SUMMARY:Opportunities for Iraq: An online event
DESCRIPTION:NIMD has teamed up with Het Grote Midden Oosten Platform This link opens in a new tab to organize a discussion on the future of Iraq. The event will be held online in Dutch at 4-5.30pm (CEST) on 8 June. \n\n\n\nSince 2019\, Iraq’s streets have regularly filled with protesters. In the capital\, Baghdad\, but also in the southern Basra and in northern cities\, young people in particular are calling on politicians to implement political reforms. And to commit to jobs and better services to citizens. \n\n\n\nHow can the Netherlands contribute to democracy in Iraq\, and support these young people so that they know they are not alone? \n\n\n\nOn 8 June\, we’ll team up with experts and Dutch politicians to explore. \n\n\n\nThe programme\n\n\n\nThe role of the UN cannot be overlooked in any conversation about Iraq. That is why we are pleased that UN envoy Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert This link opens in a new tab will join us. She will address the challenges faced by the United Nations Mission in Iraq This link opens in a new tab (UNAMI)\, and reflect on the opportunities for reform. \n\n\n\nOur second guest speaker\, Arabist and lawyer Laila al-Zwaini This link opens in a new tab\, believes enormously in the strength of young people in Iraq. She sees a growing civil movement starting to emerge amidst all the chaos and violence. The Arabic word for civil is ‘madaniya‘ and this concept\, which is rooted in cultural values and traditions\, could guide these groups as they build their homeland. \n\n\n\nThe meeting will be introduced by Erwin van Veen This link opens in a new tab (Clingendael This link opens in a new tab). He will provide an analysis of the political\, economic and social developments in Iraq affecting the transition. Dutch MP Ruben Brekelmans This link opens in a new tab (VVD This link opens in a new tab party) and MEP Thijs Reuten This link opens in a new tab (PvDA This link opens in a new tab) will also share their view of Iraq’s future. \n\n\n\nThe event will be moderated by independent advisor and editor\, Mark Snijder. This link opens in a new tab \n\n\n\nFollow the discussion\n\n\n\nThe event will be in Dutch. You can join via livestream.  \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:The Virus and Violence
DESCRIPTION:Background \n\n\n\nWell into the second year of the deadliest pandemic in a century\, a growing number of studies have sought to unpack the link between COVID-19 and conflict. However\, those studies tend to either rely on anecdotal evidence\, or they systematically focus on one outcome only: violence. Yet\, we know that the effects of exogenous shocks like a pandemic on conflict can take time to develop and may not be reflected in immediate surges in violence. At least some of the causal mechanisms between COVID-19 and violent conflict\, if they exist at all\, are most likely indirect. Factors such as socio-economic marginalization\, diminished state capacity\, and an erosion of social cohesion potentially serve as key mediating factors that develop gradually or initially operate latently. In other words\, we must consider the potential impact of the pandemic on conflict drivers and processes\, not just outcomes such as violence. \n\n\n\nTo account for the possible effects of COVID-19 on overall conflict dynamics\, Mercy Corps has led research using a systems-level approach in three conflict-affected countries: Afghanistan\, Colombia\, and Nigeria. A more holistic assessment of the pandemic’s impact thus far will help to not only anticipate changes in conflict dynamics and identify leverage points for humanitarian\, development\, and peacebuilding interventions\, but also flag vulnerabilities for further disease spread and the factors that help and hinder public health responses\, including vaccination campaigns. \n\n\n\nIn an online webinar hosted by the Knowledge Platform for Security and Rule of Law\, two of Mercy Corps researchers who led this study will present its findings\, as well as discuss its implications for future policy and programming. \n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\nGabrielle Aron\, Research Project Lead\, Mercy CorpsSheilla Uzor Onasanya\, Strategic Learning Manager\, Mercy Corps NigeriaDutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) representative\n\n\n\nRegistration \n\n\n\nRegistration is mandatory to attend this event. SUMMARY:The decolonization of aid #3: a conversation from a humanitarian perspective
DESCRIPTION:The series\n\n\n\nWith the  #BLM debates\, and other anti-racism protests\, the discussion about the decolonization of aid got an impulse. Blogs\, panel discussions (sometimes very heated) and Tweets stumbled over one another. We witnessed many statements and opinions\, but perhaps not so much common ground to proceed from. \n\n\n\nKUNO\, Partos\, and The Institute of Social Studies (ISS) we take one step back and approach the discussion in a series of talks. Step by step\, we highlight an aspect of this debate. We ask two experts to engage in a conversation with one another to explore the controversies and perhaps find some common grounds. \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nTammam Aloudat\, Senior Strategic Advisor\, MSF Access Campaign.Nanette Antequisa\, director ECOWEB and active member of A4EP.\n\n\n\nAll dialogues in this series will be moderated by: \n\n\n\nKiza Magendane\, The Broker\, knowledge broker\, essayist and writer\, andThea Hilhorst\, professor Humanitarian Aid at the International Institute of Social Studies\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Community Programming Board
DESCRIPTION:The CPB was created to advise the Hub on developing the community and ensure that the Hub programming is of value to both the community and ecosystem by identifying and creating opportunities to connect and collaborate. After experimenting with this in 2020 we would like to bring it to the next level this year. We will also be inviting new members to constitute a cross section of the community with about 12 people. SUMMARY:P2P Communication Coffee - Magic of Complexity: How to embrace it?
