SUMMARY:ISS Leadership Programme
DESCRIPTION:Lead with impact in a changing global landscape\nGlobal challenges are becoming more complex\, while funding and support for international cooperation are increasingly under pressure. This raises urgent questions for organizations working in development: how do you prepare for an uncertain future\, and how can you effectively integrate the latest social science insights into your policies and programmes? \nThis executive leadership programme is designed to help you navigate that complexity and strengthen your organisation’s impact in a rapidly changing world. \nAbout the programme\nThe programme starts on Tuesday\, 1 September 2026 at 15:00 and runs until the final session on 15 December 2026. It consists of eight sessions delivered in a hybrid format\, allowing participants to combine in-person and online learning. \nThe ISS Leadership Programme includes four face-to-face workshops in The Hague\, each lasting 2.5 hours\, alongside four online sessions of 1.5 hours. While in-person participation is encouraged\, all sessions can also be attended digitally\, making full remote participation possible. \nWith a group size of 15 to 20 participants\, the programme offers an interactive and focused learning environment for senior professionals from across the international development sector. \nDeveloped as part of the ISS Leadership Programme and in close collaboration with the Hague Humanitarian Studies Centre\, the course connects key themes such as resilience\, risk\, vulnerability\, and sustainable development. Participants are encouraged to translate insights directly into action within their own organisations. \nWho should attend\nThis course is aimed at experienced professionals with at least ten years of experience in international development. It is particularly relevant for managers\, leaders\, strategists\, monitoring and evaluation specialists\, and business developers. \nParticipants typically come from donor agencies\, international NGOs\, think tanks\, philanthropic foundations\, development consultancies\, and international development banks. The programme is also well suited for directors\, board members\, and management teams looking to strengthen their strategic leadership. \nWhat you will gain\nThroughout the programme\, you will develop the knowledge\, skills\, and mindset needed to increase your organization’s impact. You will learn how to move beyond linear approaches and adopt more adaptive forms of programming\, drawing on complexity thinking to better address real-world challenges. You will gain insights into how development efforts can be strengthened by anticipating future risks and enhancing societal resilience\, while also learning from best practices across organizations. \nIn addition\, the programme focuses on practical skill-building. You will learn how to identify blind spots within your organization\, engage constructively with donors and investors\, and create safe and inclusive work environments where innovation is encouraged. \nOn a personal level\, the programme supports your development as a leader. It helps you build the confidence and creativity needed to challenge existing structures and to foster a more open and learning-oriented organizational culture. \nLearning experience\nThe learning experience is highly interactive and designed to encourage exchange between participants. You will work in a small group setting that offers space for reflection\, discussion\, and peer learning. Participants are invited to bring a colleague to one of the sessions\, and those joining from abroad can take part in an additional online intervision session at no extra cost. \nBeyond the sessions themselves\, you will become part of a dynamic network of peers and gain access to the ISS alumni community. \nPractical details\nEach session requires approximately two hours of preparation. All teaching materials are included in the programme\, and upon completion you will receive a certificate from the International Institute of Social Studies. The course fee is €2\,450. \nCourse materials\nAs part of the programme\, you will receive the book Foreign Aid and its Unintended Consequences by Professor Dirk-Jan Koch\, published by Routledge in 2024. This book is included in the course fee and will be sent to you by post upon acceptance. \nIn addition\, you will have access to a series of knowledge video clips that you can watch at your own pace in preparation for the sessions. \n	Apply now!

