises? How has the assessment of humanitarian need evolved and what are the implications for humanitarian response in an increasingly digitized world? What are the major ethical concerns around integrating new technology and data science (especially artificial intelligence and automation) into humanitarian action? How might humanitarians ensure meaningful ethical deliberation on the use of data and technology as they respond to increasingly complex crises?\n\n\n\nYour host is Stuart Campo\, Data Responsibility Lead at the Centre for Humanitarian Data.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sanctions as the Go-To-Tool: Do They Work and What Role For International Law?
DESCRIPTION:Spring Meeting Of The Royal Netherlands Society Of International Law \n\n\n\nAlready before the Russian aggression against Ukraine the stalemate in the UN SecurityCouncil increasingly led to a wave of unilateral sanctions. Economic sanctions may seem tohave become the instrument of choice to deal with international crises\, but the role of the UNSecurity Council has diminished.Prof. Peter van Bergeijk (Erasmus University) and Prof. Larissa van den Herik (LeidenUniversity) put the expanding sanctions practice into the perspectives of internationalrelations and international law.Do sanctions work at all? What drives their success and failure? Why is coordination ofsanctions so difficult? Should international law have a more prominent role in governingsanctions?Importantly\, although targeted sanctions remain very present on the sanctions’ menu\, thereis again a trend towards the recomprehensivation of sanctions\, a return to the morecomprehensive sanctions of before. What is the future of the sanction instrument? The speakers will each give a presentation of 20 minutes\, followed by the opportunity to askquestions and a discussion. \n\n\n\nDate and time: Tuesday 24 May 2022\, from 16.00-18.00Location: The Humanity Hub\, Fluwelen Burgwal 58\, 2511 CJ\, The Hague\, or online via Zoom \n\n\n\nRegistration: Please send an email to contact@knvir.org by 19 May 2022 indicating whetheryou would like to attend the meeting in person or online. If you are attending via Zoom\, thelink will be sent to the email you use for registration\, unless you indicate otherwise. \n\n\n\nFor questions\, please contact the Secretary via board@knvir.org.