DESCRIPTION:Crafting compelling narratives for action\, trust building\, and momentum while embracing complexity poses challenges to organisations\, small or large. SUMMARY:[Online summer workshop] International public interest advocacy
DESCRIPTION:From 5-7 July 2021\, T.M.C. Asser Instituut is organising and hosting a three-day online workshop on international public interest advocacy. \n\n\n\nAdvocating for public interests involves many challenges in the field of international law\, from developing strategic litigation\, to choosing and identifying funding opportunities\, to taking on a cause. Taking on this work also means taking on risk\, and calls for critical reflection. Working as a lawyer on behalf of public interests in the international arena is a developing field\, and sustaining that work requires skills\, knowledge\, and a good network. \n\n\n\nLearn the latest practices from leading practitioners and experts. Get exposed to new actions and ways of advocating for public interests internationally\, including strategic litigation. Be introduced to the latest innovations in law and technology for public interests around the world. Learn about successful initiatives – and about unsuccessful ones. Develop your network in a three-day workshop that will challenge you to think differently about the issues of the day and what we can do about them. With leading figures in the world of international public interest advocacy – from the Public Interest Litigation Project\, Greenpeace\, SOMO\, Human Rights in Practice\, the Global Legal Action Network\, and more – explore the possibilities with pioneers in the field. \n\n\n\nRead the programme here.BackgroundPractices for public interest advocacy face many challenges in the field of international law\, from developing strategic litigation to choosing and identifying funding opportunities to taking on a cause. SUMMARY:16th EADI General Conference: Solidarity\, Peace and Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:The European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI) and the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) EADI General Conference will take place entirely online. \n\n\n\nEven in this virtual format\, the conference will be a very special event. It will benefit from the virtual hospitality of ISS\, one of Europe’s oldest and largest centres for research and education in the field of development studies. \n\n\n\nThe conference will be combined with the Development Dialogue\, the annual European conference of PhD candidates working in development studies. \n\n\n\nAbout the conference\n\n\n\nThe central theme of the conference is ‘Solidarity\, Peace and Social Justice’. Together\, these three concepts represent the organization’s aspirations for approaches to global development that address inequality\, poverty and political marginalization\, also in connection with climate change and other environmental threats.  \n\n\n\nSolidarity is essential for any process of social change. Based on mutually shared interests and human values\, solidarity can be extremely powerful yet can also be easily undermined in an era of fake news and (electronically) manipulated elections.  \n\n\n\nPeace and social justice are similarly important values in (as well as aspired outcomes of) struggles or transformation processes in which solidarity is key. \n\n\n\nThe conference will be hosted by the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS)\, one of Europe’s oldest and largest centres for research and education in the field of development studies. It will be combined with the Development Dialogue\, the annual European conference of PhD candidates working in development studies. \n\n\n\n\nMORE INFORMATION & REGISTRATION

SUMMARY:P2P Facilitation: Activating different types of participants
DESCRIPTION:Lea Scheurer\, from EUKN\, will be hosting the upcoming session\, on ‘Activating different types of participants‘. \n\n\n\nOnline meetings have become the ‘new normal’. Even though they might not be as exciting as on-site ones\, they are surely one: more accessible\, allowing\, in principle\, a bigger and more diverse audience to participate. But some things remain the same: people differ; some are more outgoing while others prefer remaining in the background. Successful (meeting) facilitation requires acknowledging the diversity of audiences\, but also making sure to activate participants in an inclusive way. \n\n\n\nThe session will revolve around these guiding questions\, based on which a meaningful exchange can be built: \n\n\n\nWhat are your experiences regarding the participation/activation of different types of participants? What are the approaches and ‘tricks’ that have worked well in this regard? In what way has online conferencing affected all this?\n\n\n\nPlease drop a line to programming@humanityhub.net if you want to join! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNote: This event is for Hub members only.

Asser Instituut and ICCT in The Hague will host the eleventh Advanced summer programme on terrorism\, counter-terrorism and the rule of law. In this thought-provoking summer training you will learn all there is to learn on the international and domestic legal aspects of counter-terrorism\, in inspiring and interactive classes by international top speakers in the field. Sign up now. \n\n\n\nOverviewDespite a temporary respite in violent activities\, terrorism remains a significant and serious threat in many countries across the globe. As states’ resources have been stretched by the global COVID-19 pandemic\, terrorist organisations have sought to exploit the reduced public attention on their activities to strengthen their base and fuel divisions. In North America\, Western Europe and Oceania\, the threat of far-right political terrorism has been steadily rising\, with an increase in far-right incidents of 250 percent between 2014-2019 (Global Terrorism Index 2020). \n\n\n\nAlthough ISIL has been less active\, 27 countries in the Middle East and North Africa recorded an attack by ISIL or by its affiliate groups\, with Sub-Saharan Africa having been hit the hardest. Within the EU\, ten people died and 27 were injured following terrorist attacks\, and more than a thousand individuals were arrested on suspicion of terrorism-related offences. A further 119 ‘foiled\, failed and completed’ terrorist attacks were reported by 13 EU member states (Europol). \n\n\n\nAcross the world\, extremist and terrorist activities have continuously triggered an increase in security-related laws and measures. To prevent terrorism as early as possible\, states have introduced limitations on freedom of speech\, curbs on financial and other support and have resorted to revoking nationalities. \n\n\n\nHow proportionate and legitimate are these measures? Are they effective? \n\n\n\nAbout the programmeThe 11th version of our renowned summer programme will bring you inspiring and thought-provoking lectures by leading experts in the field\, interactive sessions\, virtual study visits\, group discussions (Chatham House Rules)\, panel presentations and a great\, global network in the field. \n\n\n\n\nMORE INFO
