SUMMARY:Launch Event: The North Korean Prison Database (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:A vast penal system stretches across North Korea. Hidden from the world\, industrial-grade violations of international law — from torture and widespread starvation to inhumane\, overcrowded\, and unsanitary conditions of detention — have led to catastrophic human consequences. \n\n\n\nUntil now\, little evidence from North Korea’s penal system had been gathered for the explicit purpose of holding accountable those implicated in crimes and violations. Rarer still was evidence that identified individual perpetrators and linked them to cases. \n\n\n\nIn the first phase of the most granular investigation ever conducted into North Korea’s penal system\, Korea Future has identified nearly 600 perpetrators linked to 5180 human rights violations committed against 785 detainees in 148 penal facilities. Join us as we share our findings\, explore prospects for accountability\, and release the North Korean Prison Database — an online archive of international law violations perpetrated across the North Korean penal system. \n\n\n\nNetworking and drinks to follow after the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will also be moderated by Professor Remko Breuker This link opens in a new tab\, a historian of Korea and Northeast Asia from Leiden University.

SUMMARY:Joe Biden-lecture by Willem Post
DESCRIPTION:These are extra-ordinary times. The 46th president presented at the start of his term an attractive domestic agenda. But like so many presidents in U.S. history\, once again a foreign policy crisis has ‘overtaken’ a president. The Russian invasion in Ukraine\, ‘Putin’s war’\,  transformed Biden’s presidency almost overnight. What are the consequenses for the U.S.\, Europe and the rest of the world? Is this indeed the birth of a new World Order? \n\n\n\nDutch historian Willem Post\, specialized in the U.S. presidency\, will share in English his thoughts with us on these and other urgent questions at an informal hamburger or vegaburger dinner session (including fries and salad) in International presscentre Nieuwspoort. Drinks could be ordered. \n\n\n\nConversation with Ivo van WijdevenIvo van de Wijdeven is historian and author. His book ‘De rafelranden van Europa’ (Europe’s frayed edges) is widely acclaimed. Especially these last months Ivo is a frequent guest in Dutch television- and radio programs because of his in-depth knowledge of Ukraine and Russia. Willem and Ivo will have a conversation on the current situation concerning Ukraine and the politics of president Putin. \n\n\n\nGeneral information:Time: April 5th from 18.30 hours till 20.00 hours. Doors open 18.00.Address: Lange Poten 102511 CL Den Haag (The Hague city centre)Tickets €29\,50 p.p. with a (vegetarian) burger\, fries and 2 drinks (beer/ wine / soft drink). For a Poorter (member of Nieuwspoort) a ticket is €28\,50 p.p. with a (vegetarian) burger\, fries and 2 drinks (beer/ wine / soft drink).

SUMMARY:(Online) SDG16+ in Peril: A call-to-action for safeguarding commitments to Peaceful\, Just and Inclusive Societies
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Namati\, the TAP Network\, the Civil Society Platform for Peacebuilding and Statebuilding (CSPPS)\, CIVICUS and the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC)  \n\n\n\nThis online interactive workshop\, hosted by the Namati\, the TAP Network\, CSPPS\, CIVICUS and GPPAC\, will explore various emerging issues around SDG16+\, to identify areas where amplified actions are needed to safeguard commitments for implementation and accountability of SDG16+ in 2022 from governments\, the international community and civil society alike. \n\n\n\nBackground \n\n\n\nSince the adoption of the 2030 Agenda in 2015\, progress towards SDG16+ has been slow and uneven – and in many cases backsliding. On top of this\, global trends and forces continue to work against peaceful\, just and inclusive societies\, with political will from governments fading\, closing civic space\, and exclusion on the rise. The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unique pressures on the world’s governing institutions\, presenting once-in-a-generation challenges for all\, while exacerbating existing global\, existential challenges. Additionally\, urgent and ongoing threats to peace and security and international law have emerged in recent weeks\, as exemplified by events in Ukraine and recent coups in West-Africa\, threatening to undermine any progress made towards the 2030 Agenda overall\, and pushing governments into investing more in militarization\, and less on delivering results to improve peoples’ lives. And with authoritarianism on the rise\, the 2030 Agenda commitments on inclusive\, responsive and participatory decision making\, along-with respect for access to information and fundamental freedoms have also assumed greater significance.