SUMMARY:Democracy Health Check: Presenting the Tyranny Tracker
DESCRIPTION:The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) is presenting its recently launched Tyranny Tracker in The Hague\, Netherlands. \nDeveloped by HRF with support from The Reynolds Foundation\, the Tyranny Tracker is an index that classifies political regimes using a unique methodology that evaluates indicators across three key pillars: electoral competition\, freedom of dissent\, and institutional accountability. The index classifies the world’s countries and territories as democratic\, hybrid authoritarian\, or fully authoritarian\, providing a unique view of democracy globally. \nThis event will explore the Tyranny Tracker and feature a keynote address from Swazi Activist and Widow of Thulani Maseko\, Tanele Maseko. The full agenda is available below: \nOpening remarks: Stephanie Triefus (Asser Institute)\nKeynote: Tanele Maseko (Swazi Activist and Widow of Thulani Maseko)\nPresentation of the Tyranny Tracker: Javier El-Hage (HRF Chief Legal and Policy Officer)\nPanel Discussion:\nMohamed Keita (HRF Senior Policy Officer for Africa);\nZara Rancheva (HRF Research Fellow for Europe and Central Asia);\nAlan Haji (Legal Director at the Syria Justice and Accountability Centre);\nMalaak Jamal (Director of Policy and Research)[Moderator] Stephanie Triefus (Asser Institute);\nMore about the Tyranny Tracker\nThe Human Rights Foundation (HRF) launched its flagship research project\, the Tyranny Tracker\, a qualitative index that classifies the world’s countries and territories as democratic\, hybrid authoritarian\, or fully authoritarian. This political regime assessment tool is now available to the public at a moment when tyranny is on the rise worldwide. \nAccording to HRF’s Tyranny Tracker\, 76% of the world’s population lives under authoritarianism\, representing 102 countries and territories\, or 6.3 billion people — a number that is partly explained by the hybrid authoritarian regimes of India\, Indonesia\, Pakistan\, and the Philippines\, and by the fully authoritarian regimes of China\, Ethiopia\, Nigeria\, Russia\, and Vietnam\, which rule over some of the world’s most populous countries. \nThe Tyranny Tracker classifies countries using a methodology consisting of 45 indicators categorised into three thematic pillars: electoral competition\, freedom of dissent\, and institutional accountability. The methodology is informed by academic literature and HRF’s 20 years of experience advocating on behalf of dissidents from countries ruled by authoritarian regimes. The research draws on a range of sources\, including media\, data collected by HRF’s in-house research team\, an extensive human rights network\, and expert advice. \n	Register now This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:The Stories We Don’t Hear: Human Voices in Times of Crisis
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, 14 October\, the Netherlands Red Cross invites you to The Stories We Don’t Hear: Human Voices in Times of Crisis\, an evening about personal stories behind the crisis in Sudan. Through a documentary\, a panel discussion and a photo exhibition we explore how Sudanese experience a crisis many of us think we already know\, and the role their stories can play in shaping humanitarian action. \nSudan is facing one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises\, yet it receives little international attention. For more than three years\, people in Sudan have been living through a devastating conflict. Many have lost their homes\, loved ones and sense of safety. The realities of this conflict are often reduced to facts and numbers\, leaving out people’s personal stories. \nBut what if we listened to those living through this crisis\, not as distant strangers\, but as people who share many of the same hopes\, anxieties\, dreams and daily realities as we do? \nBecause who can better tell these stories of the daily realities than the people living them every day? \nIn the documentary 10 Times 74: Stories of Sudanese Who Choose to Multiply What They Have\, filmmaker Hassan Kamil captures his home country Sudan through conversations with fellow Sudanese. This documentary focuses on their stories. Stories that\, perhaps unexpectedly\, are not only about fear and suffering. They’re stories of strength. Of community. Of humanity. Hassan meets people who make a change. People who gather to help others\, to foster connection\, and to spread hope in a time where beauty is still there\, even though it’s sometimes hard to see. \nOn Wednesday\, 14 October\, we use this documentary as a starting point for a conversation about Sudan\, and about the stories we tell about crisis. During a panel discussion\, filmmaker Hassan Kamil\, Dutch diplomat for Sudan Floris te Velde and SudanConnect volunteer Leya Schoonderwoerd will reflect on the conflict\, the way it is portrayed internationally\, and what changes when people affected by crisis tell their own stories. \nThe evening concludes with a