SUMMARY:HagueTalks Event: Resilience. Stories of Women Standing Up for Justice
DESCRIPTION:Women and girls are at the forefront of transformative action for justice\, building a world that works better for everyone. Societies with higher levels of gender equality are also characterised by less deforestation and air pollution\, lower levels of conflict\, and improved health of communities. Despite this\, women remain underrepresented in decision-making\, and are often portrayed as passive victims of conflict and climate change rather than holders of diverse knowledge and skills. In this HagueTalks\, three women on the frontlines for justice will tell their personal stories of defending freedom of speech\, fighting climate in justice\, and tackling gender-based violence. \n\n\n\nThis HagueTalks event will take place during the Hague Justice Week 2022 This link opens in a new tab and is part of the World Justice Forum “offsite sessions” program. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \n\n\n\nCamila de la Fuente (Camdelafu) from Mexico will speak about online harassment. SUMMARY:Conference: Global Transformations and Governance Challenges (GTGC)
DESCRIPTION:How are major world-scale changes in contemporary society governed? How might global matters such as geopolitical shifts\, ecological changes\, technological innovations\, and pandemics be better governed? SUMMARY:Roundtable: Writing a General Labour History of Africa from the 16th to the 19th centuries
DESCRIPTION:This event is organised in the framework of Africa 2020 (previously postponed due to Covid-19). \n\n\n\nInterest in the history of labour in Africa has experienced a rebirth after a long parenthesis of neglect.  African labour history research enlarged its scope\, characterized by a trend to analyse work beyond wage labour and to focus increasingly on different forms of labour relations\, from commodified forms of labour relations\, typical of the capitalist mode production\, to tributary and reciprocal forms of labour relations. \n\n\n\nA volume published in 2019\, General Labour History of Africa. Workers\, Employers and Governments: 20th and 21st Centuries This link opens in a new tab\, examines key transformations during the colonial and postcolonial periods and offers the first comprehensive study on labour in Africa within the framework of a global labour history perspective. \n\n\n\nNow another volume is under preparation\, under the auspices of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Regional Office for Africa\, which will cover the period from the 16th to the 19th centuries. In providing broad and differentiated perspectives on significant developments related to the history of African working people\, this new book project is designed to start a fresh discussion on African labour history. \n\n\n\nIn addition to seeking a gap in the literature\, another aim of the second volume of the General Labour History of Africa to encourage historical research on pre-1900 African labour history. The roundtable will present some of the central ideas of the book and discuss its potential and any possible new issues the lounge durée might raise. \n\n\n\nPractical:The meeting will take place in a hybrid form. Please register at y.s.b.noor@hum.leidenuniv.nl for both the event and the buffet before noon 3 June 2022 (limited seating: first come\, first serve).(FYI: the event might be video-recorded). \n\n\n\nZoomlink for online attendance:Join Zoom Meetinghttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/84588196076 This link opens in a new tabMeeting ID: 845 8819 6076  \n\n\n\nProgramme:Registration: 17:30-18:00 \n\n\n\nRoundtable and Q&A: 18:00-19:30 \n\n\n\nWelcome:– Ken Chamuva Shawa (ILO\, Regional Office for Africa\, Abidjan\, Ivory Coast)– David Ehrhardt (LeidenASA\, The Netherlands)Chair:– Stefano Bellucci (Leiden University and IISH Amsterdam)Presenters:– Andreas Eckert (Re:Work\, Humboldt University of Berlin\, Germany)– Filipa Ribeiro da Silva (International Institute of Social History\, Amsterdam\, The Netherlands)– Samuel Nyanchoga (Catholic University of Eastern Africa\, Kenya)– Katharina Oke (University of Graz\, Austria)\, tbc \n\n\n\nBuffet dinner and drinks: 19:30 onwards

SUMMARY:peace&justice café: The Future of Democracy (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Join us on June 23 as we turn our focus to democracy: where it stands\, where it’s going\, and what can be done to preserve it. \n\n\n\nDemocracy sits at a critical juncture. Independent monitors have noted that less than 20 percent of the world’s population now live in a ‘free’ country – the lowest level since 1995. From disinformation and political polarisation\, to rising authoritarianism and the erosion of public faith in institutions\, the current challenges to its resilience are myriad. Nonetheless\, the drive from civil society to protect it remains despite these troubling trends. \n\n\n\nAt this next edition of the peace&justice café\, explore how these changes in the landscape affect the work of the peace and justice ecosystem\, network with organisations playing a role in determining the future of democracy\, and come away with new connections\, insights\, and goals. \n\n\n\nIf you would like to share your experiences or have a suggestion of a great organisation you would like to see at this café\, please contact programming@humanityhub.net This link opens in a new tab.

SUMMARY:(Online) The Political Challenge of Migration: In Conversation with Tineke Strik
DESCRIPTION:In the coming decades\, supporting refugees\, internally displaced people (IDPs) and other migrants will likely demand a growing effort from humanitarian organizations. At the same time\, the topic of migration is increasingly being politicized\, placing humanitarian organizations in the middle of a political battle. This is why KUNO is organizing a series of events discussing current trends in migration and their significance for humanitarian actors. \n\n\n\nThe challenge of migration in European Politics\n\n\n\nWhat is new in the EU pact on migration and asylum? The second event of the series on migration and refugees will cover the topic of challenges that migration brings to the EU and how they are currently addressed. \n\n\n\nThe topic will be introduced by Tineke Strik\, Member of the European Parliament (Groen Links\, Greens) and former professor of migration law\, who will be interviewed by journalist and host Bahram Sadeghi. After the interview\, there will be discussion\, with input from Anila Noor (New Women Connectors)\, Ton Huijzer (Independent consultant)\, and the audience. \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual event that will take place via zoom.