SUMMARY:(Online) Why International Policies Should Link Climate\, Gender And Conflict
DESCRIPTION:The climate crisis and the loss of biodiversity reinforce the context in which armed conflict can occur; crop failure\, water scarcity and pollution weigh on a society. The climate and biodiversity crises and related armed conflicts exacerbate existing gender inequalities. Conversely\, gender inequality\, whereby women\, men and gender non-conforming persons do not have equal access to food\, water\, and natural resources\, is also a root cause of armed conflict. \n\n\n\nThe nexus between the climate crisis\, conflict and gender requires a holistic perspective on foreign policy. It requires rethinking current (power) structures in policy making focusing on the viewpoint of people in vulnerable positions and the most marginalized\, yet also recognizing the powerful role women in all their diversity play in climate and security solutions. The only solution for robust climate-\, gender- and conflict policy coherence is having a Feminist Foreign Policy. \n\n\n\nDuring our interactive event our speakers will draw attention to the urgency of breaking the silos in international policies on climate\, gender and conflict. Speakers will include activists from the Global South\, representatives of INGOs and interventions from the Dutch Government. The second part of the session will require inputs from you\, the audience. This is where we explore how a Feminist Foreign Policy could support breaking silo thinking in international policies and enable sustainable change. \n\n\n\nProgramme \n\n\n\nIntroduction of the FFP Summit (CFFP) \n\n\n\nPart 1: Setting the scene on the nexus between climate crisis\, conflict and gender \n\n\n\n(panel discussion) \n\n\n\nAmr Abdo Mohamed\, Conflict Sensitivity Policy Advisor\, Oxfam Novib \n\n\n\nEmma Whitaker\, Peace and Conflict Advisor\, Mercy Corps \n\n\n\nTBC: Intervention by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs \n\n\n\nPart 2: Exploration: how can Feminist Foreign Policy support breaking the silos \n\n\n\n(interactive session with the audience and panelists) \n\n\n\nClosing: recap via graphic recording \n\n\n\nModerated by Dewi Keppy\, programme manager Gender & Sustainable Economy WO=MEN & Anika Snel\, political coordinator WO=MEN

SUMMARY:(Online) Crimes against humanity\, genocide\, and ecocide: Of rights\, responsibilities\, and international order
DESCRIPTION:On April 8\, 2022\, as part of the eighth annual Justice Stephen Breyer Lecture on International Law This link opens in a new tab\, Foreign Policy at Brookings will host Philippe Sands\, professor of law at University College London and Samuel and Judith Pisar visiting professor of law at Harvard Law School\, for a keynote address on rights\, responsibilities\, and international order. \n\n\n\nSands will explore the evolution of the rights of individuals and groups under international law\, from the introduction of the ideas of aggression\, crimes against humanity\, and genocide — introduced at the Nuremberg Trial\, in the autumn of 1945 — to the treatment of these issues in current times\, including ISIS and the Yazidis; the Rohingya in Myanmar; the Uighurs in China; and the Chagosians and the Chagos Archipelago. He will also address the current situation in Ukraine and touch on new ideas to extend the reach of international law to criminalize severe harm to the environment. \n\n\n\nAfter the keynote address\, Nonresident Senior Fellow Ted Piccone will join Sands for a conversation on the role of international law in prosecuting crimes against humanity\, genocide\, and ecocide. A panel discussion of distinguished experts on these issues will follow their conversation. \n\n\n\nViewers can submit questions by email to events@brookings.edu or on Twitter using #InternationalLaw.