photo exhibition bringing together personal stories from Sudan\, Mali\, Liberia and Botswana. Through photographs and intimate WhatsApp conversations with volunteers and community members\, you are invited into moments of everyday life that may feel both unfamiliar and surprisingly recognisable. \nAnd we hope that\, after this evening\, these stories continue to multiply. When sharing with others\, we can let the stories live onwards and change the dominant narrative little by little. \nFollowing the event\, participants will be invited to walk to the Atrium City Hall\, adjacent to the library\, for the official opening of the exhibition. \nDoors open at 17:15\, with drinks and substantial bites served before the programme begins. The formal programme takes place from 18:00 to 19:35 in the Haagse Lobby\, followed by the official opening of the exhibition in the Atrium at approximately 19:45. \n	View the full programme here This link opens in a new tab\n	\n	Reserve your spot This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:WORKSHOP SCHIJNSZELFSTANDIGHEID
This link opens in a new tab

Some people move temporarily and return to their homes and livelihoods\, while others cannot go back and move within countries or across borders in search of safety. \nIt is thus time to make a plan to build resilience for those adapting to climate\, take action in providing support to people migrating across borders and recognising the challenges of climate-related displacement within countries. \nIn this roundtable\, speakers and panellists will consider potential avenues of action to help adapt and prepare for climate-related displacement\, including working with host communities to reduce risks for both newcomers and improving adaptation strategies for existing residents. \nExamples will be explored from Bangladesh and elsewhere. \nSpeakers\nWelcome: Professor Ruard GanzevoortOpens external\, ISS Rector\nScene-setting: Hyeonggeun JiOpens external\, Researcher\, HSC-ISS\nJoint action 1: Paul van de LogtOpens external\, Head of Climate\, Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs\nJoint action 2: Kevin Playford\,Opens external Deputy Head of Mission\, Embassy of Australia in the Netherlands\nRoundtable discussion moderated by Professor Thea HilhorstOpens external\, HSC Director and featuringProfessor Joyeeta GuptaOpens external\, UvA\nDr Bishawjit Mallik\,Opens external University of Utrecht\nJoep Verhagen\,Opens external Director Global Centre on Adaptation\nDr Rodrigo Mena\,Opens external Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Association\nClosing by H.E. SUMMARY:Community Drinks: Voices & Visibility: Who gets heard in a crowded world?
DESCRIPTION:Connect\, share & learn about what different organisations are doing to make the world more peaceful and sustainable at the Community Drinks \nWhat if your next game-changing connection is just a drink away?\nJoin us for Community Drinks to wind down around a glass\, make new connections\, and get inspired by the spotlights of the evening. Hosted at The Hague Humanity Hub\, this is the place for you to get away from your busy schedule and enjoy after-hours with purposeful conversations. \nWhat can you expect?\nJoin the Community Drinks on Voices & Visibility: Who gets heard is a crowded world? from 17:30 to 19:00 for an evening of conversation\, reflection\, and connection around a question that sits at the heart of much of the peace and justice work happening in The Hague: who gets heard? \nIn a world with more voices\, stories\, crises\, and competing priorities than ever before\, being heard is not simply about having something to say. It is also about having access to the spaces\, platforms\, resources\, and decision-making processes that determine what receives attention. Thus\, questions like: Who gets invited into the room? Whose knowledge is considered credible? Who gets to tell the story? And why do some crises receive more attention\, resources\, and political response than others? Are deeply connected. \nWe will explore questions such as: \nWhat does it mean to have a voice and once someone has a voice\, who gets to tell their story and who controls the narrative?\nWhy do some crises receive significant media\, political\, and humanitarian attention while others remain largely invisible?\nAnd finally\, how can organisations ensure that local knowledge and lived experience genuinely shape decisions?\nThrough short speaker spotlights and an open discussion\, the evening will create space to exchange experiences\, challenge assumptions\, and consider how we can create more meaningful spaces for voices that are too often overlooked. \nWho are the speakers?\nThis edition of Community Drinks\, “Voices and Visibility: Who gets heard in a crowded world?” brings together different perspectives from across The Hague’s peace and justice ecosystem to explore three interconnected questions: \nThe speakers for this edition will be announced shortly before the event. We are bringing together complementary perspectives from across the peace and justice ecosystem\, exploring the relationship between voice\, power\, storytelling\, representation\, and visibility. \nRather than approaching the topic from a single discipline\, the conversation will connect experiences from different parts of the ecosystem and invite participants to reflect on how the decisions we make about who we listen to\, whose stories we share\, and what we choose to highlight are shaped and can shape what the international community ultimately understands and acts upon. \nWho is it for?\nIf you are interested in connecting with people and their work towards a more peaceful\, just and sustainable world\, this event is for you. Whatever your role or sector\, join Community Drinks to relax\, exchange perspectives\, and connect with this vibrant community committed to making the world more peaceful\, just and sustainable\, one conversation at a time. \nCome ready to share your perspective\, meet others working across the ecosystem\, and explore what it really takes to be heard—and listen to. \nPrivacy Policy\nThe Humanity Hub collects your name\, email\, and organization (if you have one) when you sign up for events\, so they can manage the event and tell you about future ones. SUMMARY:#DemocracyDrinks: Political Developments in the Western Balkans
DESCRIPTION:Serbia’s elections and mass protests in Albania are raising new questions about the political direction of the Western Balkans. In Serbia\, elections could reshape the country’s political landscape\, while in Albania\, growing public mobilization is putting pressure on the government and raising questions about its political future. \nThis edition of #DemocracyDrinks looks at whether these developments could lead to a broader political shake-up in the region\, and what they could mean for democracy\, political stability\, and the EU integration of both countries. \nTogether with PRO International\, NSDE\, NHC\, PAX and the Albanians in the NL Foundation\, we will discuss these developments and what they tell us about the future of the Western Balkans. Speakers will be announced soon. Bring your questions! \nWhat are the #DemocracyDrinks? \n#DemocracyDrinks is an informal\, recurring conversation and networking series bringing together people working on democracy\, peace\, justice\, and democratic participation. \nThe format is intentionally simple: open\, dialogue-led conversations in a relaxed setting. #DemocracyDrinks The Hague provides space to connect across sectors\, test ideas\, explore emerging questions\, and reflect collectively on democratic challenges beyond formal panels or presentations. \nLaunched by Defend Democracy in Brussels in 2018\, #DemocracyDrinks now takes place in cities around the world. Editions in The Hague have brought together a diverse mix of practitioners from NGOs\, international institutions\, think tanks\, government\, and civil society. The Hague series is co-organised by the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC)\, the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD)\, and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH). \nInterested in hosting your own edition? SUMMARY:Extraction and Empires: A history that hasn't ended
DESCRIPTION:This event is part 1 of a 3-part Studium Generale program series organised between Leiden University and the Humanity Hub. On three Wednesday evenings we bring together academics and practitioners\, and delve into the world of critical raw materials. \nHow did resource extraction build empires\, and how much has really changed since? \nIn this opening session of our three-part series on critical raw materials\, Prof. dr. Catía Antunes (Leiden University) traces the long history of how empires sustained themselves through the extraction of resources\, drawing on striking examples across the centuries. She  connects that past to the present\, showing how little the underlying logic of extraction has shifted\, and how similar patterns are still visible now that the world races for the critical minerals that power the energy transition. \nFollowing the keynote\, Antunes is joined by Marius Troost (Both ENDS) for a panel discussion on the injustices bound up in the extraction of critical raw materials today: who bears responsibility for them\, and how NGOs and other actors can best aim their efforts to have the greatest impact. The panel will be moderated by Brian Jacobs. \nAfterwards there is time for drinks and a networking reception. \n🗓 Wednesday 28 October\n🕠17:30 – 19:00\n📍The Humanity Hub\, Fluwelen Burgwal 58\, Den Haag \nAttendence is free\, please sign-up in advance. \n	Register This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Environmental Harm as an International Crime