SUMMARY:SPREEEK: Haagsch College: Try Out Revolusi: Een Levende Geschiedenis
DESCRIPTION:The Indonesian struggle for independence put an end to Dutch colonial rule in Asia. A history that still divides today. But what exactly happened there? And how did Indonesians experience their struggle for independence? \n\n\n\nThe Belgian historian and writer David Van Reybrouck conducted six years of research and spoke to the very last witnesses of this history in the Netherlands and Indonesia\, but also in Japan and Nepal. In his theater performance Revolusi: a living history David teaches us to look at the Dutch East Indies through different eyes. And he explains why an independent Indonesia changed the world forever. \n\n\n\nUsing beautiful images\, gripping stories and intriguing characters\, he shows how the Indonesian revolusi still lives on in our time. \n\n\n\nIn collaboration with: Montesquieu InstituutLocation: NieuwspoortDate and time: 11 April \, 19:30 – 21:15Main language: NederlandsTheme: Spreeek about Freedom

SUMMARY:The Trouble with Aid: Movie Afternoon
DESCRIPTION:During this movie afternoon\, we will watch the documentary ‘The trouble with aid‘. \n\n\n\nThe documentary film The Trouble with aid travels through the history of modern humanitarianism\, starting in the Biafran war in the late 1970s to move on to Ethiopia\, Rwanda\, Afghanistan\, and others. It shows some of the core dilemma’s humanitarians face\, and how these were dealt with in these different episodes\, some of which turned out to be game changers afterwards\, for policy\, norms and practices in humanitarian aid. The film gives a critical impression of a humanitarian sector where idealism frequently clashes with the everyday politics of crisis and disaster\, and its consequences. \n\n\n\nAfter the movie we will discuss the film to see how these complexities shape today’s humanitarian world and its dilemma’s and im/possibilities. Bram Jansen will lead the discussion. Bram is an anthropologist with the Sociology of Development and Change group (SDC) at Wageningen University. His teaching and research focuses on refugee- and humanitarian studies. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\n16:00 Short introduction and drinks \n\n\n\n16:15 Start movie \n\n\n\n17:15 Pizza break \n\n\n\n18:30 End movie\, short discussion \n\n\n\n19:00 Wrap up \n\n\n\nYou can sign up for this event by sending an email to:kuno@kuno-platform.nl \n\n\n\nLimited places available!

SUMMARY: Global Justice Cinema workshop
DESCRIPTION:Movies that Matter and Asser are pleased to present the Global Justice Cinema workshop on the 13-14 April 2022. \n\n\n\nBackgroundDocumentary film is a very powerful medium in the field of global justice. It can document human rights violations\, uncover abuses of power\, communicate a strong message of solidarity and call for action. But documentary filmmaking is never just a ‘neutral’ registration of reality. The Global Justice Cinema workshop challenges you to critically watch\, assess\, and discuss what these films communicate and how this is achieved. For this workshop\, the Asser Institute and VU Amsterdam This link opens in a new tab join forces with human rights film festival Movies that Matter. Therefore\, you can expect great lectures in film and international justice by professors at the Asser Institute and VU as well as a chance to enjoy the latest films addressing the complexities of international rights. SUMMARY:Expert meeting on Business and Human Rights Arbitration
DESCRIPTION:Since their launch in 2019 at the Peace Palace the Hague Rules on Business and Human Rights Arbitration (Hague Rules) have been acknowledged as a possible valuable contribution to the Remedy Pilar of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and served already as model for a range of sectoral business and human rights arbitration rules.  \n\n\n\nOn 12 April 2022\, the Asser Institute will host an expert meeting on business and human rights arbitration convened with the support of the Working Group on the Hague Rules (WG). \n\n\n\nThe main objective of the meeting is to bring together a wide range of key stakeholders to discuss the potential of arbitration in business and human rights disputes in a variety of constellations such as ad hoc direct business-rightsholder issues or in a contractual relations context\, the way in which such arbitration would need to be structured in terms of process and institutions\, as well as the mechanisms that would incentivize both corporations and rightsholders to have recourse to it.  \n\n\n\nThe meeting will be divided in three sessions. In the first\, the WG will provide a brief introduction to the background\, drafting process and salient aspects of the Hague Rules on Business and Human Rights Arbitration. In the second session\, a diverse set of invited speakers will share short reflections on the advantages and drawbacks of arbitration in the BHR context. In the final round-table\, the discussion will be focused on the implementation of the Hague Rules\, starting with a presentation from the WG members on the main achievements and challenges so far. It will be followed by an exchange of views with the invited participants on the future potential of the Hague Rules and their limits. \n\n\n\nAgenda of the meeting \n\n\n\n13:00 – Opening and introductions13:15 – The Hague Rules\, background\, drafting process and salient issues (Prof. Martijn Scheltema\, Prof. Jan Eijsbouts)13.45 – Round-table 1 – Business and Human Rights Arbitration: Pros and Cons15.15  Coffee Break15:45 – Round-table 2 – Towards the implementation of the Hague Rules: Opportunities and Challenges\n\n\n\nIf you wish to join the meeting\, please send an email to Dr. Antoine Duval (a.duval@asser.nl) explaining your motivation. External attendance will be in-person only.