DESCRIPTION:Explore how international law\, ecocide and visual storytelling can advance accountability for serious environmental destruction.\nWhat happens when environmental destruction is so severe that regulation\, compensation or civil litigation no longer seem enough? When should those responsible be held personally accountable—and could serious harm to the environment be treated as an international crime? \nFrom pollution and extractive industries to the destruction of ecosystems during armed conflict\, environmental harm can have devastating and long-lasting consequences for communities\, livelihoods and future generations. Yet international criminal law remains one of the least-used tools for addressing these harms. \nThis event\, organised by The Promise Institute for Human Rights\, Art Works Projects and The Hague Humanity Hub\, brings together photographers\, lawyers\, advocates and climate justice actors to explore how this may be changing. \nThe evening begins with the work of Oyewole Lawal and Edwin Ndeke\, Emerging Lens Fellows whose photography documents environmental degradation and its consequences for the people and communities living with it. Their work provides a human and visual starting point for a wider conversation about environmental destruction\, responsibility and justice. \nFrom there\, we turn to the law. International criminal law already provides some possibilities for addressing serious environmental harm through existing crimes\, including war crimes and crimes against humanity. At the same time\, a growing international movement is working to establish ecocide as a new international crime\, creating a clearer legal route for addressing severe and widespread or long-term environmental destruction. \nRecent developments are bringing these questions closer to legal practice. In December 2025\, the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court published its Policy on Addressing Environmental Damage Through the Rome Statute\, setting out how environmental damage can be considered within the ICC’s existing mandate. The Promise Institute for Human Rights at UCLA and Climate Counsel have also developed a Manual on Prosecuting International Environmental Crimes\, drawing in part on experience investigating the environmental consequences of the war in Ukraine. \nTogether\, these developments raise an important question: what would it take to move from recognising environmental destruction as an injustice to investigating and prosecuting it as a crime? \nSpeakers\nOyewole Lawal — Photojournalist\, sociologist and Emerging Lens Fellow\, whose work explores the relationship between people\, communities and their environment. \nEdwin Ndeke — Photojournalist\, documentary photographer and Emerging Lens Fellow documenting social\, economic and environmental issues. \nReinhold Gallmetzer — Appeals Counsel and Environmental Crimes Focal Point at the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court\, speaking about the ICC Prosecutor’s Policy on Addressing Environmental Damage Through the Rome Statute and the possibilities and limits of the ICC’s current mandate. \nKate Mackintosh — Executive Director of The Promise Institute for Human Rights Europe\, co-author of the Manual on Prosecuting International Environmental Crimes and member of the Independent Expert Panel for the Legal Definition of Ecocide. \nMore speakers will be announced soon! \nOur speakers will explore what international criminal law can already do\, where its limitations lie\, and what recognising ecocide as an international crime could add. \nWe will look at questions including: \nWhen can serious environmental harm already amount to an international crime?\nWhat does criminal law offer that environmental and climate litigation does not—and where do other legal strategies remain essential?\nHow can environmental destruction be documented and evidenced in ways that can support future investigations and prosecutions?\nHow does applying existing international criminal law relate to the campaign to criminalise ecocide?\nWhat roles can lawyers\, investigators\, journalists\, photographers\, civil society organisations and climate advocates play in bringing the first cases forward?\nThe discussion will connect legal developments in The Hague with experiences and environmental harms occurring around the world\, including the particular relevance of the ecocide debate for African countries facing the consequences of extraction\, pollution and environmental degradation. \nProgramme \n17:00–17:30Doors open\, registration and welcome \n17:30–17:40Opening and introduction \n17:40–18:00Visual introduction: Emerging Lens photographers introduce selected work and the environmental harms documented \n18:00–18:45Panel conversation: Environmental Harm as an International Crime – existing legal tools\, environmental crimes and ecocide \n18:45–19:00Audience Q&A and discussion \n19:00–19:10Closing reflections and introduction to the exhibition opening on 3 November \n19:10–20:00Networking drinks and exhibition viewing \nFrom visual evidence to environmental justice\nPart of The Hague Climate Week\nThis event is part of The Hague Climate Week 2026 and also forms the opening conversation of a two-day programme exploring environmental destruction through law\, photography and visual advocacy. \nOn 3 November\, the work of Emerging Lens Fellows Oyewole Lawal and Edwin Ndeke will be presented in a public exhibition and participatory programme at The Grey Space in the Middle\, looking more closely at waste\, consumption\, labour\, environmental degradation and the communities dealing with their consequences. \nTogether\, the two events ask how images\, lived experience\, advocacy and law can reinforce one another in making environmental harm visible—and turning recognition into accountability and action. \nAbout the organisers \nThe Hague Humanity Hub is a not for profit foundation based in The Hague\, the international city of peace and justice and home to hundreds of organisations working towards a better word. We offer an open and inclusive platform for changemakers to connect both locally and internationally\, building bridges across themes\, sectors\, and disciplines. \nArt Works Projects (AWP) is a Chicago- and The Hague-based nonprofit that uses visual storytelling\, new media and public engagement to confront human rights abuses and social injustice. Working with artists and partners around the world\, AWP creates exhibitions\, films and public programmes that connect powerful stories with dialogue\, advocacy and action. \nThe Promise Institute for Human Rights at UCLA School of Law is a centre for human rights education\, research and advocacy\, with locations in Los Angeles and Europe. The Promise Institute Europe advances research and practice in international law and human rights\, with a particular focus on their intersection with environmental and planetary justice. \nPrivacy\nBy attending this event\, you acknowledge that photographs and/or video may be taken for documentation and promotional purposes by The Hague Humanity Hub. DESCRIPTION:What happens to the things we consume once we no longer want them — and who deals with what we leave behind? \nAt the centre of this exhibition are the works of Nigerian photojournalist and sociologist Oyewole Lawal and Kenyan documentary photographer Edwin Ndeke. Bringing together projects from Lagos and Nairobi\, their collaborative storytelling shines a light on waste pickers: an often-overlooked workforce that plays an essential role in collecting\, recovering\, and recycling materials from growing urban waste streams. \nTheir photography provides the starting point for a wider conversation about our relationship with waste. Moving from the experiences captured in their images\, the programme explores the systems that produce waste and the environmental and social consequences that follow\, with a particular focus on textiles and fashion. \nTogether with researchers\, recycling practitioners and artists\, we will look at both the challenges — from textile waste and chemicals to patterns of production and consumption — and the alternatives. Through conversation\, demonstrations\, and hands-on activities\, visitors can explore recycling and circular approaches\, natural dyes\, sustainable creative practices\, and different ways of thinking about the materials we produce\, use\, and discard. \nThe evening invites us to look beyond waste itself and consider the people\, choices and systems behind it — and what we might do differently. \nBuilding on the legal and accountability conversation of 2 November\, this event shifts attention towards the people\, places and lived experiences behind environmental harm. Photography becomes an entry point for discussing climate justice in a way that is accessible beyond professional climate and legal communities. \nThe programme has three layers: \nArtist conversation: Behind the images\n– Oyewole and Edwin: Introduction to the photographers\, their work and the communities and environmental challenges documented.\nModerated conversation: From Waste to Systems\n– Connecting visual storytelling with climate justice\, environmental accountability and ethical representation.\nParticipatory element\n– Hands-on activities allow visitors to respond to the work\, contribute their perspectives or explore how visual storytelling can be used for climate engagement and advocacy. \nProgramme: \n16:00 – 16:30 Doors open\, registration and welcome \n16:30 – 17:00 Opening and introduction to artists \n17:00 – 17:30 Conversation/panel \n17:30 – 18:15 Participatory element \n18:15 – 19:00 Networking with drinks and exhibition viewing \nAbout the organisers \nThe Hague Humanity Hub is a not for profit foundation based in The Hague\, the international city of peace and justice and home to hundreds of organisations working towards a better word. We offer an open and inclusive platform for changemakers to connect both locally and internationally\, building bridges across themes\, sectors\, and disciplines. \n	Register This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Community Drinks: Imagining Climate Resilience