SUMMARY:Symposium on ‘War\, Trauma and Art’
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with our exhibition ‘Art after Auschwitz’\, featuring the work of Boris Lurie and Wolf Vostell\, and the launch of the accompanying publication ‘Boris Lurie and Wolf Vostell | Art after the Shoah’ Kunstmuseum Den Haag is to host a symposium on ‘War\, Trauma and Art’ on Tuesday 26 April. The keynote speakers will be art historian Eckhart Gillen and author Arnon Grunberg. From the late 1950s onwards artists Boris Lurie and Wolf Vostell confronted their audiences with the horrors of the Shoah (the Hebrew word for the Holocaust)\, at a time when many people found it too difficult to talk about the war. Their view that art was not about beauty\, but about showing grim reality\, was entirely at odds with the spirit of the time. The war in Ukraine has made the question of how society should deal with atrocities\, war crimes and victims even more relevant. Every day we see countless pictures of the terrible situation there\, and yet daily life seems to go on as normal.  At the symposium art historians Eckhart Gillen and Daniel Koep will discuss the work of Boris Lurie and Wolf Vostell and their impact on the art world after the Second World War. We will also draw parallels with today’s world\, discussing with contemporary artists\, writers and academics the visualisation of war crimes\, trauma and injustice\, with reference to their own work and to the recent situation in Eastern Europe.

SUMMARY:Cartoon Exhibition: Just Speak!
DESCRIPTION:Justice for all can only be reached if we have the freedom to express ourselves in fair and peaceful communities that leave no one behind. A focus on justice is necessary in solving all conflicts. Images have the power to carry a message in a clever\, funny and informing way\, which is exactly what this exposition is about. Ideas about peace and justice from the youngest generation turned into professional cartoons\, created by human rights cartoonists from around the world. \n\n\n\nFrom Monday the 2nd of May until Thursday the 19th of May\, the Atrium in the City Hall hosts the exposition ‘Just speak!’ by The Next Movement. In its essence lies the voice of youth across the world. By means of a competition\, students across both The Hague and the world were asked about their ideas on how to achieve justice in a conflict in their part of the world. What are their thoughts on how to prevent or peacefully resolve this issue? Using their creativity to shape these ideas in the form of a cartoon\, their drawings were shared with the professional cartoonist network from The Next Movement. They chose the best\, most inspiring ideas and turned them into editorial cartoons. \n\n\n\nHague Justice Week \n\n\n\n This exposition is part of the Hague Justice Week 2022\, which takes place from the 30th of May until the 3rd of June. Global peace and justice require global collaboration. During The Hague Justice Week\, actors of all levels come together\, interact and try to find answers to global challenges through the scope of justice. \n\n\n\nVisit the ‘Just speak!’ exposition to see the voice of youth across the world!