DESCRIPTION:What if your next game-changing connection is just a drink away? \nJoin us for a special edition of The Community Drinks in partnership with The Climate Justice Community during The Hague Climate Week to wind down around a glass\, make new connections\, and get inspired by the panel conversation of the evening. For this edition we are leaving our usual home at The Hague Humanity Hub for a new location at EnergieKas\, a rooftop greenhouse that is the perfect setting to get away from your busy schedule and enjoy after-hours with purposeful conversations. \nWhat can you expect? \nJoin the Community Drinks on “Imagining Climate Resilience” from 17:00 to 19:00 for an evening of conversation\, reflection\, and connection around a word that is everywhere in climate work yet rarely means the same thing twice: resilience. \nResilience is used by almost everyone\, but its meaning shifts depending on who is speaking. Does it mean bouncing back to how things were\, or transforming the systems that made people vulnerable in the first place? And crucially: resilience of what\, to what\, and for whom? The way we answer shapes whose needs get prioritised\, who carries the burden of adapting\, and who is held responsible. \nWe will explore questions such as: \nWhat do we actually mean when we talk about climate resilience\, and whose definition counts?\nIs resilience about recovering from shocks\, or about changing the conditions that create vulnerability in the first place?\nAnd finally\, how can organisations make sure local knowledge and lived experience genuinely shape what resilience looks like in practice?\nThrough a panel of spotlight speakers from different corners of the ecosystem and an open discussion\, the evening will create space to exchange experiences\, challenge assumptions\, and think critically about a concept we too often take for granted. \nWho are the speakers? \nThe speakers for this edition will be announced shortly before the event. We are bringing together two complementary perspectives from across the peace and justice ecosystem\, exploring the relationship between voice\, power\, storytelling\, representation\, and visibility. \nWho is it for? \nIf you are interested in connecting with people and their work towards a more peaceful\, just and sustainable world\, this event is for you. Whatever your role or sector\, join Community Drinks to relax\, exchange perspectives\, and connect with this vibrant community committed to making the world more peaceful\, just and sustainable\, one conversation at a time. \nDate: Thursday\, the 5th of November\nTime: 17:00–19:00\nLocation: EnergieKas\, Helena van Doeverenplantsoen 3\, 2512 ZB Den Haag \nCome meet fellow professionals\, exchange perspectives\, and explore how technology and humanity can evolve together. \nWe look forward to welcoming you. \nPrivacy Policy \nThe Humanity Hub collects your name\, email\, and organization (if you have one) when you sign up for events\, so they can manage the event and tell you about future ones. SUMMARY:Fiscal Decentralisation and Local Finance Course
DESCRIPTION:Key information \n\nCourse Date: (Face-to-face)26 October – 6 November 2026\nLocation:The Hague\, Netherlands\nFee:€3\,995\n\nIntroduction\nHow a country organises its finances shapes how local authorities govern their cities\, towns\, and villages. Fiscal decentralisation gives local governments greater authority to decide how and where to allocate resources\, enabling them to better respond to citizens’ needs. \nFor decentralisation to succeed\, national governments must establish clear fiscal arrangements to support local service delivery\, while local authorities must strengthen their financial capacities and optimise resource use. \nThis course explores key aspects of fiscal decentralisation\, including expenditure responsibilities\, intergovernmental transfers\, and local revenue sources. Embedded in the broader context of decentralisation\, the training also highlights the importance of political decentralisation. \nThe programme combines theoretical insights with global best practices\, facilitating group discussions and learning from study visits to the Ministry of Interior\, Provincial Government\, and The Hague municipality. Tailored to participants’ needs\, sessions cover topics such as corruption\, participatory budgeting\, local taxation\, and financial accountability principles. \nKey Information\nThis course is designed for professionals working on (fiscal) decentralisation processes\, public sector reform programmes\, public service delivery or public financial management. Participants come from national\, regional and local governments as well as from donor and development organisations. \nParticularly relevant for professionals working in ministries of finance\, municipal budgeting and revenue units\, audit offices\, public financial management departments\, development banks\, and fiscal policy advisory bodies. \n	Apply now

SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night - Climate Justice Week: The Here Now Project
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special edition of Just Peace Movie Night\, taking place as part of The Hague Climate Week\, from 2–8 November 2026. As part of this city-wide programme around climate and sustainability\, we invite you to an evening of film\, reflection and conversation on climate change\, climate justice and meaningful local action. \nExperience climate change through the eyes and cameras of the people living through it. The Here Now Project brings together extraordinary first-hand footage of climate extremes from communities around the world. Without narration or traditional interviews\, the film puts lived experience at the centre and confronts audiences with the immediate and interconnected reality of climate change. \nAbout the film – The Here Now Project \nThe Here Now Project tells the story of a year of climate extremes through footage captured by ordinary people experiencing these events themselves. Rather than relying on journalists\, experts or filmmakers to interpret what is happening\, the film places the cameras in the hands of the people living through these events. \nWithout traditional narration or interviews\, the film creates an immediate and personal perspective on climate change\, bringing together experiences from communities around the world. The footage reveals how climate extremes affect people’s everyday lives\, while highlighting the interconnected nature of a global crisis. \nFollowing the screening\, a moderated conversation will explore how we document and tell stories about climate impacts\, whose perspectives are centred\, and the ethical responsibilities involved in using personal footage of people experiencing disaster and loss. \nThe conversation will then turn towards action: how can the urgency and emotions generated by stories like these become meaningful engagement rather than helplessness? Local changemakers and initiatives from The Hague will share concrete examples of what climate action can look like at community level\, connecting the global experiences shown in the film to people and initiatives taking action here. \nConversation themes \nLived experience and storytelling – What changes when climate events are documented by the people experiencing them rather than interpreted by journalists\, experts or filmmakers?\nEthics of documentation – Who owns these images and stories? How should highly personal footage be contextualised\, and what responsibilities arise when people are injured\, displaced or die? How can we avoid turning suffering into spectacle?\nFrom urgency to agency – Stories of climate impacts can leave us feeling overwhelmed\, but they can also inspire action. What meaningful action is possible locally\, and what examples from The Hague show that communities can make a difference? \n  \nProgramme \n18:00 – 18:30 – Doors open / arrival \n18:30 – 18:40 – Welcome and introduction \n18:40 – 20:00 – Screening: The Here Now Project \n20:00 – 20:30 – Post-screening conversation: lived experience\, storytelling and climate justice \n20:30 – 20:45 – Audience Q&A\, closing reflections and possible call to action \n20:45 – 21:30 – Networking drinks \nLocation: De Energiekas – Helena van Doeverenplantsoen 3\nDate & Time: 06 November 2026 | 18:00 – 21:30 \n  \nAbout Just Peace Movie Nights \nJust Peace Movie Nights is an event series organised by The Hague Humanity Hub in collaboration with partner organisations from The Hague’s peace and justice ecosystem. SUMMARY:Who Pays the Price? Regional perspectives
DESCRIPTION:This event is part 2 of a 3-part Studium Generale program series organised between Leiden University and the Humanity Hub. On three Wednesday evenings we bring together academics and practitioners\, and delve into the world of critical raw materials. \nWhat are the global effects of the extraction of critical raw materials on regions world wide? \nIn this second session in the series on critical raw materials\, we look at how the run on critical raw materials affects regional and local communities. Together with Jeleel Balyaminu\, MSc and Dr. Soledad Valdivia Rivera we draw parallels between Latin-America and Africa. We explore what the global demand for critical raw materials means for communities and how it creates new geopolitical power structures. What is the role China plays? And how do we look at possible human right violations involved. \nJeleel Balyaminu is currently doing a PhD at the African Studies Centre Leiden. His research is on Natural Resource Governance and Socio-Cultural Conditions in Africa: From Policy to Practice. \nSoledad Valivia Rivera is Assistant Professor at the Institute for History at the Department of Latin America Studies. She focusses among others on the state and social movement relations in Bolivia. \nAfterwards there is time for drinks and a networking reception. \nMore speakers will be announced soon. \n🗓 Wednesday 11 November\n🕠17:30 – 19:00\n📍The Humanity Hub\, Fluwelen Burgwal 58\, Den Haag \nAttendence is free\, but please sign-up in advance. \n	Register This link opens in a new tab
